Are you in sales just for money, or something else? Sales and Selling

Are you in sales just for money, or something else?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 02:06 AM PDT

    Hi all,

As the question says: are you in sales for money or something else? Ie. enjoy the thrill of the deal, enjoy working with your colleagues, the lifestyle? Interested to know thoughts. Cheers

Ps. The reason for this question is because I'm wondering whether you guys have made some good friends from the industry (colleagues, networks, contacts formed on the road) and whether you enjoy the lifestyle that sales offers.

Too much to do, too little time! Looking for some advice

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 09:45 AM PDT

I am mutual funds wholesaler. I work primarily with financial advisors and cover an entire state and a half. I cover every single firm.. that we have a selling agreement with and I have only been in this territory since April.

I am starting to develop good relationships but being a "hybrid wholesaler" (in office 3/4 of time in territory 1/4) I find it really difficult to manage my day and relationships.

I need a better way to make sure I am not forgetting about people and make sure I am following up on leads, prospecting, moving opportunities along, sending valuable information to advisors that work with me frequently and not leave things out.

What are ways you manage your territories? I have salesforce and I am fairly detail oriented. Being an organized person comes naturally to me and because of that I am shocked I can't seem to come up with a good way of managing all this information!! Any advice is welcome!

Did I get a job offer or a further interview process?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 03:03 AM PDT

Hey, I applied for my dream job around two months ago (BDM) For a month there was silence and thinking that they thought my application was a joke because I was quite underqualified for the job, I was ecstatic when I got an interview. It was a phone interview with the Head of HR and it went very well. Next phase was an in-house interview with Head of Sales and CEO, which was around 30 minutes but it went extremely well too. I was told that they'll get back to me within a week.

Well, exactly a week after I get an email from the HR saying that they see me fit a different position (BDR/BDA) and I got sent a PDF with all the details and salary & logistics. Because of this, I presumed the email was a job offer. Because it had sentences like "you'll be getting paid X, you'll be located in our X office" etc. Alongside the email they also invited me to a phone call which is around an hour. I was never notified of the process to be fair and I am wondering if this is the third step in my interview (or if I am getting re-interviewed because it's a different position but it's exactly the same as before just one lower role) or not, I am just wondering what to expect...

17 year-old sales or business opportunities

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 11:12 AM PDT

Some background: I'm 17 and currently employed as a part time D2D sales rep. My team and I sell newspapers in the suburbia Chicago area. I love the job: I pull a decent amount of sales, have great colleagues, and speaking to people at the door comes naturally to me. I've been working there for 2 years now. The thing is, I'm a senior in high school and don't plan on going to college.

My dillemma being I don't want to be stuck at this job after high school because even though I could make a living, it doesn't feel productive to me (I feel like I could be doing bigger and better things). At the same time though, my boss is looking at me as a hopeful for a crew manager position when I graduate (since I'll be able to work full-time). I'm looking for ideas and other sales or business opportunities that I could take advantage of to get ahead right after high school. I'm really open to even heading into other business sectors like SMMA or even RE.

Would that be the smart thing to do? Should I stay at my current job and wait for a promotion? Would it be smart to start SMMA as a side gig? Should I quit my job all together and look into RE?

Any advice would be much appreciated. I'm open to ideas. Thank you!

What to ask in an AE interview?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 10:53 AM PDT

I'm currently an SDR at a terrible company. I yolo applied to Zoominfo for an AE role and actually got a response.

I would LOVE to sell this product. Sales and data related technology is something I care a lot about, and I've felt the pain of being a SaaS SDR without a data/intel tool. So I know their ideal customer.

What are some good questions to ask? I've never interviewed for an AE role before so I'm not totally sure what to expect.

Seeking advice for my next career move

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 08:57 AM PDT

    Hello r/sales

A little background information before diving into my situation. I am a recent graduate from a large, fairly accredited university with a degree in Economics. I was unsure what career path I wanted to get into after graduating college so I did some research for jobs that I was qualified for and one that I could earn a decent wage from. Upon my job search I became intrigued by the possibility of working SaaS sales jobs. I started applying to strictly BDR positions in SaaS and ended up getting some interviews. Recently, I got an offer from Oracle NetSuite BDR program selling ERPs however I have some concerns for this positions. First off, I am concerned about the reputation of the position. I have read a lot of mixed reviews online and I am unsure what to believe. I had always thought of Oracle with prestige but after researching I am learning this may not be the case in the sales world. Another concern of mine is that sales might not be my end all be all career path for me and I was wondering if a position like this would hold any real weight if I decide to transition out of sales? I have never really held a sales job before and I fear that if I may not enjoy this position that I would be stuck in the sales world because that would be the only real experience I have. Lastly, I am not very knowledge on the SaaS space and don't know much about ERPs. I do not know how easy they are to sell or to tell if the ERP is a quality one. I want to make sure that if I want to get into the SaaS sales space that I am selling something that is reliable and has long term value and I do not know if ERPs are.

