If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • How old are you?
    • Are you employed/making income? How much?
    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?
    • Any big debts?
    • Any other relevant financial information will be useful to give you a proper answer.

Netflix co-founder on a potential password sharing crackdown: 'You’re not scared, are you?'

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 06:55 PM PST

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/password-sharing-crackdown-netflix-hbo-210830952.html

Streaming giants and cable companies, led by Netflix (NFLX) and HBO (T), are reportedly considering ways to crack down on password sharing among streaming users.

"You're not scared, are you?" Netflix Co-Founder & First Netflix CEO Marc Randolph told Yahoo Finance's YFi PM, later adding: "You know there's abuse and that's not fair."

It's common among streamers to share platform passwords with their friends and family to cut costs and ensure easy accessibility— but Randolph says now the time has come for a crackdown because of what he calls "broad cases of flagrant abuse." According to a recent research note from MoffettNathanson, about 14% of Netflix users report they are using a password from "someone outside of my household."

In a Shocking Development Trump Casts Doubt On Trade Deal With Pushback on Tariff Rollback

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 08:08 AM PST

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-11-08/trump-says-u-s-hasn-t-agreed-to-full-tariff-rollback-with-china

Markets seem pretty steady over this one, mayhaps they've finally learned to embrace the trade talk cycle?

Someone hit me with that trade war cycle pic again.

E: bros I really felt like I shouldn't have had to explicitly say this but obviously a walk back was probable and the use of "shocking" here was sarcastic.

My dad/ business partner died. Need someone to talk to about investment ideas

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 04:26 AM PST

Long story short, my dad was my business partner, we didn't have a great relationship so we stuck to just business. He very suddenly and unexpectedly killed himself last week. Been left with this void where I'd normally call him and say " hey look at this maybe we should buy/sell it" and now I got no one to do that with. It's weird. I've always believed this stuff is done better in teams. People think of things I don't and vice versa. The repertoire is important for success I think. So anyone thats willing to shoot the shit about this stuff, please contact me, I'd appreciate it.

In what to put money as an 18yo with no expenses?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 04:42 PM PST

    Hello r/investing

I am an 17m who wil be turning 18 in a few weeks, i still live at my parents place and for the next 3 years I still will be.

Ive been reading books about investing but im not quite sure about what to invest in, so i am looking for all the advice i can get. So far i have no practical experience, only the theoretical basic knowledge.

I have saved about 3,000€ on my bank account and im planning on working by the school which could generate about 100€ every month to put aside, pretty much for the next 2 years. As mentioned, i dont have any bills and all my expenses are just on myself.

What would you do in my situation?

    Thanks in advance.

    portfolio rebalancing

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 02:51 PM PST

I've just started investing outside of my 401k. I've created my own "fund" through m1 finance and set the stock %'s accordingly.

What are the pro's and cons of rebalancing vs letting the better performing stocks naturally take a larger % of the pie? How often should one rebalance?

    Why did Berkshire dump Disney?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 04:10 AM PST

Looking at where the industry is now and the recent gains, it seems like a monumental mistake to have dumped Disney and to never get back in. Instead they bought AMZN at a ridiculous P/E. Does someone know what are the issues Buffett or his lieutenants see that could be problematic with Disney long term?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 03:17 AM PST

    Hi all,

Looking to find the most concentrated ETFs/funds (e.g. medical devices) that have around <50 securities. Any suggestions ? FYI my company's policy dictates I can't purchase single securities hence this is the next best thing.

    Thanks!

"It must have positive reported earnings in the most recent quarter, as well as over the four most recent quarters."

Does this mean you could have 1 loss quarter, but as long as all 4 quarters combined are positive you are good?

Is it a bad sign that the architect of the broadcaster's video streaming strategy, is leaving CBS as it prepares to merge with sister company Viacom Inc, or is it a matter of bureaucratic redundancy?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 12:53 AM PST

Jim Lanzone , the head of CBS Corp.'s Interactive unit and the architect of the broadcaster's video streaming strategy, is leaving CBS as it prepares to merge with sister company Viacom Inc.

