Claim filed against me stating I was driver in a hit & run rear end accident.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 11:46 AM PST

A vehicle rear ended someone in a hit & run. License plate left an imprint. Police tracked down the owner but was an uninsured driver. Claims he lent the vehicle to a "friend" which was deduced to me some how via DMV records?

My insurance agent contacted me about the opened claim which confused both of us.

    • Time of the hit & run I was out of the country half the world away on vacation.
    • The location of the hit & run was in a state I have not lived in or been back to in 5-6 years.
    • None of the names involved in the case I remotely recognize.
    • The "friend's" name provided as the driver to the officer was not my exact name. Just spelled closely.

Insurance agent advised me to contact the police station in that district about the case number. Called but the officer was out on "training" for a week and can't respond to the issue. Besides waiting for their response what else should I do? Claims can be made with such vague information?

How should I dispute the insurance conclusion?

    Posted: 04 Dec 2019 12:27 AM PST

I was involved in an accident in a parking lot.

I was backing out of my spot, and my car (sedan) was all the way out of the spot already, when a truck parking behind me backed out to me. My rear bumper was torn on one side from the hit. The way I see it, this is 100% their fault, as I was already out, and the truck did not see me.

I filed a claim at my insurance but haven't sent any photos. They didn't help much and told me to go with the other insurance first. Cool.

I filed a claim and sent photos to the other insurance, and they concluded that the other driver and I were both at fault. So they'll pay 50%, and my insurance or I will pay 50%. I don't want my premium to increase, and deductible should be around what I have to pay (~$500), so I plan to pay it out of pocket and not tell my insurance company. However, I want to dispute this first.

My questions are: - When I refresh my policy, will my insurance company know anyway? I think they usually ask about accidents and whether I am at fault. - How do I dispute this with the other insurance company? I could either talk to the adjuster directly, hire a lawyer to do it, or ask my insurance company to talk to them. I'm leaning towards talking to the adjuster directly.

    Thanks!

Should I buy Non-owner auto insurance to avoid reinstatement premiums later, since I am going car-free?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 05:41 PM PST

I'm living in an urban area and will be selling the car. My current insurer (Amica) let me know that if I were to buy and insure a car in the future, I'd face reinstatement price hikes if I let coverage lapse. I live in Washington state, USA. I have a strong credit rating, and no accidents with me as a driver. I got a quote from Geico for around $30 / month for non owner insurance. That sounds so nominal, and I'm considering taking it.

How much more would I pay for auto insurance in the future if I decided instead to let my coverage lapse?

What do you think I should know, in choosing a non-owner auto insurance carrier, if I only occasionally will drive a rental car or friend's car? Thank you!

Health Insurance question needing expert advice

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 11:56 PM PST

I am in my early 20's and self-employed. I'm trying to pick a new plan for2020 but with my income increasing a good amount the cheapest plan is 170$ and doesn't cover jack s*** crazy high deductable, nothing really covered until its met. the plans range from $170-$350 and the more expensive ones are barley marginally better. I'm very active in weight training and jiu-jitsu my job isn't dangerous but I do drive quite a bit. I don't go to the doctor unless I feel its an absolute must. I feel the price I would pay monthly for extremely minimal coverage may not be worth the extra cost these plans basically only cover extreme scenarios... What should I do??

Is Insurance testing to screw me over??

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 09:46 PM PST

About a month ago, I was in an accident and I was not at fault. So going through the at fault persons insurance, they totalled out my car(a total loss, sadly) and will have to pay my medical bills. I asked the insurance company if they will pay all of them, as I had to go to the hospital twice, once straight from the scene of the accident, and again a few days later for brain splitting headaches and even worse soreness, where I wasnt sore at to begin with.. They were vague, saying they would pay up to the policy limit. I asked what it is, they say they cant give out that info. That's okay, all I need to know is if they're all going to be paid for, so virbatum I go "Okay, to your knowledge, looking at how much my bills total out(about $11,000) and whatever the limit is, will my bills be paid for by you all completely, yes or no?" They again tell me they will only pay up to the limit. It makes me feel reluctant to settle if they're going to leave me with medical bills for something that was out of my control. What do I do? I've been without a car for a week and had to miss work to recover from injuries. After they paid me for my car, the rental had to be taken back. While I definitely need to settle and get paid so I can get another car, I'm afraid they're trying to screw me. Also, how do I get more money? They didnt offer very much for the inconvenience. This has been a real pain.

