Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:44 PM PDT In February and March my kidneys stopped working and I ended up having 3 separate ambulance rides totaling over $3,000. I've been very sick ever since also and haven't exactly been on top of insurance things etc. I'm on my stepdad's insurance plan. I called the ambulance company because I saw it went to collections (I moved recently so didn't receive the letters) and they said my insurance said they sent 3 checks totaling over 3k to my address on file (my parent's address) and the checks were made out to the subscriber (my stepdad). The letters with the checks stated what and who it was for. He definitely pocketed the money. My parents aren't responding to my messages. I am SO upset. I'm literally hospitalized right now and I feel so helpless and drowning in medical debt and they know how hard things are for me... and they took my money. Is there anything I can do. Thanks. [California] UIM in differences states Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:42 PM PDT I personally live in Arizona, which is (thankfully) an excess state with UIM benefits. How exactly would a UIM claim work if your limits matched the tortfeasors? Would you not be entitled to a UIM claim if your UIM limits matched, or fell under? I guess the intent is that you shouldn't get more coverage than you'd provide another, but a response on how a UIM claim in CA works would be nice. [link] [comments] |
Illinois - 4+ car accident on icy bridge that decreased to 1 lane Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:38 PM PDT I was technically car #4 in an accident where a car #0 in front of car #1 hit their brakes to see an accident, car #1 slammed brakes, hit ice patch and we hit them also sliding at the ice patch. I only have liability and took most of the damage on the front left side of my car. Car #1 was at fault but wasn't issued citation due to weather and the sheriff stated he didn't know why they weren't salting the bridge prior. We were accident #3 on that bridge within minutes. Car #0 fled the scene and car #1 swears she hit that car before they fled. I paid for a tow to a body shop. What can I expect for out of pocket given liability insurance on my part? We have police report, cars #1 & #2 also insured, etc and I am not at fault. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |
Geico is blaming me for an accident that wasn’t my fault Posted: 31 Oct 2019 06:23 PM PDT Today a car slid out from a stop sign (it was snowing and slippery) nearly hit my car but I swerved to avoid a collision. I ended up running into a curb and I think my car has a bent axel. When I reported this to my insurance company (Geico) they said it was my fault since I "lost control of my vehicle." I have the other driver's contact info and I told Geico I could confirm that I wasn't at fault but they said under their policy, it would only not be my fault if the car had hit me. Totally backwards.... So now I have to pay my deductible and my premium will likely go up. I'm wondering if this is standard for the auto insurance industry (i.e. if a car didn't hit me but caused me to hit something else to avoid it, it's "my fault") and here's why: If I file a claim with the other driver's insurance company and they decide that she is at fault (which she admitted to me verbally), they can contact Geico and it might change Geico's decision (I confirmed this with Geico). The other driver offered to just pay for the repairs so she doesn't have to file a claim. If it isn't likely that her insurance (State Farm) will consider this not my fault, it's not worth filing a claim. So can I expect all other auto insurance companies to treat this the same way as Geico? Or is Geico just being ridiculous? Also, other driver mentioned she would pay for repairs if she didn't have to file. [link] [comments] |
6 Month insurance on someone else's car - surrendered license Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:50 PM PDT Insurance has always confused me, so hoping you can help! (Im based in Scotland, UK.) A family member has had a seizure, which means they have had to surrender their driving license for 6 months due to medical reasons. They currently lease a car, and instead of leaving it to sit for those 6 months, are looking for someone to take it for that period (whilst they continue to pay the lease). I'm getting rid of my car so this is ideal, but no idea where to start with getting cover on the car owned by them? Is it best to try and switch my current policy? Can you even get 6 month cover? Would it be easier for them to add me as a driver? But then would it effect their premium of there was in accident? In other words, help, I'm clueless where to start and have been getting nowhere fast for hours.. TIA [link] [comments] |
Young Alfred is requiring us to cover the replacement cost of house including the land Posted: 31 Oct 2019 04:12 PM PDT We are getting homeowners insurance from Young Alfred and they are quoting us a replacement cost value that is the exact dollar amount that we are purchasing the house for and the representative says they have to cover the land as well. Would this not be the fair market value of the house opposed to the replacement cost value of the house? Any help would be great as this is our first home purchase and first time getting home insurance. [link] [comments] |
