    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Nov 08, 2019

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 12:07 AM PST

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Disney pops 4% as streaming hopes trump earnings decline: Market ‘sensing big things are brewing’

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 08:41 AM PST

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/08/disney-up-on-streaming-hopes-market-sensing-big-things-are-brewing.html

Disney reported Thursday an adjusted profit of $1.07 per share. That's down 28% from $1.48 per share in the year-earlier period.

Still, Wall Street analysts glossed over the profit decline as Disney gets set to take on streaming giants such as Netflix at their own game.

So far, analysts like Disney's chances in the streaming wars.

"The market is sensing big things are brewing in the quarters ahead," one analyst says.

    Cloudflare at under $16

Worth it? They are very big in web infrastructure and security. In fact, I'm a bit surprised at how quiet their IPO was.

MCD, you got any shares in it?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 01:46 AM PST

It's a blue chip company and good for long term my opinion. I believe they will follow the trend with vegetarian burgers etc, as more people are becoming health conscious. Personally I believe that we will always go for junk food.

Recently price gone down due to CEO being sacked.

Do you think it's a good time to invest now whilst the price is down? Do you think it's still a good investment? Do you think humans will always go for junk instead of healthy stuff?

Why this is rising non stop? And what happened to this in 2018 (from 32$ to 16$)? Why that dip? And why the surge?

Why has Paypal gone down for the past 6 months?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 09:35 AM PST

It seems like revenue, net income, total assets, and SE have gone up on a quarterly and annual basis. They also beat (or met) every EPS and sales target the past 4 quarters. Alongside this, every EPS and sales target is projected to be higher for both the next few quarters and years. I'm not very caught up on the news, but I've read that their primary source of revenue, online transactions, have been increasing on a quarterly basis for years. Did Paypal just get overvalued? Because as of right now I see no reason for it to have gone down, other than to adjust to its fair value.

    Framed Disney Share Question.

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 06:56 AM PST

I can't seem to find a clear concise answer on this so I'm hoping someone here can help.

If I buy a share or multiple shares of Disney stock and have a certificate printed so it can be framed, will the stock hold market value? If there's a split does that one certificate become worth the new amount of shares? Does the certificate have to be linked to a share in a brokerage account for this to be so?

Thanks for any insight you may have.

Edit: I want to give them as gifts so linking to a brokerage account would be troublesome.

    Suggestions for cannabis stock?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 01:25 PM PST

Like a million other individuals; I'm looking for something in the long term, many of my friends tell me Aurora Cannabis, however I'm looking into SHOP due to a Motley Fool article/paper they put out.

I'm wondering if I should just invest vastly in different cannabis stocks?

Just looking for a little guidance, anything/everything is appreciated!!!

    Clarification on wash sale rule

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 07:33 AM PST

Hi I'm a bit confused about the wash sale rule and would like someone to confirm if I'm understanding it correctly.

So from Investopedia the rule states that " The rule defines a wash sale as one that occurs when an individual sells or trades a security at a loss and, within 30 days before or after this sale, buys a "substantially identical" stock or security, or acquires a contract or option to do so. "

Does this mean that in order to claim a loss, I have to have a month gap before I bought the security and a month after I sell for a loss? So if I am frequently day trading one stock and all of a sudden take a huge loss, I can't claim the loss even if I wait out a whole month after?

    Attitudes Toward Risk

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 02:05 PM PST

Howard Marks, in his last book about market cycles, states that:

    • "positive events lead to increased optimism,
    • increased optimism makes people more risk-tolerant,
    • an increase in risk tolerance causes lower risk premiums to be demanded,
    • a reduction in demanded risk premiums equates to lower demanded returns on risky asset,
    • a reduction of demanded returns on risky assets causes their prices to rise, and
    • higher prices make assets even riskier

It follows from the above that risk is high when investors feel risk is low.

Therefore the bottom line is that the greatest source of investment risk is the belief that there is no risk."

I believe it fits perfectly these days market.

Does anyone know what broker to use for binary options trading?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 01:50 PM PST

I'm in the US and I can't seem to find a good broker. I don't like how Nadex works/feels. I like how IQ Option works but it's only for people outside of the US. Does anyone know what brokers I should use?

    BABA Hong Kong IPO

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 01:17 PM PST

As an owner of BABA stock since October 2014, would there be any benefits to purchasing it on the Hong Kong exchange after they list, or would it just be redundant?

    Question about option trading

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 01:15 PM PST

If I buy a call option, and the stock never rises to the strike price, am I obligated to buy the stock or is my loss just the premium of the trade?

For example, if I bought a 100 stock call contract on AMD (currently trading at ~$36.30) for a strike price of $38.00. Would I be obligated to buy all 100 stocks in the contract if AMD never reaches $38.00, or would I only have to deal with the loss of the premium cost?

I'm really new to options trading, so any feedback would be great. Thanks!

Thoughts on ATVI within 5 trading days?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 11:04 AM PST

To me, looks like it has strong support at $54.25, and it's trading at $54.28. Furthermore, it's had five highs this month at around 56. If this pattern repeats, I should be looking for about 2% - 3% profit within five trading days.

    https://imgur.com/Jeo4K8G

In case I have to baghold, I'm comfortable averaging down if it drops another 2%.

    Reasoning:

The Blizzcon announcements were nothing special in my opinion, but the small earnings beat and COD mobile gave me a bullish outlook despite the 25 PE. Analysts sentiment seems to have a price target above my play's exit price($56 - $66).

My biggest fears with the stock are in order:

    1. The last two months of upward movement could mostly be in anticipation of announcements at Blizzcon, which may not cut it for institutional investors.
    2. Trump flips his tone on China again and announces restrictions on US game companies operating in China.
    3. The last month of sideways movement breaks out, but downwards.
    4. China cracks down on Hong Kong and punish Blizzard for walking back the Hearthstone debacle.

What are your thoughts? Is there anything I'm missing?

    Visa

    Posted: 07 Nov 2019 07:29 PM PST

Somewhat of a beginner here. I had some extra cash at the time, so I bought 12 shares of Visa almost 3 years ago at $79.55. My goal at the time was just a long term investment. No real plan besides that. My money has over doubled now, obviously. But I've began noticing that Visa has been flat for a while now. I'm trying to learn more about when to sell a stock (something I've never done). So what's everyone else's feelings? Would my money be better off in a different stock? And out of my beginner curiosity.. does the dividend increase show a decreased growth outlook? I still plan to invest with at least a 3-5 year outlook in mind.
