Core founders not designing to user feedback. And we are flopping.

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 06:29 PM PDT

I think this is an issue with pride, but we repeatedly get feedback that our model is not sufficient and drives users away. I have heard multiple people tell me it's a good idea except for x y and z. But when I try to bring it up, and say we should tweak things, every ounce of evidence is ignored and substituted with "I think it can work and drive users to the site." Except people are leaving in droves. I don't know what can get these people to open their eyes to these issues. We are going in a completely different direction and focusing on the completely wrong things. I've tried showing screenshots, logging feedback, nothing works. Has anyone ever dealt with this? I get believing in an idea, but you gotta survive and faith isn't enough. How have you dealt with this?

Need reassurance you’re heading in the right direction and on track?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 06:12 AM PDT

Every Monday morning I put aside time to do my 'Weekly Check-in' where in a notepad I have outlines the Key Areas of my life: •Relationship, Friendships, Family, Health, Mental health, Personal Development, Work/life balance, Business 1 & Business 2

I then answer the following questions for each of the Key Areas: • Am I happy with the current situation? • What's going well? • What's going badly? • What could I do to improve the situation? • What small change could I do this week to improve? • Is my progress in line with my Core Principles? • is my progress heading towards my Vision?

I then ask myself general questions:

    • Am I happy in general? • What made me smile last week? • What will make me smile this week? • What can I do to smile more?

I do not share my answers with anyone and I am 100% honest with my answers. I find it's helpful to use a notebook so I can see what recurring issues are and how I've previously dealt with them. I find it helps me keep ok track or get back on to it, maybe give it a try if you're feeling a little bit without direction?

How to demonstrate interest in a startup

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 08:35 PM PDT

Imagine I'm in the process of developing a startup, and am preparing to pitch for investment, how would I demonstrate market potential or market interest in said startup product.

Specifically, how do I show investors that there is actually a large demand for the product?

    Scaling

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 05:55 PM PDT

So I have been working on my company for about five years full time. We never made a profit until about six-twelve months ago (I am just starting to pay myself this month). Now we can't keep up with our growth. It is insane.

My problem now is assembling a team around me to help me scale. Does anyone have experience with this or any suggestions?

What tools have you used in your early startup phase?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2019 01:52 AM PDT

I'm wondering what tools you are using for organising your startup. Especially in the very early phase, when it's just you or a few founding members. To keep track of deadlines, contacts, networks, planning phases, relevant information, collaboration, communication etc. Weather is it's just papers, local files, online services or in your head.

Working on my startup solo and have lost my motivation. Would finding a cofounder help?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 10:50 AM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

    Tldr; at bottom.

I am a female founder and I've been in a rut for a few months now and I am really trying to figure it how to get motivated again.

A little background: I launched my startup (solo) a few months ago and it finally gained a little steam before I realized my subscription model was a little broken. So I stopped marketing (to avoid more people signing up for the flawed subscription) and hired some 3rd party engineers to fix the website. In the meantime, I've been doing NOTHING and I've lost all my motivation I once had.

I have a day job in addition to my startup, and my goal is to be able to quit one day (and finally pay myself to pay the bills), be successful enough to hire a cofounder and have a team. I work so much better when I have someone to help me and hold each other accountable so I don't feel so alone. Everyone is telling me to wait to get a cofounder until I reach a level of success and can work full time in my startup. But doing this alone right now is killing my self esteem. I am not meeting my goals. I have so much anxiety over just opening my laptop and so I procrastinate all day long, then I beat myself up over how lazy I am, and then I avoid the issue even more because my self esteem is down. I just don't know how to work hard anymore. I know how stupid this sounds! But I wish it wasn't so hard for me to just get out of bed. And no, I'm not depressed. I'm super happy, have a great personal life (maybe a little too good of a social life and then I beat myself up for not spending more time on my startup). It's just a "me" problem and I'm just lazy all of a sudden.

I do want to mention I work really well under pressure when deadlines are assigned by other people, but if I try to make deadlines for myself I always find an excuse to miss them.

Would finding a cofounder help like I think it would, or is there something else I can try to just get my startup off the ground? When is the right time to get a cofounder?

I've invested $35k into this so I know I believe in my business, I just don't believe in myself all of a sudden.

Tldr; I've become too lazy to work hard on my newly launched startup and I think the issue is my procrastination problem and that I need a cofounder. I want to change!

Thanks in advance for any advice or insight.

