Posted: 30 Jul 2019 09:28 AM PDT I'm a 25 year old woman with 7 years driving experience. I've never had a moving violation of any kind, no accidents, and no claims. I drive a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek. You guys helped me realize that I was paying way, way too much for insurance. $319 a month with Amica! By switching companies, I was able to get a policy with superior coverage for $85 a month with Geico. I'm also working on adding my newly licensed sister to the plan, which was absolutely unaffordable before. I know the premiums will increase after 6 months, but I will still come out way ahead. So thank you all! I'm saving a truckload of money and feel better with the higher coverage too. I always felt like I was being robbed at my previous company as I admittedly take pride in being a careful, attentive driver yet was being charged triple what my uncle, who has had several at-fault accidents and a more expensive car, pays. I think my previous company just heavily penalizes younger drivers but I can't say that for sure. In any case, thank you all! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2019 05:00 AM PDT About 6am this morning I turned a corner on a construction site. Sun is in my eyes as I am entering the corner, and street, as the sun is just above the horizon. My eyes are adjusting, i can see the edges of the road fine, and the road is clear. Then bang! I drop a good 18 inches on my front end. There is a massive, short dip in the road. Sounds like my car is making weird noises now in the front end. Not sure whether this will count as an at fault, or not, as there is no signage, pylons, tape, or anything to warn of the massive and sudden drop in the road. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2019 02:40 AM PDT Hello, So I've got an iMac that I paid ~£1.5k for around 5 years ago. A little while back, the screen got cracked down one side (when in transit to another location). After taking it to apple, and being quoted £400 to replace the entire screen, I'm not wondering if cases such as this are worth the hassle of going through the likes of Home Insurance.. Would really appreciate it if anyone with previous experience with similar claims (or any other useful perspective) could drop a comment :) Thanks, [link] [comments] |
Landlord’s insurance company is coming after me for damages Posted: 30 Jul 2019 04:18 PM PDT About half way through leasing a townhouse, I installed a floating shelf on the wall. I measured everything and used a stud finder to drill the pilot holes and sink the screws. Everything went fine. About 3 months later while moving out, I was taking out one of the screws and a water pipe behind it started gushing water. Apparently the screw had not hit the stud but instead punctured the water pipe right next to it and plugged the hole for several months. I turned off the water immediately and began cleaning up the water that had collected on the ground and between the paint and drywall. Some water also got down to the garage below. I contacted the landlord immediately and he coordinated a plumber and water clean up crew to take care of any water that might be in between the walls and floors. The landlord was very understanding that it was kind of a freak accident and could've happened to anyone. My renters insurance doesn't cover water damage (I didn't know this at the time) so he made a claim to his homeowners insurance. He paid his deductible, returns my damage deposit for some reason, and we went on our ways. Fast-forward several months and I'm at a new apartment. His insurance sends me a large packet in the mail claiming I've been found at fault for the damages and am responsible for over $4,000 repayment. My renters insurance has confirmed that they will not help in any way. I actually talked to the landlord about it and he was completely surprised that they contacted me and he himself hadn't heard from them since he made the claim. I'm not sure if this is the place to ask about this, but do I have recourse against this? I put a screw into the wall which is a customary thing to do as a tenet. I genuinely thought I was drilling into a stud which was within an inch of the pipe. The pipe in question was situated very close to the drywall, close enough for a screw to puncture. I understand the insurance is looking for someone else to pay up, but seems very unfair (not that they care) to hold me responsible for what seems like a ticking time bomb waiting for someone to hit. Will the insurance company pursue litigation over this? I can't currently pay 4 grand with a baby on the way next year and about $500 in savings. I'm looking for any advice, and hopefully this is an ok sub to post in. Thank you in advance! [link] [comments] |