I believe that there are positives to the positions that I don't think should go unnoticed. The position has a starting salary point that I am looking for a first job out of college and additionally some potential to earn more. I like that there is some clear progression in the position that could allow me to move up in the company into more prominent sales role and earn more money. I also really liked the team manager that I would be joining if I accepted the position.

I just wanted to get my thoughts out to r/sales and seek some advice because the job search has been a long one so far and I don't want to make bad career decision just to have a job. I would like to know what sales professionals think of the positions and if you believe it would be the right career move for the situation that I am currently in.

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 12:03 PM PDT

As most of you know, October is breast cancer awareness month. I'm a sales rep for a distribution, and several of suppliers are running promos for breast cancer organization. A certain of the proceeds from sales with go to these groups. I wanted to start sending email regarding these promotions to my customers, but didn't want to come off as clingy or disrespectful. Wanted to get your thoughts before I started promoting.

Anyone moves from technical and project management into a sales role?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 11:34 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I worked for many years as user of these softwares and now was a project manager to develop them and now I want out to go travel and meet people. The problem? I hate selling stuff to people they don't want and hate cold calls. I am fine wih relationships building and showing what I have to offer and create /put together the right solution... Is sales not for me? Anyone moved from a technical role into sales for medical IT, scientific IT or devices?

The role is called: Account Manager or another is called Inside sales Partner Manager. Thanks

Best method for finding first real sales job?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 11:22 AM PDT

    Hey all,

So I graduated with my bachelors in business administration in December of 2018, and have been working part time in an unrelated field since, just trying to find what to do for a career. I have had two internships that I would consider sales related in the last two years, both of which involved cold calling, door knocking, account and relationship management. I am not wanting to go full time at the job I currently have and am actively seeking sales jobs now. I have an Indeed, ZipRecruiter, LinkedIn, and Glassdoor account, I have used all to an extent to look for work, mostly searching terms like "sales/business development rep," "Account executive," "sales trainee." I am looking mostly at B2B opportunities, and I am comfortable working inside or outside sales, as I haven't formed a preference yet, but outside does seem to be appealing for keeping days interesting. I have also been applying directly on some employers sites, so as not to just be tossing my resume in a pile with others that seems to happen on some of these job sites.

But I am here to ask if there are some other sites I should be using to find jobs. I have heard of Angel.co, is that useful site to use? I have noticed on the job boards that some of the jobs appear to be scams, offering "unlimited earning potential," and lots of turnover.

I am fine with grinding in a crappy role to start since it will help me to get a better job down the line, I just don't wanna end up in some crappy company that is just gonna chew me up and spit me out. Sales seems to be a field that can be hard to parse out the legitimate jobs from the scams, and I want to get in the field preferably in the next month and a half at the latest.

Sorry for ranting so long, but I just wanted to lay out my whole situation and where I am right now. Any guidance and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank y'all so much in advance and have a good day!

(Long post) AI/Robotics and career progression based on specific information

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 08:23 PM PDT

I'm building on a career path commonly recommended by the great people in this sub.. I have about a year into my big name b2b job and I'm doing very well.. not killing it, but over quota most months.

The job is definitely a grind, and I have learned a ton. I also don't mind the pressure and stress. I have a great boss, which helps.

I won't go into the negatives of the job, but I do feel like I would be a better fit selling into a more professional and educated client base.

With that said, I will also mention that I do not hold a degree. My company does offer tuition reimbursement, but I am required to pay it back if I leave within a certain timeframe.

I am able to self educate and have a natural ability to retain information. I am articulate and personable with a knack for building report and establishing empathy quickly.

A very trusted mentor (C-Suite auto mfg retired) recently advised me that robotics and AI is where salespeople will make big money in the coming decades.