    Aflac advice needed

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 05:07 PM PST

Thanks for anyone helping out ahead of time.

I currently have a short term disability plan ($33.80/month) and a cancer plan ($44.59/month) through Aflac. My budget can support these, but then again I am not crazy about giving up almost $80 per month for something I never use.

    • Is this too much for these plans? It seems high
    • Would I be crazy to cancel one or both of these? I'm not sure it will ever work out in my favor

If you need more info let me know, but I didn't want to make this a wall of text.

    Diminished value claim

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 08:36 PM PST

I got in an accident that was not my fault. I hired an independent appraiser and they came up with my dv claim being 10k. This was a very high ball number imo to give me room to negotiate. The other insurance came back with 800$ from their department that handles that. I told them I traded my vehicle in and the dealer ship gave me 4500 less that what my vehicle was worth because it showed up on the car report and it was structural damage (bent axel). I told adjuster and they said they go by nada and that says I got what the dealership paid for it. I looked it up and they went by rough trade in which was caused by their insured causing structural damage to my vehicle. I told them and they said tough this is what we're paying you. What recourse do I have now if any? Insurance company used the 17C formula.

Need help choosing health insurance plan

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 07:48 PM PST

As the title says I'm needing some help picking out the best insurance plan that my work offers. I don't know much about insurance and would hate to choose the wrong one.

A few key points that need taken into consideration: -my husband and I have been talking about trying to have a baby this year. We may start trying in January. -I currently am not on any medications, so no reoccurring monthly prescriptions of any kind. -I think I went to the doctor maybe once or twice this last year (not that this really matters) but for the most part, I'm fairly healthy, and don't make frequent trips to the hospital/urgent care.

I attached the description of all 6 plans below.

Thank you all for your help!

How do "family deductibles "and "family out of pocket" work?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 01:34 PM PST

I have a High Deductible Health Plan. My policy lists an individual deductible as $2800, and in the notes says "the family deductible is 2x the individual deductible"

Then it lists the "Out of pocket maximum" also as $2800" and again notes "the family OOP maximum is 2x the individual OOP maximum" which would be $2800.

When the deductible is met, our plan pays 100% of the bills. Same with OOP max (right?)

So my wife had a C-section this year in february, and since then she hasn't paid anything. I assume because she's paid her deductible. She's had multiple follow ups, tests, office visits, etc... EoB's are all "you owe $0.00"

But I am still paying for my stuff... A typical office visit, I get a bill for $135, lab tests, I get a bill for $60-200 ... looking online it shows I'm still over $1000 from my "individual" deductible, and $180 from the "family" deductible...???

If our family OOP is the same as her deductible, and when we hit the OOP max, why would I be getting bills?

    Thanks!

16 year old was run over

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 11:07 AM PST

My son was driving my dirt bike ATV on the road (wasn't licensed); and a woman ran a stop sign and ran him over. Broke his leg and racked up about $160k in medical bills so far. My attorney tells me today the woman only had 100k insurance and was asking about my policy information. My bike had insurance at time and I had umbrella policy so I suspect I'm well covered despite he wasn't supposed to be riding on road. If my insurance is tackled; the woman was already found at fault; will my insurance company mark this as a "not at fault" claim - I guess what I'm getting at; if my insurance company has a payout of any kind; won't this be a black mark on my record if he pursues it?

Before I get beat up about letting my kid drive dirtbike on road; we live next to Capital Forest big ATV riding area; so it's common for quads and dirtbikes on the road; however; by letter of the law it's not legal.

Moving from Missouri to Australia: can insurance companies see my driving record?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 05:00 PM PST

I (23M) am moving to Australia for the foreseeable future. I don't have a good driving record in Missouri (1 DUI and 3 at-fault accidents). I'm confused how the process of getting car insurance, and what they can see on my driving record. Will they be able to see all of this? Or could I claim to be a first time driver, and face the steeper payments (which I'm sure would be less than my current rates)?

