Dilemma with my car insurance Insurance

Dilemma with my car insurance Insurance

    Dilemma with my car insurance

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:12 PM PST

Early December I financed a vehicle and not to long I had switched car insurance since the one I previously had was expensive. Now when I switched to my current insurance, the agent insisted that I add my mother as a driver that it will lower the price of the insurance significantly. So I went ahead and added my mother as a driver for my vehicle but little did I know the agent had made my mother as the main account holder.

I found out when I tried creating account online to set up my payment information. I did call the company itself asking to the verify information whether it was true. As a result, I went ahead and talked to the agent that created my policy while explaining that the way the policy was created was not the what I wanted. He ends up telling me that he did it so he can lower my monthly insurance cost and did not my mother's signature or approval as I am the one paying for it (I did tell my mother about this as not happy about it). When I asked the agent to create another policy or change the policy he mentioned I had to wait 31 days to create another another policy as the current one is following my car already.

Given the backstory, I personally did not like the way the agent approach this. So my question is:

Would I suffer any legal repercussions as the main account is not under my name when the car is under my name?

If you need more information for clarity please let me know. I didn't name the company in question as I did not want to break any of subreddit rules.

Edit: Forgot to mention that this in Texas.

Daughter loaned our car to 18 year old friend who got into accident. How should I approach insurance claims/compensation?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:27 AM PST

My daughter decided to loan the vehicle (2012 Honda CRV which she drives exclusively) to her licensed and insured 18 yo male friend, who promptly backed it into a parked car. The friend and the other party exchanged insurance information. My first intuition is to approach my daughter's friend and see if he will compensate me out of pocket for repairs, rather than go through insurance companies, as his premiums will undoubtedly skyrocket. Is there any reason I should start a claim with my insurance company? Any other advice is appreciated.

    Edit: vehicle make and model

[Pic] Can somebody check if this total loss estimate is OK? And Storage fees...

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:24 PM PST

Basically uncle got rear-ended, 0 liability on his part. Adjustor says it's gonna be a total loss since repair ($6200 plus more) would be more than car's ACV ($6,900) because the salvage fee is 2k? Can they contest this? Uncle aunt both scared of the constant reminder from the body shop that there could be more internal damage and future repair costs that car may not be safe to be driven anymore, so they just want to get a reasonable amount to buy the same car including dmv fees, taxes, so minimum 10k.

Plus the adjustor finally called on a Friday to tell them that it's gonna be a loss, so they couldn't take the car out of the shop weekends, my uncle's family's already out of town. Can they get the storage fees reimbursed? He said they waited for 2 weeks accdg to the body shop just to get a reply from AllState.

Can you be liable for damages beyond the coverage if you are neither the driver nor the owner of the car?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 08:51 PM PST

My friend provides insurance for all the vehicles in his household. This includes a car owned by a young woman living in the house. She loaned her car to someone else who got in an accident. If the damages from the accident exceed the insurance coverage could my friend potentially be liable? State is PA.

    Double Vision Insurance?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 08:27 PM PST

So I have my own Vision Insurance/Benefits through my workplace with VSP and I'm also covered under my father's Davis Vision plan as a dependent.

Can I take advantage of both plans? Like use one to get sunglasses and one to get glasses (aka two glasses a year?)

    Pedestrian Incident Advice

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:30 PM PST

I live in Ohio. Earlier this month, I was on a trip to PA driving in the evening when I got into an accident with a pedestrian jaywalking. It was an older lady waiting in the middle of the yellow divider on a 2 way road. She tried to dart past my car but was not fast enough. The front side of my car, near the side mirror, clipped her. I was below the speed limit, 35. I waited with her along with some pedestrians while the police and an ambulance came. The pedestrian did not want us to call anyone because her, "husband would be mad". To the best of my knowledge she only hurt her ankle, I believe it was a twist. The police took statements from the bystanders who all said that the older lady was in the middle of the road and tried to dart past my car, and that I was not speeding.

