Uncertainty in Asia’s Markets due to protests in Hong Kong

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 04:49 PM PDT

Hong Kong's stock market was down on Wednesday. The Hang Seng, which ended the day at 1.7% lower, suffered from a selloff thanks to Wharf Real Estate Investment, down 5.4% and New World Development, which fell 4.2%.

"We're going to see a hit on the markets because the ramifications of the bill are so significant," Richard Harris, chief executive officer of Port Shelter Investment Management, told CNN.

Francis Lun, chief economist of GE Oriental Financial Group, doesn't think markets will crash.

"The economy will keep on humming along, and as far as the political scene is concerned, China has control of everything. What can you do? Everyone will protest, but it will remain the same," he said.

The protests could drive more investors in both mainland China and Hong Kong into Bitcoin, continuing a trend Forbes contributor Jeff Kauflin reported on in May.

Chinese customers have trouble trading institutionally due to regulatory uncertainty so its tough to gauge the size of that market. "Most of OTC trading in China happens on WeChat groups," Dave Chapman, chairman of OSL, a Hong Kong OTC brokerage that reportedly trades more than $1 billion a month told Forbes. "You don't have a reputable, 24-hours, 7-day-a-week operation in China." Chapman estimates that up to 20% of global crypto trading volume originates in China.

Those who have been successful in the stock market, how did you learn the whole process and the understanding of it?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 08:00 PM PDT

I am keen to get started but I am still learning. I am doing a degree in finance so I am learning about it there. I am doing tonnes of research online and have looked at stock trends. I even bought the book " The intelligent investor". I get the main idea but there is still some stuff I am not sure about. How can I learn the whole process the best way?

What does it mean when a stock is given a buy rating, but is also given a price target half its current value?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 01:14 PM PDT

Isn't that contradictory? Why buy if you expect the price to drop 50%?

Fed meeting and market going into the meeting

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 03:42 AM PDT

I think the market has some positive momentum, and the market generally trades positive going into the Fed meeting. G20 meeting is the 28th. I have some QQQs. I am going net flat into the 28th. However, now is positive on all measures. China's stock market is the weak link in the global stock market indicies though. I am looking at shorting FXI.

Is there a way to measure how much overall market trends influence the price of an individual stock?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 11:48 AM PDT

So one of the things I always like to do when looking at the price history of a stock is to compare it to the DJIA or S&P 500 to see if it was just rising or falling with the overall market conditions, or if it was changing because of something specific to that stock.

Is there a way to actually quantify this, i.e. see how much of a price fluctuation is due to the aggregate market? I'm not so great at math, but iirc this would be something like a correlation coefficient in statistics. Thoughts?
