US Citizen died abroad in France - travel insurance is not being helpful

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 11:00 AM PDT

    Hi All,

A person (US Citizen) was travelling abroad and passed away in their sleep on a Viking cruise ship off the coast of France. The person's daughter was on the ship with her mom when her mom passed away. (I will call them mom and daughter)

Both mom and daughter had travel insurance through a company called Trip Mate. Daughter has filed a claim with Trip Mate to have mom cremated in France and the ashes brought back to the US. Trip mate has engaged a company called "On Call" to resolve the case. (Not sure of their relationship).

Its been three weeks of absurd ridiculousness.... On Call is virtually no help. Every contact with them is a new person who has no knowledge of the case or progress in the process. 100+ phone calls, emails, and other contacts and there seems to be little progress.... It seems as if every time we take a step forward with a document, an approval, or other positive step, Trip Mate counters the progress with a new requirement.

Is there any oversite of On Call or Trip Mate? Numerous managers, have been called in but it seems like we are still no further along in getting "Mom"s remains back to the states.

"mom" can't be the first person to die abroad in France - but it seems that TripMate/OnCall has absolutely no idea what they are doing - and between their undocumented and frequently shifting process, and dealing with the french government, there is no way to actually bring the remains back short of hiring a law firm in france...

Help......how do we get someone who can drive this to resolution.

    EDIT:

The latest roadblock -about three weeks into the process, Trip Mate has decided they now need an official cause of death before they can do anything. Of course none of the paperwork to date includes this. We have no idea how to get the French Government to issue an official cause of death for a senior citizen that died in her sleep on a cruise....

Is this a good time to engage the press? Chicago woman's remains stuck in morgue in France as Insurance company torments family?

Also next step is complaint to insurance commissioner- It seems cruel to suddenly need an official cause of death three weeks into the process... Nothing has changed, how did they suddenly come up with this request now....

If I’m under my dads car insurance, can my premiums be affected?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:50 PM PDT

I'm technically under my dads car insurance. He is the "head" on the plan, but I still have my own account under him. The point of this was because I'm 19 with a sports car and male, and was quoted over $400 a month for insurance. I save over $100 on his plan.

The thing is, he has a terrible driving record. Multiple speeding tickets, traffic violations, etc. He most recently got a DUI, and I'm confident that when the case is said and done it'll at least be a reckless on his record.

You'd be amazed to know that I'm still saving money under his plan lol, with my pretty much spotless record. But could this make MY insurance go up? If I wanted to separate from his plan would my premium be affected still (if the answer is yes)?

Allstate is asking for a credit card information over email and phone.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 09:39 PM PDT

I recently started shopping around for renters insurance and I got a call today from a local Allstate agency. The representative that called me saved me over $50 from the price I got from the online quote and I'm very tempted but also very skeptical since he kept pressuring me to pay right then and there and for him to take my card and bank information over the phone with no option to do it online. He confirmed all the information that I put on the online quote including the fake email and even the number checked out to be the one for the local agency. Is this normal and I'm just being paranoid? Thank you

Obtaining records for medical insurance in California

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 11:32 PM PDT

I know that in California, there are laws dictating the availability of medical records from physicians. However I have not been able to find anything about getting records from an insurance company.

The first and only treatment that has helped my wife's chronic back pain is being denied by our insurance provider. It has been appealed up to the highest internal level, where the reviewing doctor in a peer to peer review stated that they would not approve it, although he has performed the procedure frequently and believes my wife is a perfect candidate.

I want to get the records, including notes if possible, of this denial. It will better help me equip myself for a third party review of the care.

    Lapse of Coverage in CA?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 02:14 AM PDT

Currently abroad with mail being held and notifications buried in e-mail spam. Found out my Farmers auto insurance expired due to missed payment by 4th Aug. Insurance company said there would be a lapse of coverage fee.

    1) Read online CA doesn't have this and/or it's no big deal...is this correct?

    2) I'm only a few days over, can they just switch to a late payment fee?

