    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Aug 09, 2019

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 01:08 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Rumors are circulating that Broadcom is to buy Symantec’s enterprise business (that generated $269 million cash) for $10 billion (that would account for over 60% of Symantec’s $16 billion mcap) leaving consumer cyber safety division (that generated $1.1 billion cash)

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 10:40 PM PDT

That would imply the more profitable consumer cyber safety division (that generated $1.1 billion cash) is worth only $6 billion.

This is not a recommendation to buy or sell. Stocks are not suitable for everybody. Please do your own research.

    What ETFs do you recommend?

I sincerely want to get better at trading. What should be my next step?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 11:20 AM PDT

I'm pretty decent with my buy and hold strategy, and I can swing trade reasonably well too (except a couple of emotional slip ups). I've been actively trading for a few years now, but I am yet to try to turn it into a real source of income, and I'd like to.

I've been devoting some time every night to reading trading books, and I watch charts throughout the day. I have a job that allows me to come in around noon, so I'm thinking of trading in a simulator the next few months every morning, and see how I do (and how much I can learn).

    Any other advice?

Which small cap tech companies have the potential to be bought out in the next couple of years?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 09:36 AM PDT

There are many innovative small cap companies that are not well known. These guys are typically trying to grow into something big or wait from someone to write them a fat check for their resources. Which ones should we be keeping an eye on?

Best ways to capitalize on company ESPP programs

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 09:31 AM PDT

My company allows me to allocate up to 10% of my salary into an ESPP program where at the end of every quarter I can buy our stock at a 15% discount and there is no fixed holding period before it can be sold - typically I sell the shares within the same week as receiving them and always net at least 15% ROI so it has been a no-brainer to participate in the program.

Up to this point I've been using the ESPP earnings to pay down my student loans but now that they're practically paid off (less than $2,000 remaining), I'm looking at new ways to reinvest the ESPP since I don't really need the cash on hand.

One possible thought is saving the money up in a low-interest savings account to use to get a bigger house in 3-5 years.

Another thought is taking the earnings and reinvesting them into an S&P500 index fund once a quarter but doing this means I'll ultimately get taxed twice (which may not be a big deal).

How do you guys use your ESPP's? Is there any disadvantage in reinvesting the money into just a plain old S&P 500 ETF?

    AMRN Stock Opinion

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 11:41 AM PDT

I was wondering what the consensus is on AMRN? I have been following and holding this stock for the past few weeks and it has been on a free fall. With the additional stock offering, and now the advisory panel being brought on for approval I feel like this hold has just turned a lot riskier.

    ASUR price tanking

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 11:06 AM PDT

Yesterday at 4:30(EST) Asure Software announced their second quarterly earnings reports, just after market hours. But at around 4:00, shares took a tumble.

Then during the conference call Asure announced that they had beat expected projections and exceeded revenue goals. However, ASUR took another dip during pre-market hours this morning, and has been on the decline all day.

Does anyone else follow ASUR, or can explain how a stock can drop so drastically (>30%) in one day's time after a seemingly successful quarter? Now would seem like the best time to purchase stock, not sell it. What am I missing?

Any software other than TC2000 offer Market Scan based off custom scripts?

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 11:59 AM PDT

I really don't like TC2000's interface, it looks extremely outdated and just more confusing than it needs to be, but it has an amazing Scan feature where I can input scripts and automatically scan the entire market for stocks that fall into the scan categories.
Can any other software do that?

    Stocks investing help...

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 07:58 AM PDT

    Hi,

Please look past my ignorance but I've always been interested in investing in the stock market on a long term basis and now have decided to take action.

I'm aware that with stock trading there are lots of different online trading websites but I'm not quite sure on where I should start with long term investments. I get that it's possible to buy the stocks on the trading websites and just hold them there but for some reason that just doesn't sit well with me as it could be many years I keep them I don't trust the future of the websites enough.

So where do I begin with long term?

$PTAM was uncovered that they are entering Cannabis sector with a merger or acquisition (Report this morning).

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 07:27 AM PDT

In the Aurora Discord room someone figured out that a green energy company - Potash America Corp (OTC:PTAM) - is entering the cannabis sector with some type of acquisition of merger. The CEO literally just released a filing that shows he now owns over 80% of the outstanding common shares of the company, and they just added a new section to their website that talks about Cannabis, and actively pursuing companies to invest in. This could be very big if it pans out.

Here is the report from this morning.

    http://equitybulletin.com/2019/07/renewable-energy-company-entering-cannabis-sector-receives-rare-5-star-technical-rating-from-fnw/

I found this most interesting actually...

As of March 31, 2019, the Company announced it has no warrants outstanding with no stock options outstanding. This allows the company to move with technical perimeters, unlike most OTC companies that are restricted based on the number of warrants, stock options outstanding, and toxic notes. PTAM has a clean balance sheet, which makes it able to trade freely.

    Posted: 09 Aug 2019 07:04 AM PDT

K12 Inc. (NYSE:LRN) recently announced that students and teachers at Nevada Virtual Academy (NVVA) will begin the 2019-2020 school year on August 12, simply by turning on their computers. A full-time, accredited, online public charter school, NVVA provides a tuition-free public education for students in grades 6-12 across the state, and offers access to LRN's curriculum.

    📷

"At NVVA, our goal is to help each student unlock their potential," said English teacher Marie Wiley. "Starting on the very first day of school, we work to make a personal connection with students and their families to discover what excites them about learning, so they can succeed in the virtual classroom and wherever they want to go next."

