    My PIP story-2 years on

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:26 AM PDT

    Using a throwaway account.

I got placed on a PIP after a year and a half at a B4 firm. I have heard that to be placed on a PIP you have to be borderline terrible which of course does not make me feel great but I decided to write this post to help other people who may be going through the same thing.

I was rated as meets expectations overall. My utilisation was 76% and the firm average was 74%. The majority of my reviews were at level across the board by different managers which is supposed to be better than what most new associates were meant to be getting. So what went wrong?

Unfortunately,I had 2 very bad reviews. I had been on about 10 audit jobs and 8 of them went well or okay and 2 went terribly. I was on those bad jobs for about 5 months and I was placed on the PIP after 18 months.

The full story is a lot longer and more complicated than what I am writing above but those are the hard facts with all the emotionality taken out. I worked extremely hard, and never took a sick day and always completed my work but even that was not enough.

Anyway, I ended up leaving the firm halfway through the PIP. I wish I could say that everything worked out fine after that but I was in a bad place for a while because my confidence was wrecked. I no longer believed in myself and I knew I was capable deep down, but to fail in such a public manner was very painful but I survived and was at my next job for another couple of years and passed most of my exams.

My advice to anyone on a PIP is that your life will not end. Your career may be derailed and your confidence crushed but eventually the memories will fade. I always carried the shame of being not enough that the company didn't even want me but after a lot of self-reflection I realised,I shouldn't have had to try so hard for something that was meant to be mine. I would have broken up with a person if a relationship took so much of me for so little back,so why was I holding on to a job which gave me so little back and demanded so much?

I don't know what my future holds,if I will still carry on in accounting or try something else. I am no longer afraid though and am grateful to have the freedom to experiment and fail. I hope for anyone else who is struggling or has struggled, know that it is okay and you will live.

So that is my PIP story basically. Feel free to ask any questions if you have any.

What can I get with just a degree in accounting, no experience?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:52 PM PDT

I'm getting my accounting degree in the next 6 months from WGU. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to land an accounting job with just that (especially because it's an online school) but I was curious if I could land like a data entry job or bookkeeping or something to get experience. In general I was also just wondering what jobs would take me. I don't need anything fancy just like $15+ per hour and not Mcdonald's. Hell, I kinda like the sound of Data Entry because data analysis sounds more interesting to me than accounting, but we'll see I guess.

Interning seems a bit too committal unless it's paid. I don't want to work for free.

Will I struggle at Big 4?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:19 PM PDT

Recently completed a summer internship for a firm. Accepted the position and I'm excited to finally start my career but I'm having doubts about my capabilities.

Throughout high school and college, I've been a consistent B+ student. I've never received an A in an accounting class (normally B or B+) and tbh I'm probably going to have to re-learn details again when studying for the CPA (for the most part I remember broad topics and basic concepts).

It seems that many of my peers/future coworkers are extremely smart "Type A, straight and narrow over achievers" who pretend to have Type B personalities. Meanwhile, I actually have a Type B personality with what I would consider slightly above average intelligence, however I still manage to get everything done. I want to say I'm not lazy, and I will absolutely grind when I need to, but I do enjoy taking life easy.

I'm worried that when I start working and being compared to my peers, I will not be considered as "good" as them and it will hurt my career. Currently, I'm working on getting better at excel so I'm not completely lost when I start. Just afraid of being marked as a "low performer" and having that reputation follow me around the firm. I see a lot of PIP posts and they are kinda scary haha

Any advice to get ahead? Did anyone else ever feel like this?

Is it common for BDO to offer sophomores an SLP?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 11:02 PM PDT

I met with BDO at my university's career showcase and hit it off with a recruiter and sent him a follow-up email. I didn't think much of it but they sent me an email a few days later saying they were offering me an on-campus interview.

I accepted but I'm not sure what to really expect. There wasn't even an SLP option when they made me reapply so I just picked a 2020 Auditing internship even though I'm just a sophomore.

Anyways, I was wondering if they just invited me as somewhat of a formality or if they do legitimately consider sophomores for their SLP programs.

Tip for CPA studying when you need to drown out sound. Listen to Piano Dreamers, no words to songs to pull your attention away. But a soothing background sound. They play hit songs on, get this... a piano.

