Update: Frame Damage on an Auto Claim-- Totaled!

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 04:37 PM PDT

    Original Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Insurance/comments/dndv3l/frame_damage_on_an_auto_claim_and_im_in_the_dark/

First and foremost, I wanted to say thank you to all of the detailed and excellent responses I received. I remain out of my depth in the world of auto claims, but I felt like I had a WAY better understanding of the process and potential pitfalls, and had a realistic outlook when dealing with the adjuster.

The shop estimate had some details that didn't add up (literally, didn't subtotal correctly) when I had the chance to look more closely at the itemization. For example, they claimed 20 hours of frame work in one section, and then only two later. I brought this up, and some of my general concerns about the status of the truck after any repairs, to my adjuster. She referred me to the chief regional appraiser, who works closely with the shops in the area to estimate claims.

After discussion with the appraiser, he decided he wanted to take a look at the truck himself. In particular, he was confused that a simple frame-pull would clock 20 hours of labor. Several hours later I got a call that said "yea, so that frame is toast." The estimate went from 55% of total value to over 90% once a new frame was figured into the equation, and the company declared it a total loss. I spoke with the total loss adjuster today, and with new car replacement I'll be essentially held harmless for the entire incident.

As an aside, I can't say enough good things about the team at Liberty Mutual who has handled my claim. When I brought my concerns to their attention, they were spectacular about validating my concerns and honestly investigating the process. I understand that there jobs come down to calculation and risk mitigation, but they added an invaluable human touch to the process.

I also included a picture of my truck without the box--check out the frame in the bottom right corner. Always ask questions!

Do I have a claim or am I SOL. Lent car to friend who lent it to 3rd party.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 05:05 PM PDT

I'm located in California and carry full coverage.

I lent my car to a friend who was going through some tough times.

This friend lent my car to a 3rd party without informing me and against my wishes.

3rd party disappeared with the car which we where eventually able to recover.

Now the car has damage to the front bumper and radiator support.

This arraignment was initially to be much shorter so I never added my friend to my insurance and because I wasn't informed about the 3rd person until we recovered the car I never filed a police report.

Not sure if it matters but I owe about 5k on the car and it is worth about the same according to KBB

Do I have a claim or will my insurance tell me I'm out of luck.

If I do file a claim will insurance sue my friend? He is agreeing to pay for damages now but depending on cost I don't know how long that would take and need the use of my car back sooner than later.

    Thanks for your help

[Iowa] Eye visit isn't considered preventative care due to small hole in eye

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 09:46 AM PDT

This is my wife's issue. She goes in every year for a routine eye exam. However for the last couple years when she's been going in her eye doc has been also checking on a small hole in her left eye. Due to this small hole that takes a second to check and make sure it's not growing her bill is now $282 instead of a $20 copay because the visit is no longer deemed a standard visit.

This doesn't seem right. Is this an issue we need to take up with the doctor, or the insurer?

Is there a payment plan for jaw surgery? Please help :'(

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 06:41 PM PDT

I had braces when I was 15-17. My orthodontist at that time was horrible, but my parents chose him because we live quite far away from other cities. He is the only available orthodontist at that time. He turned my underbite to an open bite, removed two teeth from my upper jaw, and ruined my chewing and speech. Back then, my family planned to have this fixed once I graduate from college and get a well paying job.

As many years go by, I started saving up my money. I am currently 26 and I decided to see the dentist before visiting the orthodontist for consultation. My dentist stated that my teeth enamel is gone, especially the molars. I have several teeth cupping and I will have to crown ALL my teeth. I'm not surprised about that because my father gets cavities so easily and lost majority of his teeth (he has dentures). My dentist told me this could've been genetics.

Now I am desperately wanting to fix this botched jaw and teeth of mine. My dentist estimated the whole procedure will cost me about $80,000! However, he told me I need to get my open bite fixed because it will cause my teeth to deteriorate more in the future.

Are there payment plans for this? This is no longer for cosmetics...I can't eat properly, talk properly, bite, chew....What do I do? :'(

    Insurance after hospitalization

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 09:35 PM PDT

Hey guys, my cousin was recently taken to the emergency room and now has to stay at a mental institution for a few days. Are there anyways he can get financial assistance or insurance that could cover him prior to registering for that insurance provider? She makes under $30000 a year in Illinois.

Out of pocket met, but deductible not met

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 04:51 PM PDT

So recently I had to go to the hospital, and due to this I reached my out of pocket maximum. I had to go get an MRI later, and was told I still had to pay to get the MRI. When I asked why since my out of pocket maximum was met, they said because my deductible was still not met. How is it possible that the deductible has not been met when it is less than the out of pocket?