Shopping for Home/Auto Insurance for my mother, agents opinions? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 07:50 PM PDT Hey all So the current homeowners insurance my mom has is pretty pathetic so I she said I was welcome to find something else that was better. Anyways I'm 26 and I have been emailing an independent agent and I emailed some captive agents and I specifically stated that I was reaching out on behalf of my mother who has a demanding job and really doesn't have the time or interest in searching as obsessively as I do. I have an accounting degree, I've worked in finance and I'm pretty familiar with insurance so I'm not asking off the wall questions that would make someone not take me seriously. Is it weird/bad that I'm stating I'm looking on behalf of someone else? I'm worried that agents will view it as a waste of their time and not really take it seriously. I didn't want pretend to be my mom, I'm just trying to get quotes to show her and then she can pick whichever one. This is for Home/Auto, total budget is close to $5k, I never mentioned a budget to anyone. Edit: More info I should probably include. I live with my mother, and I am on all of the policies so DOB, license numbers, car VINs, etc all match up that I'm obviously (I would think anyways) someone who is shopping policies for their mother. The policy documents I have given the agents have the cost on them and I am asking for more coverage which definitely does not cost less money so do I actually need to make it clear that I understand that I'm aware I'm not asking for the cheapest thing possible? I could see agents having to deal with lots of people that want everything for $7. I do have enough anxiety to avoid phone calls as much as possible and I explicitly say that I don't like phone calls and would rather do things in email. I can think things through in an email and think of stuff throughout the day or lookup a term, things I can't do in a phone call. I also had asked about products specifically for me as well which are obviously things I can approve without input from anyone else. I don't want to be an annoying client but I also don't want to be ignored. [link] [comments] |
Can Someone Explain These Auto Insurance Premiums? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 05:30 PM PDT Hello everyone. Today I received my Renewal Notice for my auto insurance through Progressive Direct Auto. I'm a 27 year old male living in Las Vegas, USA. My insurance premiums have always been high but I like cars and I like driving so I've put up with it. I currently own a 2014 Mustang GT that is still being financed through Ford which I paid about $37k USD for in July 2014. It's a few months away from being paid off. The liability premium is $750/6 months. I don't drive that car much and actually haven't driven it at all since July when I put it on non-op registration and it has sat untouched in my driveway since then. My daily driver is a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 that I paid $3k cash for earlier this year. I own this outright. The liability premium is $1045/6 months. I drive this car every day. Does the liability premium come down to tech (or lack thereof), like traction control? I can't see why I would be more "liable" to end up causing bodily injury or property damage with a truck that can barely reach 85mph on the freeway than a sports car with a 155+mph top speed. Is this truck especially prone to accidents for some reason? Prior to my 2001 Dodge I owned a 1990 Ford F150. The liability premium for that truck was $214/6 months. Progressive couldn't tell me anything other than "the premiums are determined automatically." [link] [comments] |
Obamacare offering high premium Posted: 31 Oct 2019 05:06 PM PDT I, female (36), healthy, non-smoker, no medication, called Obamacare today. The person informed me the best insurance option is Evolve PPO 334 per month, 1/3 of my income per month. and he said he would offer 70 off "financial assistant" and then took it away. Is this amount normal? [link] [comments] |
Worth it to get employer's insurance when I'm under my parents plan? (MI) Posted: 31 Oct 2019 04:42 PM PDT I'm starting a new job that pays my health insurance 100%, but I'm still under my parent's plan. My parent's plan is pretty much identical to the plan I'm offered, so I'm wondering if I should even bother taking it. They are both BCBSM Platinum plans. [link] [comments] |
New home, no escrow, when/how do I pay my initial insurance payment? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 06:31 AM PDT I am currently in the process of purchasing a new home out of state. I will be moving to Alabama. I currently don't use an escrow so I know the risks and issues that can arise if one doesn't prepare for the payments. Anyway, I am setting up my closing and I am wondering if I pay the homeowners myself before closing since I won't be using escrow. