    My husband and I were approaching a stop sign this morning (about 5 feet from actually stopping, probably going about 2mph) when a cop on a motorcycle turned onto the street we were on. He made a very wide turn and was looking back over his shoulder, not at the road in front of him, while he turned. He was headed right for our car, looked back at road and tried to correct, but still managed to swipe our car over the driver's side rear tire. He called his supervisor who showed up and talked to the cop for 15-20 min. They both approached us afterwards and the supervisor said "okay so looks like you guys hit each other. We're good here, here's some paperwork that tells you how to view the report in a few days." My husband was like "...yeah he took the turn pretty wide." but the supervisor never asked us what happened and didn't acknowledge what my husband said. We were too intimidated to get into a "he said she said" with two cops. Luckily, the damage was minimal and we were able to buff it out so my main concern is our insurance rates. Is this going to raise our rates? Do I have to report it to my insurance since there's a police report, even though there's nothing to get fixed? Are insurance companies at all sympathetic to situations like this? We're normally good at standing up for ourselves and would call and explain to insurance, but the fact that it's us vs. police makes this hard. This sucks!!

    My car got hit and insurance is sending me to have it fixed, but now I have the opportunity to buy a new car and I’d rather use the repair money as a down payment.

    I was in an accident a few months ago. The other car and I both had State Farm. State Farm said she was at fault and asked me what I'd like to do. I said that I'd like to use one of their preferred body shops and they'd pay the shop directly to get it fixed.

    Well now my parents are looking to buy my mom her dream car and are willing to sell us their old car instead of trading it in. Instead of getting my car fixed, I'd like to take the money from insurance and use it to help us buy the car from my parents.

    How should I bring this up with insurance? I thought of just telling them we want to use our own repair shop and ask them to cut us a check, but that seems dishonest and I wouldn't want it to cause me problems down the road. Can I just tell them the situation and have them write us a check? The damage is costly to repair but the car isn't worth much so getting it fixed won't bump our trade in value much.

    Personal Lines Agents for Home Policies: While I suspect most people think a "total loss" is their biggest worry when buying a policy, what are the actual most common claims that are paid? I suspect they aren't for total losses.

    Does anyone know of an app used specifically to make an itemized list with photos for insurance?

    Ideally I'm looking for an app that I can type in the item description, price, maybe serial number and snap a few photos and then tap add.

    Once I'm done it could have the ability to export as a list of items and photos in a PDF or spreadsheet.

    I can't seem to find one. I'm on Android but wife has and iPhone so either or works.

    I hit a parked motorcycle :/

    Long story short: it was 6am and I backed into a parked motorcycle while heading to a class. I just didn't see it. It tipped over leaving a few visible damages. I left a note and the owner called, quoted me around $1900 (owner has been really understanding and seemingly honest). My question is do I pay out of pocket or file a claim? I have Geico but when I called to ask about filing a claim I was told I wouldn't know whether my monthly payment would go up until I filed the claim. Does anyone have experience filing this type of claim with Geico? TLDR; backed into a parked motorcycle. Should I pay out of pocket or file a claim and pay deductible, risking monthly premium increase?

    Esurance willing to pay me to add my grandmother’s car to my policy

    Hi all, so some background info.

    I'm a 20 year old with an at fault accident so I pay $1216 per six months to fully insure my Accord which I'm fine with. I was playing around in the app and I wanted to see how much it would be to insure my grandmother and her car since she lives with me and her car is a 99 and she drives 1k a year. Well instead of it costing anything, it actually drops my premium from $1216 to $1130 so I'm getting paid to insure her and her car.

    I was considering doing this for saving money but am wondering if it can cause any complications down the line such as it being more expensive to have her car on my policy compared to just my own car, but the rep told me I can remove her at any time and she's already insured so if she had an accident, she'd be going through her policy and not mine.

    The rep told me it's illegal for her to be double insured but after doing some research, I found that it's not illegal and it's only illegal if she double dipped in the event of an accident.

    TLDR: Adding my grandma saves $80 but should I do it or no?

    After the incident we both parked on the shoulder a cop came filed a report and I got a ticket for careless driving. The other driver that I hit just drove off without us exchanging information. Am I still liable to damage done to his vehicle?

    Involved in 3 Car Accident - What to Expect?