Based on the information I have given you, and the knowledge/experience you have..

Put yourself in my shoes, and explain how you would shape the next 5 years of your professional life..

I am happy to provide any additional information.

I look forward to and appreciate your responses!

Taking on a commission-only role on top of a full time job?

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 06:07 AM PDT

I currently have a full time job - About 50% of my day I function as an SDR, and the other 50% consists of managing sales functions for our clients.

Management at my company is pushing me towards an account management role after only a couple months as an SDR because they know I can do it in my sleep, and that's what they need most right now.

Point being - Closing business represents close to 0% of what I'm doing. I'm the top SDR at my company, bar none. I know the new role that I'm on-ramping to doesn't align with the skill set that I want to develop (AE).

My company is growing so fast that they are in dire need of AM's - they can't take on another AE at this point in time, so my current company is off the table for AE experience until early next year.

I don't want to leave this company after working here for only 3 months - But at the same time, my responsibilities here are a joke compared to what I'm capable of - I am not being challenged in any way, shape or form here.

I need more responsibility, and I need the opportunity to experience a b2b closing role as soon as humanly possible.

Should I find a part time commission-only role on top of my full time job, or should I just calm the fuck down and wait for an AE opening at my current company in 3-6 months?

    Life at ADP

    Posted: 07 Oct 2019 08:38 AM PDT

I have a final round at ADP, and would like to hear from people who have worked there on how they enjoyed their time there, the training, etc.?

Where do leads come from? Are they all self-generated? Do you get a database to call out of?

Job is Middle Market sales. I do outside SMB elsewhere (not software), and goal is to get to Enterprise Sales in SaaS. Should I be looking elsewhere or is this a good place to spend 3-5 years to get me the skills to do Enterprise?

How do you structure your day?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 10:28 PM PDT

Hi everyone, I am wondering how do you structure your day (when not going out meeting clients)?

I am in fields sales (Tech Sales, Cloud) and have basically three main jobs:

    1) creating opportunities / filling up the pipeline

    2) working on current deals / closing them

    3) taking care of the past won deals / upselling

I feel that I could do better in structuring my day(s), since I am wasting a lot of time on (3) or getting information about (2) and hurting my (1) efforts.

Thank you for any tips and your personal experiences :)

How Is The Service You Are Getting?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 07:47 PM PDT

    Hey All,

I am in the wholesaling biz and I know there are alot of B2B tech sales guys on here so I know you can relate to this question:

How has your current vendor supported you? How is the service you are getting? What type of support are you getting? etc

A common reason why sales guys ask this question is to find out just what you are up against in competition. If they aren't in love, dont have a strong relationship, etc we know our task is going to be much easier. We all the know if someone is in love with their current vendor, especially the service and relationship, it is going to be darn near impossible. Myself included, in this biz you are basically all the same for price (no one is cheaper, etc).

My questions are what do you say in lieu of

    1. "how is the current service you are getting?"
    2. And if you do happen to ask the question, what is your strategy if they say "they support me very well", couldnt be getting better service, I love my wholesaler, etc?

all responses are very much appreciated!

How to prepare for a 3hr in-person interview?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 10:42 PM PDT

    Hello!

I have a 3hr interview for a BDR position this week where I am meeting 4/5 people.

I am researching their Saas product and people.

For the 3hr interview what should I take? I was thinking of taking a copy of my resume and interview assignment on hand for each person.

Should I take a notebook to take notes? I'm not sure how else to prepare.

Quick Question - about being put on a PIP (Performance Improvement Plan)?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2019 05:41 PM PDT

First year with this company and I've only hit quota a few times this year (monthly based).

Was notified that I'm being put on plan starting Monday from my Manager on Friday. I had a difficult start, but managed to hit 85% this quarter vs low 50s for the rest of my quarters. I'm definitely showing an uptick, but a little surprised they are still pursuing the PIP. We did have a pretty bad q3 as a team though.

I'm hitting all the other KPI's but my customers are terrible at pulling the trigger. Usually don't lose to another competitor but indecision or we'll revisit this later on decision.

I've been bringing my manager to all my last stage calls for demonstrations and price walks through and decision calls.

anyone have any advice for me how to go forward to cover all my bases, while this goes on? Any questions I should ask, documentation? I've already started scouting other jobs and updating my resume.

Thanks for your replies in advance!
