    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Aug 01, 2019

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 01:08 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Are we witnessing the beginning of a recession?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 11:45 AM PDT

The Feds cutting the rate only to have stocks dip hard today on news of more tariffs... With a no-deal Brexit looming I feel like markets will continue to suffer well through the next little while. Thoughts?

Why do different stock info apps show different prices after hour?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 02:13 PM PDT

I always wondered why sometimes different places show different after hour price. Like today this one stock I see on tradingview is down 0.1% after hour but on Google.com is up 1.5%

    Why is this happening?

Canadian Solar (CSIQ) is up a staggering 9.26% today (+1.98).

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 08:57 AM PDT

Canadian Solar (CSIQ) is up a staggering 9.26% today!

Canadian Solar broke the $23.00 mark today for the first time in almost a month.

The whole solar sector seems to be up big today, and Canadian Solar isn't the only solar stock up 5% or more today.

    Thoughts on $ATVI earnings?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 10:39 AM PDT

They usually slump at this point of the year. I believe we will see a turnaround this holiday season with Modern Warfare.

I'm in at $55 from a while ago, just gonna keep holding.

Every page is full of ads that block the page progression and seems like the last month it's gotten much worse. It's annoying af when I'm scanning charts and reading numbers.

Any other good screeners besides TradingView?

    Invest in ERF?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 11:12 AM PDT

I've see a lot analysts are high on buying this. My question is why would I want to? It has continued to decline over years and I'm not confident in oil long term. I'm still new and don't know what I'm missing. Are the dividends that good and p/e ratio?

    Bad to have similar ETFs?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 07:11 AM PDT

I've been told don't buy similar ETFs meaning if you have IVV, don't buy VOO or SPY. They all track the S&P 500. So why is it that so many people have VOO, QQQ, VTI all in their portfolio. They pretty much all have the same top 10 companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Apple etc...

    Advice/Insight about dividends

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 02:39 PM PDT

So about a year ago I decided to try out this app that my friend posted on Facebook. I never really looked into you investing my own money before and the app made it seem really simple. I ended up buying a share of Microsoft and a few other small ones. Having no idea about stocks the small ones I bought grew even smaller. I held onto Microsoft and now it's almost doubled my money. Recently I was talking to a friend about investing and he explained to me what dividends were. He told me his best advice would be to sell the Microsoft as it's only one share, and use the profits to buy higher shares of smaller stocks that are expected to grow well and pay high percentage dividends. Then every quarter use my dividends towards buying more stock. Being new and not really knowing much I have a few questions.

    1. Is this a good/normal strategy to buying and owning stocks?

    2. If this a wise way to start investing what are some stocks that I should watch? And how can I find good dividend paying stocks?

    3. If you could give any advice to younger you when you first started to invest, what would it be?

    PYPL long-term?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 10:51 AM PDT

    Hey everyone, new investor here-

What do y'all think about Paypal as a long-term option? I bought in late at $119.24 and am considering cutting my losses after they pulled back their revenue estimates. Also somewhat worried that it wouldn't perform well in a recession if people are more conservative with their spending.

Also in general, would appreciate tips on learning about trading efficiently! :)

SBUX good time to get in?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 12:52 PM PDT

Last month around the same day I was eying SBUX but ended up going in on something else. I just realize that it's gone up quite a bit with it's strong earnings. I'm wondering if it's still a good time to get in?

ELY up appx $3.00 since time of purchase.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 08:48 AM PDT

Relatively new to the page but thought I'd give this a try. Purchased Callaway stocks when it was in a dip right around May 2018 right before attention was drawn to the stock and prices soured to the 18.60 mark is today. Do I continue to ride this out or sit tight? Don't know what more to expect as golf season is just about over but have seen trends where for some reason the month of August shows increasing dividends. Also any idea if deciding to sell what are some stocks in this price range($10-30)?

    Couple options questions.

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 05:08 AM PDT

I can't find these answers online so thought i'd ask here.

I'm doing research on options. I'm obviously not planning on buying options anytime soon, but just doing my research.

So once you buy a call option, and let's say it goes well for you and the share price jumps up and you make money.

How do you actually make money? Are you supposed to "exercise" the option and buy the x100 shares and then immediately sell the shares for profit? Or are you supposed to sell the option itself for the profit?

Also, let's say the share is not moving much but it barely hits the price point where you're hitting profit for a few minutes, then falls back down. Do you have to constantly be on your phone/computer monitoring this, or are you in the green as long as it hits the target price for even just a second?

Why are stock charts for LLL (L3 Communications) not available for time spans 1 month and under?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 11:04 AM PDT

I normally use Yahoo finance and at first I thought it was a bug when they wouldn't display the 1-month, 5-day, and 1-day charts for LLL. It always worked before. So I tried StockCharts.com and same thing: "error". Then I tried another online stock grapher... same thing. NOBODY has the stock price charts for LLL's 1-month, 5-day, or 1-day time spans. Why is that? That data didn't just disappear. Why can't any online stock chart provider give me those charts?