I'm not sure if it's something obvious I am missing since health insurance is very confusing to me. Thanks

[New York] Does homeowner's policy need to be changed after quit claim?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 04:20 PM PDT

Person X owned a home with a homeowner's policy that named me as an insured on the policy. Person X quit claimed the deed to me. The insurance agent said that since I'm named on the policy, there's no need to re-write it. Is this true? I don't want to take their word for it and then regret it. Thanks!

Out of State Crash on Test Ride vehicle?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 08:01 PM PDT

Hey all, odd situation here. (Keeping this vague for privacy reasons.) I work at a dealership in Illinois. Someone crashed one of our test ride vehicles and insurance has been a nightmare. For reasons unknown we can't run it through our insurance currently. A claim is put through the customers insurance for the crash, but they're rom a "No-Fault" state. According to their insurance, they need our info since their from Michigan and it has "certain guidlines". After googling around, I noticed the only certain guideline is the no-fault state. However the customer was in Illinois when they crashed the test ride vehicle, shouldn't this fall under Illinois jurisdiction? If this is true then I'd be willing to be they don't need our info since we don't fall under any no fault guidelines where both insurances need to be notified.

(I handle insurance claims often for customers and many claim handlers seem pretty incompetent so I was skeptical from the beginning)

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    First time car auto insurance!

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 07:03 AM PDT

I am looking to get off my moms policy , I'm 25. Live in Georgia. Time to grow up a little lol. I see progressive is the cheapest & I do say so myself I am a good driver. Haven't been in an at fault accident yet (knock on wood) no speeding tickets or anything. I do use my phone sometimes during driving but I'm trying to fix it.

Progressive has an app that tracks driving, I'm looking into it! Anyone help me out with how much liability I should put on it? I want my monthly payments to be at least 80-100. Thanks!

new customer lower rate with same insurance company??

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 01:45 PM PDT

My insurance rate for myself and wife has been going up $50 each 6 month renewal without any changes to our driving record. I'm not surprised but I wanted to see if I would get a better rate as a new customer at the same insurance company. I went online and requested a new quote with the exact same coverage, car, drivers, age etc. The new quote was $100 cheaper than my current renewal. Does anyone see a problem with letting my current renewal expire and start a new policy.

Liability Insurance for Electric Skateboard? (And, can I trust what the insurance company tells me over the phone?)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 12:56 PM PDT

(Maryland) Am I covered by by my Homeowner's policy for liability during use of an electric skateboard?

The way I read the policy, it sounds like a motorized vehicles that I own is excluded if it's used off my property and goes faster than 5 mph. Screenshot of policy language.

But, I've called the company (Amica) twice and both times they said I would be covered if someone sued me due to use of an electronic skateboard. I asked for an email or letter stating that. They said they cannot send me anything additional in writing since it's already written in the policy. I say it doesn't appear that way to me. I've tried to get them to explain how it isn't excluded but they just say it's covered or it's just not considered a motor vehicle. (Then, why is there language about 5 mph?)

Does it matter what the phone reps tell me? If they say I am covered, can I trust that?

    Car insurance jumped $150??

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 03:14 PM PDT

    Posting for my gf.

She got into an accident 3 months ago where she wasn't at fault and the officer admitted it was a no fault situation and both parties went off on their own (the other person had no damages, my girlfriend had damaged on the side of her door). Come to find out today her insurance jumped $150 and she's panicking. Her insurance provider never contacted her regarding the incident or to let her know what steps they were taking. Has anyone experienced this? Any tips or advice? Appreciate anything.

Maximum contribution to HSA - Complex situation !

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 02:51 PM PDT

I switched jobs earlier this year and enrolled in an HDHP starting from Mar. 1, 2019. I pumped in a reasonable amount of $$ into my HSA until July 2019, which is when I got married. My spouse had her own PPO insurance from her employer, and she switched to my hdhp after getting married. Until this point, my HSA account showed a maximum eligible contribution of $3500. Following the QLE, my HSA suddenly started showing a maximum eligible contribution of $7000. As a result, I started pumping in more than what I usually would, and I am currently at ~$6000 for the year. Now, I was having a casual chat with my colleagues, and one says I am only eligible for a maximum contribution of $ (7000 * 10) / 12 = $5833 for this year before any tax penalties. Another one says I can pump in a maximum of $7000 without any tax repercussions. Can someone please clarify what is the maximum I can contribute to the HSA before I anger the taxman?

PS: I plan to switch to a PPO plan next year and hence I want to maximize my HSA contribution this year itself.

Edit1: I wanted to clarify that the 10 in 7000 * 10 is for the 10 months I was/am enrolled in the HDHP.

Edit2: Another coworker is saying I can only deposit (10/12)*3500 + (5/12)*3500 = $4375 for the year without the 10% tax penalty! :O

    HSA eligibility (Wa state)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 12:50 PM PDT

I am researching opening an HSA for 2019. I am enrolled in the Kaiser Flex Bronze plan through the health plan exchange.