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Disability Insurance Policy Declined by Underwriter (Texas) Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:54 AM PDT Earlier this year, I moved from being a W2 employee to being a 1099 contractor. I already have my own health and life policies, but have always had disability insurance through an employer. I am single with no family, so I have no ability to provide for myself (besides savings), if I cannot work. I asked my auto/renters insurance provider to add a disability insurance (occupation-only) line to my portfolio. I received a call this morning from my agent that the underwriter would not approve my policy because I have a diagnosis of sleep apnea within the last year. She told me we can "try again in a year". Of course I don't want to be without coverage for a year. What are my options here? If I apply for a policy with a different company, am I just going to be shot down again? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:28 PM PDT My wife and I had our first kid in 2018 and I was under our "premium" plan at work. I was under the understanding that the only difference was that premium had a lower office deductable (15 vs 50) and that premium had more in state options and the advanced was a higher office visit and more options outside of the state vs no options outside our state. I choose the advanced plan for 2019. It wasn't even because it was slightly cheaper, it was because I thought I was doing the responsible thing in case we traveled out of state and my son or wife got sick and it wasn't considered an "emergency" Well we are expecting another kid (oops) and insurance isn't paying for any of the office visits claiming they "are not denying them but letting us meet our deductible". It's $2700 and it's the same deductible as the premium so I'm just confused if I screwed myself this badly? On top of that our insurance bills by year so everything leading up to January is on one deductible and the baby (if born in January) will be apart of another $2700 deductible. That seems like it should be illegal but I'll keep my opinions out of this. Does I have any hope? [link] [comments] |
Another Insurance vs. Roofer Tale Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:27 AM PDT TLDR: Insurance adjuster says roof is fine and to pay to repair it myself. Roofer friend says that is complete BS and shows me a LOT of hail strikes and wind damage (zippering). Now what? Background & Adjuster: My roof is 8-10yrs old. Not in perfect shape when we bought the home. I was home when we had a hail storm earlier this year. Didn't think too much about it. Later on we had a torrential wind & rain storm. During this rain/wind storm I saw a single drop of water drip from the cieling. I ran up into the attic, saw water trickling down the brick of the fireplace chimney on all sides. Ran up onto the roof in the storm & tarped the whole chimney. Towels, fans, trashed wet insulation, etc. Called a roofer for suspected flashing fixes. Roofer says my roof is in terrible shape due to hail damage. I called the insurance company, 2hr appointment window set, take off work, and expecting to meet roofer and adjuster. Waiting for a call from adjuster with a 30min heads up (as discussed the day before) so I can let my roofer know. Adjuster doesn't know the roofer is meeting us. Call adjuster, no answer. Doorbell rings, and the adjuster - who works for the insurance company (not a third party adjuster company) - has already finished his inspection. What?! Inspector says my roof is in great shape with a lot of life, a little wind damage here and there that can be resealed easily, maybe a nick here and there from hail which isn't an issue, a few nail heads popping up, some flashing work needed. Repairs won't even meet the deductible. He's been doing this for 30yrs and has seen it all. His "professional opinion is not continue with the claim and to simply repair it" myself. Roofer: I call the roofer to say the adjuster already left. Roofer was pulling into the neighborhood in expectation of the appointment; they must have passed each other. I tell the roofer on the phone what the adjuster says as he's turning onto my street. Roofer gets out of the truck and says adjuster is full of it and to call him back. Adjuster says his work is done and is going to the next appointment. He'll issue the report soon, already knows what the roofer is going to say, and the only thing I can do is talk to engineering. Roofer gets me up on the roof and points out a LOT of hail strikes of varying levels of concern from fiberglass showing to simple nicks in the asphault. Roofer says to wait for the report, call insurance and ask for it to be reinspected. Roofer says adjuster didn't even do a proper inspection marking out a 10ft x 10ft sample section noting wind, hail, & other damage (or something like this). Roofer states that often get complete roof replacements for less damage. Roofer states that the damage I have is significant and a just a ticking time bomb for future leaks & issues. SIDE NOTE: Roofer is an old friend I've known since T-ball. Multiple mutual friends. Working for his family roofing business that has been around for many decades. This is mentioned to convey that I do not feel the roofer is a run of the mill roofing company trying to milk money out anyone they can. Questions: Adjuster is saying roof is in great shape, but then the roofer shows me spot after spot after spot where there is obvious damage; again fiberglass is showing in some locations. Hail strikes (dents) are even apparent on the fins of my AC condensor unit outside. I was trusting of the adjuster when he talked to me, but now am really doubting everything he said after seeing the damage myself.
