Peer Support and Self Management Saturday’s - A Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 05:06 AM PST

Welcome to this week's Peer Support and Self Management Thread.

This is a Safe Place to Vent, Seek Emotional Support, Share Self Management Techniques and Experiences, or Just Rant.

The goal for this thread is to help one another manage mental and physical health so we can more easily find success.

We all struggle sometimes and it is important to recognize that the struggle is part of the journey. The important thing is to learn how to overcome that adversity to grow and succeed.

Be tactful and classy in how you vent your feelings and share your frustrations. Act in a mature manner.

Ask questions, share experiences, and be there for one another. Practice empathy in giving advice and remember that what worked for you isn't guaranteed to work for others. Make suggestions, not demands of others.

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

    What is good traction?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 01:28 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

I work at a startup that rents out fully furnished, ready-to-move-in smart homes within minutes online.

The idea is that furnishing a home sucks, and so does setting up internet and utilities. So we bundle it all up and include it in the rent.

We launched in Latin America 17 days ago. Here's a summary of our traction:

    • $10K MRR in the first 7 days. That was 10 days ago.

    • Currently at $11.6K MRR.

    • 13% WoW growth rate.

    • Profitability since day one.

Unfortunately, we've had trouble fundraising with investors, with one telling us to come back when we have $20K MRR.

    What are we missing?

Sunday’s Success Stories - Celebrate Your Successes From the Past Week: Anything goes, none too small!

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 05:06 AM PST

Welcome to this week's Sunday's Success Stories Thread.

A lot of us get way too hung up on the destination and the fact that we are not there yet.

It is important to take a moment to reflect on a great quote from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., "The steps you take don't need to be big, they just need to take you in the right direction"- Jemma Simmons

This is extremely relevant to all of us in this community. We should all be more aware of the successes we achieve every day that carry us closer to our goals.

Celebrating these successes, no matter how small they are, allow us to stay motivated, focused, and happy while we struggle to achieve dreams of various sizes.

The purpose of this thread is to share our successes from the week with one another and have something to celebrate together.

So, let us know what successes you have achieved this week! Nothing is too small or insignificant!

#Because this is meant to be a safe place to support emotional and physical health there is a zero tolerance policy in effect. Be KIND. Be sure to report any conduct that is in violation of that key tenet.

Professional Services division in a startup

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 01:11 PM PST

Can anyone please give me to advice or refer me to resources on Professional Services in the tech industry?

I was approached to serve as VP and start this whole division, basically overseeing the entire lifecycle of customer management. I have the relevant background, working with clients, pre/post-sales, execution etc., yet have never had ownership on this whole thing. Today this is pretty much inexistent there.

How do I go about this, what are the must-have, and must-do's and dont's? Any input is greatly appreciated!

Making features(and positioning) better than competition?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 04:34 PM PST

Any advice during the attempt to reach PMF or after reaching PMF to insert a distinct positioning. A positioning to try to position myself to carve out certain customer segments and secure a competitive advantage?

Do you believe it is a good idea or not after finding pmf to also make additional features/products that targets emerging customer segments? What would be the general idea in gaining new customer segments, and adding new features to existing products (to continually compete effectively and grow)?

    Closing a funding round (angel)

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 05:35 AM PST

I co-founded a med tech start-up and we are looking to raise 250 K from 5-8 investors. We have 3 potential investors exploring possible investments of 25-50K. I was leaning towards a rolling close with the hope of raising the full 250K before closing the round but based on what I have read a rolling close might be problematic. My questions are the following: - Does it make sense to pick a specific closing date (ex. 1/15/20)? - What are investors concerned about/looking for when they ask about the timing of closing a round?

Where do you get feedback for your startup?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 03:37 AM PST

    Morning from 'sunny' London.

I'm working full-time as a Product designer at the moment while working on a startup on my own time and I rarely have time to go to conferences, events and get feedback in person. Are there any online tools (free) that I can use to get feedback on my startup? I'm at the validation stage so the more feedback the better, ideally, I prefer in-person but due to current circumstances that's out the question, therefore, I've to resort to online feedback. I've plugged my startup idea in a few subreddits including this one but I feel like that's not the best method because most people see it as SPAM and not help out.

    Your thoughts are appreciated

Am I using the word "vertical" correctly in this sentence on my resume?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 05:51 PM PST

    Hello,

I am a college student working on my resume. I interned at a startup accelerator, and I'm updating my experience. I'm not sure if I used "vertical" correctly here. I researched the economics of a startup that does gig event staffing expanding into construction.

Conducted research and prepared presentations for strategy consulting project on gig economy startup REDACTEDNAME, investigating new verticals for the platform

I know the grammar and sentence structure is imperfect there, but I just wanted to make sure I'm using that word right. Thanks.

Thoughts on "cooking" KPIs for next investment round?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 11:40 AM PST

I've always been a founder, but here I'm the first hire and the founder wants to make a call I'm unsure about.

We are a B2C and the founder wants to achieve 10% week over week growth by inviting more and more people to the beta launch. I would rather launch beta and see how it grows.

I understand the importance of good KPIs for fundraising, but I feel uncomfortable contriving a situation to get those numbers.

    What are your thoughts?

How much can you reasonably copy another website's CSS and information design?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2019 02:20 PM PST

Let's face it, there are a lot of incentives to copy a big companies stuff! They put tons of business dollars to research and test what works. They've had countless strategy sessions to come up with what and why for that particular audience. It might even make you appear sexier as an acquisition because you already look like another company.

My default is to try and draw inspiration across enterprises, but on this particular day of banging out user interfaces and information design, I'm just feeling lazy and really looking at one big tech company in particular.

Copyright protects some presentation stuff, but I think that's the only real protection right? How does it apply in this case if your CSS is not identical and for the most part you're copying generic things and then deviating somewhat?

i.e. most sites feature a top bar with your user icon on the right / a chatbot / a search bar..

Give early employees preferred shares, not investors?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 11:37 PM PST

Something that has been irking me lately is the (seemingly, could be wrong) common practice of issuing common stock to early employees and issuing preferred shares to investors at any stage. Why not issue preferred to early stage employees and investors until you close your seed round, then issue common? I've seen many comments and stories here, on medium, and the like of early hires being left with squat at exit. Shouldn't the people who actually built the damn thing reap the reward at least equally at exit? Investors are dime a dozen today and are starving for good deals. Startups that are actually investable should have the upper hand in the current market, and take care of their people accordingly.

Basically, reward those that really believed in the EARLY early stages. Employees and Investors. Not the investors that came along for the ride.

    Am I way off base?
