Business partner wants to be bought out and recouped all investments even though we haven’t turned a profit yet.

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 07:25 AM PDT

Hi all! She and I had started a company together two years ago. Since that time we've invested our own money to help keep the business credit cards paid down until we (eventually and hopefully) begin turning a profit. This past month was the first time that we turn a profit. She has reached out to me saying that she would like me to buy out her half of the company and some percent of potential future profits AND to reimburse her for all the personal income that she has invested in to the company this far.

I can see her getting a piece of potential profits like a certain percent however recouping what she invested at this point where we are not turning up for profit regularly doesn't really seem to make sense. Am I missing something?

    Teenager wanting to start

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 12:03 AM PDT

Hi, i am 16 years old. I live in Denmark and i would like to start a small buisness at home! Just something small, that might be going somewhere. I know you shouldn't say "i am a teenager" Because it just a mental distraction i have heard. Because in reality people don't care who you are and how old you are. I was just wondering how i can get started and if there is any investment needed? And also how to choose a buisness idea. I would mostly liekly not sell products, because that is not my thing.

Everything is helpful, thank you <3

    Business here in California.

Cleaning out ex-employees locker (all our lockers have our own locks on them) and we found a large mason jar of weed.

Should we dispose of it? Let ex-employee know we have it? ......or smoke it?

    Any advice appreciated :)

    Wholesaler wondering about gifting/ethics.

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 09:43 AM PDT

Working with a small biz who wholesales products for grocery stores. It's a seasonal product so every year we have to re-approach managers to get shelf space.

Having said that. It's the end of season and we would like to send thank you cards with gift certificates for all their work throughout the year. . Nothing crazy. $20-30 gift card along with a thank you card. Would this or could this be construed as a bribe/unethical ploy in order to gain favor? As the recipients are in fact the people who purchase from us and negotiate shelf space.

I mean. Mega corps take clients out for $10k steak dinners all the time. So I'm guessing it isn't. But would imagine it's a slippery slope and wouldn't wanna head the wrong direction from the get.

Closing the business down In order to do a rebrand and revamp due to production issue and business partner

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 09:28 AM PDT

    Hi,

I own a dip company. It's growing in popularity and people love it.

I have been doing everything myself- meaning product creation and R&D, production, labeling, delivering, merchandizing, selling, designing, events, problems solving, etc.

The issue ? I can't keep up with demand.

I decided to get a business partner who said he was going to go all-in to help scale the company, but, he ended up being more of an advisor than anything. I think bringing him on wasn't necessarily a mistake but it certainly didn't help me the way that I thought it was going to help me to grow the company. He showed up for 2 events and gave the company $2,500 to purchase oil. But, didnt help with literally anything else for 6-7 months except 1 meeting a month to criticize me. Overall it was really frustrating and I felt constantly let down by him.

The plan was that we would work together to grow the company, but instead he put it on my shoulders like it was before. Then, yesterday, he told me basically how the company isn't doing well and he wants his $ back from the oil and wants us to sell everything we have to get as much $ back to pay him back and get $ in my pocket and pay off our business credit card too.

As much as I don't want to give up on the company I also realize the following:

    1. I don't think he's the right business partner for me because there's a lot of talk and no action and I want to get him his money back In full so that I can make a clean break and not continue to work with him. Although I like him and we are friends I don't think I can work with someone that doesn't believe In my product enough to actually help me through these difficult times and growing pains. Anytime there is an issue, he wants to throw in the towel. I just don't think he's the right fit and I think if I grow the company it's best I do it on my own and build my own team and get my own funding.

    2. If the company is going to scale production/manufacturing, packaging, and labeling needs to be done by a CO packer not hand-done by me. ( My hand is now injured permanently form doing this work for 3 years.) So, that's my next step. Figuring that out , getting the $ , and then getting it back into stores.

    3. All distribution needs to be done by distributors. I have them lined up and interested already, but I just can't support it while production is in-house.

4.The only way to do this is to take a few months off and literally restart the company from scratch

What are your thoughts on this ?

