Please use this thread to have discussions which you don't feel warrant a new post to the sub. While the Rules for posting questions on the basics of personal finance/investing topics are relaxed a little bit here, the rules against memes/spam/self-promotion/excessive rudeness/politics still apply!

Have a look at the FAQ for this subreddit before posting to see if your question is frequently asked.

Found out my neighbor is into FIRE

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 05:29 AM PDT

While returning from a walk my wife and I stopped to chat with our Cul-de-sac neighbor. Her daughter has graduated with a pharmacy degree and she told us that she got a job lined up. She gets paid 50% of her wage until her professional cert comes through and then will be bumped up to 100%. I mentioned that coming from college her 50% pay will still be a big raise from what she's used to and that when she gets up to 100% she could keep living on 50% and save the rest.

She had already suggested that to her daughter and then the conversation shifted to all FIRE. She knew about leanFIRE and fatFIRE and talked about her coming retirement but how her husband likes to spend. I'm looking forward to some more real life discussions (with no numbers) and learning how it works for them since they are about 12-15 years ahead based on them having one kid done with school and 1 getting ready to start college compared to mine in elementary school and preschool.

Anyone else have experience discovering another FIRE follower in the wild? How'd it go?

This is a throw away account for obvious reasons as my neighbor obviously follows this sub

    Dual Citizen Potential Perks?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 01:19 PM PDT

Hey all, appreciate all the helpful guidance you provide on a daily basis. Had a quick question that I was hoping someone might be able to answer.

I live and work in the US and make enough to live comfortably and max out both my Roth IRA and 401K. I also happen to have dual citizenship in Canada where they have a savings tool called a Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA). Can't exactly remember the annual contributions, but it's similar to the Roth in theory and contribution limit.

Should I make use of this additional savings tool and max this out for myself and my wife? That would get me an additional $10K in tax sheltered savings annually which sounds great on paper.

Any tax implications you see with this, etc.? I know I'm supposed to report accounts over $10K in foreign countries (FBAR) which I currently have none and just wanted to look at this holistically in the long run.

Currently on track to reach FI in 10 years due in large part to what I have learned here!

    Appreciate any thoughts/opinions!

What is on your pre-resignation checklist? (Lean FIRE)

    Posted: 08 Jul 2019 12:30 PM PDT

I'm getting all the lingering repairs in the house fixed and getting the results from my annual physical before giving notice so that I can minimize the chance of a costly surprise (I can afford one or two, but who wants that?).

    What else?

For the few folks here who have actually fired, what are you doing re dental insurance? Or are you self insured by paying cash?

I hate my job but the routine kept me mentally in check from depression. I worry about having no structure after FIRE. My plan is to join a coworking space to maintain routine. Literally paying to go to an office, LOL. Anyone done this? Did it help?

    Why I won't retire - Graham Stephan

    Posted: 07 Jul 2019 07:17 PM PDT

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pL88MIpKeA&t=611s

Interesting video by Graham Stephan, the YouTuber who introduced me to the FI/RE community in the first place. On the one hand, he's basically saying that he intends to do the exact opposite of what everyone in the sub is trying to do; On the other hand, he brings up some good points about what FI/RE is all about, and some potential negatives of retiring early, along with some other useful nuggets for newer readers (myself included) like "One More Year Syndrome". Debate, discuss, whatever; I'm interested in what you guys have to say about this.
