Being charged $24,000 in state tax fees for $0 sales for my Etsy store

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:12 PM PDT

Not sure where to ask this and please excuse my ignorance too as I'm learning as I go. I opened an Etsy store selling t-shirts, posters and stickers of my art and designs. I opened my Etsy store in May last year and didn't make any sales until November. Then I registered my business as an LLC with the state gov tax system reporting that my business was opened since May. I thought I was being compliant but I guess I was an idiot because I was hit with delinquent tax fees totalling $24,000 for $0 sales for my state from May 2018 to Nov 2018 because I failed to file for the 0 sales "on time" because I was supposed to report my sales tax every month. I reached out to my accountant and offered to pay for consultation, and she did not answer any of my my emails or phone calls.

Since then, I've appealed for abatement twice for them to send back arbitrary adjustments to the fees which now total $400. I have a net profit of $1000 for over a year of operation and can barely afford the fees to the state gov. I also sent in appeals to file semi annually instead of monthly. But I was hit with another letter notifying me of my delinquency for use tax because I failed to file for July this year despite my appeal letter for semi annual filing.

Is it worth fighting the fees anymore? Wondering if I'm even doing anything right by being compliant with the state gov. I've been stuck in paperwork purgatory going on for 9 months with hours of phone calls, research, letters etc taking up ridiculous amounts of time that I could've spent working on the store. And all my efforts to deal with these penalties seem to be going nowhere. I made my small business hoping I could make a little extra money from my hobby but I've been feeling like a dumb, hopeless monkey since it's becoming a money and time sink only due to this fiasco I'm having with the state gov. Trying my best to see it as a learning situation but I'm dreading another other unforseen consequence to come up like another $3000 bill for failing to file July's use tax on time.

Wondering if anyone has experience with something like this, or input on what I should do or who I should consult with? Do I pay my idiot tax and move on?

    Edit: located in Ohio

For Everyone Doing Instagram Marketing, These Are Methods That Worked For Us To Remove Action Blocks On Instagram

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:44 AM PDT

As I've promised, I've transcribed my YT video about methods to fix the action block on Instagram, and I'm going to post it here, for those of you who like to learn by reading instead of watching.

For those of you who like to learn by watching and listening here is the link to my YouTube video: https://youtu.be/f_05rDTmvvw

If you like to learn by reading (or you just don't like my bad English in the video) then continue reading.

This is part two of my previous video/ post where I've explained what triggers action blocks on Instagram, and what should you do to completely avoid them. In that video/ post I've mentioned that there are 3 different types of action blocks now depending on the type of action block you've received you will know if you are going to be able to fix it using some of the methods I'm going to mention later or you have to just wait it out.

Before I go over different types of action blocks I want to mention that Instagram's AI started to go pretty crazy with these blocks recently, probably because they are still tweaking settings, and pretty often they are falsely flagging users and blocking their actions without a real reason. If you are just a regular user, and you absolutely did nothing wrong, make sure to report a problem to Instagram, and your action block is going to be fixed most of the times. If you've tried that already or you think you did something wrong than continue reading.

    Different types of action blocks:

    1. Temporary action block: This one is usually the most common and expires pretty fast from several hours to 24h. Methods I'm going to mention later work pretty well with this type of action block.
    2. Action block with an expiration date: this one has the time stamp saying when exactly it's going to expire. Methods I'm going to mention later usually have pretty low success rate with this type of action blocks and your best bet is to wait it out. Sometimes however it can be fixed, but in general, it's pretty rare.
    3. Action block without an expiration date: This one is usually the worst, since it doesn't have an expiration date and can last from several hours to two weeks. Some of the fixing methods usually work with this one, which is great since if you just wait it out you can lose up to two weeks. Now since I've covered that and you know your chances of getting the action block lifted, let's go over different methods you should try to fix the action block.

    Method #1

I've already mentioned this, but I want to mention it again since when we were testing we had the most success with it. Send a request to IG to manually review your account once the action block msg pops up. You should absolutely do this, even if you are doing follow unfollow or spamming with comments or likes. As I've mentioned Instagram is fighting with bots and when you request a manual review or report a problem, it will definitely let Instagram know that you are not a bot. With this method, we got unblock success rate of almost 50% and we did spam with actions, so it definitely works. Sometimes, you won't get the option to request a manual review on the action block msg, but you can go to settings>Help>Report a problem and explain that you can't like or follow and you don't know why because you did nothing wrong.

