If your question is "I have $10,000, what do I do?" or other "advice for my personal situation" questions. If you are going to ask how to invest you should include relevant information, such as the following:

    • What are your objectives with this money? (buy a house? Retirement savings?)
    • What is your risk tolerance? (Do you mind risking it at blackjack or do you need to know its 100% safe?)
    • What are you current holdings? (Do you already have exposure to specific funds and sectors?)
    • Any other assets? House paid off? Cars? Expensive significant other?
    • What is your time horizon? Do you need this money next month? Next 20yrs?

TD Ameritrade follows suit with Charles Schwab, cutting commission to 0 starting October 3rd

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 05:42 PM PDT

After the recent Charles Schwab announcement, TD Ameritrade released this announcement shortly after:

    https://www.amtd.com/news-and-stories/press-releases/press-release-details/2019/The-Best-Just-Got-Better-TD-Ameritrade-Introduces-0-Commissions-for-Online-Stock-ETF-and-Option-Trades/default.aspx

There will still be a $0.65 fee per contract on options however. Quite interesting that this came out of the blue. It could be a push to drive Robinhood out of the market, as Online Brokerages aren't as dependent on Commission as their main source of revenue anymore. However, I believe that this will have positive long-term effects on all online brokerages. What are your thoughts on this news?

How likely is it that FB will actually be broken up?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 04:35 AM PDT

It looks like that's the line a lot of the Democratic candidates are going with right now and the more I think about it, the less sense it makes to me.

Facebook basically owns three apps/websites: Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp. While these three are dominant in the social media space, it's not like they're the only options. You still have Twitter, Snapchat, Reddit etc who do pretty decent numbers and it's not like having a Facebook or IG page prohibits you from having those other social media accounts. So right there I don't see how Facebook is stifling competition.

The argument I've heard is that FB needs to be broken up because something like 80% of all online marketing dollars go to either them or Google. I was hoping someone could expand more on this and why that would fall under the purview of antitrust. The way I see it, Facebook isn't buying out competitors or using shady practices to make sure no other businesses are viable, it's just that they're the best at what they do so marketers naturally go to them. The only time that they bought a competitor outright is with Instagram and I'd argue that a lot of why IG is even profitable is because of what FB did with it after acquisition.

It seems to me that what people like Elizabeth Warren really want to hit FB on is their carelessness with data, which I think is fair. But they're going this antitrust route which seems misguided. If she wants to position herself as a trust buster, Google or even Disney would be much better posterboys for that. Targeting Facebook makes no sense.

Baltimore County says Monsanto (now Bayer) contaminated its water. A lawsuit could make the company pay for cleanup.

Baltimore County will try to go after Bayer to cover clean up costs.

More and more it seems like Bayer paid for a liability rather than an asset.

Will E*Trade Be Next To Offer 0% Commission Trades ??

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:02 AM PDT

    Hi,

Now that Schwab & Ameritrade are both offering 0% stock trading commissions, does that mean other broker's will follow suit ? I'm not a financial guru, but I'm smart enough to know they will make up for their lose's somewhere. I recently opened a rollover IRA account with e*trade, as I already had a stock plan with them from my former employer. Now I'm beginning to wonder if I did the correct thing ? I should have taken investing a lot more serious than I did before I retired in late december of last year.

ISM Manufacturing PMI falls to lowest level since the financial crisis

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:12 AM PDT

ISM manufacturing PMI printed 47.8 this morning coming way lower than estimates. Are we pretending like it's nothing to see or is it a sign of larger issues at hand?

Schwab drops fees, TDA drops fees. Where to invest now?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 04:55 PM PDT

With the news circulating around about them dropping fees/commissions, and the impending possibility that others such as fidelity and E-Trade may follow suit....what are you fellow redditors thinking may be the best option now? Not just for an individual brokerage account, but even for say a Roth IRA?

have been on the fence about switching my brokerage account away from Chase, and starting a Roth IRA somewhere also. But now the tables are turning and it's overwhelming!

are you detached from the total value of your combined portfolios?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 12:27 PM PDT

I have my money in a bank that makes it hard for me to take out money easily and I've had them like that for 3-4-5 years (in stocks). Sometimes I sit and watch the total value and what those figures would represent irl, like a vacation or buying a car or something or how much that figure could be to someone else or little to someone else. I dont think like that often, most of the times when I see the total value figure it's just a figure to me but then i have days like today when I just sit and watch the number and think about it.

do you ever have days like that too? what do you think about? do you have any goals with your money?

Investment Advice for a 20yr old

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 09:37 PM PDT

My youngest cousin just asked me for some financial advice. Her details are as follows:

    -Full-time student

    -20 years of age

-Works a few hours as a tutor and makes about a $100 a month.

    -Has $20K in the bank.

-Has no experience with stocks or trading.

-Wants to do something very passive.

-Lives with parents and has no expenses other than a random coffee once or twice a month.

    -Has very high risk tolerance

I need advice and recommendations from you guys.

Edit: She wants to keep it out of an IRA and keep it available to cash-out. She plans on moving to Central America or a place where dollar goes further than here, after she's accumulated enough. That's at least 8 years into the future.

Charles Schwab vs Interactive Broker IBKR Lite

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 08:36 AM PDT

With the announcement of IBKR Lite going live sometime between now and Halloween and Schwab going commission-free on 7 October, which one should I switch to?

I imagine Schwab will be more user-friendly but I wonder if IBKR Lite will work with the VectorVest app like regular IBKR does.

I replicated the Apple 10-K Income Summary in Excel

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 12:02 PM PDT

I've built an Add-in to retrieve live market data into Excel.

I thought it would be a good exercise to see if I could replicate the Income Summary page in the 2018 10-K form that Apple submits to the SEC, just using formulas from the Add-in (no hard-coded numbers).

    I wrote about it here:

    https://www.excelpricefeed.com/templates/excel-company-income-summary-10k-template

(disclaimer: I built this Add-in and thought it is would be useful for this audience).