At the time of the incident, I was not able to provide proof of insurance coverage. My car was financed through CNAC and I incorrectly believed that I had insurance coverage under them as well. I have since purchased a Geico policy. There was no damage to my car.

I was recently contacted by the pedestrian's insurance company and I am unsure how to proceed. Am I financially liable for the pedestrian's hospital visit or any injuries? What steps should I take next?

    HSA and claim reprocessing refunds....

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 07:19 PM PST

So it seems like my health insurance screwed up and charged too much towards our family deductible. They appear to have "resolved it" by picking my wife's oldest claim (from March) and reprocessing it so that I think we are due around a $150 refund... calling them tomorrow to try and get a definitive answer on that.

Anyways that claim was billed by the provider to us and paid, and then reclaimed through our HSA back in March/April. So how does that refund affect this? With only 2 days left in the year I'm not going to have any other any other expenses to offset it against.... does it even matter if I've not actually received the refund yet? Is it a case of just offsetting the refund on my expenses next year? Or does it create a problem for my 2019 tax return?

    Question about high rate insurance

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 07:24 AM PST

I'm 30, no accidents no tickets (in the past 8 years), but I'm still paying $200/month for full coverage on a Focus ST. Which is the cheapest through Geico (I had USAA but they wanted to charge me $400/month). When I quote for a Honda Accord it goes up still.

But I hear people who are younger than me paying much much less even in the same city (I know zipcode has to do with it, but still $100 more/month). I've reached out to agents and no one seems to want to come close to this price.

Edit: I use nearly the same policy standards ($250/ded or $300/ded depending on what the service offers) along with the same coverage for accident forgiveness, rental car, and other stuff as well.

Recently found out I'm not on my own car's Insurance policy

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:54 PM PST

Several years ago, a family friend became an insurance agent. My parents and I decided to help him out and made him our agent. We switched our car policies together and he did get us a better deal. Not long after that, I purchased a new car. He told me I would need to put one of my parent's on my car's title to continue using the same policy. Fast forward a couple of years and I guess he moved on to another job. Our policies got transfered to some other agent. No biggie.

Fast forward a couple more years and I'm now looking to buy a new car, so I contacted the new agent to get a quote. The quote seemed pretty high, considering what I currently pay and I had not had any accidents nor traffic violations. He said it was because I did not have recent insurance history. Apparently, while my vehicle is insured, and they do see me as the owner, they have not had me registered as a driver. Basically all this time, it's been under my parent's policy which I was not included on. From their perspective, I have not been an insured driver for several years. Yes, I'm an idiot for not scrutinizing the paperwork. Part of it was that my father and I share the same name, so the insurance card looks correct.

Anything I can do to rectify this or do I have to bite the bullet and basically start over and pay higher rates?

Throwaway cuz this is kind of embarrassing.

Corroded pipe, does this fall under renters insurance policy or landlords?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 04:49 PM PST

I live in an apartment on the 2nd and 3rd floor of a dwelling. There is a business located on the first floor. Recently the business incurred some water damage due to a corroded pipe coming from out living room radiator. In my apartment there is no signs of water damage or any hints that this was an issue, it is only visible when looking at the wall and ceiling inside the 1st floor business.

The business owner called me today and stated he was in contact with my landlord, who may just pay for the repairs out of pocket instead of filing a claim. The business owner also asked me for a copy of my renters insurance , is this standard practice? I also spoke to his insurance agent who stated because the origin is not from within the business, the business's insurance will not cover. Should I be sharing my renters insurance info with the business owner? I don't know alot about insurance but I would think either the business or landlord would have their insurance cover this, not the policy of the renters.

Need help on choosing the right insurance/benefits for work

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:37 PM PST

Hi All. I just recently got a full-time job (my very first one). They offer health, dental, and eye benefits for employees. I'm wondering if you have any advice or helpful tutorial links that can help me determine which plan I should choose.