    Method #2

I've already mentioned that you should use Instagram manually and stop with automation if you haven't already delete all 3rd party apps and tools and change your IG password. This can lift your action block and definitely help avoid another in the future.

Pro Tip: Turn on Two-factor authentification, this will let Instagram know that you are probably not using 3rd party bots and tools, and it will increase your trust and health score + it can lift the action block immediately.

    Method #3

Rewrite your BIO and remove link from your BIO if you have one this worked for one of my friends recently, it's easy and there's no reason not to try it. In the previous video, I've mentioned that a link in BIO increases your chances to get the action block.

    Method #4

Delete Instagram App and install it again (This should delete the cookies and other things that Instagram is capturing. We had some success lifting temporary action blocks with this one and I've also seen people of forums mentioning that it worked for them. Pretty easy to do and there's no reason not to try it.

    Method #5

Switch to 4g, as I've already mentioned we've noticed that it's easier to get action blocked while using your home IP than 4G mobile internet, and if that's the reason you got the action block this should fix it.

    Method #6

You can go one step further and switch the device you are using and try to log in on some other phone or tablet, sometimes even logging on PC helps. We had a high success rate of fixing action blocks without an expiration date and temporary blocks with this one.

    Method #7

Link your Instagram account to a facebook page and if that doesn't help switch from personal to business or creator and vice-versa. As I've mentioned we have noticed that IG accounts which have been linked to a facebook page seem to have higher action limit, business accounts have even higher limit and finally creator accounts seem to have the highest limit so if this doesn't help remove action block immediately, it can definitely help to prevent another action block once you get unblocked.

    Method #8

If you have some money, promote one of your posts, this has lifted action blocks for us in several cases, and I've also mentioned in the previous video that accounts who spend some money on ads have higher action limits which should also help you avoid another action block in the future. If none of these methods work for you then unfortunately you will have to wait it out. As I've mentioned sometimes action block message comes with the expiration date and sometimes it doesn't. Action blocks usually last from 12 to 48 hours, but sometimes they can last for up to two weeks. If that's the case and you don't want to wait that long, you can start working on another account while you're waiting to get unblocked. Don't forget to check my previous video on how to avoid action blocks: https://youtu.be/89vuQbrfLao If you like to read instead of watching, you can find my previous post here on this sub or check my blog post: What Triggers The Action Block And How To Avoid It and if you have another device I would advise you to start the new account on that device using mobile data. Right now, unfortunately, there's nothing else you can do, but since I've seen a lot of people complaining about action blocks on their personal accounts where they actually have done nothing wrong, I'm sure IG will take it a bit easier in the future, because they are really starting to get their users angry.

As I've mentioned in my video, follow-unfollow method if done right still works, even better now, since a lot of people that were botting stopped with IG marketing completely, and people are getting much fewer notifications and follow spam. For Instagram marketers who are doing things correctly, these action blocks are really a good thing, and IMO we will be able to grow even faster now.

These blocks are only bad for regular users, who actually did nothing wrong, but as I've mentioned, I'm sure IG is tweaking their criteria and soon, there will be much fewer instances of false flagging and action blocks for regular users.

I hope you liked this post and that it will help you remove the action block from your IG account.

I really hope you don't mind that I've put some links to my video since I know there are people who like to by watching/ listening more than by reading. I also want to mention that if I find out about some other methods that are working to remove the action block, I will update the article about action block fixes on my blog.

These methods combined yielded 87% success rate for us, and since all of these methods are easy and fast to do, I suggest you try all of them.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I'm going to answer as soon as I can.

I have a good business idea but don’t know where to start!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 08:20 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I'm a NICU nurse and have no knowledge of the business world. I watch shark tank and dragons den if that counts?

This year I came up with a good product for cleaning purposes. I really need help on where to start with my idea. At this very moment it's just a thought. I have sort of created a business plan, and included why I want to start this business, what the product will look like, and how it would be different than others. I have done some research and I can't seem to find my idea on the market in except one place in the UK.

I am really passionate about this and need help creating my vision. Are there any books I can read or is there something I should do first??

    Thanks

Two weird questions about Google My Business (GMB).

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 06:09 PM PDT

For those with a service business and use Google My Business (GMB).

Do you use Google Reserve (https://www.google.com/maps/reserve/) for your bookings and if yes, have you noticed an increase in the number of scheduled calls?

Second, did your Google Map rankings go up when you added Google Reserve?

