Fed Cuts Rates By A Quarter Point

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:01 AM PDT

“Let me be clear: What I said was it’s not the beginning of a long series of rate cuts,” Powell said.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 05:40 PM PDT

"Let me be clear: What I said was it's not the beginning of a long series of rate cuts," Powell said. "I didn't say it's just one or anything like that. When you think about rate-cutting cycles, they go on for a long time and the committee's not seeing that. Not seeing us in that place. You would do that if you saw real economic weakness and you thought that the federal funds rate needed to be cut a lot. That's not what we're seeing."

General Electric shares jump 5% on better-than-expected earnings and improved cash flow forecast

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 04:37 AM PDT

    https://www.cnbc.com/2019/07/31/general-electric-earnings-q2-2019.html

The company raises its 2019 forecast for the closely watched metric of industrial free cash flow to a range of negative to plus $1 billion.

GE Chairman and CEO Larry Culp says the stabilizing free cash flow stems in part from "improvements" in the company's struggling power business.

The company also announces that long-time executive Jamie Miller will step down as CFO.

GE reported adjusted earnings of 17 cents a share, down 6% from the same quarter last year but above the 12 cents a share anticipated by analysts surveyed by Refinitiv. The company also reported lower revenue of $28.83 billion compared to its previous second quarter, which was also a hair above the $28.68 billion analysts surveyed by Refinitiv expected.

With interest rates being reduced, is now a good time to add to portfolio bond funds?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 08:16 PM PDT

Or does the whole inverse interest rate and bond yield price relationship generally only apply to buying/selling individuals bonds?

Activision Blizzard, Inc. (ATVI) - General Question about events such as E3 and Call of Duty Releases and Stock Price

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 04:34 AM PDT

As the title states, this is more of a general question regarding the correlation between the price of ATVI and large events such as E3 and Call of Duty trailer releases, game releases, etc.

Even though the past few CoDs have not lived up to a lot of gamers' standards, stock continues to rise because of revenue and earnings growth - MTX, loot boxes, etc. have a lot to do with both. The hype for the new Modern Warfare is beyond what I've seen in years from the community (myself included - potentially going to buy a PS4 just for this game). That being said, in your opinion do game releases and events that showcase the game (like today's Twitch multiplayer reveal), have any real effect on stock price? From the quick research I've done, stock jumps slightly during E3 (hype building), but can drop right after release date, notably after WW2's release and subsequent poor reviews.

Not looking to invest in ATVI at the moment, but I am just curious as to what others think about this and if anyone who trades ATVI, might have some information regarding this.

TL;DR: Are Call of Duty promotional events and game releases correlated to ATVI stock price?

    Thanks everyone!

    Why the sudden “drop” today?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:49 PM PDT

I'm very new to this, only been invested for about a month. I thought it was a bit odd though over the course of about a minute SandP500 dropped over a full percent. What caused that to happen so quickly?

Edit: also not just SandP, all 3 major indexes fell at the same time

Apple Services could surpass iPhone in Gross Profit in less then a year.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 06:12 AM PDT

Sounds insane. But it will likely happen very soon. Maybe by June 2020.

Look at the 3rd QTR numbers:

Services was 36% of Apple's total Gross Profit.

Services has a 64% Gross Profit Margin.

Services is growing about 12-15% YoY each quarter.

Now in addition to this Apple is adding some potentially massive new services. A new TV streaming service and Gaming services. If Apple grows services about 12-15% the next 4 quarters it will reach 40-42% of total Gross profit.

At 40-42% Gross Profit of the entire company, Services will overtake iPhone as the most profitable product. Incredible.

If growth over the following year is 8-10% then Services would be close to 50% of the entire companies Gross Profit.

Does anyone here use any of Blackrock's funds?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 09:54 AM PDT

I decided to look at Blackrock's funds and some of the returns on them are insane. So I wondered why their funds don't get any exposure on this sub? Are they to risky?

Some of the funds I looked at are: CMGSX, CMGIX, BGSIX, and BST

All of these funds are/have greatly outperformed my current portfolio's with fidelity and Vanguard funds. I realize the management fee's are higher than Vanguard/Fidelity, but the returns seem to justify the increased fee's.

Does anyone have experience investing with Blackrock funds? Why don't they get more love on this sub?

    What is "secular growth"?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 05:59 PM PDT

So I was listening to presentation and talk by semi conductors companies, and they keep mentioning the term "secular growth" in a particular business. Does anyone know what they mean by "secular growth"? How is just different from just "growth"?

    Thanks.

How can I find regional breakdowns or revenues / growth etc for MNCs?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 05:39 PM PDT

I understand that most listed companies actually own a number of local subsidiaries around the world. Let's say I am particularly interested to know how PayPal is doing in South America. Or I'd like to know which countries make a loss/profit.

I can download the PayPal 10-K from https://investor.paypal-corp.com/static-files/0679dfac-93e0-4768-b280-58eae8917612 but that doesn't show any regional information.

How can I go about it?

Another example would be if I wanted to know the P&L of Oculus, a company owned by Facebook - how could I get ahold of those numbers only?

Mix of accounts and the limitations by law

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 10:50 AM PDT

I contribute to a 401k with company match. Because of this, there's no reason to NOT participate. However I do dislike the choices and I'm so far seeing just 6% returns. Wouldn't it be reasonable to expect more? Or should I just give it time?

I have an IRA also. I'm earning over 6% now, and intend to fix the portfolio balance soon to earn more (newbie invester mistakes). I'm aiming for 10% returns (if that is even reasonable).

I'd love to contribute to the IRA- the choices are endless, and would enjoy actively managing it. But... I won't see any tax deductions. I assume I'll be taxed both when I contribute and when I withdrawal in retirement.

If that's the case, what if I just use a Roth IRA under the same bank? Well our income exceeds the allowance for contributions to a Roth IRA.

So, I feel like I'm stuck. I can't contribute to my existing IRA and possibly see big gains. And I can't do much of anything in my 401k. Is there anything im missing? Or is that how it's supposed to be?

I suppose I could use a standard brokerage account. However I'm not sure of the capital gains taxes would make it an effective retirement account, or long term savings, option.

Has anyone else been in this situation? Is there something I can do?

What stocks do you own that you believe are consistent winners and have done well for you that people seldom hear about? Or that don't get hyped often?

    Vix

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 04:15 PM PDT

Hi recently I've been getting into the VIX and my understanding is that its basically a fear gauge that's typically tracked in ETFs through future contracts. I just wanted anyone with a better understanding to maybe breakdown the mechanics for me as in how the vix gains/loses depending on market activity, etc and how I can play the vix depending on my predictions.

    Need a cheaper 401k provider

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 07:16 AM PDT

I provide a 401k for my business (5 employees) and my current provider, Acensus, charges $2000 a year plus $70 per participant. I feel like this is really high to just invest in index funds. Does anyone have a cheaper 401k provider?
