    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Fundamentals Friday Jun 28, 2019

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 01:09 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on fundamentals, but if fundamentals aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against fundamentals here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Most fundamentals are updated every 3 months due to the fact that corporations release earnings reports every quarter, so traders are always speculating at what those earnings will say, and investors may change the size of their holdings based on those reports. Expect a lot of volatility around earnings, but it usually doesn't matter if you're holding long term, but keep in mind the importance of earnings reports because a trend of declining earnings or a decline in some other fundamental will drive the stock down over the long term as well.

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

    Market Cap - Shares Outstanding - Volume - Dividend - EPS - P/E Ratio - EPS Q/Q - PEG - Sales Q/Q - Return on Assets (ROA) - Return on Equity (ROE) - BETA - SMA - quarterly earnings

If you have a basic question, for example "what is EBITDA," then google "investopedia EBITDA" and click the Investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

Those who have jumped onto Rite Aid should remember Kohl's which has dropped 39% since partnering with Amazon

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 07:40 AM PDT

Rite Aid has a lot of debt and long standing problems from which the Amazon partnership will probably only provide a moderate reprieve

This is not a recommendation to buy or sell. Stocks are not suitable for everybody. Please do your own research.

Airlines are still cancelling thousands of flights because of the Boeing 737 Max grounding

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 05:01 AM PDT

    https://www.marketwatch.com/story/airlines-are-still-cancelling-thousands-of-flights-because-of-the-boeing-737-max-grounding-2019-06-28

Southwest Airlines, which has 34 of the aircraft in its fleet, has cancelled flights that were scheduled to be flown on those planes through Oct. 1, the airline announced on Thursday. Previously, Southwest had cancelled planned 737 Max flights through Sept. 2.

United Airlines, which has 14 Max aircraft in its fleet, announced Wednesday that it is cancelling flights that were set to take place with these planes through Sept. 3. That equates to around 1,290 flights in July (between 40 and 45 flights a day) and 1,900 flights in August (roughly 60 flights a day).

The 737 Max ordeal could lead to higher travel costs for consumers

    Firstrade feedback from first month

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 10:18 AM PDT

I set up an account with firstrade about a month and a half ago....theyre ok I guess....trades execute way faster than RH....they have a lot of cluttery bells and whistles on their website that are relatively difficult to navigate. The really really really crappy thing ive notiiced is that they do NOT update your position price like at all. I sell spreads, and Ill check the price of one of my spreads and then check it against their ask/bid in a sell window or on another website and it's never updated. I find this very crappy and unprofessional. Anyone else have experience with this. Also, I have the realtime updates enabled. So it aint that!

So RTN is getting destroyed even though the sector is green because some ashole with less than 0.5% ownership in UTX doesn't like the merger?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 11:08 AM PDT

I mean all the activitists combined have around 1% ownership not even close to having enough voting power and the stock moves down 10% in a week because they don't like the merger ?

Am i missing something? Shouldn't it actually go up since utx is recovered?

EU, South American countries agree on draft free trade treaty

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 02:08 PM PDT

    https://www.dw.com/en/eu-south-american-countries-agree-on-draft-free-trade-treaty/a-49406638

The European Union and the Mercosur bloc of South American countries have agreed on the draft text of a free-trade deal. Both sides have been negotiating the agreement for almost 20 years.

The European Union and the Mercosur bloc of four South American countries — Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay — have agreed to draft wording for a free-trade deal after almost 20 years of talks, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said Friday.

He said the historic deal was "sending a strong signal," calling it the "largest trade agreement the EU has ever concluded."

Representatives from both sides have have been putting the final touches on the treaty's wording in Brussels since Wednesday. The announcement comes after 39 rounds of negotiations that began in 2000.

Talks intensified after Donald Trump was elected president of the United States on a protectionist platform. That forced the EU halt talks with the US and look elsewhere to shore up trade partnerships. The EU has recently signed trade agreements with Canada, Mexico, and Japan.

This can be great news for many South American and European companies.

    • The Dow and S&P 500 are having their best month since January. The Dow is having its best June performance since 1938. The S&P 500, seeing its largest June gain since 1955, is set to conclude its best first half of a year since 1998. (CNBC)

(CNBC)
    • President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping are poised to write the latest chapter in their globe-shaking trade war when they meet tomorrow morning in Japan. Trade will be at the top of the agenda for both leaders as the nations remain locked in a tariff battle, along with the Trump administration's Huawei restrictions. (CNBC)
    • Trump told Russian President Vladimir Putin today not to meddle in the 2020 election, appearing to make light of a scandal. It was the first time the two leaders have had a formal face-to-face meeting since a controversial high-profile summit in Helsinki last July. (CNBC & Reuters)
    • Russia's Vladimir Putin says liberalism has 'outlived its purpose' (CNBC)
    • The first round of presidential primary Democratic debate is complete, and post-debate polls and pundits showed a few clear winners and losers of the two nights of debates in Miami. Among those winning favor were Kamala Harris, Julian Castro and Cory Booker. Beto O'Rourke and Joe Biden, the frontrunner, were seen as losers. (CNBC)
    • The most personal attack of last night's Democratic debate was aimed not at Trump, but at former Vice President Biden. Harris called out Biden on the issue of race, saying the way he recently described his past working relationship with two segregationist lawmakers was "hurtful." (CNBC)
    • Biden urges building on Obamacare instead of adopting Bernie Sanders' 'Medicare for All' (CNBC)

    Ninja Trader simulated training profits?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:24 PM PDT

It's my 3rd day simulated day trading since I learned how to get it working. I lost $100,000 the first day but made it up the next 2 days. Then started a 1,000 account and brought it up to $10.000 in a couple hours. I'm using NijnaTraders real time trading data by minute. https://imgur.com/a/NJOFo1w

Is it really that easy to trade and make that kinda of profit? If so I need to start trading real money ASAP.

r/Stocks semiannual arguments against TA, fundamental analysis, etc - June 2019

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 09:52 AM PDT

Main purpose of this thread is to facilitate common arguments against technical analysis and fundamental analysis, such as "TA doesn't work" or "learn to read charts."

Feel free to even argue against quantitative analysis or naked trading. You can even argue against trading stock options and even stocks its self ("zero sum game"); whatever you want as long as you're respectful to each other and follow the rules of r/stocks.

This post will be linked to other posts and tracked through Reddit search: See past arguments here.

IBD Leaderboard - Worth it? Opinions?

I'm just curious if anybody has experience using this and what their opinions are. The main pricing tier is probably more than I'd want to pay given my relative small stature investment wise but just wondering if others have used and like the service.
