    Unglamorous businesses

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 02:15 PM PDT

Hi, I'm trying to figure out my next career step, and eventually want to start a company. I've noticed that there's often better margins and much less competition in less glamorous industries. What are some of the least sexy, highest margin businesses you've run or seen? Bonus if the competition is often lazy/incompetent.

I'm considering buying a used bookstore and am looking for advice about whether it's a good idea or not.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 09:41 PM PDT

I live in a small city of about 16,000 people, and there is only one single bookstore here. It's a small used shop in a hole-in-the-wall area right off the interstate. The original owner of 25 years passed away several months ago, and the family is wanting to sell it. They're basically just keeping it open until they find someone to buy it.

From the little information I've gathered so far, they're asking $15K or best offer for the store, inventory, and client list, and claim that the original owner was able to pay various bills and her car payment, plus have some extra "fun" money, from what the store brought in every month. The rent would be $500/mo, utilities are $200, and new books every month are $200-500 depending on the orders. This store seems to be popular mostly with older crowds and has almost zero advertising. It's pretty much word of mouth and loyal, older customers. From what I've seen as a customer, most of the books are somewhat dated.

There are definitely things I could do to make it better such as better advertising, making the actual store more appealing to be in, and having a better selection of books to offer. My concerns though are:

1.) Will I be able to make enough money to cover the store's monthly expensive, as well as my own bills (~$2,000/mo altogether)?

2.) If the store isn't as successful as I need it to be, will I be able to sell it?

Being an avid reader, I'd love to own a bookstore of my own, but I don't want to be caught in a bad business move that will drain me financially. Any advice about this would be greatly appreciated!

    "I'm your new boss" speech!

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 06:04 AM PDT

I was just promoted to Operations Manager within the small business I work for. I will now be managing the 10 other technicians I have been working alongside for the past several weeks. The owner will be announcing it via staff meeting today and just told me she wants me to say a little speech that is both encouraging and also sets boundaries (her example: I will now be making sure you are doing your job - don't think I won't hesitate to send you to _______ 's office).

1.) FML - I'm not great at speeches, writing or reciting! 2.) I understand what she is saying - we are all friends and she doesn't want them not taking me seriously, but I think her example is not the best way to set boundaries.

Any suggestions for something both short and effective so I don't forget what to say or look like a moron? I'm freaking out with it being asked so last minute.

How do you research a potential franchise store opportunity?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 11:30 PM PDT

I'm doing some user interviews on how franchisees research when looking to buy a franchise. My company is trying to build a product to help franchisees get access to unbiased data about a store they're looking to buy, and as part of this I'd like to understand how franchisees currently research stores they're looking to purchase.

In addition to data provided by the franchisor, where else do you go for information about a store?

What other data do you look for when you're completing your due diligence?

How long would you spend researching and completing due diligence?

Thanks so much for any insights you're able to share.

Need help picking a brand name, please help.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 11:10 PM PDT

Hi guys, I'm trying to start a clothing brand, I've spent weeks/months trying to name it and make sure I'm not infringing copyrights and that I'll be able to get a .com/.co.uk domain. So far I've whittled it down to; Athena's Wrath, Gryffyn, Nemean Lion, Inferis.

They are all based on Greek mythology which I will also incorporate into the design once I've settled on a name. If you know one of these is already a business please let me know so I can cross it off my list. All help is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Business ideas for 14 year old

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 10:35 PM PDT

Hi. I'm 14 years old and have been running a small chocolate business for just over a year. I have been wondering if anyone has any others ideas for someone who has all the time in the world right now. I've also been looking at stock trading and if I should get into that.

    Here’s the tea...

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 06:36 PM PDT

No Kermit sipping on Lipton here, but I need your help.

So I'm looking into starting a specialty tea shop in a college town. The idea is that you can create your own special brew (hot or iced) by picking a base tea and adding different herbs, spices, fruits, etc to make the perfect blend for your mood. I would highlight the benefits of each ingredient (like ginger to help nausea, lavender to calm), and offer by the cup or by the kettle. I figure it would be a good idea to offer tables and comfy chairs for students to study, making it into a gathering area for them. However, I'm afraid I'll run into the same problem many cafes/coffee shops have: people buy one cup and sit and work for hours. I thought about serving (very few) pastries as an add-on, but don't want to get bogged down if they don't sell. How do I increase the ticket for each customer? Tea doesn't have a very high markup, each cup only being 2-3 bucks. Any input is appreciated!! Thank you!

Edit: I had originally wanted to do a combination book store/ tea shop, but I know books aren't doing so hot anymore. Anyone think it could be profitable?

Need Help With Inexpensive VOIP Phone Line /Number Suggestions ‍♀️

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 08:50 PM PDT

I was wondering if you all could suggest an inexpensive and easy quick set up I could use to establish a separate business line for my online /offline start up business. I do not foresee using it much for clients but I would like to use it as a number to use for contacting anyone else I need to utilize now and in the future i.e. when I begin to outsource various assistants, etc. Nothing fancy needs to be attatched, a simple separate phone line. Thank you so very much in advance.

Best automated UPS shipping refund websites?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 07:47 AM PDT

We ship dozens of packages a week and are big enough that we don't notice when a package is delivered a day or 2 late unless it's a critical part. I've found a few websites that will scour our bill and request refunds for any packages that are delivered late, but I can't find any reviews comparing any of the websites. For example, some of the ones I found are RefundGeeks, 71Lbs, and RefundRetreiver. Does anyone have experience with any of these?

