Small wins. I just got my first business cards printed.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:13 PM PDT

I've never had much need for business cards as my work has come from referral/digital channels, but it feels really good to have something physical I can hand out that represents my business.

I wanted to share it as a small win (very small) but psychologically significant for me changing how I think about my virtual business having some physical roots for the first time.

    Foreign Affairs

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 03:11 AM PDT

I understand that I'm currently cutting myself short by marketing only to the US. Is there any good intro to foreign affairs, sales, laws etc so I can expand and not get caught off guard by little tidbits in the legal system?

Edit: I sell small quantity electronic components, i.e led, motor controllers, Uno and bank boards etc.

    Credit card fraud

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:44 AM PDT

So I ended up getting SCREWED and not sure what will happen. Had somebody call to order a $1900 product. Asked for one day shipping. The package delivered and they called about ordering more. Call my distributor about if they offer any warranty against fraud etc. because I was suspicious. They said in their system they have 16 accounts of fraud from that address. Now they way it works is I dropship. So I pay the distributor, and they ship directly to the customer from FedEx. For some reason they didn't ask for a signature on a $1900 product. I'm already expecting a chargeback request sometime soon. Am I screwed or will FedEx or the distributor be liable? FedEx only covers a package up to $100. The items were shipped in 2 separate boxes with 2 different tracking numbers. I already notified Chase. Am I really shit out of luck? :/

Real Estate Photographers, how do you price your services?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:03 PM PDT

Hello! I'm a serial small business owner, I currently have a home inspection / thermal imaging business and a side gig doing mostly automotive photography.

Recently, the two have been crossing over and I'm being asked to do more and more real estate photography.

Currently, I have two prices, one for daylight shoots and one for night shoots. Recently, I lost my shirt spending hours shooting a huge home on a large property for the same price I'd charge to shoot a normal home on a small lot. For my home inspections, I charge by square footage, however I don't feel like that translates well to photography.

Anyone in this industry have any recommendations ?

I need to increase my be-back and return business. My idea here, tell me what you think.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:30 PM PDT

Small biz owner. I have two mattress stores and sometimes we lose business to people who come in and go some place else. Sometimes it's not a better deal, but rather the customer has spent all day shopping is is tired and buys at the last stop.

    • We price match
    • Competitive on deals/discounts/free delivery etc
    • 5 star 100+ google rating

But, I want people who go shopping to come back MUCH more frequently.

So I'm thinking of creating a "Be-back Coupon" to hand out. If a customer says they're going to go shop around I'll hand them a coupon with a few XYZ if they come back and buy from me.

    I'm thinking it could be:

    • Free Delivery
    • Free Pillows
    • 5 % Off
    • Upgraded sheets
    • $50 Visa G/C if the purchase is above $1,199

But, I'm not sure which to roll with and am hoping some fresh perspective could help. I work solo, so there is no biz partner to kick ideas off.

Any and all thoughts would be wonderful. Thanks!

I own a small staffing/temp company, and I'm filling out my W9 and can't decide if I should check Single-Member LLC or S-Corp?

    Posted: 01 Aug 2019 12:17 AM PDT

I am the sole owner, it's registered as an LLC, and I just recently launched the business. I did some research, and it seems that on the W9, 'Individual/Sole Proprietor or Single Member LLC' makes sense, as then I just report everything on my personal income taxes at the end of the year. However, I was also reading that by selecting 'Limited Liability Company' and then writing 'S' I can avoid possible double-taxation? I don't fully understand how this would work.

It's a start-up, and this year I plan on really only making as much money to cover the start-up costs of the business, and a little more.

I know I need to sit down with an Accountant and get this figured out, and I keep track of all my expenses and income, I just need to know which tax classification to select for now before I take everything to an accountant a few months from now once the business is profitable.

    Any advice much appreciated!

Anyone experienced in hosting corporate outings (golf) or get together (picnics/similar) - for local business "meets"?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 12:21 PM PDT

Basically as the title says we're looking to throw some kind of local "get together" for networking purposes. Not sure the plan of what/when yet.. just toying with the idea.

Reason being, is we're growing a lot as a company, and re-branding out name to adjust. We would take this as an opportunity to get more local nonrecognition and ideally form some partnerships/win some clients.

I'm just here looking to start a conversation on if anyone has experience attending a corporate social networking event between similar businesses, thoughts, do's and don'ts etc..

    Thanks & Cheers.