Edit: thanks for everyone's kind advice. I think I'm just overwhelmed at the moment since I haven't been able to accomplish much the last few months while the site has been worked on. Just talking to you about it helped me. Just got done with a 12 hour day and am feeling great! My next step is to find a mentor and start some structured goals. :)

Startups of Reddit, is your local government supportive enough ?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 08:53 PM PDT

In my past 1.5 years of experience of running a startup the only thing that almost always has felt like a road blockade is the legal and tax hurdles. As a startup, dealing with them without any help of an expert is nerve wrenching.

So my question is why is a startup subjected to these things ? Why is a startup expected to fulfill all the same requirements as that of an established company/organization with a lot of human resource and revenue?

Even claiming some sort of relaxation from the compliances takes months of effort and my personal time, all the while my startup suffers. I could have given the same time to my startup.

I am on the verge of breaking down.

    My location- Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India.

"It's been done before" - what do you think of this?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 08:33 AM PDT

A mythical phrase that I hear a lot while starting up is "Its been done before" - this phrase is heard in the initial phases as we speak with people who are our friends, who we think have done well in their career but never been an entrepreneur or someone out of the domain. However, if you are building something which is done before and been making money and profitable - you should definitely do it. You can do it better, you can do the same, take a pie and survive, you can innovate in your journey and above everything, you will learn how to run a business and you have something like a verified milestone.

So, ignore that comment - several years get wasted in the initial stages as everyone around you will want to build something cool, new IG or new snap or something out of the world. In the end, it is about building a sustainable business. A taxi driver never thinks he can't drive as so many others are already driving - it's up to you to take the vehicle, jump on the streets, win customers and survive.

What're your thoughts? What's your mythical phrase while starting up?

How to Prep for a First BD Hire interview?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 03:58 PM PDT

I'm meeting with the founder of a startup later this week regarding their first business development hire. It's an individual contributor role and I'm excited by the company's prospects.

Any tips on how to prep, express empathy, etc. would be welcomed. I left another startup in April which ended up being a disaster.

Kind of lost and not know what to do next

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 03:20 PM PDT

    Hello Redditors,

I have been working in a product for the online dating industry. I have all the pieces to create the product but not sure how (or how much) to put them together before my product is presentable. My product is basically a by-product of applying Machine Learning on a large set of data. Algorithms are consistent but data grows to create new by-products. Here is where I am stumped.

    1. Do I need a finished product before I pitch to the partners or just show how it works in theory and once they agree to proceed with my product then work my idea? I have some hardcoded cases that demo how it works.
    2. My only edge is the data I have collected and since I am pitching to a billion-dollar company they can easily imitate my product if I don't convince them completely so I have kind of only one-shot to sell.
    3. Do I need a website for my product or slides are sufficient?
    4. I am solo but how do I come off as a team so they have more confidence in my business?
    5. Should I ask customers how much they want to pay for my product? I am not sure how to price my product and as mentioned in step 2 I don't want to give them any reasons to rip me off.

I will appreciate any advice on how I can move along past these hurdles. Thanks in advance

How do you work on you startup when you have a full time job?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 06:03 AM PDT

Hi, I just graduated this year with computer college degree and went already on finding a job and luckily, I settled with one. Although it is a long trip when going back and forth from home to office, as a fresh graduate, the benefits are better than the others.

Before graduating, I have been following and reading blogs about startups and also things about my idea. I decided to first focus on my a job and make savings, then focus on the startup. But thinking about it, I feel like I'll be wasting time. Instead, I decided to do my job and startup. But then, I have a full time job wherein, currently, takes all the time of my day, like really, there's no time to think while on job, even if you take a break, there is always a next task.

About my 'startup', it is a total travel application, made for the businesses and the travellers to interact. It is basically a marketplace but includes everything about travel (itinerary, food, accomodation, activities, etc...).

TL:DR; I am at the stage of validating the idea, and making at least a digital prototype. But I don't know how would I fit my startup to already busy schedulr at work.

Any comments? Ps. I cant edit the title anymore lol sorry for the typo

    Registering the business

    Posted: 29 Jul 2019 10:33 AM PDT

I am in the process of creating a mobile app that lets people advertise their events in the area (sort of like Eventbrite). I just read a piece of advice that said we should register as an LLC sooner rather than later and convert to a corp when the time comes. This shouldn't be a problem since it's relatively cheap.

I'm just not sure where to register. I live in Maryland, my co-founder lives in Virginia, but we would mainly start our operation in Washington DC since it's the largest metro area within 30 miles of us. We are not opposed to doing work in MD or VA as the metro area engulfs a sizable chunk of both.

Would it be ok to just register as a LLC in Delaware for now? Should we register in DC, MD, and VA or just DC? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Also, how long does a registration last? We're still pretty early in the startup phase.