Starting a small business with little to no money ‍♀️

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 06:42 AM PDT

Hello! So I'll try to keep this short because I just need some advice. I am a welder and Blacksmith, really just an all around maker. I've noticed that the makers spaces in my vicinity (Denver, CO) do not have very good resources for metal working;not unless I want to drive an hour to the makers space that does. I would like to start my own makers space/ art cooperative near downtown Denver! So I've recently been looking into mixed space warehouses/listings, because the most financial viable way to do this is if I could live on the property i work out of. But the loans for these types of properties are not house loans and will require a lot of money down, more than I have and will have for decades. My question and the advice I am asking is how can i finance this, what bank would you suggest, where can I find investors, is it smart to ask parents to invest? Also any other advice you can give. Thanks so much from a future HBIC 😁

    UK Business Reaching VAT Threshold

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:16 AM PDT

Hi, trying to help out a friend.

Their business is very close to, if not has already reached, the VAT threshold of £85k on taxable income. It is a business where the employees charge an hourly rate.

My question is, how can they make this transition without having a hugely negative impact on their profits? I understand they can do the following

    • Reclaim VAT on goods purchased in the last 4 years
    • Reclaim VAT on services purchased in the last 6 months.
    • Reclaim the difference between their input and output VAT tax.

Now I think it is very unlikely that their input tax will come close to their output tax. So its then about mimising the impact of this extra cost.

The obvious one is to raise their hourly prices. The problem with this is they then out price themselves in the local area just to cater for VAT.

They also can't split their business as there isn't a clean divide in services offered and it would probably be classed as avoidance.

What are the options here or is it just bad news all round?

    Cheers

The 7 criteria for a good name for your business

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 03:07 AM PDT

The 7 criteria for a good name are:

    1. Distinctiveness: Does it stand out from the crowd, especially from other names in its class? Does it separate well from ordinary text and speech? The best brand names have the "presence" of a proper noun.
    2. Brevity: Is it short enough to be easily recalled and used? Will it resist being reduced to a nickname? Long multi-word names will be quickly shortened to non-communicating initials.
    3. Appropriateness: Is there a reasonable fit with the business purpose of the entity? If it would work just as well--or better-- for another entity, keep looking.
    4. Easy Spelling and pronunciation: Will most people be able to spell the name after hearing it spoken? Will they be able to pronounce it after seeing it written? A name shouldn't turn into a spelling test or make people feel ignorant.
    5. Likability: Will people enjoy using it? Names that are intellectually stimulating, or provide a good "mouth feel", have a headstart over those that don't.
    6. Extendibility: Does it have "legs"? Does it suggest a visual interpretation or lend itself to a number of creative executions? Great names provide endless opportunities for brand play.
    7. Protectibility: Can it be trademarked? Is it available for web use? While many names can be trademarked, some names are more defensible than others, making them safer and more valuable in the long run.

In general how do I gain experience in running a business?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 08:42 PM PDT

I would like to get hands on biz operations before I start my own biz which would include both services and products. It would be focused on spirituality and similar things. I thought working at a store like Target would help but I'm not sure. My biz would have an online shop. Thanks for any input.

Small business owner and family life - help

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:49 PM PDT

Hi all, sorry if this isn't the place to post but I feel that this community will understand.

My husband runs a business. We are coming up to 4 years of operation. All is well, 1 staff member, good reputation, repeat customers and money seems good (though I can't say for certain as I don't quite understand everything)

My problem is this: i feel that this is starting to ruin our lives. We do not live anymore and my husbands constant moods are making everything worse. I need help.

We are in our mid 20s and own our own home about 1 minute from the business.

I do everything at home: cooking, cleaning, shopping, laundry, mowing. My husband doesn't have to lift a finger once he returns from work. In fact, on nights he works late I cook dinner and deliver it to him on most of those occasions.

My husband works 24/7. I can't remember his last full day off. I think it was back in early August. He is rarely home before 7.30 in the evening. Even on weekends. He will work often until midnight or even later. He says he is busy and has to work. I get no more information then that. I have seen the books, we are not so destitute that he has to kill himself and our lives to make ends meet. I can't force him to take a day off because he loses it at me and argues.

There are 3 problems: 1. We have no life together. Nothing. I barely see him anymore. When I go to the business to bring him dinner or to see him I can't speak to him because I get snapped at and told he is "too busy" I can't remember the last time we even went and got a coffee on the weekend. Or went for a walk. Or a quick dinner at the pub. We never leave our house. He is too tired. He is too stressed. The resentment is building and i feel like our marriage will end because there is nothing there!! No effort, no hug or kiss. It's work and that's it.

