Is a coming recession as bad as people think it will be?

    Posted: 12 Jun 2019 03:03 PM PDT

I've heard that the collective memory is poor in that we tend to believe the past will repeat itself. Since the crash of '08 with a subsequent miraculous bull run, it seems everyone is in constant anticipation that something will break it, and a recession will be upon us, perhaps resembling somewhat like the last crash. However, Howard Marks notes that although there are problems in our economy, there are also aspects to feel optimistic about, and we're unlikely to experience anything remotely so severe. I'm uncertain of what posture is appropriate. If any investors have lived through multiple past cycles of boom-and-bust, what do you anticipate is coming? What do you think it will feel like? If I'm truly a long term investor, should I continue holding my positions with the knowledge that you truly outlive any pullback without much permanent consequence?

Elon Musk says 'there is not a demand problem' with the Model 3

    Posted: 12 Jun 2019 03:11 AM PDT

    https://edition.cnn.com/2019/06/11/investing/elon-musk-tesla-annual-meeting/index.html

Tesla hosted its annual shareholder meeting Tuesday. A lot — a whole lot — happened since the last time CEO Elon Musk faced stockholders in this formal setting a year ago.

There's been a months-long battle between Musk and the Securities and Exchange Commission, shareholder lawsuits over his allegedly false claim that he had the money to take Tesla private, and a revolving door of executive shakeups. And that's just the boardroom drama.

But Musk made it clear that he didn't want to rehash the past: "I don't think it's worth going over those things," he told the audience.

Instead, he painted a promising outlook of Tesla's future, telling the room that Tesla's Model 3 sedan is selling faster than Tesla can build them. He said that self-driving capabilities are just a year away. Musk also hyped the new vehicle models that are in Tesla's pipeline, including the Model Y, a lower-cost SUV, as well as a semi truck and a pickup.

The economy is more leveraged to the stock market than almost ever before.

    Posted: 12 Jun 2019 06:12 PM PDT

Households own a large amount of stock. As of Q1 2019, U.S. households had $124.7 trillion in assets. $88.9 trillion of that is financial assets, $17.5 trillion is corporate equities, and $8.8 trillion is mutual fund shares. In Q1, equity allocation was 29.6% which is below the cycle high of 31.3% in Q3 2018 because of the correction in Q4 2018. Interestingly, the allocation fell to 27.7% in Q4 and that is equal to the Q2 2007 peak. The only higher peak than Q3 2018 was in the late 1990s/early 2000s. Keep in mind that through inductive reasoning we can see that this high allocation isn't necessarily a problem. That's because valuations are more important than how much stocks U.S. households own. U.S. households aren't the only buyers of stocks.

The point here isn't that the stock market is in a bubble that is about to collapse. Rather, it's about how important the stock market has become to the economy. The reflexivity theory, which explains how the market can affect the economy, is in full force given how much money consumers have in equities. It's more important for politicians and policy makers to keep the market up than almost ever before. Perma bears who are skeptical of the Fed hate when the Fed ever reacts to the stock market. The reality is stocks reflect expectations and impact the economy. If the Fed didn't care about the stock market, it would be a mistake.

    Net worth volatility

As you can see from the chart above, in Q4 2018, the change in household net worth as a percentage of disposable income had the largest decline since the 2008 financial crisis. Furthermore, the increase in Q1 was the largest single quarter jump since the tech bubble. That's what happens when households own a lot of stock and the market has major moves to the downside and upside.

How Important Is Stock Market To Economy?

This is a question for all my fellow traders who have actual day jobs that aren't trading. How much time are you dedicating to the stock market and trading daily? How much dd do you have time for? What about the people with families and kids like I. Same questions to you. What kind of returns are you happy with?

How to obtain WeWork (We Company) IPO prospectus

    Posted: 12 Jun 2019 01:34 PM PDT

Does anyone know how I can get my hands on the We Company IPO prospectuses that have been (confidentially) filed with the SEC? (Initially in December and later amended in April)

I am looking to get some insight into the company's finances and revenues (more granular than the publicly known headline number of $1.8bn loss on sales in a similar range)

I reckon these documents typically leak somehow, I just haven't been able to locate it anywhere.. can this sub help?

    My newbie experience daytrading

    Posted: 12 Jun 2019 01:14 AM PDT

    I've recently started daytrading
It usually goes decent in the mornings where i make $15 here, $50$ there, in short minutes then I do 1 or 2 bad trades where I lose all profit from earlier trades during the day
For instance, today so far (10 am here I am now, market opens 9am) I did 3 decent trades and made around $60

    Then I did 1 trade, lost $100.
Usually it's because I always hold my positions for waay too long when I start losing money, making it even worse. But I often think "it can't get worse than this right? :d " then it just keeps going down and all earlier profits is gone..
Anyone have experience with this, how I can avoid these mistakes?

    Online Brokerage vs In Person

    Posted: 12 Jun 2019 04:29 AM PDT

Newbie here looking to get into investing. I've been doing a bit of research trying to find which online brokerage account would cost the least in terms of minimum deposit and the least in terms of fee for every share purchased because I feel like online brokerage would be more time efficient but are there pro and cons between the two? Which one is better?

I currently bank with Bank of America and they have Merrill Edge as a subsidiary iirc but they have a 6.95 fee for every share

$BEMG Huge news out. Partnering with brokerage ChoiceTrade. This will be a massive partnership in the industry.

    Posted: 12 Jun 2019 06:13 AM PDT

No wonder they been quiet lately - this is a MASSIVE deal. It all makes sense now.

Someone last night in Discord group found a new filing from BEMG. They are officially moving forward with a name change to MBO holdings inc. Name change alone will put this in dollars. I think massive merger on the horizon.

Also, in the new filing, it shows their share reduction is now complete, so there has been a 75% reduction in outstanding shares. We have a big mover here.

How do I set a stop loss AND a limit order at the same time? (New to stocks)

    Posted: 12 Jun 2019 01:17 AM PDT

For example, if I have a $5 stock and I want it to automatically sell if it reaches $4 or if it reaches $6. If neither of those conditions happen, I will keep that position. Is there any option for that?