Neighbors tree split at trunk and fell into my yard. How should I go about this? Posted: 31 Jul 2019 01:06 AM PDT We had a bad storm and my neighbors tree that's been slowly dying has now split in half, crushed my fence and did some damage to a fire pit and hammock. It's so significant that it's taking up literally the whole yard. This happened last evening. I talked to my neighbor who is going to start working on it Wednesday morning. I'm not 100% sure if they are going to use insurance and if this is definitely something their insurance will cover. I don't want to contact my insurance unless necessary. I have documented everything with pictures and a video. Other than that, I'm sort of trusting he will be taking care of it ASAP and work with me on the damage. [link] [comments] |

What should I expect to get for my totaled bmw? Posted: 30 Jul 2019 08:14 PM PDT One of the comments in my previous post on r/legaladvice mentioned this subreddit so I figured I may as well make a post here. This past Saturday I was involved in a car accident in which the other driver was at fault. Their insurance company is USAA and they have been very fast and efficient in getting things taken care of. I've already gotten a rental car through them and they are towing my car to an approved shop to inspect it since it was flagged for total loss. My car is a bmw x5 2003 model with 117000 miles on it and other cars around this mileage are in the 5 to 7000 range on kellybluebook. I also got all four of my tires changed in May and plan on mentioning this to the insurance company. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2019 08:07 PM PDT Okay this gets a little complicated so hold on tight. I'm transgender FtM, so I take testosterone. My insurance refuses to cover any and all transgender related care. I have a letter from a psychologist diagnosing me with gender dysphoria and major depression, recommending hormones as a treatment. I went through all the proper channels and blood work and got it. My doctor codes the hormones as treatment for an unspecified endocrine condition, so really they shouldnt know that it's for me being trans except for the fact I am female. Now I have had my legal name and gender marker changed, I have told them I have changed my name and gender marker but they are still denying all of my claims. Either they have kept a specific record that I used to be marked as female just so that they can deny my claims, or they never changed my gender marker in the first place. They shouldn't deny it even with my gender marker changed because often people with intersex conditions get it changed and need hormones or sometimes it just gets put down wrong in their system. I am trying to save up for surgery for my chest to finally feel at home in my skin. I know that there is no way I could ever get them to cover the surgery, but paying for hormones is killing me and my budget and I can't do it for my entire life. Any help will be appreciated. Accident with rental car, dinked another vehicle Posted: 30 Jul 2019 11:52 PM PDT Hi everyone. Around 2 weeks back my mother and I rented a car in her name with no insurance policy. I'm under the legal age to rent a car so I'm not very experienced when it comes to accidents or insurance procedures. This was my first accident ever after driving for 3 years. Anyways, the incident occurred when I was moving the car with my friend in it at a 2 lane intersection. I was in the left turn lane and I found myself over the pedestrian crosswalk so I reversed backward to correct. I dinked another driver in the right turn lane as I reversed. I didn't think this at the time, but now I think this happened because the other driver was partially on the line separating the lanes. My friend exited the car and got into their vehicle as we pulled into a parking lot. When we got out to check the damage, it was around a watermelon-sized dent the right body side of the vehicle and a slightly smaller dent on their front hood side. The other driver seemed understanding and calm about the situation at the time and only asked for my number and insurance information. Telling them it was a rental, I gave them the registration information instead. We exchanged numbers, and the driver went on their way with their passenger. Initially later that day I texted the number apologizing for what happened (rookie mistake, again due to my inexperience) and they asked for my insurance provider over text. I didn't reply except for calling them a few times to no answer. We found out later that they contacted the rental agency about the incident. No pictures were taken of the damage at the time, but I assumed it was my fault where now I realize it was probably the other driver's error as well. What's the best way to tell the insurance that it was both a fault of mine and the other driver to avoid a heavy cost increase in insurance? [link] [comments] |
