When accountants say it’s important to create a strong paper trail in case they get hit by bus tomorrow, is that a figure of speech or are they being optimistic?

FIRED from top 10 firm! what to do now??

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 05:14 PM PST

So on Friday I was semi-unexpectedly fired...It was expected in the sense that I received a bad performance review 3 months ago, but unexpected in the sense that I had raised that not much work was coming my way as an issue with my manager and be brushed it off that it was just "quiet at the moment", and during other catch ups the chat was mostly positive and about things I had been doing well. The last catch up I had with my manager was only two weeks ago and was just business as usual.

Anyway, I was pulled into the partner's office on Friday afternoon told that it's "best for" me that I get a fresh start somewhere else, because I am not where I am expected to be and that I will forever be playing catch up. Was told to leave early and think about what I want to do over the weekend (i.e. essentially resign or get terminated, what sort of notice period I want to find time to get a new job).

How do I play this out from now?

Honestly I just want to walk in Monday morning, hand in my resignation letter, and walk out. TBH I don't need the money and don't feel compelled to stay around for a couple of weeks so that the directors look better and can make it seem like I left happily because we agreed it "wasn't for me", when I was really pushed. I think it's in my interest to just walk now and focus on the next opportunity.

I guess I am also just venting because although in hindsight it seems like it was coming, there wasn't much communication and I was getting mixed signals.

    Thoughts appreciated!

edit* one of the partners also suggested that I could perhaps stay for another two weeks to look for work and they would "organise a lunch with my colleagues" to send me off. I thought that was a ridiculously dumb suggestion...like yeah I am so excited for my last meal with everyone while on death row before you send me to be executed

One time health issue = death sentence in public accounting?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 10:01 PM PST

Failing out of Big 4 has been one of my biggest life setbacks. I still have bouts of panic about failing again. I started during a busy period with an illness, which made it hard to concentrate and work the necessary hours. I'd told my recruiter that I preferred to postpone my start date but was told it was non-negotiable. So I started work and hoped I'd get better, but it got worse.

I'd had no accounting work experience and was a MIS major in college. So starting out was tough given that everyone in my team had their CPA and BA in Accounting/MAcc.

I started to fall behind and couldn't keep up due to my illness. 8 weeks in, I was hospitalized for two weeks and then bedridden for three.

When I returned to work, everything seemed OK. Then it began to go downhill. I was told I didn't have potential. For every review, my senior would have a laundry list of every mistake I made. I'm sure my manager was behind it. They said I didn't make effort but really I was uncomfortable with the environment - this other staff who they'd rated very highly left after only 9 months, and he was treated much better than I was.

I switched to industry, but it has PA hours without the potential, benefits (no dinners or free rides ever), or even salary. I'm not even paid as much as I was before the Big 4 gig. 55 hour weeks are the norm now. I work more than I did at Big 4 during non-busy season. The only positive is that my colleagues are nicer.

Do you think a one time health issue is a death sentence or can strong performance overcome it? I regret not having sacrificed more to salvage my job.

    Life as an Accountant

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 12:17 PM PST

Hey everyone. As we all know, life as an accountant can be sometimes stressful and challenging. I am currently trying to figure out how one could make the life of an accountant a lot easier or fulfilling.

I have two very simple questions:

    1. As an accountant, what are the 2 biggest issues you are dealing with in life?
    2. Regarding your life as an accountant, what would you wish for more than anything else?

Thanks so much in advance---looking forward to reading your answers

Was just told I've been let go. What now?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 07:16 PM PST

Saying I got fired is bad for future job hunting, but either way I'm just a tad upset that this just came out of nowhere.

Still, while I know getting back on the horse is an inevitability, I'm curious if anyone has any advice on the matter of "What to do now?" that I might not have thought of.

So far I have plans to update my resume and job website profiles, and to immediately get back to job hunting next week. Is this a healthy mind set and strategy, or are there some variables at play I haven't considered that would make this a bad course of action?

    EinserAmper vs. BDO

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 06:49 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

I have 2 offers for an Audit Associate position from BDO in LA and EisnerAmper in SF. BDO is offering 62k and I would have to rent out an apartment while EisnerAmper is offering 68k and I would live for free at home. Is BDO's 'prestige' worth a 6k paycut? Is it worth trying to negotiate a raise from BDO?

Is it hard to find work as an accountant without a internship?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 06:33 PM PST

So I am going back to school in the spring for a second BA in accounting and I will be working full time so I don't have the time to do an internship. Thankfully it will only take me about two years to complete my degree, but I'm worried about my ability to get hired as I keep hearing people say that you need to have an internship to succeed.

Anyone's firm use Oracle's NetSuite? Is it a good ERP product? Does it have a growth future in your opinion? A recruiter reached out to me hiring for the role of a NetSuite Consultant.

Will the US ever get 3 day or 4 day workdays?

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 09:03 PM PST

asking because i saw some reddit post link to an article that says people are more productive and happier.

given that roughly 80% of the posts here mention burnout, wanting to quit/transfer/switch careers/never having enough time for enjoying life makes me question if this the accounting industry will ever have this

...Away from accounting and it feels so good! I'm most of the way through my first semester as an anthropology major and I love it. I put an ungodly amount of thought into this, and I know it's not a super secure major but at least I'll be doing what I love.

Do a line of coke for me boys, I'm gonna go read an article written from the perspective of plants.

I honestly don’t mind working long hours

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 01:23 PM PST

I'm only a month in as a tax staff 1 at big4 in nyc. But I honestly don't mind working long hours. Ill stay till 10+ if I have to.

The only thing giving me anxiety is having to start studying cpa and I haven't started... finished Half of F1 of Becker review FAR... I can't wait till I pass FAR, then I'll at least know it's possible.

Any tips for working and studying? Senior said he did his studying in the morning 5-9 before work.