Life insurance with pre existing conditions (US)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 04:42 PM PST

I'm sorry if this is not the best forum for this, but I was wondering whether any of you know life insurance companies that insure people with pre existing conditions in the US? I already tried with several companies but have been denied every time. I'm 34 and in good general condition but I have an autoimmune disease called IgA nephropathy, which slowly damages my kidneys.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

18 month old charged $95 because first visit was submitted as oral evaluation and not cleaning (even though she had her teeth cleaned and fluoride applied??)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 07:36 AM PST

Hi guys... I took my 18month old daughter to her first dentist appointment (advised to go before 1 but I dropped the ball a little) and thought i was doing the right thing and that she would be covered. She has health insurance through me but not dental. Her health insurance covers preventive visits (cleaning, xrays, etc.) until 13. The dentist saw her for a few minutes, brushed and looked at her 8 tiny teeth and applied fluoride. Whole visit couldn't have lasted more than 5 minutes. I just got home to a $95 bill because the visit was not considered preventive care because she didn't get a "teeth cleaning" even though a child this small technically can't. The dental office listed the visit as an oral evaluation therefor the insurance company is refusing to pay. Do I have any ground to stand on? This all feels incredibly ridiculous.

Questions Regarding Using Personal Vehicle for Rideshare (NJ)

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 04:10 PM PST

    Hello,

On top of working a full time, I'm considering driving for Uber for side money. I currently have NJM Personal Auto Insurance and have a few questions for you.

    1) Is it better to get a personal policy and a ride share policy, or should I just get a hybrid policy?

    2) Are there policies that would cover me if I wanted to do Door Dash and Amazon Flex as well?

    3) Is there any potential liability you'd like to warn me about?

    Thank you very much

Engagement ring insurance. What is reasonable to pay?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 03:47 PM PST

    Hi there

Newly engaged. fiancé made my dream come true with a very nice ring. Tried to educate myself on insurance but a little more help from the reddits won't hurt.

Ring appraised by jeweler at $36k. We do not own a home yet, probably within the next year but for now we are renters. No rental insurance currently. We have auto insurance on our vehicles.

Is it a reasonable estimate that an annual rate should be <1% the cost of the ring?

Jeweler we purchased from said renters insurance probably wouldn't cover this monetary amount of a ring anyway?

Jewelers Mutual seems to be frequently recommended as they also cover damage along with lost and stolen. Their immediate price quote was $759/yr with no deductible. Seems high?

    Halp.

Expat returning to USA after 5 years - will I be penalized by Auto Insurance companies for time abroad?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 03:45 PM PST

My wife and I have been in Europe for about 5 years. We are returning in the Spring of 2020 and I'm curious how Auto Insurance companies will treat our time abroad.

Does anyone know if this will be seen as a gap in insurance, or if there are certain Insurance companies that treat this situation more favorably than others?

    Thanks for your help!

    Home insurance quotes

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 02:48 PM PST

    Hello all,

I'm buying my first house. I've been shopping around for home insurance.

Many of my first quotes ended up being around $1200 and this was expected, then I called Progressive (who I have my car insurance with). They quoted me $1100 last week, then $980 today, then when I called to buy the agent said the house was "sized" wrong and then she quoted me $901. I ended up getting an extra 50% rider coverage and increasing my water backup coverage, to compensate for the lower rebuild cost, but I don't know how it would have changed that much. Ended up with total yearly cost of $930.

    Some bits of helpful info:

Realtor website says the sqrft is 3164

My appraisal says: "Dwelling": 2354 "bsmt": 1287 (90% finished)

These don't add up the same, but with the appraisal numbers the last agent said the basement was sized wrong, that since it is a 2 story house the basement is half finished. I have no clue, just relaying info.

My coverages for all my quotes were: Rebuild cost + 25% increased $1000 deductable 1% of rebuild cost as the wind and hail damage deductable $300,000 family liability $3,000 per person medical 50% of rebuild as personal property amount 10% of rebuild as other structure coverage Water backup coverage for $5,000 with $500 deductable

When she said it was sized wrong she brought the rebuild down from $392,000 to $337,000

I'm a licenced New York Life Agent and I need to move 4 hours away where I'm trying to buy a house. My question, is it acceptable for a licenced insurance agents to transfer to another office with the same company, within the same state?