For a single-owner company, do I need Expensify and Quickbooks?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 09:28 AM PDT

A bit of a newb here, but I'm curious if I need both?

Or should I just enter all my expenses through Quickbooks vs. doing it through Expensify and exporting to QB?

Is there any upside to do it with Expensify and QB? I feel that Expensify's processing is a lot faster and more efficient.

    ---

Another question is that when I export from Expensify to QB, they appear as bills vs. expenses, is that correct?

    Thanks in advance!

This is for sale of virtual products on amazon...slightly more specific. thanks in advance.

Continuing to struggle with local marketing

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 10:03 PM PDT

I've posted here more than a few times. I own a very small pressure washing service in Surrey BC and have been grinding away to learn to get AdWords working locally to gain leads. This has only worked a little bit and it takes a lot of dough to get even one lead. From 100-200 bucks for each one average. I usually make about 700 dollars for each job completed. Here's another problem. Just not enough searches for these services here. I have no bid cap and still I only get about 10-14 impressions a day. My CTR is okay on some ads but how am I supposed to know for real when my impressions are so low. and my cost per click is an average of 14 dollars. Crazy! I have many keywords but wow. With a service area with a population of over a million I would think the impressions would be higher. I've worked on my SEO a lot too. It'll take a while for it to generate any leads so I'm just working with what I got until then. Feeling like all of the time put into this business has had little rewards.

Trying to revamp management of a small business including inventory, invoicing, accounting, website, and integration with eBay

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 08:21 PM PDT

    (X-posting this from /ecommerce)

    Hey all,

So I'm working with a small business that deals with an inventory of 1000+ items. Most of our customers purchase items through our network (email) and our eBay account. All our business is being managed manually through excels and word, but it's becoming pretty difficult to expand and keep track of everything as we continue to grow. Our website barely works and isn't tied to an up-to-date inventory or eBay, but we'd like to use it more.

The goal is to modernize our business and completely redo our inventory (preferably using barcodes) to tie with an accounting and sales system. We'd also like to integrate an updated website and our eBay account so everything is centralized.

I know this quite of an overhaul and we're willing to put the time into it. I've looked at using Quickbooks and Shopify integration for the accounting and website portion, but I don't know how eBay can be integrated.

Is Quickbooks/Shopify a good solution for this or do you recommend using different software? How about integration with eBay?

    Any help would be appreciated.

What do you use for automatic recurring payment processing?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:23 AM PDT

I run an agency through quickbooks. We bill monthly

Right now, i have a recurring invoice that gets sent out each month, but the client has to manually approve and pay each month. This naturally leads to me chasing down some of my less involved clients.

I'd like a payment processing solution that just takes a credit card one time, and charges that card every month.

No waivers, no documentation, no opt into one time payment, just a straightforward monthly sub.

This has been incredibly hard to find for some reason. Do any of you have something you reccomend?

Advertising Question for Small Business Owners

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 07:58 PM PDT

I was wondering how much do small business owners value advertising? Is it an extremely important aspect of your business or do you prefer to just grow organically?

I just want to understand the advertising aspect of owning a small business. Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

Just in the early stages of a new company, our mission is to eliminate single use plastic of a specific product. We have a first movers advantage in this market so I don't want to share more. But I'm looking for Canadian Grant's or investors interested in disposable plastic elimination, any advice

What do you use for budgeting?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 11:15 AM PDT

I use Wave for accounting and that has worked for about half a year.

I'm getting to a point though where I would like to have a shared budget so I can have partners look at a budget so I don't necessarily have to approve every single expense.

    Is there anything like that?

I wouldn't mind going with an accounting system and moving away from Wave if the value is there.

    P2P Private Library

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 06:29 PM PDT

Hi. I'm an entrepreneur and would like to create a peer to peer content renting service (basically a network of borrowers and lenders of books, movies, and music both online and in person). I was wondering what type of legal trouble I would run into because of copyright claims. My argument is that it's the same as a library, as it would be not for profit. But would I encounter the problems of Netflix, Blockbuster, Family Video, Pandora, and Spotify? Thank you.

Things to know when starting up your own business.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:19 PM PDT

Forgive me if this question has been asked before, I just joined the sub. What are some things to keep in mind when considering starting up your own business? What are some questions to ask and what are some things to make sure you don't do? I've considered opening up a self storage facility in an area were I think it'll do well, but I have no idea where to begin on such an endeavor. Also, my significant other has considered opening up a gun store as well. They've got such enthusiasm for the idea but I don't think they knows where to begin on their endeavor either.
