A guide to auditor - client communication

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 11:56 AM PST

God bless you industry fucks who actually give us public plebes a clean set of books for a return or financials.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:30 PM PST

You're the real ones. If I get one more "bookkeeper" who gives me a quickbooks file that I have to make 30 journal entries to just to make it presentable I may cry.

I live for the client that my job is basically as simple as importing the trial balance and agreeing the workpapers to what they've provided.

2 yrs of public accounting experience and a MAcc degree, and only making $48K. Advice appreciated.

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 09:06 PM PST

I work in Northeast Florida (Jacksonville) for a small (< 10 people) public accounting firm. I interned here for 2 consecutive tax seasons, then began full time in January 2018. I have a Master's in Taxation (obtained in April 2018) and am approaching my two year mark, and am making $48,000. I work on both tax and audit projects such as: 1040s, 1120S, 1065, 990s, compilations, reviews, audits, and bookkeeping. I have spoken to recruiters who say I am being underpaid by at least $10K. I have checked the NACE calculator, Salary.com, and Glassdoor and they all say I am worth about $55K . Do those numbers sound right to you guys?

I love my coworkers, but I am really unhappy with my current compensation. Our clients are mostly small businesses and local non-profits. I feel that I'll never see huge pay increases in a small firm like this. I want to make more money, but I am unsure of where to go. It seems like general ledger accounting is not paid as well as tax or internal audit. However, I worry that my lack of corporate experience will hinder me from getting a tax or internal audit role. With 2 years of experience, can I move to an internal audit/tax role and still ask for close to $60K? Is 2 years (plus 8 months of interning) enough for me to get a "senior" position in a corporate setting? Or will I need to be applying to "staff" roles?

    Thanks for your help.

WORRIED. Deloitte Intern Background Credit Check

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:22 PM PST

Soo, I accepted an Internship with Deloitte (yay). I'm worried about the background check.

I have a credit card that I'm in the process of paying off. It has about a 5500 balance of the 7250 limit. Overall, my credit usage is 40 something percent w/other debt. Is this something that would cause them to revoke my offer? Anybody been in a similar situation?

    New accounting student

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:05 PM PST

    Hi to the accounting subreddit.

I'm a new accounting student going for my bachelors and I've been working hard, but it seems like I'm a massive idiot and am not picking anything up. Did any of you feel this clueless in the beginning of your studies?

Edit: probably a good thing to note that I've only gone through accounting 1 and am working on accounting 2. These are my first 2 classes in this field.

    AUD Exam done!

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 02:48 PM PST

Just got out of audit today and after the exam I just felt so............HUNGRY. I read every question twice to make sure I saw through their trickery! Took the whole 4 hours with only 5 minutes left on the clock and overall felt like I did alright. I mainly used Wiley and also Becker from when I was at Big 4 (yes I left, fuck yeah now I have a life!) I can honestly say I didn't guess through anything, even the entire TBS. Had a hard time with maybe 10 MCQs of topics I certainly learned already but the questions were too damn hard or worded weird.

I listened to the videos on my 40-50 min daily commute to work and that definitely helped cement the information in my mind when I've read through the topic the previous night. Reading along with SASs definitely helped me understand more. Sounds like too much studying but I just have a decent schedule now that allows for focused studying. Other than that, it wasn't too bad. Stick with it folks we can do this!