This post turned out to be much longer than I initially wanted, so thank you if you actually read it. I really appreciate it. Thanks in advance for anyone who answers. Car insurance for a borrowed car Posted: 31 Oct 2019 03:01 PM PDT My brother moved across the country and is cool with me borrowing his car for the next year as long as I pay for car insurance. Can I take insurance money from both sides if it was the other person's fault for the accident? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 11:02 AM PDT Hi everyone, I was recently involved in an car accident in the state of Georgia. It was determined to be the other person's fault. Being new to the claims process, I started talking with my own insurance company (Allstate). They said the damages to my car was worth $4k and sent me a check for so. I didn't cash it because I got advice from family that I should wait to talk to the other driver's insurance (Auto Owners). I finally got the police report and talked with the other insurance company. They said the car was totaled and would give me $10k. The Auto Owners insurance agent I'm taking with told me to tell my insurance company that Auto Owners will be handling the process. My question is it legal to cash in on both checks? Tl;Dr I got an accident that was the other driver's fault. I have a check for $4k from my insurance company and one coming for $10k from the other insurance company. Can I use both? Car was keyed. Chance of my rates going up if I file a claim? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 02:27 PM PDT I live in California. My car (2016 Corolla) was keyed on the hood of the car. I haven't filed a police report yet because I haven't the faintest idea when or where it happened. I first noticed it in my own garage. I made a number of errands the day before (parked it 5 places total), and it could have been any one of them (or perhaps even earlier... I just noticed it). There are two marks total, about 6 inches long. The marks are deep and have laid the paint bare, and have even dented the hood. I have a $250 deductible. That's fine with me, but my bigger concern are my rates going up. I was involved in a single-car accident two years ago (lost control of my car in bad weather) and it was a $2000 repair. My rates are just starting to come down from this incident. I've been involved in two other not-at-fault accidents (one with this car, one with another) over the past 5 years. Never had a speeding ticket or other driving infractions. I hate the eye-sore of this and would like it fixed, but want to know my chances of my rates going back up if I do. What are your thoughts? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 02:12 PM PDT Need advice re brand new Yukon hit Three weeks ago I was hit from behind in my brand new Yukon Denali the day before I'd owned it for one month. The damage was significant enough that the seatbelts would not work rendering it un-drivable. We were at a stoplight and he was stopped - I know because my friend was right behind him - and my guess is he saw the green, didn't look to see that traffic wasn't moved, gunned it and plowed into me. He totaled his car (2017 Jeep Cherokee) airbags deployed etc. I sustained whiplash - was treated at urgent care, it got better over the next week and this week has started to bother me more. I'm seeing a chiropractor tomorrow to get an opinion. Anyhow, I opted to use their insurance, Progressive, and he must had admitted complete fault as they did not even take my statement. They have put me in a rental car - one upgrade from a standard car because of my job needing extra seating capacity but no where near the level of my Yukon Denali. I chose to use a shop I trust and my car is currently waiting for it's turn to be worked on and looked at more closely. The rep from Progressive says the quote was about $5200 however when I called the shop, who I trust and know will do what's right for me, he said they really won't know until they have it up and that the adjuster was being very "cheap". For example, he said Progressive said it'll need new seat belt retention pieces but he sees it that it will need a whole new seatbelt system that ties into the computer for airbags, etc. Anyhow, I know this will be a battle for diminished value and the dealer and the shop both have people they recommend to help me to determine the diminished value but I'm trying to decide if I should hire an attorney as well. This car was listed for $78k, I paid $68k. Obviously I understand that value diminished as soon as I bought it but clearly being in an accident had hurt the value. Does anyone have advice or experience with anything like this? Misc details - he was cited, and this is in NC. [link] [comments] |