Health insurance for my family if job doesn't offer coverage Posted: 30 Jul 2019 05:24 PM PDT I recently lost my job which offered coverage through Anthem BCBS. My premium was roughly 500 a month for myself and my family including vision and dental. But now I find myself doing a retail job with no benefits. Pay is ok but my wife is pregnant and we can't afford to lose coverage, and we don't want to change her doctor. Please, I would REALLY appreciate some advice on my best course of action. Posted: 30 Jul 2019 05:23 PM PDT I had my car stolen today, I was in the process of moving out of an apartment complex so I had my car unlocked with the keys in the cup holder as I loaded up my car because its a push to start and locks when the keys go out of range. I was taking some clothes out of my apartment to load up and come out to see it driving off. called the police, filed the police report, made insurance claim. Still havnt got a call that it was found. It was a 2017 car I got for 20k (financed half of it) ive had for 2 years now. I had put a lot of time and money into the car. aftermarket audio system, lowered suspension, intake and exhaust, and rims/wheels. I loved that car :( . I still have 9k left to pay off on it. My fear is I will not get much money from the insurance company and be left with like 3k or something for a down payment on a new car. I just want to be in a car of equal value. Is it possible for me to claim the aftermarket parts as well? Anyone been through this and can offer any advice on how to get the most out of the insurance claim [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2019 01:11 PM PDT Hey r/Insurance professionals, this might not be a typical post on this sub. Mods - feel free to remove if needed. But I'm in a situation where I would like some more input from those who work in this industry. Specifically for those who work with Property / Casualty / Workers Comp, etc with businesses. Some background on this situation. I work for a company where recently we were told to change our "insurance company" and that we have outgrown our current guy. For many years, our company worked with a local "agent" (I think), and it was suggested we start working with a big firm (one of those top 10 companies in terms of annual revenue with offices all over the world). Its my understanding that a big firm has access to better products, and has better resources in other areas such as overall risk management solutions, handling and processing of claims, etc. Is working with a big "broker" for a medium size company (sites in multiple states, around 300 employees), better than working with a local "agent"? what are some of the advantages / disadvantages for each? Posted: 30 Jul 2019 10:57 AM PDT [Copied from r/legaladvice by suggestion] August 2018 I'm driving my girlfriends car (now ex) with her and her son in the car. We're sideswiped while making a lane change. I pull over to the side of the road, while searching the car for the insurance she tells me the car isn't insured. Since both parties are pulled over we exchange info and go from there. I make my statement to my own insurance as well as the other parties insurance. My gf makes her statement, time passes June 2019 I receive a call from a subrogation company telling me I need to pay up 17 thousand dollars for damage to the other parties car and medical bills. I told them that since there was no person ever decided to be at fault in the accident that I'm not going to pay. July 2019 A collections agency mails me a nice bill on behalf of the insurance company. At this point I decided to seek advice from my own insurance company. I have yet to seek out a lawyer. I'm not sure what my options are here. I don't have that kind of money, I'm a retail worker. Not to mention that I'm not at fault for the accident. I spoke to my own insurance company for advice and they pointed out that it's my word versus their word, there is no police report or independent witness, and I was never decided to be at fault I might be able to poke some holes in their case but I'm really at a loss for how to proceed. I haven't responded to the collections agency yet. Any advice would help, if you need any more info from me go ahead and ask. Thank you. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2019 11:48 AM PDT I own a makerspace (community workshop) in NYS / NYC. We have operated for 2 years and have not even got a single reasonable quote. We offer: -Community workshops with tools such as: lasercutter, CNC, 3D printer, hand tools, band saws. -Classes for adults on these tools. -Childrens classes on 3-D printing, laser cutting NO handtools or power tools -We consult and do product design for people -Our employees are trained by us and use the tools -We help people complete their projects as needed I am beside myself and so angry. The last insurance agent gave us this premium: It was $9,000 for every $20,000 of income. Its just not possible.. She mentioned 3D printing got us denied multiple times, it had "a lot of risk." I am a tech teacher in a school with the same tools. CNC / Manufacturing companies get insurance dont they? 3D printer manufactures? NYS is possibly going to fine us for NOT have insruance for employees because we cant get unemployment insurance because we CANT get general liability. This is single handedly the thing I have spent my most time on in the entire inception of this fucking company. We went from 0 in income to potentially 50-80K this year. Can ANYONE help, im at the end of my rope. [link] [comments] |
