Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:11 AM PDT If I want to buy a brand new 2019 model truck, when is the best time? Would it be right after the 2020 models come out, or would it be a month later? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 08:16 AM PDT I know I know.. this is probably a dumb question... 😬but I'm trying to grasp how compounding interest works.. Let's say I hold these accounts for 10 years. Do I come out ahead if I just have one account with all 10k rather than split between two accounts? Or, does it make no difference? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:25 PM PDT I have a Roth IRA and a Roth 401k. I was maxing an HSA as my pretax account, but when I switch to my wife's insurance (saves me 64/month, I will re-route contributions to 401k), I won't have that anymore. Should I be concerned about not having a pre-tax account? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:29 PM PDT The mom I babysit for has suggested I get venmo so she can pay me easier, but I'm not totally comfortable with that. I have a debit card I could put on the account, but I haven't done any research on wether it's safe or not [link] [comments] |
My first commission check is 26k. What should I do now? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:56 PM PDT As the clock strikes midnight today I'll receive the largest check I've ever seen. It's been a long time coming and I've been slowly fixing my finance with this huge check it looks like I might be able to take care of most of my debt . Not sure if my commission checks will ever be this big again. (New hires have 3 months probation on the 4th month you receive your percentage of all the deals you close. Then from there on its monthly) I'm trying to build wealth. Any suggestion in what I should and shouldn't invest in? [link] [comments] |

Still a bit confused between Roth and Traditional Posted: 03 Oct 2019 05:52 PM PDT So I'm still a bit confused about how Traditional and Roth work and which I should be contributing to. I'm currently contributing to Roth, but according to my math it's not "post-tax". The amount taken out of my paycheck towards my Roth account is the % of my paycheck before taxes. I'm also not sure what the strategy would be in switching between the two. Open to advice. Some info about me: Federal employee, so I have a TSP account. 26 years old, have been working for 3 years I'm in the 22% tax bracket, will be in the 24% salary range within 2 years and will likely stay there till retirement [link] [comments] |
20yo College Student, $6500+ CC debt, hours being cut from min. wage job. Posted: 03 Oct 2019 05:50 AM PDT Due to some stupid financial decisions, I am currently in debt about $6500 through my credit cards, I am currently negative in my chequing account by $100. Income: - $14 per hour, used to average around $800/biweekly but now averaging around $500/biweekly. - $200 monthly grant. Expenses: - $800 for monthly bills, (car payment fml, car insurance fml, phone bill) - $100 overdraft in chequing account. - $5,200 CC #1 debt (minimum payment this statement has to be $550... FML) - $1,400 CC #2 debt. Took me a lot of courage but I finally realized enough is enough when I couldn't even buy my own food. I really need help paying this off. To some $6500 may not seem like a lot but to me as a broke college student (working with a minimum wage job + hours being cut) and with midterms coming up, assignments, arguments between my GF and I, I feel like I am getting to my breaking point. Just reading this post over is making me tear up and feel broken inside. Please feel free to chime in and give your opinions/advice on what to do. Kind Regards, Throwaway101Account edit: Should have included that car is being paid and is a lease for about 2 more years. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 09:29 AM PDT Hello fellow redditors! Im in a bit of a slump right now. I was unexpectedly laid off back in May due to the company eliminating a number of positions for financial reasons. I was given a two month severance and in addition the use of EI, so roughly 10 months of paid time. I foolishly took 2 months off at the start (hindsight, blah blah) to just focus on my mental health since I wasnt doing too well. So now flash forward - I have been on the hunt for 3 months now and havent even landed an interview. To be fair, I have been contacted back for some positions but they are too low on my salary expectation that I didnt want to lower my expectations quite that early. I have roughly 5 months left of payments coming in and I am really starting to feel the noose tighten around my neck, so to speak. I'm fully prepared to take a lower paying job if I am still stuck around the 1 month mark - but I am losing hope. Having no hope is the true downer in all this. Not to mention, my motivation is takin a big 'ol beating due to the depression of just living this whole process. I could really use some kind words/advice/jokes/whatever, especially from those who have been right here with me before (or now!). How did/do you cope? How long did it take before you found a job? Was it one you wanted or had to take? Whats your favourite recipe? Sincerely, [link] [comments] |