Does anyone do valet storage for universities?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 09:11 AM PDT

I have been interested in self-storage for a while and have almost pulled the trigger a few times but moved away from it for several reasons. Recently, however, I have been very interested in starting a valet storage service for the colleges in my area. There are a few universities and none of them have this. I would really like to get in contact with someone that owns or runs a similar service to ask some questions and get general insight.

    Thanks!

Company credit card tied to my credit. Advice if company shuts down.

    Posted: 22 Oct 2019 03:38 PM PDT

For the past few years I've been a part owner of a small service company with about $500k in revenue/yr but cash has always been tight. I worked a different well paying full time job and this was something that paid a few expenses and kept some friends in work. I put initial money into the company as a loan and have been paid back.

I've been involved the last year doing invoicing, accounting, and ordering and have been helping the business while I ride out a sabbatical after quitting my full time gig and riding out a sabbatical and severance.

Our credit card debt is hitting the limit ceiling. Card is used to purchase parts, fuel, airfare, etc. for job costs and other admin expenses. In the last few months our revenue has been suffering due to lack of certain installation work that was a staple of what we did. The companies we contracted with are doing their own work now.

I'm looking at a position where even if all of our customers paid Receivables, with about a month of payroll left in the bank, we would be cash negative for the business. I'm sure I want to put more money into it and I want to limit my liability which is mainly the credit card debt.

What advice do you have about limiting my personal exposure to the debt? I'm a 30% owner (with two other owners) and the company cards are tied to my credit. Thanks! This sucks!

I want to open a community center

    Posted: 22 Oct 2019 09:14 PM PDT

I don't know where to start. I guess it would be considered a community center? I'm looking to have a space that is open to the public to host various events, but mostly geared toward families and kids. I envision a space where kids can watch live music, do arts and crafts, have cooking classes for kids/guardians, have story time, etc.

Where do I start? I really want to do this for my community and I want to do it successfully.

Is it worth investing into a vending machine at my job?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 02:01 AM PDT

So I currently work at Burlington that approximately has about 10-15 employees at each shift. More on weekends of course. There's a snack machine and there's a soda machine that is owned by Pepsi. My question is...is there a way I can maybe buyout the person who runs those machines and is it even worth running a vending machine in a breakroom where only employees have access to. P.S. I hate my manager and vice versa(she's mean to me for no apparent reason) and she uses the vending machine sometimes. So when I finally leave this job and I end up do buying this vending machine in the breakroom then I would have the last laugh but ya 🙂

Physical marketing strategy; Or, How Do I Tell my Physical Marketing is Working?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 04:11 AM PDT

    Hi,

So I have a bit of a conundrum that, as a non-marketing-person, has me completely stumped.

I run a very small business supplying a consumable for a reasonably niche sport (rock climbing, including indoor/gym rock climbing).

My product is fairly cheap, and if you are a climber you will regularly be buying it over the course of your life.

The rock climbing gyms that make up a big element of the sport routinely hold competitions, parties, etc and reach out looking for prize sponsorship, goodies, etc.

I have many opportunities to give out my product for free, offer up as prizes/spot prizes and so on or just give out to everyone who buys a ticket - which would be made up of a few very serious/professional climbers and mostly punters who also climb (no spectators - everyone who attends would have a use for my product).

MY QUESTION IS: How do i decide how much of my product to give away for free?

AND: How do I know if doing so is giving a good return?

Any strategies to track how many of my customers come from trying my product as a free sample?

Any other suggestions to make this a more effective or efficient process?

Thank you very much for your input!

Starting an online course for Defensive Driving on Teachable

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 02:56 AM PDT

I've (29 y/o) been a driving instructor for the past 7 years in Florida alongside my father (67 y/o), and, over these years I've come to learn that 99% of my students have no defensive driving experience. This is crucial information people need to know, I believe. A lot of them don't even understand the concept of a moving vehicle when they get in the car, and, I was wondering if selling an online course dedicated toward building confidence, developing knowledge and strategic tact. and responsibility on the road would be something people would be interested in? If this is something that could work; Would Teachable be a good place to host this course, and, should I include videos + tutorials on how to: (Defensive Driving lesson here) ??? This is an open question for pretty much anybody, but, if any of you have experience in this field I'd seriously love to know how you got started and what you did.

