Want to check out the effectiveness of your brand icon?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 03:29 AM PDT

Here is a simple test you can perform without leaving your office-- The Swap Test

Swap part of your icon--the name or the visual element-- with that of a competing brand, or even a brand from another category. If the resulting icon is better, or no worse than it was, your existing icon has room for improvement. By the same token, no other company should be able to improve its icon by using part of yours. A good brand icon is like a tailored suit--it should only look good on you.

A variation on the swap test is the hand test.

This quick and dirty proof lets you check the effectiveness of ads, brochures, web pages, and other brand communications. Take any piece of visual communication and cover up your trademark with your hand. Can you tell whose piece it is? If the communication in question looks as if it could have come from any other company or brand, then it is less than it could be. Because even without a trademark, those familiar with your brand should be able to tell who is talking just by its voice, or the look and feel of the materials.

Another version of “should I close?”

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 06:00 PM PDT

Phrased this way because I'd be willing to bet this is the most FAQ on this community, but I've looked through and of course no ones situation is the same.

A year and a half ago my fiancé and I bought the interior design/installation store we were both working for. It seemed like a great idea since we were so familiar with it. The existing owner had a hard time but she was a TERRIBLE money manager so we thought we could do better.

Fast forward. He almost never does any of the labor and as a result we're in more debt than I can find money for, since nearly all the money goes to pay labor. He can't give me an explanation for why he won't work. Many days he comes in and watches YouTube or plays internet checkers nearly all day. But he uses the company bank account for his nonessential spending.

I work my freaking tail off, have even learned to do some of the manual labor to try and help us out. I'm getting resentful and it's just plain unsustainable. I'm tired of not having any money and if I go back to my original field I can make plenty.

I'm worried if I tell him I'm out it will hurt our relationship, but idk how much longer I can do this. Literally any advice is so welcome, I'm completely stuck.

Temporarily Self-Employed and Not Sure How to Handle it?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 11:55 AM PDT

I couldn't find a good (active) sub Reddit for this question, and it's very timely - this sub Reddit makes the most sense, but I would certainly understand if it's not technically on-topic enough and is removed :)

TL;DR: Job offer starts as 30-day contract work and I need to know what to do regarding taxes and the ~640-800 gross I'll receive for it.

Here's the deal: I received a job offer yesterday, and it comes with a 30 day trial period. This period is done as contract work instead of employment at 10/hour for 4-5 days/week. It should be 640-800 gross, and if I remember right, the government starts caring at $600 for the year, right?

Expenses that will happen in this time: Daycare at probably 351, so the net will be 449 at most for that period.

I want to make my life come tax time as easy as possible. I don't need to work, so the money during this time isn't a big deal - I can probably increase my childcare expense some more if needed, for example, or find some other reasonable legal expenses. Or I can take that net 449 and just set it aside entirely because I have no idea what amount to take out of it, etc.

What thoughts do you wise folk have on how best to handle this situation from a tax perspective?

    Thank you!!!

New Graduate Looking to Take on Tech Work - $100 Website

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 09:57 PM PDT

I am a university student awaiting graduation this winter with a degree in computer science with a keen eye for design. I would like to explore and get my foot in the door in terms of working with clients and gaining exposure to commercial development. I would love to own my own business one day as computer science and technology is my passion. I know the best way to do that is to get myself out there (I'm usually on the quieter side and keep to myself) and build a portfolio or work for the big man and gain enough experience before doing that.

I am located in the states (Maryland) and willing to set up and create a static website for you starting at $100. Website that will require a high level of customization, we can discuss a price we can settle on. I also have experience in building websites with a shop using Woocommerce. I can also work on mobile apps, automation or custom software to help with your business. Let me know if I can be of assistance :)

If you offer in-house delivery, how do you pay your drivers?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 07:15 AM PDT

Background: we're the top ranked restaurant on two of the four third-party delivery apps available in our market. The sales volume is increasing our gross revenue by 50-100% daily against our in-store sales. With demonstrated success with our product and process to quickly process order fulfillment for the delivery sector and obvious demand, we're considering adding in-house delivery to pocket some of 30% commission savings. Our own online ordering platform is already capable of this function, so the technical side is ready it's just the employee side.

Therefore, my question is how have others who added this service or already offer it go about paying the drivers? I want something that will make it attractive for the good employees we have to want to take on this role for more hours with us. I've also personally driven for Doordash recently for about 100 drops so I could experience the driver-side role and understand the benefits and weaknesses of food delivery. Lowest cost option is not my concern as I prefer to pay higher wages to fewer quality staff than deal with the constant turmoil and self-manufactured crisis that defines the average pink-collar worker. The ideas I've floated in my head are as follows:

    • Low base hourly wage ($7.25) plus tips with a company car to drive? Purchasing a vehicle is not a concern as I already need a more spacious vehicle for our burgeoning Sam's Club needs. The insurance is, however, a concern with regards to allowing employees drive it which I have admittedly not yet checked on. Having a company car is the main benefit of this setup so I'm not willing to pay more wage on top of that major benefit no one else offers. If you do this, have you found the cost of the insurance is worth eliminating the run-of-the-mill transportation-related attendance excuses pink-collar workers come up with if I have to hire outside my current pool of good employees? I would obviously install exterior and interior view dashcams and a GPS location/speed tracker to monitor their driving for liability issues (texting and driving, drastically breaking speed limits, making sure they're not lounging around on a route, etc).
    • Standard wage ($9.25-10) plus tips without a company car? They use their own car in exchange for a higher wage and I just carry the extra general liability insurance to protect myself from anything that could come back on me from an accident during the course of their employment activities. In busy times, this comes out to my favor.
    • Low base hourly wage ($7.25) with a per-drop or subtotal commission without a company car? People are increasingly resistant to tipping anyway, so I could partially use the delivery fee to subsidize the driver pay so there's no uncertainty in pay. Most Doordash customers barely tip, and especially not the lunch orders or orders going to locations outside of university areas (yes, I'm aware of Doordash's supposed history with reporting tips - but in practice, that "problem" is blown way out of proportion by people who think corporations should lose money because they're "big business"). I already pay third-party apps 30% of my subtotals; I could pay a driver 5-10% or $2 of a delivery fee and still come out drastically better. And again, I'd up my general liability policy to ensure extra coverage. In slow times, this comes out to my favor.

These are just thoughts based on my experience with Doordash and dealing with employees already at my business, so I'm open to anyone else's experience! Or, is it just too much of a nightmare and I should leave it to the third-party apps?

growing the business model to adjacent markets, and larger markets?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 10:01 PM PDT

If I was to resell used motorcycle locally and ship them nation wide, strip damaged bikes for parts to sell online, and hire a mechanic to repair bikes to sell, to do installations and maintenance, how can I set my self up to become the 'bigger' player in the local and online scene? Is it mostly being consistent, having good products and being well recommended?

How can I also grow to add on and to create custom leather seats, custom metal/fiberglass/carbon fiber parts for bikes, then become possibly a manufacturer of a custom bikes(adding mods to existing bikes)?

    Offering Free Startup Coaching

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 09:05 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

As part of an upcoming venture, I'd like to offer free business consulting for any small businesses/startups who have a product but are looking to break down the foundations of their product offering and scale it into the future. I'm building a three month coaching curriculum and would love the opportunity to use real-life case studies and get feedback on refining my coaching.

    Ideally, your business should have:

    1. An existing product or service
    2. Rough numbers on your cost structure and revenue sources
    3. An idea about your ideal yearly revenue target within the next three years

With this information, I'll put together a baseline strategy report and give you some simple customer numbers to show if your business is on track to hit your targets (and if not, how you can refine it to achieve this!)

Next, we will prioritise your constraints and remove the waste to boost ROI. Finally, we look at growth experiments to see you succeed in the future.

So much more awaits but at this point, please comment or DM my account here and I'll put together some documentation to begin the validation of my own idea and help you see success in yours!

Looking for advice for my business and website.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 09:28 AM PDT

Hi Everyone I just Launched a new store, its been about 2 months now had some buyers, and a bit of site traffic, but very low conversion now and no sales. Would really appreciate some help and Feedback.

I have been running a lot of Fb and Ig adds to drive traffic to my site however I have began to notice that all the people that visit my site; 1 - spend under 20 seconds and 2 - only visit the home page and don't go past. The issue I'm having is that I believe the content on my site is really good quality as well as I have been partnering with influencer to get the word out which can be seen on my Ig page however I still have not seen an increase in traffic or engagement.

All frames are designed by me and my partner, we have also professionally shot all the product photos to ensure the site looks professional however there is definitely something im missing as its not converting customer or even getting customer to view the product page.

Would really appreciate any help and ideas.

    Regards

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 02:51 PM PDT

I'm taking over a small grocery store (first business) and they have no cash register or inventory system set up. What are my options in terms a system that I can put my products into, and it automatically updates when someone buy's anything? It would be awesome if it had a cash register system built in or I could integrate them together.

New Vendor I Purchased From Didn't Send Full Order - What Are My Options?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 01:44 PM PDT

I purchased a wholesale order from a vendor, but they only sent me half the inventory I purchased from them. They won't respond to my calls/emails asking them to send the other half. I called my bank to dispute the charges and they said they can't dispute them on my behalf. I made a small order to test them out, and it was fine, but when I placed the large order, they screwed me.

What other options do I have? It was a lot of money that I am now out of and I feel as though they are most likely doing this to other people. They are located in the state of Pennsylvania and I am located in Ohio if that helps. Any advice is appreciated!

I'm not certain if any aspect of it is patentable but I do know that one design feature was previously patented but the patent is expired and the previous patent owner failed to capitalize on the patent. I know that I need to find some way to prototype and manufacture but am really not sure of first steps. any guidance is appreciated.