Got rear ended, and deemed at fault. Looking for ways to dispute.

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 02:21 PM PST

So what happened was a freightliner pulled out of a parking lot (not right in front of me, but enough to where if I had maintained my current speed I would have hit him) into the road. I move from the right lane to the left lane. Once I pass him I get back over into the right lane where he rear ends me. (Side note: The light was red so when I changed lanes I had enough room to comfortably get over witht he red light and he hit me about 3-5 seconds later). I thought I had enough room, but the other driver claims I cut him off hard. My insurance company is claiming because I was changing lanes I'm at fault even though I was fully in the lane prior to being hit.

    My Car: https://imgur.com/OQUT4KX

    His Car: https://imgur.com/F6XtTOF

The reason they gave me for being at fault is in the pictures it shows a dent on my KIA Soul coming from the ladder in front of his vehicle. They told me that if I wasn't at fault there would be two dents from his ladder indicting that I was fully in my lane... even though I was.

Other notes about this incident that bother me, but not sure if help my case: They took 3 months of not responding to me, before I call the complaints line and tell them my insurance adjuster is non responsive. This whole time I had no idea if I was at fault or not, but had a quote ready like a week after the incident. This trucker that hit me refused to give me his insurance info so a cop came to force him, but there was no police report. The officer was strictly there to exchange information. My agent my slipped in telling me, but they said that non of his three insurance policies were popping up on they're end, but they were able to speak to him.

Sounds to me they forgot about me or I slipped through the cracks somehow, called looking for answers, they couldn't figure out heads from tails, and deemed me at fault for convenience. I don't know in what world I'm rear ended by a freightliner and it's my fault. Any help on where to start disputing this and any insight is greatly appreciated. My insurance is about to go up $120 more a month because of this "at fault" accident, and I seriously can't afford that right now...

Is everyone else getting a substantially lower health insurance tax credit for 2020? Or none at all?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 02:04 PM PST

On my Marketplace application for 2020, there wasn't a "don't know" option for whether my family would be offered health coverage through my job in 2021. In the past few years, I could select "don't know" because I honestly didn't know at the time of the application. It didn't impact repayment of the tax credit at all. On the 2020 application, I was forced to choose yes or no as to whether they would be offered coverage through my job. I chose "yes" since nothing has been said to the contrary at my job. The result? No tax credit, due to being offered insurance through my job.

Not getting a tax credit makes no sense, since IRS Pub. 974 says marketplace coverage does not prevent an individual from qualifying for the tax credit.

So I revised the application to indicate that they would not be offered employer coverage next year (again, I don't know for sure whether they will or not), and the tax credit came to about $600. Last year's was about $1,000. I'm shocked because our expected income in 2020 is only $2,000 higher. This will make my family's monthly premiums go up hundreds of dollars, or force them into a cheaper plan where none of their current doctors are showing up as in-network.

Is everyone else getting substantially lower tax credits this year?

At fault auto accident and underinsured

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 12:27 PM PST

Back in May of this year I was involved in an auto accident that resulted in my car being totaled as well the other car that was involved. I was 100% at fault. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt and the other party settled a small bodily claim. However, the settlement for the car damage is still pending because I was underinsured. The other driver subsequently went through his insurance to get the car paid out and now I'm dealing with his insurance through subrogation. At the time of the accident I had property damage set to 10k. The total loss payment to the other party was 18k and today I received my first phone call to collect the difference. I called my insurance company and they stated the other driver's insurance company has not settled with them yet. Furthermore, they have up until 3 years to accept the 10k.

What is the best way to move forward? I don't have 8k to pay out so what will happen to me?

What is the best way to find hidden benefits from insurance companies?

    Posted: 03 Dec 2019 12:03 PM PST

For example, I am pregnant and was planning to purchase a breast pump. A friend said some insurance companies cover this expense and to check with my provider. I checked my benefits documents and there is nothing in writing about breast pump coverage. I then called to double-check and the company does, in fact, cover breast pumps 100% and we have a choice of three different providers to select from. I would have never known had my friend not told me to check. Is there a site somewhere that highlights these types of hidden benefits by provider and coverage topic? Thanks in advance for your tips!