K12 Inc. (NYSE:LRN) trumpets itself as a technology-based education company that, together with its subsidiaries, provides online curriculum, software systems, and educational services to facilitate individualized learning for students primarily in kindergarten through 12th grade in the United States and internationally.

The company also offers curriculum and technology solutions for full-time virtual and blended programs; full-time virtual programs, semester courses, and supplemental educational products; teacher training, teaching, and other academic and technology support services to public schools, school districts, private schools, charter schools, early childhood learning centers, and corporate partners. In addition, it provides FuelEd suite of offerings, such as K12 curriculum, FuelEd online courses, and FuelEd anywhere learning systems; Middlebury interactive languages; Stride; and the Big Universe literacy solution.

Further, the company operates online private schools, including The K12 International Academy, the George Washington University Online High School, and the Keystone School. Additionally, it provides access to the online lessons and curriculum through proprietary learning management system; learning kits; student computers; and management, technology, and educational services. K12 Inc. (NYSE:LRN) generated sales of $253.3M, according to information released in the company's most recent quarterly financial report. That adds up to a sequential quarter-over-quarter growth rate of -0.6% on the top line. In addition, the company has a strong balance sheet, with cash levels far exceeding current liabilities ($234M against $148.8M).

Galaxy Next Generation Inc. (OTC:GAXY) is a provider of interactive learning technology solutions that allows the presenter and participant to engage in a fully collaborative instructional environment.

    📷

The company just the signing of a letter of intent to acquire a west coast based audio company focused on creating innovative products that provide fundamental tools used for building notification systems.

According to the release, the proposed acquisition is for a combination of cash and stock. The target company generated approximately $4 million in revenue through the twelve month period ending June 30, 2019. The targets products and services allow institutions access to intercom, scheduling and notification systems they use every day with improved ease of use. It provides an open architecture solution which allows its products to be used in many existing and new environments. Intercom, PA, Bell and control solutions are easily added and integrated with its first to market open architecture design and current software model. Its products combine elements not normally found together over a common IP network, which minimizes infrastructure requirements and reduces costs by combining systems. This strategy also places it at the forefront of school safety and communication.

Gary LeCroy, Galaxys Chief Executive Officer, commented, We are excited to add innovative audio technology to our product suite, as it is something that our end customers, especially in the K-12 market segment have been demanding. This is evident by their strong revenue growth in the first half of 2019. We believe this is the first company to provide an open architecture solution that allows existing components to be used and to look beyond the space of intercom to extend capabilities of the system for other applications. The proposed acquisition also has 4 patents pending and expands our geographical footprint to the west coast. We are looking forward to advancing this transaction to the definitive stage and expect to close by the end of September.

Galaxy does not control where resellers focus their resell efforts, although generally, the K-12 education market is the largest customer base for Galaxy products – comprising nearly 90% of Galaxy's sales.

The company boasts a strong team, including its COO, who spent the majority of her young career at Mimio/Boxlight (NASDAQ:BOXL), a leader in the ed-tech and interactive display market. She performed many jobs at Mimio including, sales, federal programs director, and regional management.

With a tiny float of just 1.5 million shares, GAXY is sitting in a strong pattern with a recent hold of a key trendline and a number of clear support levels. That may demonstrate strong accumulation present under the surface of the tape.

Several indicators agree with the strong upside potential here. This is the most speculative idea in this list of compelling ed-tech stories, but it may also have the most upside room to run as a result.

Adtalem Global Education Inc (NYSE:ATGE) provides educational services worldwide. The company has been building out its brain trust, just announcing that its board of directors has unanimously elected Lisa W. Wardell, 49, as chairman of the board, effective July 16, 2019.

Adtalem Global Education Inc. has a strategic alliance with Northeastern University's D'Amore-McKim School of Business.

The stock has been on a rampage over the last few days after posting a stronger-than-expected quarter. Shares are now testing resistance at the 200-day MA.

Career Education Corp. (NASDAQ:CECO) promulgates itself as a company that operates colleges, institutions, and universities that provide education to student population in various career-oriented disciplines through online, campus based, and blended learning programs in the United States.

Investing Simulator which lets me put $5,000 into ETF every month over 36 months?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 09:21 PM PDT

    Hi All!

I read that for most investors in the stock market, it's best to just put X amount of money into an ETF consistently over a long period of time. I was planning to start with about $5,000 on the last day of each month, for 36 months. I dont' really have the time, knowledge, or experience to buy individual stocks, so I just wanted to buy ETFs such as VOO, SPY, etc. Every month for 36 months.

Before I did this, I wanted to see how I would've done in the past. Had I started in 2007 for example, how I would be doing today.

Is there any investing simulator which allows me to plug in $5000 worth of shares of particular ETF from X date to Y Date over a 36 month period to see how I would've done?

So someone please tell me why I'm wrong.

    Thanks dad Reddit!

Disclaimer: I'm 19 so I have the Stupid Question Pass.

Edit: I forgot to mention the Max.. It's not a question of if it will ever fly again, but rather how many order delays or lost orders Boeing will experience, right? Is that why it's not attractive because of lost revenue?

    SaaS & Cloud Stocks Utility

    Posted: 08 Aug 2019 09:34 PM PDT

As somewhat of a newb to this space, I was hoping if there were some main metrics to look at for SaaS Cloud companies to judge the utility they provide to their customers. It seems that there is an enormous number companies out there offering all types of cloud services (everything from password protection to data analysis/visualization) and it's hard to determine which products are "nice to have" vs. what products are or will be game changers/essential. I feel like this is may be increasingly important issue given the current economic uncertainty.