    MA - Last week I was involved in a three car accident where I am assuming I will be held liable. A brief summary of what happened is I was pulling out of a street which slopes up and merges right, and checked to make sure no one was coming on my left (a car on the right flashed me to cede right of way). Anyway I must have missed a pickup heading towards me due to the rain or his headlights not being on, but he swerved to avoid me and hit my bumper and a little bit of my hood then hit the car waiting for me to turn. Thankfully there were no injuries, but my car may be close to being totalled (anywhere from $2,500 - $4,500, car bought 5 months ago for $6,000), and the car which waited for me is almost definitely totalled. The truck which hit both cars ironically seems to be fine aside from a medium sized bumper dent and some debris stuck in the hubcap, nothing exceeding more than $500 or so. I was wondering what I can expect in the future. Thanks!

    COBRA Coverage termination notification due to premium non-payment. Premiums were paid, and I have documentation showing dates and times. Administrator is now claiming they have no record of the account number they provided on initial enrollment document. Please Help!

    I received notification that my COBRA coverage was being cancelled due to non payment of premiums. The premiums were paid in full, several days in advance of the actual due date.

    When my wife lost her job, I spoke with representatives at Health Care Service Corporation, who administers the program for BCBS of IL. Part of that conversation was that I wanted to set up an automatic bill payment, which the CSR said wasn't offered by the insurer for COBRA coverage. I asked whether it would be possible to use my banks bill pay feature, and the representative walked me through where to send payments, how the payment needed to be titled (HCSC) and what to put in the memo line (the Account ID referenced on the enrollment document). I did as instructed, and the first 3 payments were credited correctly.

    When I called HCSC customer service line to sort things out, the CSR I spoke to claimed that he was unable to find any reference of the original account ID in their system. When he was able to locate our coverage, he confirmed that payment was received for 3 months, but no premiums were received for the periods starting 09/01/19. I was told that since the coverage had been terminated, I would have to file an appeal to reinstate the policy, or receive a refund of premiums.

    When I looked closer, I noticed that the delivery method was changed from a physical check to an electronic funds transfer for the payment I made 08/25/19, for the 09/01/19 coverage period, ie the first period HCSC is claiming non-payment for.

    My bank is adamant that in order for the payment to go EFT, HCSC would have needed to initiate the process, as well as provide receiving account information in order for this change to have occurred. They wouldn't have changed the delivery method otherwise.

    I work in the financial industry, and have grown to trust insurance companies about as far as I can throw their corporate headquarters. My wife is currently on a $15K a month medication, and I can't help but think that this may have something to do with our coverage termination. She's had 3 refills during time period in question, so I'm expecting a $45,000 bill to come any day now...

    As I draft my appeal request letter, I'm wondering if there is any specific language I should include, or statutes I should reference? Is there a specific department I should request to speak to? Should I get an attorney involved prior to filing the appeal request? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Arbitration, rear end collision

    Hi all, I am not well versed in the insurance claims process so hopefully you can help me out. This happened in New Jersey, my insurance is State Farm, other guys is Metlife. The crash happened around 7 months ago. I was waiting in stop and go traffic on a busy highway when I get rear ended quite hard pushing me into the car in front of me. Police report was made and it states "operator vehicle 3 reported following behind vehicle 2 when he observed vehicle 2 stop for traffic but could not brake in time". I thought this would be clear cut him being at fault but his insurance is denying liability and is sending it to arbitration. I am just wondering what I can expect from this. Getting answers from them is like pulling teeth. Thanks in advance.

    Worth making homeowner's claim for 'equipment breakdown' after replacing furnace?

    I have coverage from Nationwide for equipment breakdown, with a $500 deductible. I recently had to replace my furnace; HVAC technician diagnosed it as a cracked heat exchanger. Total cost was around $3500. I forgot to more thoroughly document the issue, although this was last week so I think I can get the HVAC company to back up my claim.

    Is it worth making a claim? My coverage includes

    (1) Physical loss or damage originating within: boilers, fired or unfired pressure vessels, vacuum vessels, and pressure piping, all normally subject to vacuum or internal pressure other than static pressure of contents

    (2) All mechanical, electrical, electronic, or fiber optic equipment

    Caused by, resulting from or consisting of: - Mechanical breakdown, - Electrical or electronic breakdown or - Rupture, bursting, bulging, implosion, or steam explosion

    Coverage excludes

    Physical loss or damage caused by or resulting from: - wear and tear

    Plan year not the same as when oop renews

    So recently I was hospitalized. I met my oop, and assumed since my plan year started August 1st, that I would be covered until July 31st. This is not the case, as I was told that my plan year is from August 1- July 31, but my oop/deductible runs on a calendar year.