I'm looking at the descriptions for each plan. I have no clue and I need help. What do they mean like here are some examples:

    • Deductible: 5,000/10,000
    • Calendar Year Out-of-Pocket Max Individual/Family: Ded then 20%
    • Prescription Copays: Ded then 20%/Ded then 20%/Ded then 20%/Not applicable
    • Hospitalization Inpatient/Outpatient : Ded then 20%
    • Special Visit : Ded then 20%
    • Primary Care Visit for Injury or Illness : Ded then 20%

Like what does "Ded then 20%" mean? I just want to fully know how applying for insurance works. Like what is good and what isn't? I'm all new to this so some vocabulary words are such a blur to me. I think I need health insurance 101 for dummies book. Thank you all so much.

    Progressive Claims Adjuster Trainee interview

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 10:09 AM PST

Hello all! I have an upcoming in person interview for a Claims Adjuster Trainee position with Progressive. I've successfully passed the assessment and the video interview. I've read pretty much everything I can find on the internet about the position, the company, and tips for the interview, but I thought I'd reach out here for any additional advice someone might be able to offer! I've been practicing STAR questions/responses. What is Progressive looking for in a claims trainee? I don't have experience in insurance, but I have about ten years of diverse job roles like corrections, social services case management, and autism services. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

    Backed into wife’s car

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:33 PM PST

Yes I'm an idiot. No my wife's not making me sleep on the couch. I did have some questions as to how this situation goes down though..

I backed into my wife's car (our vehicles are on the same policy) and there is damage beyond my skill of repair. I have liability, comp, and collision on both vehicles and I am in Louisiana if that makes a difference. Collision and comp have a deductible of $500. I've scoured these documents and the only thing I see that comes close to helping me understand is:

"We will pay for direct and accidental loss to your insured auto or a non- owned auto (including insured loss to an attached trailer) from a collision with another object or by upset of that auto or trailer. The deductible amount won't be subtracted from the loss payment in collisions involving your insured auto and another auto insured by us."

So I understand the deductible amount won't be subtracted from the payout. But, in this scenario, I'll only have to meet one deductible to repair the damage to my vehicle and hers right?

EDIT: Got in touch with someone at my claims department and here's what he said. He said that collision covers my vehicle only. And because you can't be held liable against yourself, your liability policy can't be used. So typically 2 claims would be filed, with 2 deductibles. But because of the state I'm in, the deductibles are automatically waived. What I've decided to do in order to not have an "at fault" on my driving record is not pursue the claim to my vehicle (broken twilight and a surface scratch I can easily buff) but pursue a claim on my wife's vehicle under my collision policy. One deductible, wife's car gets fixed, I fix my own truck, and no at fault ding. Sounds like a winner to me.

What amount justifies a comprehensive claim?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:33 PM PST

This afternoon, while parking the car in the garage, I got too close to a shelf and put a big, wide scratch behind the wheel well of my brand new car. 😩 I don't have an estimate yet, but I'm assuming this is a relatively simple fix at a body shop and way more than I could touch up at home.

We have comprehensive coverage with a $50 deductible. (I'm assuming that's the coverage this would fall under.) However, we receive a total of $132/six months as a "premier driver discount," which I assume reflects a lack of claims. I'm therefore assuming that a claim would be factored in as higher rates eventually. At what amount of repair bill is it worth making an insurance claim?

    (Ohio, for state-specific stuff.)

Had an accident while being insured by 2 different car insurance companies. Help please.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 12:00 PM PST

So I was in an accident last week and I believe my truck is a total loss. Earlier this month I had gotten new car insurance to bring down the costs. Anyways at the time of the accident I was technically insured by 2 different policies from 2 separate companies. Bristol west and farmers. Under my previous company (Bristol west) I had full coverage however the new company (farmers) made a mistake and put me under liability only. I, being an idiot that I am, did not double check the insurance coverage and took their word that they put all the coverages as I had asked. So I started a claim with farmers and was just going to accept the loss. However after going through some papers I noticed that Bristol west had me covered until the 26th of this month. My accident was on the 21st. Was wondering if it's legal to start another claim with the my previous car insurance since I had full coverage under them. If anyone could help me out it would be really appreciated.