Car Insurance Refund Checks?!? Posted: 30 Jul 2019 06:23 PM PDT We just cancelled car insurance on both of our vehicles earlier this month and started using another company that is much more affordable. Last week we received a letter from the old insurance company saying we had a "policy premium credit" of $2,100.00 and then two checks. One for $1,300.00 and another for $150.00 Is it normal to receive checks after you cancel insurance? Is it normal to have a 2k balance but have them keep accepting payments in the past? Plus the two checks don't total $2100.00.... Basically, the last thing we want to do is deposit the checks them have the insurance company realize they made a mistake and then withdraw the amount from our account later after having spent it.... Thanks! [link] [comments] |
pregnant wife Intentionally skipping insurance in 2020 to qualify for MCAP (CA) Posted: 30 Jul 2019 05:38 PM PDT My wife and I just found out we're expecting. Due date March 1st, 2020. We fall JUST under the upper limit for MCAP (Medi-Cal access program) but we don't qualify because with kaiser her maternity stuff is subject to the deductible rather than having a separate maternity deductible. BUT, next year, if we don't sign up for coverage, she would technically apply because she wouldn't have health coverage. Does this sound right? After the baby is born, she'll be able to have a life changing event that will allow her to then apply for other health insurances. Can we do this? I don't see why not, but I'd love a second opinion. How can I tell what safety feature are on the used car I bought? Posted: 30 Jul 2019 01:52 PM PDT I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but here it goes. Posted: 30 Jul 2019 07:49 AM PDT I'm in a gated EPO so I need a PCP, and will eventually select the new provider as my PCP. I can't until they fix whatever is going on between them and the insurance company. Provider tells me it's fine and to keep coming if needed and they'll work it out, just want to make sure I won't get any surprise bills — I know my state has a law about that but I'm not sure if this would be covered there. Posted: 30 Jul 2019 05:13 PM PDT Hi ya'll! I have never been in, or involved with any sort of accident in my entire life, so I have NO IDEA what I am doing. I'm here asking for help because I am lost. My landlord hired a contacting company to do some work on the building. The worker driving the company truck flat our drove into the back of my parked vehicle in our driveway. The gentleman admitted fault and kept apologizing, and we called the police to file a report. The gentleman was offering cash to have it fixed but we declined because we had no idea how much it was going to cost to fix. We spoke with the owner of the company (also because the gentleman didn't have an insurance card in the car) to get some information and let him know about the incident. He also offered cash to fix the vehicle, but again we declined, at least until we had a solid estimate of how much this would cost to repair. I got a quote from the local body shop who stated it is about $1200-$1500 worth of work. I sent the owner of the company the quote and let him know I am fine with him simply paying upfront to the body shop for the repairs of the vehicle or filing an insurance claim but I needed to know what he wants to do by the following day as I do not want to wait any longer to report to insurance if that's the route we are going. He called my fiance to tell him that he can't pay for the vehicle and I am being unreasonable (because the quote came out to be high??), and we should go to some other shop he likes over an hour away from where I live and work and have them do some sort of repair. I will not do that, as I do not know the shop *at all* and don't want to be stuck with a bill that wasn't my fault. So, I want to report to insurance. How do I go about it? I was told I don't call mine because it isn't my fault, I call his insurance and report it to them. Do I get to pick the shop? (My body shop said I do)... Does their insurance cover all the damage? I have never reported anything in my life so I don't want to screw it up and make my rates go up if I call my insurance (do I need to do that?) Any help is appreciated! **TL;DR**: Contractor hit my car in my driveway, admitted fault, called police and filed report same day, company offered cash or insurance route to fix, got quote and company gawked at it and told me I'm being unreasonable-- want to do insurance claim, do I just call theirs and they handle everything including cost? Adding a property manager and landlord as additionally insured in renter's policy Posted: 30 Jul 2019 04:31 PM PDT I apologize if these are basic questions, first time I'll be leasing an apartment that requires