What business did you start to leave / supplement your full time income? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 05:05 AM PDT Interested to hear what online / offline businesses people started whilst working full time. I currently make $150k AUD at my full time job but am keen to start working on a business that will initially supplement (and later replace) my full time job. I work in digital marketing, so most interested in online businesses, but open to everything - particularly how you got into it (new business or existing business that you bought). Thanks! Who else suffers from shiny object syndrome? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 12:43 PM PDT I have wanted to start a business ever since I graduated high school. I get an idea and start working on it, but then shortly lose motivation when I don't see results and I move on to a different idea. Or I will have multiple ideas I want to do at once but cannot find the time to do that so I kind of just half ass them and see no success. Do any of you suffer from this same problem and how did you get past it? [link] [comments] |
Maintaining Discretion - (Stop being a blabber-mouth) Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:09 AM PDT Over the last 10 years of having my own business, I've got this one nagging thing in the back of my head that bugs me. Often when I'm speaking to a business acquaintance, client or supplier, I feel like throughout the conversation, I say too much. I walk away from the conversation wishing I'd kept my mouth shut about this or that. Some detail about the business, a piece of gossip about a competitor, whatever... Ever since I was young, I've always felt I have to prove myself. To friends family and complete strangers. Now that's carried over into my business. It's not a major issue, but something that nags me. I admire those who play their cards close to their chest. Anyone know what I mean? [link] [comments] |
$103,087 Unsold Inventory What Would You Do? Posted: 24 Aug 2019 06:56 PM PDT I recently did a inventory check and have $103,087.90 of unsold inventory. While that number in cash would seem pretty good it reminds me more of all the failings and shortcomings. I had started dabbling in online sales and supplying products to companies over the last few years. I sold my place 2 years ago and took almost 100% of the funds and put them in business. It was probably the biggest mistake of my life. I did not immediately put all the money in products but rather as I sold and bought I kept putting money in more products. Some of the products were selling too slowly and I was not recovering the money as I wanted. I did list on the usual outlets such as ebay, amazon etc but this has not amounted to many sales $300-$400 a month because it would take a long time to sell them. At the same time this was happening my Social media marketing business took a hit when instagram did numerous updates over the last few months. I feel like I am in a really bad position with an exorbitant amount of stress. Looking back I wish I had not sold my place to invest in business because in the end this lead to me not having a place. I had ofcourse thought I would be able to get rid of the inventory but it undersold what I had perceived. I do feel unmotivated, stressed and unhappy. I have had my successes in business but this was a huge hit back to back. I feel selling a solid place such as real estate to take such a risk was not worth it in the end. I would ofcourse not be saying this if the risk had payed off but in my case it didn't. I have also looked into liquidation places but they were offering 4-7% of the entire cost and I couldn't do that. As a last resort I thought to turn to the people of reddit for advice. These are the products I have. What would your recommendations be to try to sell these products https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1oVQO4mkHButPDkj5cvNkBogNUtt2tJbGiknAUZx7Cxg/edit?usp=sharing [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Aug 2019 05:15 AM PDT All said in the title. I can get impressions and even a few post interactions (say %20 of impressions are interactions), but no link clicks. Not sure if I'm headed in the right direction or not? [link] [comments] |
Attention all life improving entrepreneurs! Posted: 25 Aug 2019 07:01 AM PDT Just came across a very interesting offer to all life-improving - an opportunity to get 4 months of free digital marketing. From what I can tell, seems super legit, but you be the judge: https://lp.ranky.co/ [link] [comments] |
Making money through movie related instagram page Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:04 AM PDT I'm currently running an instagram account that focuses on movie facts - so basically posting an interesting movie fact once a day. It's steadily growing and I'm starting to think about ways of making some extra bucks out of it. I'm thinking about creating a blog where I would review new movies - making some bucks from banners there. What other (better ways) are there, any ideas? [link] [comments] |

How did you get your original product built? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:24 PM PDT I have CAD designs and 3d model designs, but am struggling to find a reasonable option to get the product built. The product is designed to be made of wood. Is a cnc machine necessary? Would love some advice if anyone has went down this path [link] [comments] |

How do I build a pricing strategy for an untapped market? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:07 PM PDT Next week I launch my listing site to help people (primarily students) sell their housing leases. I've done the market research which validates the issue, however the research we did on pricing is all over the place, which brings me to my main question. How do I build my initial pricing structure? I understand I'll have to pivot with what works and doesn't, but has anyone had experience initially pricing something out in a market with no similar products? My current plan is to launch as a free listing service for a limited time in order to grow a userbase, and once I do I plan on implementing a very low cost listing fee. I understand that success rates play a huge part in whether people are willing to pay or not, however I have had mentors tell me to price high and adjust accordingly, and others say that if I price too low I'll be stuck in a non-profitable zone. I understand there's so many variables and I'm more than willing to share more info, I just need to know how to tackle this issue or whether or not it even matters which route I start off with. Luckily I will have a revolving door set of users based on my research so this does offer some opportunity to pivot pricing... Any help is appreciated! Even if you end up being devils advocate. Anyone ever started a multinational? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 01:11 PM PDT OK so I'm in the process of moving to Germany. In the instance that I cannot find a traditional job, I'm thinking of leveraging my industry experience into starting a consulting firm. I'm a US/Italian Dual Citizen living in the US and trying to figure out whether I should incorporate in the US before I move (and create a "branch" in Germany, or if I should just incorporate the whole thing in Germany. I doubt there are many here who have been in the situation but I guess my question boils down to, in general is it better to incorporate in the US if you're going to be foreign based? My intentions are to consult with EU and US based companies if that helps. Edit: Downvotes? What's wrong with my question here? [link] [comments] |
How can we be different and find customers that want to work with us when competition is good? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 11:46 AM PDT Hey guys! [link] [comments] |
Where to work & negotiating an offer with a startup? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 11:45 AM PDT Sorry if this isn't the best sub for this. r/startups seems more for strategy/operations advice, less so career-advice. I graduated last December with CS but spent the last 8 months becoming a full-stack dev so I could do general freelancing and build a skill set that would help me bootstrap MVP's for myself and for other startups. I'm happy with where I'm at now, but I've hit my max living at home and I need some advice on my next move. I have an offer (gig #1) at a startup that I'm passionate about. They just finished a program with an accelerator (idk if I can post financial details about that or if it's relevant) and they're located in a city that I'm indifferent about. Alternatively, I was considering leasing my own place in a city I'd much rather live in, and working at a much earlier stage startup (gig #2, still developing an MVP) but their CEO has a super solid entrepreneurial portfolio and his new business is one that I think could do extremely well, but I'm less passionate about it. The other catch is that the place I have an offer with (gig #1) will provide housing and the founders and I would live basically next door in the same apartment building— which sounds pretty cool to me, but i have to factor their provided housing into my compensation (or lack thereof). The gig is a 4 month "fellowship" but they also offered an 8 month term (if I wanted to do the spring fellowship as well, or after the first term I could decide if I wanted to do full time). The team for gig #2 would be remote. Gig #1 says they'll provide a monthly stipend but doesn't know how much yet. Gig #2 I haven't asked yet, but I know they still have a lot of equity they're willing to shell for a technical cofounder. Basically I'm wondering: how (if at all) do you negotiate terms with an early stage startup? I know money is tight and I don't want to take a wage that would hurt their company's prospects. But I also don't want to be paid nothing and get 0.5% equity. Between their 4 founders they still own 94% of the company and only have 1 self-trained technical founder (granted he built their entire platform himself), if that's relevant. Also, they're basically building a second platform now for an entire new clientele so it's not like I'm coming along just to polish things up. TL;DR I guess the advice I'm really looking for is, for gig #1 where they provide housing, what's a reasonable request for terms of employment? Is it reasonable to want more than 1% equity, and how long (or what milestones) would be reasonable for me to vest a reasonable amount of equity? They don't have any idea what my monthly stipend will be, though they have said there'll be one. I wouldn't care as much about monetary compensation if I were getting equity, but there's not really mention of it. [link] [comments] |
Idea Value Bomb Series. Episode 1 Posted: 25 Aug 2019 02:51 AM PDT I've seen a lot of posts asking for help in finding the right ideas or projects. I have also seen a lot of people telling that an idea for your next project(or side project) may arise from a personal problem. However, its not always so. I, for one, have a habit of finding 'gaps' which I can then build a business(or a small business/side project on). Somehow, I don't have the time to execute all of these. If you are like me, you will enjoy reading some of these ideas. These are different from your typical -'fill surveys', 'create a blog' type of ideas - and hopefully should be useful. This is the first one of the value bomb series I'd like to write about ! You can just pick up any of these which you like (and thank me later if you get successful). What are your ideas for the next project, that you don't have time to pick up ? -----------------------------------------
Don't forget donating ideas in comments. Who knows, your idea my see life as well. I write about women building profitable businesses. Happy to chat about validating any ideas that you may have :) Best Misha [link] [comments] |
Any ideas on how to monetize in Instagram Car related niche? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 11:31 AM PDT I have around 5K followers right now, i plan to try and start trying to earn money when i hit 20k followers. I believe 99% of my followers are very authentic, no bots involved and as i said i feel like 99% of them are interested in cars. With 5k followers i get anywhere from 400 to 1200 likes per post, depends from time of the day and hashtags. I post 2 times a day and i post few stories i try to engage with my audience as much as i can as well. I have some ideas on how to monetize, but i feel there are better ways you guys would know about, since i'm really just a noobie. Classic shoutouts would work, but i feel like it's limited in this niche. Selling my own stuff, but again i feel like car T-shirts or phone cases with cars on them or car related quotes won't sell really well with my audince Should i try to contact people and if so who should i contact for shoutouts, i'm not gonna get sponsored by a company selling cars so who could i be sponsored by? I'm sorry if these are stupid questions, but i would like some help, thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