I've never designed an online course before, but, I believe this could benefit both my company, the end-user and a lot of people on the road and I have nothing but experience to share. If this doesn't work out I believe I'll just make youtube videos instead, for free.

    1. Would you market this on Facebook and target it at niche demographics?
    2. Is this a shitty thing to want to sell?
    3. What are some things you'd like to be included in the course if you were to buy it (hypothetically)?
    4. Would this be something you'd buy for your children if you believed it would help them as drivers?
    5. What do you truly think about this idea?
    6. Should this be an actual lesson in person?

Sorry for all of these questions, I've been brainstorming for a while and wanted to finally take a stab at it.

    Feedback needed

    Posted: 23 Oct 2019 02:47 AM PDT

    About a month ago I launched https://www.foundergiant.com

It's basically a website for finding cofounders. I've been experimenting with ads via Microsoft ads and Reddit ads. I have noticed that Microsoft performs better. The Reddit audience will click the ad but the registration rate is lower than via Microsoft ads.

So I would appreciate some feedback on the landing page so I can figure out why the conversion rate is different. Is there anything on the landing page that would make you not sign up if you were looking for a business partner? Thanks

Need you to ask me questions about my business for FAQ section of website. Window cleaning & pressure washing business

Hello. I am making the FAQ (frequently asked questions) part of my website. I own a small window cleaning and pressure washing business. Pretend you are calling me and inquiring about an estimate on window cleaning or pressure washing service of your home.

What questions would you want to ask me during the estimate to make sure my company is suitable for the job?

    Please and thank you.

Ownership Pay - Would like to pay an owner a salary far less than minimum wage without taking ownership draw

    Posted: 22 Oct 2019 07:29 PM PDT

I'm just trying to figure out how to structure this before talking to an accountant.

Scenario: We are a multi-member LLC, and all of us put in a number of hours outside of our day jobs to slowly grow this business. I put in ~50 hours into my day job, and another 40-50 each week into this project. The others have similar splits.

One owner, who happens to be the youngest, is in the best position to dedicate more time to the business, managing the property, and running production. Essentially, he's willing to downgrade his day job to part time so that he can spend the rest of his time on-site.

Since he's dedicating so much time, in order to keep him sane, both from a mental and a financial standpoint, he floated the idea of taking $200/wk for his work.

This will be far less than minimum wage, so he wouldn't be able to be considered an employee.

We are willing to consider him a contractor if that works, but I'm not sure if it's allowed, and I'm not sure it's the easiest way forward.

I'm just not sure the best way to structure his pay so that he can dedicate more time to the business, but not have him take a full minimum wage or greater salary or an ownership draw.

How have others approached this same idea?

Best way to track inventory with no POS system?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2019 07:13 PM PDT

Hi all, could use feedback on tracking inventory.

I'll be selling bargain books, have about 200 titles each with 1-5 copies per title, and some stationary. I cannot afford any kind of POS system, budget maxed out entirely and applied for the monthly payments on Square for one of their POS systems but was denied. I have carbon copy receipt paper and was going to write down last 4 of ISBN and price on there. At the end of the day I'll record daily sales in one spreadsheet and then search my inventory spreadsheet and update # of books available.

Is there a better way of doing this?

When to cancel GL insurance after business sale?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2019 12:20 PM PDT

I am about to close the sale of my business and I'm wondering when it is safe to cancel my general liability insurance. It's technically an asset sale; I am not transferring the LLC that owned the business, just selling the assets and operation of the business. It's possible that a customer could still sue me, even a year later, for some odd reason, so maybe cancelling the insurance is a bad idea. But certainly I'm not going to keep it for years until all of the statutes run out. Any thoughts?