How to Generate Leads, Sales, etc. Through Facebook

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 04:53 PM PDT

I started a Facebook page to determine if there was enough interest in a party rental business. I've been using Facebook to boost ads and I get plenty of views, likes/reactions, but no conversion. I've even gotten a comment such as "We need to get this for the kids," but not a single message or phone call inquiring about pricing, availability, etc.

Do other small businesses have success converting FB ads into sales? Should I determine that FB isn't the channel I should be using? Or is this a sign that there isn't enough in my business all together?

How to reduce risk when firing a volatile contractor

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 11:31 AM PDT

I need advice and Google isn't being particularly helpful. I own a small counseling center and all of my therapists are independent contractors in an at-will work state.

Last month, I had to speak with a therapist who has been working with me for over a year because of patient and staff complaints about her behavior. Long story short, I tried to coach her in a kind manner, provide her resources and support to help her succeed and gave her feedback that although this behavior needs to be addressed, I know that this is not reflective of her baseline performance and I am confident that we can work past this.

She took the feedback extremely poorly: crying, slamming her office door, submitting her resignation notice on the spot. She has had other similar tantrums in the office and I was honestly avoiding talking to her because I was scared of her reaction. But, when it came to my attention that her behavior was affecting both patients and staff, I couldn't avoid it any longer.

Since then, she has made the work environment extremely hostile and is selectively giving certain team members (including me) the silent treatment.

Her resignation was a complete relief, because, as a therapist, I am seriously concerned for the well-being of her patient's. However, her contract requires 90 days notice (which she gave) in order to appropriately and therapeuticly say good-bye to her patients.

Because of her erratic, vindictive, and emotionally dysregulated behavior, I want to terminate her prior to when her 90 days is up. But, I'm terrified she may retaliate by making up false allegations. I actually overheard her talking on the phone about how she wants to "fuck me over."

I am not concerned about her being physically violent. I am, however, concerned about her "getting back at me" in other ways, such as making false allegations to my licensing board, bad reviews on our website, other defamation issues.

I have contemporaneously documented her issues and behavior. I have tried to be as kind and supportive as possible (despite the nastiness I receive in return). I know I have cause to terminate her and I know that I run a highly ethical practice and here would be no truthful valid complaint against my license.

Are there any legal agreements or other forms I can try to have her sign at the time of departure to minimize risk to my business reputation, license, and income? Thanks!

Just opened an S Corp for my businesses. What to do about buying a new car?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 06:09 PM PDT

I just opened an S Corp for the few businesses I have and I'm curious how it works when buying a new car. I've done some reading but cant really find anything for my particular situation. The corp grosses around 50k a year. I'd like to buy a Tesla Model 3. Am I able to "loan" my corporation some money from my personal savings and have the corporation purchase the car? I would want to finance around 20k for the car as well. How would this work for my taxes with depreciating the car?

I use my car for 80% business and 20% personal so I think it makes sense for the car to be in the corporations name but I'm not 100% sure how this all works quite yet. Any insight would be great. Thanks!

I am a web developer going solo again.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 12:05 PM PDT

So I have been developing websites since the mid 90s. I started my own company back then, and was doing quite well for myself. A national company brought me out to work for them and since then I have been a company man for 3 different companies.

I am now leaving all of that behind to start my own company again, really missed the freedom I had.

I will mainly be focusing on 3 main target audiences, small business, real estate/property management and the hospitality industry. I will still be offering my services to other that need my services.

With companies like Wix, Go Daddy, Fiverrr and sites like WordPress, am i really that much of a fool to go this route now?

Polling r/smallbusiness: NY publication requirement for LLCs

Hey all, glad to find this subreddit today. I am approaching my publication requirement due date for my sole member LLC. Did you all complete the requirement? Why or why not? This seems like an archaic requirement to me that wouldn't make or break in a law suit or audit.

Business Owners! Do you have a succession plan for your small business? If yes, what does that typically look like? If no, how would you respond to being approached and what is the best approach?

Imagine that you need to build a website for your business. How would you go about it?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 12:22 PM PDT

    Hello there,

Because I'm starting a web design business, I'm working on market research. I wanted to ask you a few questions, which will help me to serve my customers well, grow their businesses and meet their expectations.

If you could answer them, I'm going to be very thankful! And I also can find some way to help you for free.

    So here we go:

    • Why do you need a website?
    • What do you expect from it?/What do you want to achieve with it?
    • Would you use professional help?
    • If yes, how would you choose one? What would help you? for instance: guarantee
    • Why wouldn't you choose a particular agency/ professional? for instance: lack of trust
    • If you'd have certainty that your website is going to make you money, how much would you invest in it? Would you pay more?

Thank you for your answers! And please, share your thoughts.

Looking into buying a branded new car dealership

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 03:57 PM PDT

I have a background in used car sales and own an auto body shop. I got a notice from a brokerage that there are 3 branded of these dealerships in my city for sale. Does or has anyone owned one of these?

I'm wondering why all the owners are requiring the seller to purchase the real estate along with the business instead of a business only purchase. Is that a requirement from the franchisor?

What is the revenue and profit margin for these kind of dealerships? I'm going to take a look at the financials soon, I want to make sure its up to par with other dealerships.