    So appointments I had last January count towards my current oop, even though I hadn't even chosen my current plan then.

    So if this is the case, if I was hospitalized lets say, last spring before I chose my current plan (chose in July), then I would have known I would have already spent a lot and chosen a tiny oop? And then not had to pay hardly anything oop?

    I am very confused by this, and if I am understanding correctly. My insurance is not being helpful when I try to clarify with them.

    First at-fault accident - how much will my premiums increase?

    I reside in West Virginia, USA. Last month, I rear-ended a vehicle that stopped suddenly in front of me. It was a light-to-moderate hit. The vehicle I hit was pushed into the vehicle in front of them. I was found at fault but not issued any citations. The police report did note I was "following too closely". Everything was properly reported to insurance immediately. I am not claiming damage to my vehicle - the damage was minimal and my car is not worth much - plus my deductible is $1K, so I fixed the bumper cover myself. The other two vehicles sustained very minor damage - to my knowledge, small scratches on the bumpers, if that.

    This was my first at-fault collision in 15 years of driving. I did have another minor accident (I was rear-ended) a few years back, which was not my fault. How much can I expect my premiums to increase? Also, is there a way I can find out if/what damage my insurance ended up covering/paying for the other two vehicles involved? On the off-chance one of them claimed personal injury due to the collision, would I ever find out? I'd like to know, because that would likely impact my insurance rates. I asked my insurance agent about premium increases due to this collision, but have not been answered yet.

    Covered California stopped my coverage without notifying me and for no clear reason. Do I have any legal protection?

    I am on a family plan. From what I can tell, the only legal reasons that insurance can be canceled before the coverage period is for nonpayment or falsified application information, none of which apply to us. Covered California stopped my health insurance coverage on 09/30/2019 but did not notify me or my mom, the primary. I continued seeing my doctors as usual. I didn't realize until I received a call from my doctor's office that my insurance was no longer active and I was now responsible for over $1,000 in payments. My mom's plan was set to end on 10/30/2019 (also no notification). The other 3 members of the family are unaffected. Apparently, the Department of Social Services (or something) decided to evaluate us for Medical, so they canceled our coverage. They claim that they reinstated my plan starting on 11/01/2019, but I just called my doctor, who says my insurance is still inactive. Do I have any legal protection whatsoever regarding the payment/coverage of the month of October, when I did not know I wasn't covered? Or for now, when it is apparently not reinstated yet?

    Dental Insurance Won't Pay for Routine Cleaning [PA]

    Hello r/Insurance,

    Hoping to get some insight into logical next steps here. Long story short, my dental insurance from my old employer (Delta Dental of Kentucky) will not pick up the routine cleaning that I had done before I left the Company and I need some guidance on next steps. Here's a breakdown of the chronology:

    8/5/2019: I tender notice at my last job. My last day is to be 8/23/2019.

    8/19/2019: I get a routine cleaning from my dentist. My insurance covers routine cleanings in full and have never had an issue with this dentist before.

    8/23/2019: Official last day at my last Company; my insurance coverage ends at midnight that night (per my discussion with HR)

    September 2019: I get a call from the dentist's office where they noted my claim to my previous insurance provider was denied. They said they would try to work with them.

    11/4/2019: Receive a bill in the mail from the dentist's office with a balance due of $155.

    I should note that $155 isn't a huge bill and I'm won't be hurting to pay it, but it's the principle of the fact that I was paying dental insurance for this very reason to not have to make incremental payments for preventive care in addition to that.

    Bearing this in mind, what steps do I go through to either have the insurance company pay the bill or reimburse me for paying the bill?

    Advice on car being hit by object/car in Texas

    My car was hit by either a car or cart in a parking lot. The bumper is scratched and has a few chips. It's not terrible damage but it's a new car and I was hoping to keep it looking nice.

    I parked far away from the store to protect the car, so the cameras of the store did not capture anything. I filed a report with the store.

    The dealership I bought it from offered to try and buff it out and apply touch up paint.

    I spoke to my insurance. My collision deductible is $1000. My uninsured motorist coverage is $250. They couldn't tell me now which it would be covered under.

    The insurance company said I'll need an inspection, and they will have to stop the payment if I do not want to get it fixed. This obviously makes me nervous. I want the inspection to see how much I will have to pay out of pocket. They said if they inspect it a payment automatically goes out, but they can stop it.