Please and thank you for advice & answers.

Would the condition of my car void my driving insurance?

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 01:21 AM PDT

I was in a car accident where I was T-boned on the passenger side of my vehicle. It was my fault and since I don't have fully comprehensive insurance, the damage to my car was not covered so I didn't get it fixed. My car still drives and there is no issue in it's performance. The damage is at the pillar in between the two passenger doors, and has hit the bottom of the car only very slightly causing a dent. I have heard that because it hit the body of the car it is technically a write off. I have taken my car for a service since the accident and they haven't said anything about the damage.

My worry is that if I am in another accident, my insurance won't cover the damage for the other vehicle because of the condition of my car?

Found out I have a heart condition while abroad in Malaysia

    Posted: 07 Aug 2019 12:45 AM PDT

Hi I'm a 22 year old backpacking southeast Asia the past 3 or so months and found out I have a heart condition today. I've been feeling strangely dizzy for a bit over a month and brushed it off as anxiety at first until it was frequent enough I went to get checked out. I had no prior issues back home in the US. The medicals bills I'm incurring right now are not enormous but for a budget traveller it adds up. I'm wondering if a heart condition qualifies as a preexisting condition for travel insurance companies? I want to make sure my claims get accepted. I have Allianz OneTrip Premier. Pls advise

Insurance claim for a tap in traffic, is she claiming too much?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 04:55 PM PDT

A year ago I was driving about 15 mph on the freeway in traffic when the lady in front of me slammed her breaks and I slammed mine but still tapped her.

From what i saw when we got out of the car there wasn't really damage. She had shared with me she had been in an accident a week ago and was mad that she got into one.

We exchanged info and then months later my insurance reached out to me about the claim she submitted. Apparently she is saying 4k for damage underneath the bumper and 7k for "whip lash" she went to urgent care not the hospital.

Can I fight this? These are ridiculous amounts to claim for a tap in traffic right?

    Need advice!!

Problem is, I just realized that my registration tags have expired. My question is, is this gonna be a problem for me with regards to the claim? I can postpone tomorrow's appointment till I get the fixed.

How to pass a stalled car in a blind curve?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 10:46 PM PDT

Don't know if this is the right place, but theoretically on a 1 lane mountain road curving hard right with an oncoming lane with a cliff on the right, and a stalled car/truck is stalled blocking the lane, what's the best way to pass? Have the stranded driver go down the road a little to signal to oncoming cars? Whose fault will it be if you end up in a head-on collision trying to pass? This is assuming traffic behind the stalled car need to pass just to let the tow truck or whatever come help.

Husband's beater car got damaged by a kid driving a rental- kid wants to take the car to his own mechanic and not involve insurance, which we are fine with but we are wondering if we've done everything we need to do to be aboveboard ourselves.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 02:57 PM PDT

Hi all, this is a weird one. (We're in Massachusetts, btw).

My husband's car (a $2k beater with liability only, our car is not the issue) got backed into by a kid driving a rental in his older brother's name. It is unclear to us whether the kid was supposed to be driving the rental.

My husband's car is real banged up but as driveable as it ever was. We don't have any intention of making a claim or getting anything on it fixed. My husband called our insurance to ask for guidance, informed them what had happened, said in his opinion the fault was 50/50 but that he didn't want to file a claim, merely to inform them it had happened in case of liability issues. He did not call the police at the scene and is deeeeply resistant to talking to any cops about anything ever. Like I think if our house was being robbed he wouldnt call the cops. It's a thing.

The kid wants to take the rental car to his own mechanic rather than going to enterprise. I have no idea how that's going to work out for him. Apparently he is petrified of his brother who is a "very scary guy" and wants to avoid getting in trouble with enterprise or the brother. I think this is not really our problem?

As far as I can tell, we have pretty much done what we need to do. We notified our insurance and we aren't seeking anything. I assume that when the car goes back to enterprise he'll either tell them the whole story in which case enterprise can contact our insurance or he'll lie in which case we won't be involved anyway.

