    I’m always footing the bill....

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 11:20 AM PDT

I got a phone call early this morning..... it's a collect call from county jail where my idiot brother is for getting a DUI last night. Of course the instant thought is he wants me to bail him out which I would have been totally fine with if I had the slightest belief in his ability to pay me back. Sadly I had to tell him I can't afford it and he says yeah right and hangs up on me.

LOOK, I get it! When most people think business owner they think money, cars, vacations but no. I am not rich. I own a T-Shirt printing company with 3 locations and after paying my 8 employees I clear about 50 grand after taxes. Yet because my friends and family see that I own a business they treat me like I'm a millionaire regardless of how many times I try to explain to them I can't afford certain things. They think because I drive a moderately nice car and own my condo I'm rolling in money. Sorry for going on a tangent I just needed to get this out. It would be nice to go out to dinner and not have alligator armed friends. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Yelp ruining businesses

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 08:30 PM PDT

Yelp is notorious for ruining business By hiding and deleting 5 star reviews if you decide not to pay them money for their subscription "services". Is their anything business owners can do?

Subscription Business Idea - Based on something I was trying to purchase for myself.

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 03:44 AM PDT

So, I am teetotal and no longer drink alcohol but I still enjoy socialising in pubs and bars and often drink non-alcoholic beers/lagers/ales whilst I am out, often a non-alcoholic cocktail made with fake-Gin like Seedlip or similar. More and more companies are popping up making Low AV and/or Non-alcoholic beverages. Personally I don't know much about the industry, as a 'drinker' for decades I became aware of what I liked and didn't, who made the best of what I liked to drink (and who didn't) etc, but often when I got to a bar i'll say "Non-alki beer please" and I'll get what i'm given. No choices or suggestions from bar staff.

The other day, with a family trip planned (all my family drink alcohol) I decided to see if I could buy online some bespoke non-alcoholic beers, or ciders or a combination.

But I didn't want to just buy a batch of 12x or 24x of a particular brand/drink that I don't know if I even like, so I searched for a subscription service that might send a plethora of different types/brands/flavours to me with details on the company, how they came about, possibly even adding in non-alcoholic spirits with a combination of beers and spirits...

... Maybe even some mixers to compliment and an ingredients guide (like I say this is just an inkling of an idea). My wife said that this would have been something she would have embraced when she was pregnant, she told me the story of when she went to our local supermarket and they laughed when she asked if they sold Non-alcoholic wines.

I just wanted to crowd-source opinion first off, presuming that I am a niche and the only person to ever google 'non-alcoholic beer subscription service' or if you would, maybe during 'Stoptober - https://www.gosober.org.uk/ ' or if you too don't drink alcohol, during pregnancy or to support your pregnant significant other, during a January 'dry out' or similar health kick. The lists of reasons are many.

Happy to hear any and all thoughts.

Employee phone usage during working hours

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 03:30 AM PDT

So we run a small ice cream store and we allow the employees(cashier) to sit and use their phones when there are no customers/work to do. I've seen other local dessert stores where the employees aren't even allowed to sit and cannot use their cellphones. Are we being too generous with our employees? I mean after all, we're paying them to work and not use their phones. To those of you who have worked in/owns a dessert store, does this seem like a normal rule? What do you guys think?

Designing an agreement for joining an existing business

    Posted: 02 Sep 2019 01:09 AM PDT

If Alan has built a popular youtube channel and after a few years his friend Bob comes on board to collaborate on content, scale up the channel and grow the business – what would be a good agreement between them?

    – Profit split on new content (50/50 , straight percentage, sliding scale)

    – How to revenue split spin off ventures (such as merchandise)

    – What else should be considered?

Need some advice on sales tax

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 08:51 PM PDT

Hey all! I'll keep this short and sweet.

Independent small business owner here in Florida, have worked with breweries to create a compendium of special offers and discounts and free beer along the emerald coast. Essentially it's a sexy coupon book for beer lovers. Not original, but new to this area.

Anyway, I will be distributing these this week to all participating breweries. My wife just asked me how will you collect sales tax, and to be honest I'm a little unsure. Sales will take place on three fronts: online on the website, in person at festivals, conferences, etc, and then at the breweries themselves. Now I can add sales tax in person and online, but I don't know what to do regarding the breweries. The books will sell for $25 each, so do I ask the breweries to add the sales tax themselves, or do I just tell them to add $1.05 to each book (roughly)...or, and this is the case in Pennsylvania, do coupon books not need to pay sales tax because there are offers from retailers inside which will covers sales tax.

I'm confused and obviously still green, so any advice would be appreciated.

    Best POS System?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 07:14 PM PDT

Currently I have Revel set up in the small business I took over. I was just going to keep everything the same but recently they've goofed on my invoice (basically charging me triple the amount it should have been) so I just want to keep my options open incase they won't change the charges.

What do you use and how do you find it? I live in Canada and currently use an iPad for our till. I'm open to reasonable options as I'm just starting out so budget it tight for a while.

I've heard of Square and it's a possibility. Any personal experience with it?

    Thanks for the help :)

    Trying to model/optimise small business

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 06:48 PM PDT

    Hey,

I am thinking of running a some sort of a business model to optimise the small business, even before the start...