    Has anyone else been in a similar situation? How should I proceed? Obviously I don't want my rates to raise, but if they can fix it and make it look like new again, that would be great.

    Maryland Health Exchange changed my plan and premium without notice

    I am sharing the information below to draw attention to the issue as well as to ask whether this should be reported to a higher agency. Note that Maryland does not use the federal health insurance marketplace site and has opted for their own notoriously buggy system called "Maryland Health Connection" (i.e. the Exchange).

    Yesterday I was notified of a bank charge in the amount of $2,658.68 from [health insurance company]. I spoke with a representative at [health insurance company] who explained the reason for the charge, acknowledged that it was a mistake, and said that [health insurance company] was unable to resolve the error without direction from the Exchange.

    It appears that an error has caused details of my 2018 enrollment to be crossed with my 2019 enrollment. In 2018 I had a Gold level plan that I shared with my now ex-husband. This year, he is no longer on my plan and I have reduced to a Bronze level plan with a much lower premium. Additionally, I do not receive an advance tax credit.

    According to [health insurance company], they were notified by the Exchange of a discrepancy in my premium amount. They were directed to charge me for the more expensive plan (that I cancelled last year) and to add my ex-husband back to my policy. Additionally, they were advised that I should have my advance tax credit revoked (a credit that I have not received yet was somehow forced to pay back). Without any notice, this resulted in an automatic charge for the 10 months of back premiums that it seemed I would owe for the additional coverage (that I had not signed up for nor received in 2019).

    I did not authorize this charge, which could easily have caused me financial damage by having it automatically drafted from my account without notice. Additionally, I am concerned about the privacy implications of having someone else's health information so casually linked to my own. I did not understand why I had started receiving my ex-husband's health information in the mail (addressed to me), until this issue was exposed.

    I have drafted a letter with the above details to send to the Exchange in hopes that they will undo whatever they have done. I have also opened a fraud dispute with my financial institution in hopes of recovering those funds sooner than later. Is there anything else I should do?

    [18 M] [UTAH] Losing insurance soon, and going to need some work done, what should I do?

    Hey everyone, just some background on me. I'm an 18 year old male who lives in Utah. I currently make about $10,000 a year working part-time while going to college. I live with my parents and I'm on Molina/Utah Urban Medicaid. I turn 19 later this month and subsequently am going to be losing my health insurance at the end of this month.

    I need to get my wisdom teeth taken out, but once I lose my insurance, it won't be covered by my current insurance if I get it again because I'm not considered a minor anymore.

    I'd also like to get braces at some point, and I understand that the insurance company won't cover any of that anyways. The problem is that my teeth and jaw are more screwed up then I thought. I'll have to get teeth pulled to make room and eventually jaw surgery to pull my bottom jaw forward.

    It really seems like the way healthcare in America works is actually against your well-being instead of for it.

    What are my options moving forward?

    Speed Awareness Course - Admiral

    So in the process of adding myself to the insurance of my parents car the question arose of "speed awareness courses".

    They insure their vehicles on a multi car policy through Admiral, who, as far as I am aware are the only UK insurer who demand an answer to the question "have you attended a speed awareness course in the past 3/5 years"

    Now I also insure myself on my own vehicle through Admiral, however when renewing my policy earlier this year, and in previous years, I have always used a comparison website, which do not ask this question, and during the follow up process through Admiral themselves the question was not asked prior to agreeing on the policy – as such I have at no point declared to Admiral that I have or have not attended a course.

    The truth of the matter is I have attended a course, however when trying to identify exactly when I did attend said course I was unable to find any way of doing so. Firstly I looked back through my emails, however I have recently purged them and have inadvertently deleted any correspondence I had with NDORS (the body that runs the courses here in the UK). I then tried looking at my driving license information through DVLA to see if it was recorded there, which it isn't. That led me on a merry search around the internet to see if it was recorded anywhere.

    During this search I came across this web page - http://the-zebra.com/police-speed-awareness-course-problems/ - where it states that the only place where this information is held is on the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) national database, which cannot under any circumstances be accessed by Insurance companies:

    "The police said they were prevented from sharing course attendance data with insurers precisely because those attending had not been convicted of a motoring offence. The police also denied profiting from speed awareness courses, but admitted they received £35 per person to cover their administration costs. A spokesperson for ACPO told The Zebra: "The NDORS courses are about providing education on driver awareness, they are not convictions. The courses are offered for low-level offences and in place of prosecution. This does not make the offender a convicted person and the police have no right to provide their name to insurance companies or anyone else. "There is no benefit in diverting a person from prosecution to improve their offending behaviour and then penalising them with insurance premium rises. Any subsequent speed offence is prosecuted and insurance companies are made aware by the DVLA."