Big 4 Internal Audit Busy Season

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 07:09 PM PDT

Hi, I just received an offer for internal audit at one of the big 4. I was wondering about the hours during the busy season. I was told it wouldn't be more than 50hrs, but I'm a little skeptical. Any thoughts?

[Australia] Career path in KPMG, how hard is it to get promoted?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 10:50 PM PDT

Hi, I am an international student in AU and received an offer from KPMG. I will start working in the Enterprise Audit&Assurence and risk consulting service line in Feb 2020.

Right now I basically don't know anything about my work except for the information on the KPMG website, so I really hope someone can share their knowledge with me.

    1. what is the career path in KPMG, I mean how long on average will it take for me to get to a senior accountant or manager.
    2. what is the work/life balance in this service line? when do employees usually get off work in the busy season and normal days?
    3. what will I be doing in the first year of my career, is it difficult and stressful? what should I do from now to Feb 2020 to better adapt to my work?
    4. I will be graduating from a master of professional accounting program this November. But now I am also doing another master of science in analytics at the same time (I am doing it part-time, online and have completed almost 50%). So, is this master of science in analytics going to add value to my career in KPMG, is the time spent worthwhile to my career? I am just not so sure about that.

Thank you very much for answering my questions.

Received a zero grade and I NEVER cheated

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 04:30 PM PDT

So sorry if this is not the right sub. But this is my first semester for my MBA.. My professor gave me a zero on a project that is worth a lot of points. He said it matches an online source at 40$. I really never cheated. Do you think he will ever change his mind? I've been calling him for an hour but he's not picking up. I really don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight.

[CAN] What is the salary expectation for Big 4 senior tax going to industry?

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 03:48 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

Anybody has knowledge of the salary range I should expect once I start seeking opportunities in Industry?

I finished my first year as a senior in Big 4 Tax in Vancouver BC (About 2.7 years in Big 4 and 1 year as a co-op) which was lot of tax and light NTR.

Not exactly sure what my worth would be and asking recruiter would not be the wisest idea. I did some google search but the range of information was too broad like just giving information of Vancouver accounting market's average salary

Thanks for anybody who can share any data or personal experience.

Entering masters of accounting program with Big4 Full-time offer, am i burnt out????

    Posted: 29 Sep 2019 12:11 PM PDT

I'll be graduating from undergrad in a couple of months and intend to start the master's of accounting (or masters of science in accounting) at the start of 2020. I'd finish master's by dec 2020 and start full-time at a Big4 firm summer 2021. So I'm currently about a year and a half out from starting full time, and it's time to apply to the graduate program. For whatever reason I'm having a ton of internal conflict about a career in Big4 and honestly just about accounting in general. (and life in general lol)

After my internship this past summer, I received a full time offer for 2yrs out. A big part of my anxiety about this topic relates to my relationship with the firm because I don't want to just blindside them and have them be upset or something since I've already signed...

I genuinely am just pretty conflicted about what I want to do in life. On one hand- I am on track to get my masters, take the CPA exams, and start full time with a well known firm. I have a perfect 'package' and path laid out infant of me. Part of me is like "why the heck would i back out now just because i'm scared?!!" Is it just my anxiety telling me to be scared? I mean i've made it this far and the firm obviously sees it in me to be successful. So should I just keep going? Maybe i'll like the masters program... and I'll finally kick my depression and anxiety to the curb and accounting will feel good again? for about 12K do I take that chance?

On the otherrrrr hand- I have been trying to get my mental health on track for the past couple of years. At the start of my jr year I quickly felt very overwhelmed/stressed/scared/sad/depressed about absolutely everything. So within that 1st month, I dropped down to a part-time student, began taking both an anti anxiety medication and an anti depression medication, and seeing a therapist every few weeks. So now 2yrs later I'm still taking the meds, but I still feel like i'm 'trying to get my head on straight" and get back to the girl who was able to focus and was determined & motivated to do her homework and who literally spent hours on hours mastering the content and excelling. I keep feeling like I want something more. Something more out of life? It's like I'm eager for something more more more. And part of me wonders if all the conflict and emotional/mental health issues are stemming from the biggest 'piece' of my life over the past 4.5 yrs... AKA school/career/accounting.

So I guess my biggest question for you guys is this: have any of you entered the masters program or started full time with similar uncertainty? Have you been successful?