Other things that helped me out too was the sample exam in AICPA's website. I did them once in the beginning of my study and 2 nights before the exam. It was that kind of difficulty I felt for the actual exam so I recommend that. Wiley's deep dive videos were great and the test bank was about as difficult as the exam. Maybe a tiny brush up on journal entries and ratios; be familiar with attest and accounting/review services. Code of Ethics. If you're ever thinking like "mhhhhmm why would Jimmy CPA do that?! Scandalous/shady as hell" then there's something wrong with compliance to Code of Ethics. Definitely know your internal controls and the transaction cycles like it's the inner workings of your dreams (yes I've lost my mind from studying for this exam but who hasn't). I found a 2 year old excellent textbook by Arens on Integrated Audit and for someone like me who has no audit work experience since I was in the tax practice, IC was kinda tough coz there were so many possible answers to one question.
SO the text helped explain more difficult topics. By no means I'm not a genius, very average student but the old saying that repetition is key and I did MCQ's every free moment I had. Or I googled stuff as my method of learning that topic as I follow along Wiley's text. Just like we are googling now reading reddit, I googled shit coz listening to Wiley's lecture was gonna put me to sleep. Anyway sorry for the long novel, just wanna say it ain't so hard if you study well. And now I will eat a big fat burger and sleep. Good luck ya'll still in the journey!

How Long Do You Tend to Stay at a Job?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 06:57 PM PST

How long do you typically stay at a company before switching? I've been at mine ~ 2 years 5 months. Getting real sick of it, and I've only seen 3% raises despite a "4" rating. More and more work is getting thrown on me without much incentive. It's good experience, but I'm not motivated anymore with the crappy salary and dull working environment (co-workers, industry, etc.)

At what point in coursework can I begin applying to accounting jobs? (career change)

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:21 PM PST

Hi everyone, I am going back to school part-time to make a career change into the accounting field. I currently work in business strategy/market research. Due to changes in my job function at my current company (and a difficult boss..), I have started to look for a new job. However, given my impending career shift, I am wondering if it is possible to apply to accounting jobs sooner than later? Or if I should maybe just try to stick it out at my current company until I hit that point in my coursework.

For reference, to-date I've taken/currently taking the basic sequence of Financial Accounting & Managerial Accounting. In the Spring 2020 semester, I will take Intermediate I & II (my university does 8 week block schedules). Taking classes part-time, I have an anticipated graduation date of Fall 2021, completing a post-bacc accounting certificate program that will enable me to sit for the CPA exam in my state.

I am currently enjoying the financial accounting more-so, and would ideally like a financial reporting type accounting role in private industry. I have ~4 years of insurance/financial services industry experience in my current career field, so I hope I can leverage that in an interview to try to transition into an accounting role in the insurance/financial services industry.

I sincerely appreciate any advice or help you can offer!! Thank you!

Moving from Audit to 'Investment Analyst' - Advice needed

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 07:10 PM PST

Almost-CPA here, looking to finally get out of auditing.

I'm currently being interviewed for a job as an investment analyst for a university. It looks super interesting, pays well, and I have some experience with investments from my audits.

Financial reporting is always something I've wanted to get into, which this position would not be. My question is, would accepting this position, and gearing off towards investments, hinder my chances at going into financial reporting/controller type work later on?

I think this position would be awesome, but i'm fearing it will result in me 'specializing' too much into one area and take away any opportunities in the future.

TIL that Khan Academy is now a full fledged nonprofit helping advance education. I'm sure many of you ended up on Khan Academy YouTube videos on a night before a test getting help with a concept in undergrad.

They accept BAT (basic attention token). Brave Browser is a great browser built by the same folks. Has built in ad block and allows giving tips with BAT with a built in wallet.

Do yourself and great organization a favour and get the browser and throw Khan Academy a tip. I think you get bonus for downloading the mobile browser.

This is not a shill. I'm just a dude who appreciates good content and likes the Brave browser.

    Leaving public before tax season?

    Posted: 05 Nov 2019 05:44 AM PST

Just got my first job offer from a large corporation. Took a pay cut, hopefully short term. After 8 years in public I'm thrilled to be trying something new. Best of all, NO TAX SEASON.

Anyone else making the switch before tax season?

    Forecasting metrics Help

    Forecasting metrics Help

I was given the following metrics for an assignment. I have data for January through March. I am supposed to forecast these out through December using Excel. I was wondering what the best methodologies for each metric would be to forecast these out? I considered average growth for the Completed Trips, forecasting it in a linear fashion. But I am unsure about the other metrics and expenses. Any insight would be helpful!