Certificate of Liability Insurance question Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:06 PM PDT tl;dr - Is it unusual to be asked to include an additional insured entity that is located outside the United States? I'm in New Jersey, and my company has been hired by a longtime client to do work at a property they manage. They sent over a Certificate of Insurance Liability form for us to complete, which is not at all unusual. What is strange is my insurance agent telling me in her 30-year career, she's never seen a company include an additional insured entity not based in the U.S. In this case, in addition to our client and the property owner, we're being asked to include an Austrian bank, BAWAG P.S.K. as an Additional Insured Entity. My agent seems baffled by this and said she won't include them. I asked her to explain why and all she would say is, "I've never seen it, it's just not something that's done." I told her to send me back the form without the bank, and I'll submit and see what happens. Can anyone help me understand the issue here? Thanks. [link] [comments] |
Can you receive STD and Lost Wages? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 01:02 PM PDT I was in a car accident with my Co-Worker.. A truck hit us, but she was suppose to stop... The insurance company labeled it shared liability (co worker 80% and the truck driver 20%) My PIP is covering my medical bills that accrued to 2k and still going. I was trying to get a claim set up for my lost wages under my PIP, but i already received 60% from STD from my job, but i'm currently pursuing to get the Lost Wages for atleast the 40%. I have progressive and live in the state of Florida. Shouldn't i still be in entitled for the 40%? The Co-Worker doesn't have bodily injury insurance... so.... idk i'm actually really relying on these funds due to debt... what should i do? I was off of work for atleast 13 weeks. Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:09 AM PDT Health Insurance Advice Hello all! I was referred to this thread from a different reddit and just wanted to see if i could get some recommendations regarding health insurance plans that don't have too high of a premium but still offer good benefits. I have been out of insurance for over a year (got hit pretty hard last year for taxes but thankfully they got ride of that for this upcoming year) and i'm finally in a better place financially where i can pay to have health insurance again. Unfortunately i already have a $3,000 hospital bill from a couple of months ago that i am putting $200 a month towards, and since i work as a server in a restaurant and have other bills, such as rent and a car payment, i don't have a set income each month and i have other bills that would be a priority over health insurance. Since it's time for open enrollment i'm trying to look for a plan that would start on Nov. 1st, but each site i've looked at needs around $100 upfront and i'm not sure if/when i'll be able to pay that. This wouldn't be too big of an issue if i could wait a couple weeks to enroll, but i have a dentist appointment next week to drain an abscess in my gums and they need $450 to perform the surgery+additional fees for the antibiotics and teeth cleaning. I've already given them $200 just in getting the diagnoses without insurance, but there's no way i can pay the amount they need without insurance. Does anyone know of any insurance companies that wouldn't charge too much upfront? I wouldn't mind paying $100-150 each month for insurance but i can't pay $100 upfront right now and i desperately need to get on a plan before i go into surgery next week. I am needing dental insurance for the dentist visit, and then medical/prescription for the antibiotics i'll be given after. Thanks in advanced for any advice! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 12:46 PM PDT So I was driving down the highway in heavy traffic, in California, and a shredded chunk of truck tire whipped out from under the car in front of me. It then hit the front of my car and I drove over it. There was no way I could have avoided it. Had I swerved I would have hit the vehicles next to me. Whatever it was that hit me damaged my front bumper and skirt around the base of the bumper, so much so that I had to pull over, remove the skirt and strap/tape up the bumper to continue operating the vehicle. I'm on a road trip and called my insurance company the next day to file a claim. The adjuster sent me a notice after our call saying that I am 100% at fault for this accident. However I don't believe I am in the slightest. Any advice on how and if I can fight this? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Oct 2019 10:09 AM PDT I apologize in advance for how this question makes me seem like I'm trying to take advantage of the insurance industry. But I have a serious question. My car got side-swiped today and the guilty driver left me a note with her insurance info. I independently went to two auto body shops to get quotes to see if we could work it out between us without getting insurance involved. Turns out that is not going to happen. So, am I allowed to ask the insurance company for the check to be written to me and I just pocket the money or does the car absolutely have to be repaired for the insurance to pay out any money? Sorry for this sounding so selfish. [link] [comments] |
Why does Root force me to take comprehensive coverage? Posted: 31 Oct 2019 09:40 AM PDT Screenshots: http://imgur.com/a/yg8HNhG I don't have the option to want the cheapest quote. I had Root on the same car in the past and I was paying $55. No accidents since or anything like that. Edit: lol downvoted for asking. Insurance makes people salty. [link] [comments] |