    Further searching led me to this document by the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) - https://www.cii.co.uk/media/4048082/cii_new_generation_uw_group_-_speed_awareness_courses_-_the_implications_for_insurance.pdf - which goes on to state:

    "Unlike driver offence data, such as licence points and convictions, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) does not hold speed awareness course details so they are not accessible to insurers. This means that ACPO is, ultimately, the only organisation with access to this information"

    Thus confirming that there is no direct information path between the data held by the NDORS, and Insurance companies.

    This leads me on to the next problem. Because Admiral ask directly during their quote process whether you have attended a speed awareness course, you are obliged to inform them because by not telling them, or lying to them (about any information you provide) is in breach of your policy terms, and they could therefore justifiably cancel the policy, or decline an insurance claim.

    I have therefore come to the conclusion that because I am unable to find the details of the speed awareness course that I attended, and I see no way of them finding that information out, that if I was to just say that I can neither confirm nor deny whether or not I have attended one and that I would be lying if I said otherwise, they would have to accept that as an answer and provide insurance regardless hopefully without it having an affect on the premium I'm paying.

    Prior to posting this I looked at Admirals latest Insurance Guidelines - https://www.admiral.com/policyDocs/AD-003-023-Your-Car-Insurance-Guide.pdf - which came out last month, and interestingly there is no mention of the requirement to declare speed awareness courses upon renewal.

    I'm curious to know if anyone else has any thoughts on what I've laid out above, or if anyone has tried this tactic out before.

    Needing help searching for liability coverage in southeast MO

    I will be closing on approximately 50 acres in about 3 weeks. 90% of the land is timber, and the other 10% is yard with a house that will be torn down almost immediately after closing. As everyone knows, when activity starts on property, criminals tend to make their way on the site looking for tools, motor equipment, etc.

    What type of insurance do I need to shop for? The house will maybe be up for a week or 2 after closing, and after that it will just be 55 acres sitting free

    How does subrogation work when I never filed a claim with my motorcycle insurance? (Optum, UHC, Progressive)

    Hi, I was involved in a single-party crash on a motorcycle but never filed a claim with Progressive. As my bike was totaled and I couldn't ride, I (about a week later) canceled my Progressive motorcycle insurance.

    Now, UHC has hired Optum to look into who should pay for insurance. They've asked me for my "auto insurance" information twice now and I've referred them to Progressive with my old policy number.

    What happens now? Will I end up having to pay more money? Will Progressive honor the claim now that my insurance is canceled (as the crash happened prior to cancellation?) If Progressive doesn't honor the claim, am I liable to pay more money back to UHC?

    Is there a trick to get dental insurance to cover denied claims?

    I know this is a very small complaint but my dental insurance did not pay for my routine 6 month dental cleaning because it was a week shy of being exactly 6 months. Apparently theres a clause that it has to be 6 months and not one day sooner. The insurance rep that I spoke to on the phone said that this is approved by the "insurance commisioner" so there is absolutely no way to waive the charge or make an exception. Is this just made up b.s.? Is there a trick to get them to cover dumb things like this? It's not a big deal, just wondering if theres some magic phrase to get anywhere with them. Thanks!

    Open Enrollment/Special Enrollment question [Illinois]

    My husband and I have previously maintained separate health care plans because it made more sense financially. However, we had a baby this year, and decided to review our health plans to see if we should jump to a family plan during open enrollment. His employer's enrollment period just opened (Anthem Blue Cross plan - not sure what the options are. I think it's various PPO plans). Turns out my open enrollment is in July. I have a BCBS Blue Options Gold PPO 101 plan.

    My son is 6 months old, so to the best of my knowledge, we don't have a qualifying event to do special enrollment.

    My understanding is that, right now, we could drop my insurance and put all of us on his plan now, but we couldn't sign us all up for mine. Regardless of if we join his plan now, in July we could drop his plan and switch to mine during my open enrollment.

    Before we jump ship one way or the other, can someone tell me if I understand that correctly?

    I'm not currently looking for opinions on the specific plans as we need to look into what is provided and at what cost, but I'm happy to listen to suggestions related to that if you have them.