Negative balance on a prepaid debit card, what to do? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 03:09 PM PDT I received a prepaid debit card (mastercard) as a gift and it had $100. I spent most of the money until there was $30 remaining. I ended up buying something but due to shipping problems, they refunded me so I thought I was all good. A day later, I decided to empty my card by spending the remaining amount. However, apparently the shipping got fixed for the original item I bought and the item was sent out and I got charged again. Now I have a balance of -$5 .The card isn't in my name but it was sent as a gift to my house so it has my address. I'm not sure what I should do? [link] [comments] |
First Retirement Plan Help (19 Years Old) Posted: 03 Oct 2019 08:03 PM PDT Hello! I landed my first full-time job 2 months ago that pays a salary of $34,000 a year. ($16.50 an hour) I am very new to personal finance and would like to save up for retirement as soon as possible. I have 0 debt and ~ 4K in emergency funds. In my job benefits I am able to open a retirement savings plan that allows me to put a % of my pay period/salary to my retirement. At 19-20 years old, what is the recommended percentage when initiating a retirement plan? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:58 PM PDT Currently a college sophomore pursuing a finance degree and will be able to get an internship in my junior/senior year. The majority of my student loans are subsidized which means interest doesn't accrue until 6 months after graduation (2022). My total student loan debt is 5k, all of which is subsidized. So I don't plan on paying my loans until after graduation where I will make a lump sum payment. I get some loans each semester that are unsubsidized that gain interest but pay those off right away since usually these are only around $500. Currently living at home and will do so until I finish college. I work part time and pull in about $1000/month give or take a little. My only monthly expenses are a gym membership of 65$, gas $80, and about $250 food. Investments: I have $25 worth of stocks in Robinhood but looking to open a "real" investment account like Vanguard, Schwab, or Fidelity [link] [comments] |
Can you use the healthcare tax credit if your employer offers healthcare? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:54 PM PDT My husband and I are looking at our insurance options for 2020. We were looking at the healthcare.gov website and our collective income qualifies us for a tax credit that would bring our healthcare to a reasonable price that we could afford and it would offer decent coverage for both us (whereas private coverage for us both is almost unaffordable). I'm not offered any healthcare through my employer, so I'm in the clear to do it. The only issue is the question they ask on the site regarding my husband being offered insurance through his employer (we don't qualify for Medicaid/chip/etc. so none of that is relevant), but if we mark yes for that question then it seems we can't get any credit for him. However, the insurance offered by his employer does not meet the ACA minimum requirements, is not reasonably priced (it's actually far more expensive than both of us going on private insurance, which is still unaffordable), and won't allow coverage for dependents/spouses. Does this count then as being offered employer insurance? [link] [comments] |
I kind of don't understand how people keep up with money. Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:52 PM PDT Is it bad that I don't know how much money I have right now? I have a general idea, but I don't know the exact number. I know that I have money in different places. I have maybe 5 or 600 bucks saved up at my house. But, it is constantly depleting due to needing to keep cash on hand for transactions (gas, food, etc). There's about 100 or so bucks in PayPal that I haven't used yet. Then, I have 3,000 dollars across a savings and a checking acount. I'm 21 and in college right now, and it seems like everyone around me knows more about using money than I do. I am good at saving money, I only spend if I feel absolutely justified in doing so. But, managing my money eludes me. I'm afraid that with gas expenses, car insurance, and eventual car repairs, that I am going to be bled dry and have to take out loans, which I desperately do not want to do. Also, I don't know how to divide up my money into different areas. I want to have part of my money untouchable as savings, part of my money be for buying things I want (I'm looking at you Nintendo Switch), and part for school expenses. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I'd greatly appreciate it. Because I have no flippin idea how to be in control of my money. [link] [comments] |