renter's insurance, so I'm still a little rough around the edges and could use some clarification here. Under the terms of my lease, I was required to obtain a policy with coverage of at least $5,000 in personal property insurance and at least $300,000 liability insurance. I was also expected to add both my property manager and landlord as "additional insured" (however, after reading online about the ramification of this and emailing my property manager, he has mentioned that "additional interest" would suffice). I have gotten a few online quotes to get an idea of costs (I bumped up the personal property insurance to $10,000 (I'm a grad student, so I don't really own much, my most expensive things are my desktop, laptop and books, by far). That being said, I have two questions: 1) How would I go about adding additional interests? Is this something that needs to be done before I sign up for the policy (I don't see any option to atm)? Or can it be done after the fact? 2) Is there something I should be on the look out for when picking a policy? At the moment I'm simply looking for one that will meet the requirements and be as cheap as it can, but I recognize that there's things I'm not considering. I'll appreciate any advice you have! Posted: 30 Jul 2019 12:42 PM PDT I'll try to keep this brief as I can because I think its a fairly common issue. Unfortunately I am rather long winded. TLDR at bottom. Last week I was stopped at a red light when a Jeep rear ended my 2006 Toyota Camry. Jeep only has scratches - my tail lights, bumper and trunk were damaged. Police not called because no injuries and both cars were drivable post accident. I filed a claim on the other drivers insurance and they have yet to get a statement from their insured (its only been 3 business days since claim was filed however so perhaps I am overreacting here). I provided pictures of the scene of the accident, including a picture showing both cars at the scene. Without a statement, this would be my only 'proof' that the accident happened. KBB of my car with just over 100k miles is ~$2500 (my rationale for no collision coverage). Initial repair estimate from other insurance is ~$1800. With out any witnesses or police report, is it likely the other insurance will deny the claim without any statement from their insured after 30 days? I've seen suggestions to go through my insurance to get the repair process started but without collision I think I am SOL here. My trunk will no longer close (currently kept mostly shut with bungee cords) and tail light cover is smashed, so while physically drivable, I am uncomfortable driving for any long distance. I can technically live without a car for a while (certainly an inconvenience however) so I'm trying to determine if i should mentally prepare for a situation where I see nothing from insurance. Thankfully I have good credit and a stable financial situation so I'm not super concerned about either paying out of pocket for repairs or just getting a new car altogether but my preferred option is to get this car repaired through insurance. TLDR: Got rear ended when stopped at a red light, other insurance currently unable to contact their insured. I have no collision coverage. If insurance never gets a statement, how likely is it for my claim to be denied and I receive no compensation? Thank you for reading if you made it this far! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2019 10:03 AM PDT Generally speaking how does a HDHP handle cosmetic surgery with respect to the deductible and out of pocket max? If I were to submit claims they would clearly be denied but would it count towards my deductible? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 30 Jul 2019 03:57 PM PDT Aside from JD Power, etc reviews, most personal/consumer driven reviews only tend to be following a bad situation ("company X won't pay my claim!!") What are some reviews or general opinions (lowest rates, best coverage, etc) you have for specific companies that aren't based on a single negative anecdote? [link] [comments] |
Steps to take after minor car accident, how much will rates rise? Posted: 30 Jul 2019 03:36 PM PDT I live in RI. I got into a minor accident in which I was at fault at a stoplight. Minor scratches on front and rear of respective vehicles, no dents or anything. Responding officer suggested handling it ourselves since there were little to no damages, but other driver wanted to go through insurance and kinda seemed happy about potentially screwing me. I am on my dad's insurance and this is my second accident, other one was over a year ago. What should I do next and how much will my rates rise? I am absolutely overcome with guilt since my dad doesnt have much money, and I couldn't give less of a shit about the scratches on my car or the $83 fine I got got following too close. I am only concerned about the rates increasing and by how much. I have no idea what to do next and I feel so terrible about what has happened. [link] [comments] |
