    Confused about hospital insurance

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:19 PM PDT

Hi folks, so I'm shopping around for an in-network hospital, and I see that the same hospital is listed twice, but each with a different subheading, one of which is SKILLED NURSING FACILITY, and the other is HOSPITAL - GENERAL ACUTE CARE. Does this mean that only those two sections of the hospital are covered? I had always thought it was about which hospitals are in-network. I didn't realize it could be some parts of the hospital being in-network and others not. This seems crazy to me. I'm new to using insurance and it's a world of anxiety and confusion.

Root Insurance - At Fault Driver's Insurance Won't Proceed with Claim Because the Driver Won't Answer His Phone

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:06 PM PDT

Some of the following details might be relevant to my question, but I wanted to paint the full picture of the incident.

My mother's new car was recently hit in a McDonald's parking lot (Pennsylvania) on September 14th. She was parked and inside the McDonald's when this happened. The man who hit her must've hit the car (front passenger-side door), backed out of the space, and pulled back in straight, ignoring the incident. There was a large scrape/dent on my mom's car where his bumper would've hit and there was dirt/paint on the left corner of the man's bumper.

When my parents came out to the car, the man who'd hit the car was just coming out as well. He initially claimed that he didn't hit her car (and was yelling things like "this is why I don't park next to old people!"). When they pointed out his bumper, he went inside his car, pulled out a t-shirt, shoved past my mom (ripping her shirt in the process), dipped the shirt in a puddle, and frantically wiped off the dirt and paint from his bumper. The police were called, and they were very familiar with this man (first thing they said was "[Man's first name], are you off your meds again?"). The incident was written up, but since it happened on private property, the police said there was nothing they could do.

Insurance information was exchanged, but the man suggested that he pay for the damage out of pocket and "add a few hundred extra for the inconvenience." My mom immediately started a claim with Root (the man's insurance) and they had someone come out to photograph the damage. Two weeks have gone by without any progress. She finally got a hold of someone at Root yesterday who said that the reason that there's been no progress is because the at-fault driver is not answering his phone. They advised that she file a claim with her own insurance instead (she'd be responsible for a deductible then and possibly a rate increase).

My question: Is not answering your phone seriously a way to avoid legal/financial responsibility for an accident if you're insured? Or is Root just hoping that my mom won't press the issue so they won't have to pay out a claim?

am I being dumb and lazy for staying with Geico auto insurance for the last 26 years?

am I being dumb and lazy for staying with Geico auto insurance for the last 26 years?

I was asking questions around here for a relative... then it occurred to me that I should also look into my own policy.... the first thing that I saw when I took it out was "Thank you for being a Geico customer for the last 26 years!"

Then it hit me.... am I being dumb and lazy for staying with Geico auto insurance for the last 26 years? I have no complaints about their service. Only had 2 claims during all those 26 years. One was a deer collision and the other was when my car slid down an airport parking lot when nobody was in the car during a big ice storm.

Those were my only in-person dealings with Geico employees. In both cases they took care of everything and made it a hassle-free experience for me.

As far as premium goes, I just assumed that I was getting the best rates based on my long history with them... although I can't say for sure.. now I'm tempted to look around....

Why would increasing my coverage lower my premium?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 10:48 PM PDT

I signed up Geico for an HO-6 policy last week with a policy starting October 11. Initially I told them to give me minimal personal property coverage since I would have virtually nothing in the place. But after talking to a furniture rental place I was told I needed a policy of at least $25k. I called Geico and asked them to tell me the difference in premium if I increased from $1000 to $25000. The woman on the phone seemed confused and said my premium was decreasing and put me on hold. A few minutes later she confirmed that it would go down about 6%. I agreed to the new terms and price. Nothing else changed regarding my policy which I've confirmed.

Is that normal? On the proof of insurance it said I got a discount for multiple reasons with one of them being "good payer" despite me never having paid a single premium yet. The only thing I can think of is that when you make adjustments it reevaluates everything and when calculating how long I've been an on-time payer it got a negative number and didn't handle that case properly. Or $1000 policies tend to be held by problematic clients while $25k is more the norm.

    Snail Mail Scam?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 04:48 PM PDT

    I hope I'm in the right place, I received a postcard via snail mail today that claims to be a 'Opt-In" for a class action suit involving "Premera Blue Cross". A couple of the things that make it smell funny;

*1- It's a postcard, with no return envelope. They want a person to fill it out answering possibly abusable information. such as "Paypal acct#" or "eCheck" or "Venmo" and Email address.

*2- As far as I know ... I have no memory of having any dealings with "Premera" or claiming any mistreatment on their part.

I don't know. After typing it out ... it doesn't seem as fishy as I first thought. I'm just curious if anyone has heard of this or a similar scam going around. Thanks for your time and any insights you may have.

My liability for 19 year old son driving friends car

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 05:17 AM PDT

My 19 year old son was recently in a minor car accident with a second vehicle while driving a friends car. He has a valid drivers licence but we have never added him to our insurance for a variety of reasons (mostly being a knucklehead) The only times he has ever driven our cars without either myself or my wife with him are the times he took them without our permission.

We have received a notice from our insurance (State Farm) that a claim has been made against him. What is our responsibilty/liability for this?

Are our premiums going to go up because if this?

    Thanks in advance

EX Wife Use of Benefits for Shared Children

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 12:18 PM PDT

I'm the primary insurance holder for myself, my husband and step children. Their mother (my husbands ex wife) takes the children to the emergency room any time they cough. When the doctors tell her nothing is wrong she takes them to another ER, sometimes several times in a week. She's now leaving us financially responsible for anything insurance doesn't cover. The only way we knew she made us responsible is because we received phone calls that the medical bills weren't paid. Normally she has them call her and send the bills to her house so we never know they went unpaid until they hit my husbands credit report.

