Posted: 29 Sep 2019 08:42 PM PDT Feeling like I acquired some emotional baggage from working at a startup I can say that I've owned part of a startup, got my name on some patent applications, interned and advanced to a regular position, stuck through hard times to salvage a project, and went from concept to working prototype that met the requirements both better and cheaper than the previous guy could. On the other hand, they could rarely pay me, I've had to work two jobs this entire time to stay above water, the opportunity costs ended up being more than if I'd just worked a regular internship-to-office-job while living at home, and I'm looking at therapy for stress induced clinical depression w/ anxiety. I've seen relationship breakups less confusing than this about where the chips landed or even how to feel [link] [comments] |
New Dir. of Ops- help me please. Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:27 PM PDT I just left corporate America and joined a somewhat mature tech startup- 4 years old, solid growth, under 10 employees (half of which are remote). Unfortunately, it's been about a month and I'm wondering if I made a bad choice- I'm hoping you can give me a better perspective on whether I need to continue my job search or try to stick this out. The president and VP of Dev are close cousins. The VPs 23 year old daughter has worked in an admin capacity for the past few years with no real structure or oversight. I quickly learned that we're paying her a generous full time salary, even though from what I can tell she works about 10 hours a week. I was told to give her "some structure", but I'm already having issues with a huge backlog of dev issues and their angry clients because the VP does 90% of the dev and programming work and is really behind. He's been combative to new ideas and in status check emails and refuses to collaborate with the newly hired developer- making this new kid completely ineffective because he has no guidance. I've tried a few gentle techniques to try to get the daughter in line to no avail- and I'm hesitant to treat her as I normally would because I think she'll revolt and we will have a family feud. I now feel like I was brought on as a sacrificial lamb to shield the president from angry client calls and to somehow deal with the family situation for him. I've been given zero training and have had to figure out where data is and how to access it by myself. Seasoned employees are calling me at their wits end with stress because we can't get what we need from dev- I can tell they are close to quitting. Every day I feel more and more like myself and the other new employee are being set up to fail. The business is growing but also at risk of failure if we can't get ourselves back on track and producing deliverables in time. I'm being told to handle outstanding client requests with no idea what I'm doing. I've got a meeting with the Pres tomorrow and I'm pretty sure he's going to be upset with me for not getting info to a client on Friday night- but I couldn't because he pulled the one person off that project in favor of a different one and it didn't get done. I'm sick of sending no update updates to client and getting chewed out. Is this kind of messy phase normal with rapidly growing new companies? Do I dare tell the president that his family is the issue even though I know he doesn't believe it? Do I need to run? [link] [comments] |
Am I blowing this out of proportion? Posted: 30 Sep 2019 01:36 AM PDT I work for a 200+ person well funded startup that probably won't make it on its own but will likely be bought out by one of many big competitors. This is reason enough to hang on as long as possible I think, given the equity I have. However, the kids running the show have acted like a cat chasing a laser pointer for quite some time and a restructuring took place a few months ago to help focus certain groups. I was bumped up to my first managerial position as a benefit. I am loving it and have been praised for how I handled to transition from co-worker to boss for my team. Now, the CEO has stepped aside to bring in a seasoned vet in the industry (great move I think!). He promptly fired my direct report (V.P.) and I was told I would be reporting to another guy (not a replacement for the V.P.) who has a job description that sounds just like mine. When I said it sounded like a demotion I was told, "don't think of it like that." Well that sounds like I'm back to co-worker status as of the end of this week. If this is the case, no one is telling me I did a bad job but I'm losing my position. I feel on principle I should leave. No? I may feel overly hurt after being recognized for the 100+ hr weeks, all nighters, literally 1/4 of the year on another continent with toddlers running around my house and then having it snatched away for a reason I can't understand. Posted: 29 Sep 2019 12:48 PM PDT So me and a coupple of friends started our company 6 months ago, our company deals in digital media (graphics , 3d , architecure, animation etc). We are 6 people in total (share holders). Things have been tough lately but we managed to come this far by doing small projects, we were hoping to find a sponser or an invester in the future but we didnt, morale has been quite low for these past few weeks but today 3 of my friends told me that they want to leave the company, we have a meeting tomorrow and i am preeety sure the remaining two will decide to leave too and if they do, that will leave me alone and right now i cant afford to pay for the expenses like ( rent, electricity etc) and i dont come from a rich family i cant borrow some money from my family. i dont know if i should stay or also leave, i just dont want to regret later that i didnt try in my 20's or i didnt give it my all. Before we would all pitch in if there was a loss. we also used to share the profits equally, but now i dont know if i can afford a loss alone and once they leave i would also loose alot of work force and wont be able to do projects alone, any uggestions ? Where to get a 3D design of my prototype? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:26 PM PDT I have an idea that I want to make into a prototype. Unfortunately, I'm really bad at drawing and have no experience using 3D designers. The product is pretty simple and I'm sure someone who can do 3D design could do it pretty easily. Injection molding company I want to make my prototype at needs a 3D design so they can make it and I was hoping you guys would have suggestions on where I could get it done for a reasonable price. All help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Matchdaylist - There is always a football match nearby! Posted: 30 Sep 2019 12:48 AM PDT Hi! I have made this site where you can search for football matches nearby. Enter the arrival date, leaving date, address and/or city and the range you want to search in. This will give you a result with the football games played matching the datapoints you have entered. If you have feedback or good ideas for Matchdaylist, I'd love to hear it. Send me a message and I will check. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Giving Equity in Single-Member LLC, Transition to Partnership Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:38 PM PDT Hi, I recently started and own a single member LLC, and I'd like to bring someone on as a partner, with me remaining the manager and majority equity holder of a partnership manager-managed LLC. My reason for doing this is that they have been working for me for free, brought in clients, and we'd like to avoid an employee-employer relationship, where social security and 15% employee taxes would be incurred to my (soon to be "our") company. I've read the basics, and I think I understand the tax implications of this -- I'll have to do a short year return before and after the partnership is established -- and I also think the new partner will have to pay taxes on the gifted equity upfront -- but I was just wondering if there is anything else I consider? A question I have: Will the partner be able to draw greater than their equity, if I think they deserve it? For example, if they are handling a clients account entirely on their own, could I authorize the to draw greater profit as I see fit? Is this legal, tax-wise? Really just seeking any advice here from anyone who may have experience in doing this! Thanks! [link] [comments] |
How to find customers for online platorm to get feedback Posted: 29 Sep 2019 11:09 AM PDT Hello, I am a first-year computer science student and I have been working on an online platform with a friend for more than six months in cooperation with our old high school. The platform is a school managing system aimed towards setting goals within the school environment and completing them. The problem is we can't seem to find any schools that want to try our platform so we can gather feedback to further improve it other than our old high school. We have tried emailing different schools but the emails are simply ignored or end up with the wrong people. We really want to further improve our platform but we simply do not know how to get schools to try it. Are there other ways of contacting schools or getting feedback? Thanks in advance! Selling to older customers when you are or look young Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:51 AM PDT We are UK based app company that builds bespoke customisable apps for small businesses Recently I've found that when we speak to prospects over the phone they are super interested in our product and want to buy almost instantly. When we go for the f2f meeting it changes.. They get really surpised i'm young (Some have said it) and unintentionally start to patronise. Prospects lose faith that we can deliver or think we are an overnight business. Has anyone else experienced this or am I just paranoid. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:34 AM PDT I have an idea for an app and I've been working on it for about a month now. I've also planned the business model, the MVP and other basic things required. I'm thinking to find a tech co-founder who could execute my ideas into reality. As a founder I can take up the responsibility of marketing initially (I'm also learning coding) and I also have the necessary contacts of people who could invest once our product gets some air. I also have a network of our customers (students) to whom I've put forward my ideas and they were really excited to see it turn to reality. They've been having this problem for quite a long time and really are in need of a solution. This app solves all of their major problems and increases their efficiency and makes studying more fun to them. and I'm interested in building more such apps which could help benefit students, employees and our environment and in the process make us money. If you have some advice or would like to join or talk to me feel free to contact. [link] [comments] |
Startup offers equity compensation based on performance Posted: 29 Sep 2019 09:05 AM PDT Hi there ! I've received an offer to work as developer in a startup in exchange of equity (6 month of work, then I would get a salary). I would be the only developer and my job would be to redevelop their MVP written with a nocode tool. They offered me between 3% and 10% based on my performances. The founder asked me to come up with some KPIs to evaluate my work. Ive some hard time to come up with objective KPIs, some example given where code quality, user experience, time of development. Did you meet this kind of situation before? What KPIs did you used ? [link] [comments] |
Whitelabling Offer on my Software Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:41 AM PDT Looking for a bit of advice here on anyone who has been through this before... We're a School Management Software and a potential client wants to get a price on whitelabling our software as he has 70+ schools and can't afford a recurring subscription model. Whats your thoughts? How do you normally price this? Cheers M [link] [comments] |
How do you tell your partner you no longer want to work with them? Posted: 29 Sep 2019 06:07 AM PDT *We are in pre launch and completed MVP stage Hello! I am in highschool and I really don't have much experience in the startup field so I came here to ask for advice. I realized that my partner in college has been using me a lot. Basically while we both come up with ideas I code everything which is fine but he repeatedly switches his ideas and expects me to start over. Additionally, I did not know this until recently but the project should become leaner over time but he continuously wants to add more functionality. We also changed the core mechanics of the project which makes me not passionate about it anymore. I am biased towards the solution but that was the reason I joined in the first place and he said he no longer wanted it and replace it with something else. Personally, I believe without that core mechanic the app loses its value and I don't even want to work on it anymore. He is also non-technical which is fine since I can't do what non-technical people do but he does not follow that agenda. This is because he is not planning much for anything regarding marketing and he has not done any research on the target market despite asking him too. In the beginning I asked him to do things like research and he would brush it off and ask for an update on coding. Finally, since he is non-technical he doesn't understand what is feasible and what is not. I feel like he has become an "idea person" and is basically using me as a developer even though I had many ideas. While my goal is to make the application flexible, simple, innovative, and convenient it seems like he wants to add more functionality and do many things that are similar to many other companies. Additionally, if he had researched the market he would have noticed that there had been an app that failed that is very similar to what we are doing. Am I being obnoxious or should I not work with him? If so how do I tell him? [link] [comments] |