My husband, of course, is convinced that the scary brother is going to show up and torch our house, but I can't really see that happening. And if it does, it'll be a different insurance issue.

What happens if my tenant burns down his house?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 02:48 PM PDT

We own a property in northern BC. Our tenant (who we inherited from previous owners) smokes inside their house. They also drink quite a bit, to the point of passing out.

The other day they started cooking and passed out and my husband noticed smoke billowing out of his house and went down and woke him up. The smoke alarm did not wake him.

What happens if they pass out while smoking and burn our rental property down? Does our insurance still cover that? How do we protect ourselves and our property?

What kind of insurance do I need to protect myself from lawsuits from a rental property?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:10 AM PDT

I own a rental property, but don't need coverage for damage to the property, since I can handle that myself.

What I need is coverage that would protect me in case the tenant gets injured (falls down the stairs, slips on ice, etc.) and sues me.

I'm not really sure what I should be looking for.

    edit

Thank you for all the answers. I'm a little less confused than before, but will go talk to a couple of agents.

I have one who handles my homeowners/auto/umbrella, etc. but he didn't seem to have any significant advice and just asked me what I wanted.

I think I'll talk to the agent that handles my business liability, since that seems to be closer to what I'm looking for.

NC Teachers losing access to hospitals

How much time to get vehicle repaired after accident?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 07:25 PM PDT

    The accident occurred in Florida.

The other driver's insurance company is going to be paying for my car repairs.

How much time do I have to get my vehicle repaired? Is there a time limit?

They also want me to go to the collision shop of their choosing for an initial estimate, but I can get it repaired wherever I would like after.

Is this the case, or can I get an estimate at a collision shop I trust more?

I'm confused and stressed, idk who or what to believe. I'm I just paranoid?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:40 PM PDT

So my coworker told me that if you had medi-cal at one point but no longer qualify for it, it will be removed. If you also were receiving it when you weren't supposed to, you may have to pay them back for everything during that time.

However I was always told from others that medi-cal has a system in place to auto revaluate a person income and will notify and kick them from the program. Which then the person would have to then find their own insurance. Is this not the case?

I had got medical when I had graduated from HS from when I worked at a retail job getting paid little money, and after a while I began to work at another jobs that paid me more money. My parents and older sibling told me that I may lose my medi-cal once they see ive been having more income.

They told me that from their experience medi-cal will automatically do this on their own and let me know.

However back in February of this year I received a renewal letter to report my income. So I did, and sent the information they asked for.

when I first got medi-cal I was making 13k-16k a year, but that's was 3 years ago. Now I've been making more ~20-27k for 2 and half years, and I still received medi-cal. I'm a single person btw.

My co-worker told me I may have been receiving medi-cal when I wasn't supposed to and that I may have to pay them back. Which could be expensive.

I'm highly concerned because I just had a motorcycle accident 2 months ago that medi-cal covered while they were still reviewing my renewal income report.

If my friend is right what do I do? If I'd known I wasn't supposed to be on it then I would have gotten my own insurance. But literally everyone else has told me that medi-cal reviews account and would notify me if I no longer qualify.

I called them and asked because I was concerned about owing them money for when I should not have been insured And if I have to pay back my medical bills.

They told me no, that I won't have to pay them back and that they would just kick me off the program and I will have to find a plan through covered ca. They want me to give them a current pay stub and a written letter of when I stopped working at my retail job. Which was back in 2016.

So here I am confused and anxious. Idk who to believe, I would like to believe the medi-cal worker as they would know best but my coworker has me shaken with anxiety and stress.

Will I get bills from medi-cal for the time I was unaware I didn't qualify for it but had it and used it in a emergency? My hospital bills were about 8k I think.

I'm so lost I've never had to deal with anything like this before. I always try to be responsible and on top of stuff I've never had any debt because of it. But now I'm terrified I'm going to. If I had known and was I given bad advise from my family? If so I would have gotten my own insurance if I knew better, but they told me that they automatically review my qualifications. IDK WHO TO BELIEVE...