    1. His attitude and way of treating people close to him is disgusting and humiliating. He wasn't like this 5 years ago. He was kind, caring, loving and interested in people close to him. Now, if I say the wrong thing I am snapped at, if I speak when he is "busy" (I am not a mind reader) he snaps. 9/10 times I want to speak of do something he is "busy". It's embarrassing to be spoken to like that by my husband. Especially in front of people. It's worse when his mother tries to speak to him.

    2. I am always being told I don't do enough. As I said above, I do literally everything at home. He doesn't even put a bowl in the dishwasher. I work full time with often extra hours and a min 2 hour daily commute, i study, I help him on the weekends. I delivered him and his employee dinner the other night as they were working well past dinner time. I didn't get a thank you or a kiss on the cheek. I gently said "hey, a thank you wouldn't go astray" and his reply was "I'm the one here working" It really, really hurt. As soon as I drop the ball on something he pulls me up and makes me feel like total shit. I have a sport I take part in once a week. Normally I fit it in around my Saturday work at My husbands business. He loves to rub it in my face that he never gets to have fun and I go off and do my sport. My sport is everything to me. I have done it since I could walk and my life truly does feel empty without it. I am playing the spirt for 1 hour each week.

It's basically like in his eyes, I do nothing. But my job pays for our home and all our personal expenses and I still have a little left over that I put away for savings. He always tells me he is working for our future but in all honesty, I can't see how he is helping our future anymore. He does not draw and income from the business. Everything financial for our personal lives falls on me. Extra money in the business goes on the business loan so I'm not complaining about that.

I don't know. I'm just lost and scared.

Google Website Builder VS Other Website Building Sites

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:21 PM PDT

TL;DR - Is it better to just use the Google Website Builder and have your small business website be connected to Google or choose a different builder?

Hi r/smallbusiness. My boss (fairly recently) opened a gift shop (owns a restaurant with a similar name, which is incredibly successful) and I started working there in early September.

She has left me in charge of our social media, as I'm the only one fluent in English and she trusts me (we have known each other since 2011). This means I run our Instagram, Facebook and Google Business Page, mainly. We also have an Etsy page to sell the handmade items we make AND our very own website.

Recently she asked me to look into getting more traffic to our website. We use Jimdo Creator to host our website. I personally am not a fan of it all that much because I find that it lacks a lot of things.

Would the Google Website Builder be a better idea, especially because it is connected to Google? I don't know what to do and really want to help my boss/friend get more customers. I do intend to look into some paid advertisements on Google for our website.

Sorry for such a long winded question and thanks in advance!

Do you use surveys to validate your business ideas?

    Posted: 02 Oct 2019 12:32 AM PDT

I have built a free survey tool that is privacy-focused which keeps your ideas safe. https://blocksurvey.org.

Do you know all the data collected by existing surveys, poll and forms tools are stored in plain text?

Through Blocksurvey, all the data is encrypted and only you can see it. You own the data.

Do you think this tool will help you? If yes/no, can you share your thoughts? It will help me to evaluate, if this tool is needed.

need to get out of partnership

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 06:24 PM PDT

i'm done working with my abusive ex-husband. we are 50/50 business partners and he's got major psychological issues that creep up every 4-6 months.

I want to walk away from our business this week. We have deposits for work that isn't complete as well as some paperwork that I need to file for compliance issues. we could be fined if they aren't completed, so I need to make sure its done. How do I get out? He's not going to buy me out, so i would just need to walk away from the business I built. I know I need to talk to the accountant and perhaps a lawyer, but its late and I need to make a list of things to do tomorrow.

We are a s-corp in NJ. Thanks for your help.

Help! I've been gifted a business!

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 11:59 PM PDT

Hello. I am looking to be pointed in the right directions and a bit of guidance.

I've been gifted a very small business from a baby boomer is a family friend. He is retiring and has faith in me.

It is an upholstery shop that does commercial, automotive, marine upholstery and residential, custom furniture. The majority of the work, if you look at it piece by piece, is custom furniture reupholstery but the others are significant and pricey projects. Those with furniture always bring in their own fabrics. There is little cost beyond rent, utilities.

There are no debts and no liabilities. It is a sole proprietorship. The thing is, I can't replace the old man's expertise craftmanship and need to hire at least one other person possibly two people to sew marine and automotive. After operation costs and his son's salary (he is paid for hours he worked to be clear) the business makes an annual profit of ~100k. Similar shops in a 100 mile radius focus on one element of the industry and he offers full service on all three areas of expertise. This not a common skill and it's even less common that someone is really great at boats, cars, and furniture.