I'm too frugal, how do I become OK with spending money? Posted: 03 Oct 2019 01:05 PM PDT I guess I'm kinda trying to speedrun retirement, but I've realized that I'm probably spending averse to an unhealthy degree. To give you an idea of my situation. I'm 26, my income is pretty good and I have next to no expenses, nor debt. Something like 80-90% of my income is invested while I spend the remaining money on cheap food and bills. I have a fairly long commute, yet drive a 16 year old Ford Focus to save on insurance and depreciation. At this point I could live off of my savings for many years. I've been considering getting some fun stuff lately, like computer components or a vacation, but I've realized that I feel very uncomfortable spending money on things that aren't absolutely essential. Feels like it's been years since I made a "stupid" purchase. Many people would probably love to be in my position, and I am aware of how good I have it, but this problem of mine is a real one nonetheless. Does anyone have any advice? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Oct 2019 04:45 PM PDT Hello all I am looking for a Visa or MasterCard with a super small limit, from a reasonably well known issuer. Nothing predatory, none of those OpenSky type ones where they charge you $50 per year. Capital One's looked great since I could pay $49 $99 or $200 for a $200 credit limit, which is all I need. I just want the card around to be able to make a few purchases on my own when the stores don't take Discover, and have a basic card that helps boost my AAOA in the long run. No annual fee, no bullshit fees basically, just a basic level Visa/MC. I don't use debit cards for personal reasons. Financial situation is basically no income (500 per year) and around 3.5k in the bank. Quite honestly I'm unsure why I'm getting denied from this secured card, Discover's been reporting for a few months and I'm not applying to anything with a major limit, not even another $500 limit card. Can anyone possibly tell me why or put me in touch with a working Capital One recon line? [link] [comments] |

Unsure of how to be saving for retirement and working with Fidelity Posted: 03 Oct 2019 08:35 PM PDT I've recently gotten interested in saving up money for retirement. I'm 21, currently live with my parents, work part time, and don't really pay for/ buy much thus have around $15k in my bank account. Through Fidelity I set my pre-tax to 15% and roth to 34% and my employer matches up to 6%. I was reading that I should do 401(k) up to employer match, max Roth, and then go to 401(k). Am I doing this right? I plan on moving out sometime next year which is why I have been saving quite a bit. I don't really need the money I get from my part time which is why I thought of maxing my contributions since I don't have any financial responsibilities. I was going to change the contributions when I moved out and had bills to pay but would like to smooth out the transition. If yall have any advice for me it would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Wife's boss received a call from a company called "Mortgage Compliance Advisory" Posted: 03 Oct 2019 07:57 AM PDT Sorry if this isn't the right sub, but this is clearly a scam so i wanted to ask for some advice. The call came to her boss' personal cell phone, not the public company number. They said they needed to verify my wife's employment for her mortgage, and gave her an "Order number" to reference. We recently (June) purchased a home so I guess it's possibly related, but i can't find any information about the company or phone number on google. I told her to call experian and have her credit frozen, and so far there are no new credit inquiries on her report. Are there any other steps we should take? Thank you all so much for your time! Posted: 03 Oct 2019 12:09 PM PDT They say they are affiliated with Discover, Visa, Mastercard, and Amex. The man on the phone says this offer is being extended to me for paying on time for 6 months straight. Never heard of anything like this before. Should I be skeptical? I asked him to call me back tomorrow. [link] [comments] |
Trading in my car with a title loan on it Posted: 03 Oct 2019 08:18 PM PDT Trading in a car with a title loan Question??? I have a car I am wanting to trade in. It has a loan where I used my car as collateral even though it still is financed through a primary lender. It is not showing with the DMV that there is a secondary Lien in the vehicle. Why does that mean? Do I need to tell them about the Title Loan or will they know when they get the records for the VIN? I don't want to be deceiving but it's not showing at the DMV. (New post last one was flagged) [link] [comments] |