Since I'm the primary on the insurance, is it possible to block her from using the insurance for the kids without our permission? She has the ability to financially destroy us if not. We can't and don't want to drop the kids off the insurance entirely as she refuses and won't ever provide insurance for them, but her excessive overuse is becoming unmanageable. Is there anything we can do?

Is there a specific reason for the separation of Health, Dental, Vision, and Life insurance?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:15 PM PDT

As a 27 year old who's job does not include benefits, and in a state with no financial assistance on the marketplace - it's honestly seeming like my options are 1) live happily and die young, or 2) live out of a tent, but with proper coverage

Scraped a parked car, paid person out of pocket for the damages. Worried about future repercussions.

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 03:08 PM PDT

    Hello,

Last week I was pulling into a parking spot and accidentally accelerated into the bumper of a parked car. The owner luckily was walking right out of the office directly in front.

This was my first time in an instance like this and I was very nervous. We exchanged information and took pictures. I gave my insurance, license, name and number. From them I only got their name and number.

As we were exchanging we decided that since the damage was not too severe that I would pay for the damage out of pocket and not get insurance involved. They said they would go to a shop to get an estimate and let me know.

Today they were able to get me the cost, around 1000, and they will go in to have it fixed a few days later. I agreed to pay and sent the payment via a mobile payment app. I have proof of payment to this person. I asked for a copy of the receipt once the work was complete and they complied.

Now a week later and I still do not have the receipt or response.

I am afraid this person will put in a claim, is my texts and proof of the money transfer enough proof I fixed their car? I made sure to verify the cost and I have pictures of the damage. I'm worried they might turn around and try to put in a claim - could show that I already paid for the damage? I have the texts and receipt of the money transfer. I'm dumb I know - This was my first accident so I know there was a lot I should and should not have done at the time but forgot to. Any info is much appreciated, thank you!

Health insurance seem to put up a fight on MRI charges

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:40 AM PDT

We have had this happen twice.

First time my wife was in the hospital for four days with a MRSA infection in the cartledge of her nose. IV antibiotics for a few weeks. The day after she got out of the hospital the infectious disease doc wanted an mri because he was concerned the abscess was going into he head toward he brain. We got the mri scheduled but the insurance company said they were going to deny the claim. We eventually got that straightened out but it delayed the mri for a day. Just one note, the person I spoke to on the phone at the insurance com0any said it was denied because she was released from the hospital and was therefore getting better and doesn't need an mri.

I was recently referred to a specialist by my pcp. The special is has scheduled me for an MRI. The insurance company (same one) said they were not going to pay. I have contacted the specialist. I know they will have to argue with the insurance company.

My questions... This seems like a strategy by the insurance company to resist payouts even when all the right things have been done by the pcp and specialist.

Doesn't this in essence constitute practicing medicine without a license?

I considered filing a complaint with the state insurance commissioner but have not because I am concerned about hurting myself, the company I work for or the others in my group. I am concerned about revenge from the insurance company.

Other than have my specialist argue with the insurance company about my mri what can be done about the larger issue of the insurance company discouraging testing that was prescribed and covered by their rules?

2 1/2 year old accidents removal from record?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 11:11 AM PDT

Hi all, I had two at fault accidents. One 2 years and 10 months ago & one 2 years and 7 months ago. Is there anyway to get them removed or disregarded when applying for car insurance? I'd love to finance a new car because of my new job position but it's not worth it when I'm being quoted $560-600 for insurance.

Is there anything I can do? I'm currently driving an owned 2008 Dodge Avenger in Florida and my insurance is $380 a month. 22 years old.

Thank you for all the help.

how does medicare/medi-cal affect a settlement

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 10:35 AM PDT

didn't have health insurance when I turned 18, & never bothered getting any until I had a minor incident which required stitches (cut my finger very deep, ugh). anyways went to the ER and told them I didn't have insurance and nurse gave me "emergency medicare/medi-cal"? (I'm really not sure what it was called, sorry, but I remember he said it was some kind of emergency coverage). Anyways, signed whatever that was, got my stitches, didn't have a bill and went about my way. Couple of months later and I got a good paying job with insurance and have had the same job since (8 yrs this year),. Fast forward. Got rear-ended 3.5 months ago by drunk driver. police responded, got a report, went to the ER (stitches again for busted lip) been going to physical therapy for back pain from accident. the other party's insurance is accepting liability and I'm getting a settlement. my private insurance paid for the ER visit resulting from the accident and subsequent physical therapies and I know that I pay them back what they paid from the settlement. my question is do I have to payback the medicare/medical for the previous er visit for stitches when I was younger? if so, do I just cut them (Medicare/medi-cal) a check or the insurance disburses it to them automatically? or no because that wasn't related to the car accident? this is all in California.

    Car Insurance Questions

    Posted: 28 Sep 2019 09:24 AM PDT

    Hey Insurance Redditors!

I have three questions about car insurance.

    I live in New York

    1. If I get issued a ticket for speeding in 2016, but my court hearing is in 2020 and I am found guilty, will my insurance increase even though it was 4 years difference?

    2. How long does a traffic ticket last on my insurance record before the prices are brought down again? And does this duration start from when I was first cited, or found guilty years later?

    3. How long does it normally take for insurance premiums to decrease after increasing due to tickets / accidents?

    Thank you in advanced.
