So....what cars do you guys drive?

I'm assuming most of us drive safe, reliable, not very flashy cars that get the job done, similar to why we chose the accounting profession.

Anyone know anyone who left B4 as an new associate after 2 months?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:11 PM PDT

If so, how did they end up? Are they happy?

The 60hr work weeks are awful. all I can think about is how this is isn't gonna work with a kid. We want to try in a year and I will still be an associate.

    Any advice?

How to bounce back from failure?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 03:39 PM PDT

I have been working in accounting for 4 years.I spent 2 years as an audit associate and almost 2 years as an internal auditor.I struggled with feelings of sadness and not enjoying my work constantly.

I underperformed in my first job and it killed my confidence.I took the first job out of public and it was more of the same kind of work that I didnt enjoy.I pushed myself another 2 years there and then I snapped and ended up resigning just shy of my 25th birthday.I didnt have any performance issues there but my heart wasnt in it anymore.

I have been applying passively for another job but so far I havent found anything.I dont mind taking a break,I have saved up some cash and my relatives have offered me a job with them until I find my feet but I know I disappointed a lot of people, especially my parents. They were really proud of me being an accountant and told everyone they knew about it.

Our relationship has become strained because I was never happy as an accountant/auditor and they didnt understand why.I felt selfish for not trying harder to make my jobs work and that I have messed up my career by job hopping and leaving 2 prestigious companies for no real reason.I also feel anxious about my future employment prospects because of how bad my job search has been so far and I worry about not being able to pick up my career where I left off.

Right now,I dont even know if accounting is for me anymore.I get constant insomnia at night due to anxiety and just a general sense of sadness when I look back at my years as an auditor.I keep doubting my skills because of the past negative experiences I had and I feel stuck.Yet I have put so much time into this and no one I know is supportive of me trying to change careers because of how much time I have sunk into it.

I dont know.I feel very lost and I dont know how to recover.

I had a “good” review with a poor raise, now what?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:16 PM PDT

I had my annual review in which it was actually very positive, but then came my compensation amount at the end of the meeting.

3.5%, my lowest by far (6% was my previous lowest) in my time at the firm, despite this year working harder than ever before.

I expressed my displeasure that how can I have a glowing review and then get a horrible raise. I wasn't given a straight answer and was told we would meet again in a couple weeks with some "answers". That maybe I was at the top of my positions pay scale or maybe the firm didn't make as much money. A lot of maybes, with no definite answer.

Well the couple of weeks is sometime this week. From the rumor mill all this meeting will be is how to get promoted next summer (to a supervisor) so that I'll be happy with my raise then. That's all fine and dandy, but that doesn't change my laughable raise currently.

I talked my mentor and they told me express once again my displeasure with my compensation and that it doesn't reflect my reviews and the work I've done in the past year in this meeting. I'm torn whether I should do this or not, in so many words I think my message was clear a couple weeks ago that I wasn't happy.

Is there any point in bringing this up again or should I just accept it, hear what has to be said about the future and then decide whether I want to be on that ride at this firm anymore?

Big 4 Manager Expat Tax Exit Opps

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:37 PM PDT

    Hello,

I am 30 years old and a CPA expatriate tax manager in the Big 4. Salary 100k. I'm aware this specialty group has poor exit opportunities. I've remained in the group because of the flexibility and I sort of like the work. Looking ahead, what career options do I have? How would I make a switch into a different area? Should I just accept that there are no exit opportunities and stay in the group? I've applied to a few jobs and spoken to a few recruiters, but haven't even had an interview.

    Thanks for the help.

    Accounting and the aviation industry

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 08:49 PM PDT

Long story short is I am a staff accountant about 2 years out of school and I have a hobby and interest in the aviation industry. Not flying, but just design and history. What jobs exist that mixes both the accounting and aviation worlds (besides accountant for aviation companies). Just trying to brainstorm unique jobs. Thanks.

Possible to get fired as a first year after a month?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 05:16 PM PDT

First year associate, b4, been here a month.

Basically, I'm concerned that I'm going to be fired because I was given work on Friday, but had to push it to the side to make room for more pressing things and as a result will not be able to submit it for review to my senior by the requested time. Is this the kind of performance that gets you fired? Is it possible to have this happen a month in?

CRA conspiracy theory - am I an unknowing secret agent??/s

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:53 PM PDT

Thought this would be the best sub for this. I have never copied over an email so I apologize if formatting is off.

I'm a bookkeeper in Canada with a construction client who restructured from a Sole Proprietorship to a Corporation, when I filed the T5018's I sent copies to the vendors (as a courtesy); this particular vendor received their copy and his wife sent the following email to my client!

    From: Vendor's wife
Date: August 4, 2019 at 4:45:18 PM EDT
    To: Client
    Subject: Re: T 5018

Thank you for the information (client). But for your information, this is not the real CRA. This form is made, or "custom made" by the CRA Corporation, a private company that has been victimized millions of tradespeople and small business operators such as (vendor). I have been investigating the CRA for ten years, interview them, research, and analyzing their practice and papers they issue to people. As of 2016, everyone receives their "custom made" paper. No longer from the real one. You are still new as a self-employed. My work will help you to be careful as well. This private company was created in April 2007, to take over the CRA. Virtually, they have as of this year. Their target is 2020. Service Canada is also the other private company created to take over the public service within the same year. When I complete my work, I intend to finish before or after the election, I will tell (vendor) to give it to you. Every little guy will know how to protect themselves. That form is beneficial to me too because it tells me that they are also using the bookkeepers and accountants to find their victims - the little guys.

Best clothes to stay comfortable in the office? (male, west coast)

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 12:36 PM PDT

Hey guys! I'm starting work in a month in SF with a B4 firm. While I have my fair share of "professional" clothing, I want to step up my business casual options. I want to get some comfy pants (I heard Lululemon makes good pants that work as bus casual) and short sleeve polos. What brands/fits do you guys recommend?

I've also heard All Birds are acceptable for a bus casual shoe? Is that true?

EDIT: one random question on shoes. Do people who walk to the office from their apartments ever have one pair of shoes for walking during the commute, and another pair to wear once they're at the office?

    Is it really worth it?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 10:16 AM PDT

Hello, I am currently an undergrad sophomore. I am definitely considering accounting. I even got a job at a small accounting firm to see what I think.

I really don't mind the work I do (currently bookkeeping and some light tax stuff) but I wanna hear it from you guys.

Is going into accounting worth it? I like the idea of a very steady career to start off with, but I definitely want to move out of accounting by the time I'm 30 ish.

If you could do it all over again would you choose accounting? If not then what else? I personally am passionate about Investing (including personal finance), Law, and History.

    Does military experience help?

    Posted: 04 Aug 2019 02:49 PM PDT

So I'm starting rotc in my college and would like to commission as a reserve officer hopefully in fiance or quartermaster and I was wondering if that would help me get hired or more pay starting off as an accountant (after I get my degree ofc). The negatives are I'll have to take about a weekend a month off of work an 2 weeks in the year including emergencies. Is it to my benefit to do rotc or does it hurt?