What to do with an email list of almost 10,000. Posted: 25 Aug 2019 11:28 AM PDT So recently I've realized that over the past 10 years or so I've grown my email list from nothing to around 10,000. We run a liquidation business so we only use the emails to notify people of upcoming liquidation events. Is there another way to monetize this list? The list has a lot of industry specific people on it but also people from every walk of life not in the industry. Just trying to see what others have used their mailing list for. I don't have much background in marketing so it is just recently occurring to me that I'm probably missing out by not using this list to its full potential. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Productivity, focus and motivation. Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:59 AM PDT I'm Just going to cut right to the chase: Anyone take nootropics or other smart drugs to plough through their workload? I've recently decided to take this seriously after being surrounded by some of the most successful entrepreneurs that say they keep these as part of their toolkits. I wonder how many people actively consume these kinds of products to "keep up"? [link] [comments] |
Where to Post a Video that Will Go Viral? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:59 AM PDT I have a crazy video that will likely go viral. I can take on my website logo/URL to it... and post it somewhere. But I don't have a huge social media presence - so I'm wondering if there are places to post videos that will go viral? (And can I tack my logo/URL onto it when I post it there?) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:52 AM PDT Regarding the title it feels like self-promotion is regarded as something bad. It almost seems as when somebody is telling others about something that will likely make others life better but is not free, then it is somehow a bad thing. It seems the root cause is, at least partly, due people whose most important purpose is to merely make money and not caring as to by what ways it is being done, as long as it is fast/certain. Like not caring if they have to kill another person for it, if that could provide a way to bring it about, as one of the more extreme examples. It means they don't care about the people who buy, they just want to get their money. It seems that the Internet is full of such scum on Earth who just wants money and not caring about other people, not wanting to make our life better through a vastly better product, but wanting to make only ones own or close ones life better with the possession of having more money to do with. And you know, to this post here, potentially a lot of people here, are in fact those horrible people who are going to tell I am the worst person on earth for saying such and should kill myself right now. They are marketers, they largely focusing on making deals, like, selling anything as long as it is legal and it sells easy and fast. And I mean, selling is important, and we want to sell fast and easy, but good heart is more important. Building dramatically better products through technology to make own life and others life to whom you are selling, a lot better, is what is the real great thing for what I like entrepreneurs very much. Running/owning own business has not necessarily a lot to do with entrepreneurship. These days, it seems there are online marketers running around labeling themselves as entrepreneurs. The real meaning is being spoiled. You follow the word, and what you get is marketer. Those who run a business to merely make some bucks, I passionately dislike that particular part inside them, although I'd love them if they'd come around to the light side with those parts. Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:42 AM PDT Hello! I am an early childhood educator who, due to some life-altering experiences, needs to shift careers and work from home. I've had very small side businesses since I was 14 years old, and 10 years ago developed an aromatherapy company and successfully sold it. But I still don't know what I'm doing. I have recently been slowly developing another small business hand making aromatherapy products in my in-home studio (occasionally eliciting the help of my teens) as well as creating tourist art pieces like patches/ stickers/ postcards for the local gift shops. Additionally, I buy crystals and gemstones from wholesalers and resell them (I use crystals in my aromatherapy products so I figured I might as well offer those as well, as they compliment each other). Due to the intense series of unfortunate events in my life recently, I have not been able to focus much on developing this business properly or marketing it effectively. However, I am now ready to get more serious. From the market research I've done, the products that I have developed seem to be quite easy to sell and I already have return customers, people posting about it on their ig accounts and retailers eager to carry my collections. So what I'm wondering is, how do I take this to the next level? From $600/ month to $6000/ month? Do I hire a rep to find more retail outlets to sell through or focus primarily on online sales so I don't have to take the gauge of wholesale prices? Or both equally? How do I compensate the rep? Commission? And which online store should I use? Shoppify? If I have shoppify do I also need a website? Which online platforms are best to use? I only have so much time in my day and want to use my screen time as efficiently as possible. Facebook has been my main platform and I've been very happy with the results. I think Instagram has only ever landed me like one sale! But I haven't put a lot of effort into it- I only have 500 followers. Maybe I should revamp that.. I'm wondering what else.. Etsy/amazon/Pinterest.. there are probably all sorts I don't know about. What's the best use of my online time? Going from preschool teaching/ supervising to business is a bit of a leap. There's so much to learn. Ideally, I'd love to have the freedom to focus on my artistic creations and have someone else take care of getting the products out there. I do enjoy social media marketing , but dislike going to retail outlets and pitching my products. I need help with that. I appreciate any kindly advice from you more experienced entrepreneurs, including resources (Canadian) and books/podcasts/ youtubers etc. to point me in the right direction. Thank you! 🙏🙏💕💕 [link] [comments] |
Can I sell an Instagram account? Posted: 25 Aug 2019 09:13 AM PDT Would it be possible for me to sell an Instagram account? I have one in the travel niche with 4,500 followers, and I'm not interested in growing it anymore. So, instead of selling shout outs and stuff like that, is there a good way for me to just outright sell it someone else? [link] [comments] |