Mr. Lanzone will be succeeded as chief executive of CBS Interactive by Marc DeBevoise , the president and chief operating officer of the unit. Mr. Lanzone will stay at CBS until the end of the year, after which he will join venture- capital firm Benchmark Capital as executive-in-residence.

CBS Interactive, which Mr. Lanzone joined in 2011, encompasses much of the company's digital operations, including the video streaming service CBS All Access, the streaming news channel CBSN and portfolio of websites including CBSSports.com and CNET. The unit's digital properties drew 190 million unique views in September, according to Comscore , making it one of the largest internet brands in the U.S.

Mr. Lanzone's departure comes as Viacom and CBS are in the process of combining their operations for the merger, which is expected to close later this year. Wall Street hasn't reacted well to the merger, with Viacom and CBS shares down more than 20% since the August announcement.

Viacom and CBS have yet to articulate a direct-to-consumer video streaming strategy that encompasses the combined company's TV and digital properties, which will be vying for online viewers alongside rivals that are launching their own expensive streaming services.

Last week, Bloomberg News reported that AT&T Inc.'s WarnerMedia purchased the rights to South Park, one of the longest-running shows on Viacom's Comedy Central Channel, for between $450 million and $500 million .

    • 90% SWDA
    • 10% EIMI

    20% Bonds:

    • 100% AGGU

    Through IB.
My base currency is not Euro or Dollars.

    Puts in overhyped MJ stocks

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 04:01 PM PST

I think a good risky play is to play puts on MJ earnings next week. The MJ stocks increase off CDC vitamin E blah blah blah was dumb and worthless. I think MJ stocks are going to post a nice loss on earnings as usual and all the hype kids are gonna lose their money. Puts already in place for CRON and CGC will be soon to follow

    Tax loss harvesting question

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 01:26 PM PST

Let's say I sell some losers in mid-December to counteract some taxes for this year. When I file taxes for this year, how does the IRS know I didn't purchase a portion of these shares back in January to have it count as a wash sale? Doesn't the applicable 1099 form show only transactions in this year? Would the taxes saved be clawed back the following year?

    Sorry if dumb question.

What happens to ETF holders when the asset is liquidated during a downturn?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 11:52 PM PST

Say you own some new ESG ETF from Invesco. You put $100 in it, the market tanks 30%, the ETF trades at $70 sideways for a while. Invesco decides to liquidate the ETF (for whatever reasons), the ETF holders get back $70?

What's the deal with negative shareholder equity?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 01:30 PM PST

Oftentimes I come across comments on this sub that talk about why a certain company is a bad investment because of negative shareholder equity. While I agree that negative shareholder equity is generally a red flag, it isn't always the case and in some cases can actually be a good thing.

A blog post that does a really good job explaining it

    Here's a shorter explanation from a redditor

    ETFs

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 12:02 PM PST

I want to invest in ETFs, I know how to judge technology stocks but have no idea on how to evaluate ETF stocks. I am looking for publicly traded ETFs I can purchase through RobinHood or similar.

Would it be better to purchase an ETF than diversify a portfolio of multiple stocks myself that I am mostly interested?

Anyone else longing CRM into earnings at this point?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 12:36 PM PST

Poised to break out. Benioff is an excellent CEO who just won a Magic Award of some sort. Their recent Tableau acquisition could add value to their MuleSoft acquisition. Obama speaking at the Dreamforce conference. Colin Powell on the board of directors etc. etc.

    Edit:

    Notable speakers at Dreamforce

Tim Cook (CEO of Apple) Emilia Clarke (Actress) Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka (UN Under-Secretary General & Executive Director of UN Women) Marco Bizzarri (President & CEO of Gucci) Barbara Humpton (President & CEO of Siemens) Oscar Munoz (President & CEO of United Airlines) Bernard J Tyson (Chairman & CEO of Kaiser Permanente) Deepak Chopra

    And much, much more