I am trying to figure out whether this plan is HSA eligible as an HDHP. It seems to meet the deductible and OOP requirements listed in IRS publication 969

Kaiser says that the state insurance commissioner has designated some of their plans as HSA eligible and some as not HSA eligible, that the Flex Bronze plan isn't eligible, and can't explain why.

I spoke to the Wa State Health Plan Finder helpline earlier today and they were unable to help.

The State Health Insurance help chat was unable to help and directed me to submit a question through their 'Ask Mike' online form, which I did.

However, I'm eager to get this sorted out ASAP as I have to handle this before the end of the year if I want to make a 2019 contribution.

Can anyone figure this out for me?

FL auto: should I accept reimbursement?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 12:05 PM PDT

A kid hit my parked car with a bike (best guess) and caused $620 damage. I called Progressive to ask about reimbursement and they opened an accident claim. This I feel was a mistake on my part. Now, no matter what I decide to do, the accident will appear on my CarFax report.

My deductible is $450. I'm not sure whether to accept payment or walk away. I'm worried about how my premiums will be impacted. What should I know before I decide?

California: reasonable pain and suffering settlement from car accident

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 11:37 AM PDT

Hoping a few insurance people might weigh in - I was t-boned in the middle of an intersection 6 months ago. Other driver was found 100% at fault. My car was totaled and I was paid $14,000 by my own insurance company to cover the value of my car (other driver didn't have high enough limits to cover the total loss). I have some soft tissue damage as a result - went to my primary car physician, went to physical therapist (who recommended chiropractic treatment) and have had about 15 chiro appointments over the past 6 months. In total my out of pocket medical expenses have been $1,800, plus needed to use 8 hours of sick leave from work for a few appointments. I'm feeling a lot better now, and will be settling the pain and suffering piece of my claim with the other driver's insurance company soon. They have been offering me $1,000 since the accident started and that amount hasn't changed. I'd like to ask for a little more than that and realize we might meet somewhere in the middle. Would it be reasonable to ask for $5,000 in pain and suffering? If so, should I just outright ask for it, or write a letter detailing the accident, the loss, my pain and the places in my life that were impacted (like my ability to run for a few months)?

Can I get a guarantee from a health insurance provider they will cover a specific medication before purchasing plan?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 11:28 AM PDT

To say this medication changed my wife's life is not even approaching an understatement. She struggled for years to manage her condition and everything being prescribed worked temporarily and then she grew resistant. Finally we found something that worked. It was new and is $9000/dose.

She purchased insurance that specifically stated they covered this medication. They refused to pay for it. They wanted her to try other medications first, all of which she had already tried, years ago, under a different doctor.

She got assistance from the drug company, they would cover it for two years while fighting the insurance company. Two years ran out and her insurance canceled her plan.

She degenerated for months. The last 2 months she couldn't leave the couch.

We finally got more assistance from the drug company. They are providing the medication for free while she is without insurance.

Here's the problem. Currently she is getting that medication. When she gets insurance, she may not be. It effects her quality of life so much that I'm sure she will kill herself if she cannot continue to take it. Seeing the amount of pain she was in these last few months, I wouldn't blame her.

Is it possible to get an insurance company to guarantee covering this medication before we purchase a plan?

Car accident and problems with claim

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 11:19 AM PDT

I was in a car accident Tuesday morning in Anderson, sc. a woman wasn't paying attention to a stop at a yield sign and slammed into a car who slammed into me. The state trooper found her to be at fault.

Her car was totaled from the impact(from the looks of it ) my bumper, trunk lid/seal and my tail light have damage. The adjuster asked for pics through their app and says she only saw certain things. She wants to pay me $641. Also i drive a Honda Civic coupe ex 08.

I asked for an on-site adjuster and they said no. Now it's paid off and as the car is aging and i doubt i have anything more than 3 years with it (after a replaced engine) i wasn't going to fix it . However i don't have options for getting the extra $ since she won't send anyone and her manager hasn't replied.

Should i take the $641 or just get the car fixed (only out of spite honestly) if i get the car fixed then they'll supplement . she's been hard to deal with for medical (doctor took me out of work only two days nothing major) she also insulted my job basically when she asked what do i do and how much i make. Yes i do make that much working in a food place. It's manufacturing and I've went to school for micro.

Any opinions as I'm frustrated and admittedly have low tolerance and patience.

MO-Medical Insurance premiums based on how much you make?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2019 10:11 AM PDT

I have a friend that is telling me that she just got her annual insurance notice and they told her she has to pay more each month for insurance because she makes more. They are apparently basing people's insurance premium based on their income. I've never heard of this. Wanted to see if anyone knows if this is legal?