Am I just terrifying myself and worried about nothing or should I just jump off from the face of the Earth?

    TLDR:

My coworker said I have to payback medi-cal for the years I wasn't qualified for it.

My family told that they'd automatically know and tell me if I no longer qualify for it.

Medi-cal said that no I won't need to pay them back even tho I wasn't qualified at the time and I'd just be removed.

    Idk who to believe...

I was hit by another vehicle that swerved to avoid hitting someone on a bicycle. Their insurance is telling me the claim is under review with no timeline. What should I do?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 08:39 AM PDT

All of this happened over three weeks ago and has left me without a car. Unfortunately, do to some financial issues, I only had liability insurance (not ideal, I totally understand) so my insurance policy can't help me. The driver who hit my car has full coverage, and the police report shows clearly that he did swerve into me.

His insurance company (which is actually the same company as mine) is telling me that the claim is "under review" due to the fact that the person crossing illegally on his bicycle is at fault and they cannot give me a timeline for when things will move forward.

Am I stuck just waiting it out? Is there anything that I can do to speed up this process?

Edit: this is in California, USA

    Diminished Value

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 11:05 AM PDT

Hello, I was involved in a collision in Oklahoma. The driver behind me hit me and was then hit by a runaway driver. The driver who hid me is only accepting 50% of the damages. My insurance is in trying to get them to accept more but so far nothing has been changed. The claim originated in November and I was holding off on the claim due to lengthy repair process and trying to have the liability moved to a higher percentage. At this point is it worth trying to wait on the claim for the higher amount or just try to settle with their insurance directly.

Filing car insurance claim for teen driver

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 02:54 PM PDT

Our teenager banged up the side of our car a bit. Are there downsides to filing an insurance claim besides the obvious likely increase in insurance as a result? Will this stay on his record and make it harder for him to get insurance down the road? Damage is about $3,500, no one else involved. (NC)

    Partial Deck Collapse - NC

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 06:03 AM PDT

As the title indicates, our deck partially collapsed about a week ago. Luckily, no one was injured. I filed a claim, and it appears that its going to be denied because the house didn't fall onto the deck, which is apparently required for coverage. The adjuster stated he believes the collapse was caused by 1) incorrect wooden beams beings used in the construction, which weren't strong enough to hold the composite boards that were used, 2) the support beams rotting, and 3) improper, un-galvanized fasteners being used during construction.

I was under the impression that the insurance company inspected a property before agreeing to insure it, but the adjuster indicated, it was really just a "cursory" review which wouldn't have uncovered any problems such as these. Is this true?

The house was bought about 6 years ago, and I'm not sure when the deck was actually built, or by whom. How do I go about finding out who built the deck? I'm just at a little bit of a loss here as to what my options are. I can't really afford to replace the whole deck, but I don't see any alternatives, as the rest of the deck was is probably going to have similar problems if faulty materials were in fact used. Do I need to talk to an attorney? Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

    Car hit while turning around

    Posted: 06 Aug 2019 10:46 AM PDT

Hi all. My neighbor hit the front of my vehicle today. I was parked on my street (a two lane neighborhood with parking on both sides). I needed to turn around to go the opposite direction. Our driveways were blocked so I turned around in the street (three point turn). My neighbor pulled over on the other side, and pulled up several car lengths. I proceeded to turn around, about four car lengths behind him. He decided he was too far away from his house, so he put his car in reverse, while looking at his phone and hit the accelerator and flew backwards. He didn't even look back to check if a car was there. I honked my horn because I was behind him, bit he ended up creaming my driver's side bumper and front fender at about 20 mph. Who is at fault for this accident? Cops were not called because I was late for a final because of the accident. He gave me his info, said nothing, and left. Already reported it to his insurance. The adjuster is calling me because they are trying to determine who is more liable for the incident. How should I handle this? Should I just go through my own company and go from there. I have a full coverage policy.