To my shock, the owner has never advertised or marketed. He has not attempted to expand and his records are between 85-112k for two decades, which seems steady. He is well-known in the area via word of mouth. We need an updated sign on the building, business cards, and the interior of the property needs spiffied up so that is not just the front area of an old man's workshop but the office area of business that creates luxury products.

My concern is that I will not be able to operate under his blueprint. I'm not giving a grown man an allowance. His son will need to be an employee on record and I will need at least one more to sew plus I'll pay myself a fair wage. Son and I would like to have insurance. We may need a truck or van eventually.

Do I need an LLC or can I also be an SP? Should they be 1099? Do I need workers comp? What kind of business structure is this where basically it's a service provided because we're only providing labor the majority of the time? I am skilled at Marketing and Advertising but how much and when is the right time? Immediately? Is is okay to reach out to other upholstery shops that are similar in terms of employees to ask them a few questions? Maybe even to recommend someone to sew?

This dude was living in the stone-age and absolutely not concerned with increasing profits each year. There is no computer in the shop. What programs are recommended? Because I am not tracking paper receipts. Am I even going to be able to do this? My goal is to keep it afloat and expand slowly. What typically happens in situations like this? Is it unrealistic to believe I can maintain his success the first year? What should I expect?

Seeking advice on how to tweak things into this century and what I can use as a model and how to prioritize the changes I will need to make.

What would you do? Any and all tips appreciated.

How do small businesses make money?

    Entrepreneurship Project

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 11:52 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I am a student at the University of Calgary taking a course in entrepreneurship. The course is all about experiential learning, and therefore all students in the class must create some project that solves a problem could be a potential business.

The project that myself and my partner came up with involves the high amount of email messages people get everyday. We have to define a target market for our product, so we are doing customer discovery and surveying people to determine if our product actually fits the market(s) we think it will.

Here's where you all come in. We thought our product might fit small business owners and I was hoping some of you could help me by filling out a survey on our product. It's completely anonymous and should take less than 10 minutes.

Please only do the survey if you want to and feel free to message me if you have any comments.

    Here is the link: https://forms.gle/U8YrNJck9gv5rBPNA

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

I want to broadcast community events to a website, but I have some questions.

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 10:28 PM PDT

For the better part of 2 1/2 years, I have been learning the trade of what goes into a live event broadcast. While I am not about to spend $30,000 on professional equipment (or even able to), I am working towards building set up that will make decent quality live streams.

My main "revenue" would be through sponsorship, donations, and if it gets popular enough, ad revenue. I want to go this route versus charging per hour for an event, since most people would say "well I'll just stream it with my iphone if you're going to charge!"

    by going this route:

-Is getting a business license/LLC required?

    - How do taxes work in this situation, being that I do not have employees, nor will I charge a sales tax for my services?

For a long while of doing this, I will most likely not make much "income" since I will be investing my revenue into upgrading/adding cameras, obtaining a mixer/microphones for music events, etc.

and if it matters, I live in Washington State

I'm moving to Japan soon and want to start a small place during my time there. I'm leaning towards boba/tapioca/drinks. Granted, I have no experience in this arena, but I feel like it would be a low barrier to entry in terms of knowledge and finances.

Right now, it just seems like such a faraway dream, and I don't know where to start or what to look into. I think it's a big plus that my fiancee is Japanese and is willing to help because I'm sure I'll run into some Japanese bureaucracy.

Should I hire market research? Take out a loan? Look into franchising vs on my own? I'd appreciate any and all insights on what my first steps should be.

    Purpose of D&B DUNS number

So what exactly is the purpose of applying for a DUNS number? It seems like just business credit cards require a personal guarantee.

What role does a CRM play in your business?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 08:46 AM PDT

How big is your org, when did you first start using a CRM, what role does it play today and who uses it? Curious as I'm consulting for a small business that is so far behind the game in terms of software like this and I'm curious how many other small businesses use and how.

Sole Proprietor or LLC for Mobile Notary?

    Posted: 01 Oct 2019 07:57 PM PDT

I'm in the process of starting a side gig offering mobile notary services. Generally, I would go for an LLC based on my knowledge. But would this be a case where a SP would be easier?

Because of the nature of the service, I'm personally liable for any wrong doings, fraud, etc. regardless of who I work for or who owns the business.

I'm also already working on bonds/errors and omissions insurance which will also cover me personally.

ETA: I don't expect to make more than a couple hundred dollars a month maximum.