What I want to achieve - is to get the best outcome from the very first try. because, honestly, I am a bit of afraid of starting out :)

The business that I want to run is a simple consultancy in the IT field, devops space to be more precise. My current approach to model it is to build the process from a set of simple blocks. Each block will have some function built-in and a time that will be spent on this task. Then, in theory, if I have this model I would be able to optimise it and have the least possible expenses with the best outcome. Or something similar to this :)

So now I have 2 questions:

    - is it worth it to build those models? Does anyone tried to do something like this? Maybe after they started because something was not working right?

    - maybe it was done already and there are some courses or models available online?

    Question on work related injury

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 06:05 PM PDT

someone gets small cuts at work, and does not take care of them properly (injury never reported, first aid never administered neither at work nor by the employee on personal time) and they develop into staff infection. Said person admits in text message form that injury was not work related. Apparently doctor is now deeming it to be a work injury. Is this right? Sounds like bullshit.

As far as I know my insurance shouldn't have to cover anything as it was not documented. Correct?

How to grow audience for home bread bakery?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 10:16 AM PDT

    Hello all,

I am currently perfecting my skill to sell bread, I make and bake at home. I use simple and healthy ingredients and hand mix everything. I post to instagram, facebook and my blog (not nearly enough, I know, improving on that.) I have many people inquire about my bread. I just was curious if any one had any advice on how often to post on social media platforms to grow and sustain an audience? I am also curious if I sell baked breads out of my home do I have to do anything with my state for taxes or anything? Any advice from home bakers or anyone with experience with this would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

I want to buy an existing business from a friend, but don't know how

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 05:38 PM PDT

    Hi all,

My sister-in-law's father has run a successful eye doctor's office in a growing market for many years. The business has a loyal following of locals and the business seems solid. I haven't looked at the books, but all seems well. The parents want to retire, but have had trouble selling, and their children are not interested in taking on the business. I'm told that part of the difficulty is that they own both the business and the property, which has made the deal very expensive for any prospective buyer.

The idea has been floated for me to take on the business and get away from my engineering career. Obviously I am not an eye doctor and don't know the business, but I have managed multiple businesses with direct customer service in other industries. I am very confident that I can retain the customer base and maintain the business and continue it's success.

My big concern is that my finances are not solid enough to work a deal to buy the business. My available capital is very limited and I have no property to leverage. My credit is very good and my current debts are low, but I don't own a home yet. I went back to college at 25 and just got my bachelor's in mechanical engineering in December, so I'm sort of just starting out, even though I'm 32.

Question is; am I crazy? Can it be done(we're talking probably at least 2M for the business)? What would a bank need to see to consider a loan for such a deal?

    Thanks all for any help.

Adding a business partner - best way to lower risk?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 04:04 PM PDT

I've got a guy who will bring tremendous talent to my business (consulting through marketing analysis and being a fractional cfo).

I'm confident that bringing him on will more than double our revenues.

However, it's always rosy on the front end, and I do t want to end with one of us needing to buy out the other, though I am willing to give him most of the incremental profits he brings.

Is there a way to do this where we're not doing big risks? Thoughts?

[OC] My project tracker for all clients and marketing tactics

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 05:04 AM PDT

    Hi all,

There are a ton of productivity apps out there, hundreds, we all know them, but it can be frustrating sometimes to get the features from behind a paywall, or to work with clients who just don't want to adopt a new system. Sometimes different teams internally don't feel like jumping onboard the basecamp train.

For this reason my go-to productivity tool for working with clients and different stakeholders within companies is still excel. But spreadsheets can be ugly, effort, and don't contain everything in one location.

This is why I have a one-sheet project tracker that can be used in Google Sheets or Excel. I keep track of 5 really important metrics across the top, and have a simple plan/actual visualisation next to it for any visual thinkers.

Below I track the work we do each month to help those metrics increase - causation and correlation.

It's view only for you all here but you can download it if you think it will help you in your own daily work.

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XkpbYrZ1qdjofgIZGXFb9zqEzoojKAhnhduO1vs2yII/edit?usp=sharing

Side note: please send across your feedback. I am growing my business from a consultancy to a full service B2B agency and intend to make more tools like this that double down as content marketing for anyone not ready to pay for our services yet.

[VANCOUVER, CANADA] Wondering what the steps are to start a small photography business. Roadmap of registering my business.

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 09:58 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

I am a hobbyist photographer who sometimes gets paid to do portraits, real estate images. I think maybe I should start considering creating a small business at this point.

Just like the title says, I am curious if you can direct me to a roadmap of what is required to register, license, a small photography business and what the minimum income is required to file for taxes?

I'm sure this information is on some govt website, but I figure you all would have a more easily digestible direction to give.

Thanks so much for all of your help and input.

How much does style and brand community cause people to not buy?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2019 04:41 PM PDT

it seems like 80% of customers will only buy from top mass market brand where the style and brand are general. hyundai, toyota, ford. Then the rest will buy from a niche brand ferrari, porsche, jeep, tesla. The niche/luxury brands require style, status, community.

How much does style and community have an impact on consumers WANTING and NOT WANTING to buy? They want to buy because it does/doesn't fits their taste enough, or it totally fits their lifestyle. Ford vs Toyota. Android vs Apple.

Example: Harley Davidson motorcycle looks to be selling their lifestyle as their selling point, and the sound and feel of the motorcycle. Excludes other motorcyclists

Example: Patagonia has a high end, casual feel. Fits in with the professional working class. And excludes the lower economic class.

How does a company make a product that still appeals to the general public even though its distinct? Like a Harley davidson is distinct yet generally is pleasing to most.