Rearended by a Lyft Hertz rental.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 11:13 AM PST

Their insurance department isn't open on weekends, so I haven't talked to them yet.

Anyone have experience getting repairs done with them? I need a new bumper, at least. It was a hard hit and I'm concerned about hidden damage.

Anything to watch out for? Am I in for a horrible, drawn out runaround? Am I going to have to get my insurance to beat up their insurance?

    Cheapest Insurance Company

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 02:25 PM PST

I'm looking to get a brand new car on Monday and I've been lucky to be on a policy with my in-laws for a long time with my husband's car. I'm shopping around for my own policy for the first time and I'm waiting on a local insurance agency to get back to me Monday morning with their options but in the meantime I'm calling around to the national insurance companies with weekend call centers to get quotes. I've tried Geico, farmers and liberty mutual so far with mixed results.

I'm just looking to see which major company is usually the cheapest to make sure I'm considering all my options. I figured I would get a more reliable opinion here than if I just blindly Googled it.

Vehicle Registration/Insurance Issue - Please Help!

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 07:49 AM PST

    Heres the situation:

I moved 4 months ago from IL to CO. Before leaving IL, I passed my old vehicle along to my brother who is fixing it up for his own use. In the mean-time, I opened up a "named operator, non-owned vehicle" policy through Progressive to save some of the discounts I had for being a good driver, having a policy for a few years, etc.. This policy is still in IL.

Flash forward to last week where I went home for Christmas to IL and bought a vehicle there at a dealership. The dealership charged me IL sales tax because my drivers license is still from IL, which is apparently what they base this off of. Since my license was from IL, they also registered and plated the vehicle to IL. If I hadn't had them plate and register the vehicle in IL, it was my understanding that I would have been charged another round of sales tax in CO when I went to go register and plate the car at a CO DMV. The IL dealership HAD to charge IL sales tax since my license is from IL and not CO.

My question is this: If my drivers license says IL, the car is titled/plated/registered in IL, do I need CO insurance?? I plan on getting it transferred once my plates expire in a year from now.............but, IF I were to get in an accident that was reported (or even pulled over by local police for a traffic violation), would they have any way to see that I'm technically a CO resident?

I appreciate any and all responses!

Intention was good but have the opposite effect

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 03:12 PM PST

Learned today that @TD #autoinsurance has a program that provides discounts for good driving (i.e. gentle acceleration and braking); it requires you to drive for 120 days/year. For casual drivers (like me) that drive only on weekends, we are #disqualified from discounts. But with potential savings of 25%, I have to decide whether to drive another ~14 days to get several hundred $ back. Doesn't this encourage more #emissions which harms the environment? Seems misguided. Why reward just the frequent drivers?

ACA supplement and tax - Friend did not make the $13k MAGI

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 06:54 AM PST

Friend did not reach $13k AGI this year and is on ACA. What to expect or can it be adjusted

Friend is a part time instructor at a local art institute and this year her income <$13k. She is on ACA and has supplements so she can afford health care.

What can she expect to pay extra for the supplements ? Is there anything else she can do to not get a large tax burden for 2019 ???

Approved for VA Medicaid, next steps?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 05:42 AM PST

At the beginning of the month I was approved for Medicaid in Virginia. I see that the next steps are to wait to be contacted by a health insurance agency and then I guess the next step would be to choose a plan then pay the premium. (Silver, gold, etc.)

How long should I expect to wait? I'm curious because I know my coverage said it starts January 1st.

And normally I am very patient, but I just so happened to get a really bad cough and would like to go to a doctor in case it's an infection or pneumonia, but I'd like to get my insurance figured out first. I'm already paying off a bill from when I went to the hospital half a year ago and would like to prevent another huge bill.
