Progressive won't compare my totalled 2007 Ford Focus to 2007 Ford Focuses - help?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 04:04 PM PDT

I'll try to keep this as short as possible. My wife's car was totalled while parked (link in comments). It was a 2007 Ford Focus Zx5 SE automatic. When assessing our car's worth, insurance will only look at the EXACT same model is going for in our area. Surprisingly, there are no exact comparisons within 60 miles of our D.C. zipcode.... so they found 3 examples that are 120-135 miles away in the boonies and said they could give us $3,100 (originally offered $2,800).

HOWEVER, here's the kicker -- I can find other models and trims of 2007 Ford Focuses with similar mileage to ours all day long in our area. I showed them that these other models (e.g., coupe or sedan instead of a hatchback like ours) consistently go for at least $3,500-$4,500, and they are INFERIOR models to ours! Our four-door hatchback SE was worth more new, and it should be worth more now. But I just want our reimbursement to match the price of these inferior models, I'm not even looking for more money at this point. I just want to be able to buy an inferior replacement.....but Progressive is saying that comparing our Zx5 to a Zx3 would be comparing "apples to oranges" and their system doesn't allow that, blah blah blah.

What options do I have here? My Dad said to tell them I'll see them in court and represent myself - I got nothing to lose, and they'll settle so they don't have to bother sending a lawyer in such a petty case. I'm not sure if that would work, or if it's true I don't have anything to lose.... Any tips or thoughts are much appreciated!

TLDR: Our Ford Focus hatchback was totalled. There are no Focus hatchbacks for sale in our area. Progressive lowballed and won't let me use evidence of Ford Focus sedans in our area as evidence that our car was worth more than they are offering.

    Declined home owners insurance (Lemonade)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 05:42 PM PDT

    Hello all,

Looking for some advice and past experience with this.

My wife and I have previously had renters insurance with Lemonade Insurance and absolutely loved the company. Unfortunately, someone broke into our home and stole valuables for $2-3000 earlier this year. We filed a claim thinking this was acceptable given that we were paying for insurance and had a legitimate claim. This was our first claim ever for myself and my wife.

Now that we are in the process of buying a home, I wanted to get homeowners insurance with Lemonade. However, coverage was denied by their bot because of my past claims history (single claim).

This is very frustrating. Does anyone have any experience with this and/or with Lemonade?

    Many thanks!

BCBS FEP Basic wants to bill medically necessary Botox as outpatient surgery. Is that normal/correct?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2019 03:37 AM PDT

I recently got BCBS in Texas and am attempting to get a Botox treatment for a medically necessary issue they said does not require prior approval. However, they do say that that it needs to be billed as outpatient surgery. With my previous insurance, it was billed as an office visit, so I'm not clear on why it needs to be billed as surgery. Does anyone know if I'm being given the correct info by BCBS?

    Settlement question after car accident

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 08:24 PM PDT

I was rear ended in VA a couple months ago by a distracted driver at a stop light. The damage to my vehicle was $4,000 and the damage to hers was undetectable since she admitted at the scene to previous damage to her pickup.

I went to urgent care the day after the accident with neck and back pain. They took an x-ray and I was told it was a soft tissue injury. Physical therapy was highly recommended.

I was recently discharged from physical therapy after 25 sessions. I didn't miss any work since I am a housewife but wasn't able to do much housework for a while. I had to quit strength training (outside of physical therapy exercises) and exercising for months at the suggestion of my physical therapist. I missed a couple races which I do every year.

Since I am very active and had to cut all of my activity (strength training, cardio, strenuous housework, etc.) for months, it has been rough going from being active to sitting around and doing absolutely nothing. When you don't work, your life becomes quite dull when you can't do the things you normally do. I was scared to do a lot of things, even if they probably wouldn't cause me pain, in fear of making things worse.

The biggest thing for me was going from exercising a couple hours a day to doing nothing. I didn't miss any "work" but considering exercising is my hobby and is what I do all day aside from housework, I feel like my life has been severely affected by this accident. It will also take me a while to get back to where I was with strength training (I need to progress safely) and my endurance is absolutely shot, which will take time after taking months off.

Anyway, I know the next step will be to discuss a settlement amount and I was curious if anyone had an idea of what I should expect. Does $5,000 sound like too much for a bodily injury claim? The insurance company is already covering my physical therapy. I've read many, many threads from this subreddit over the past couple of weeks and I know that I shouldn't expect much from soft tissue injuries.

Had to drop class after motorcycle collision. Should I add that to my claim?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 11:12 PM PDT

*Title should probably say can instead of should.

I tried researching student compensation but didnt get many results.

I was in a motorcycle collision a couple days ago in VA. The other vehicle was determined to be at fault and his insurance is taking 100% liability. I was in a 5 week summer course, but after the accident and being forced to miss a day of class (which put me behind due to the accelerated pace), I realized I wasnt focused mentally on the course, along with the physical pain Im still in (fractured foot being the worst of it) and decided to drop.

The adjuster asked me if I had a job and full time student is technically my job. Now I am wondering if I can ask to be compensated for the class. I might be expected to pay back some financial aid and tuition.

Additionally, I am an Air Force veteran using the GI Bill and dropping the course means I wont receive my housing allowance for rent. I would like to be compensated for that also.

Had it not been for the accident, I would still be in the class. I believe my reasoning is justifiable and in my rights. What do you guys think?

    Golf Cart Accident

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 04:46 PM PDT

I was in a golf cart accident approximately 1 year ago. There were 3 other involved, but me and another passenger turned out pretty bad. I had a total of 5 surgeries and still have limited mobility and was told it was a "life changing event". I have been in discussions with the drivers insurance company.

They recently gave me est. of what could be the pay out. They would be splitting the remainder of the policy 50/50 with other individual, after medical liens. My question is typically with car insurance it seems the max is ~300K. But are there not reasons to lift these limits, for extreme circumstances?

    Prior Authorization Question (Medical)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 06:55 PM PDT

For Inpatient services my insurance states "THESE BENEFITS ARE PROVIDED WHEN ADMITTED OR AUTHORIZED BY THE MEMBER'S NETWORK MEDICAL GROUP"

Does this mean if my Medical Groups Hospital performs a procedure than by default they have authorized it and it is covered?

[OH] lost with health insurance options

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 02:53 PM PDT

I am in the process of establishing my own business in horse training and coaching. I believe technically I'm an "independent contractor" but working out of an established facility. Lost my job with benefits 2 months ago and I'm completely lost on where to go from here. My weekly wage varies on my lessons which can be anywhere from 2-6 a week, totally inconsistent. Works out to about $20/ hour but in reality is barely nothing with existing bills, so I'm not sure where to go from here without paying $1,000 a month.

Home insurance claim due to tornado outside adjuster?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 01:51 PM PDT

I already had an adjuster come out issued me a check on the spot and then told me to submit supplements for additional things

Well as soon as I submitted my fence and ac unit as well as additional roof damage the desk rep said they are going to have another adjuster out

Is that bad for me? The term was "outside adjuster"

They also wanted the roofing contractor to be there but did not say anything about the fence contractor

What does "after deductible" and "deductible waived" mean?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 10:14 AM PDT

I'm trying to decide between two health insurance plans - an HMO and a tiered plan. There's a little recommendation tool that told me the HMO is a better deal....but I'm confused because the tiered plan looks better. The thing I don't understand is "after deductible" and "deductible waived."

The HMO deductible is higher at $1,350 (though functionally $850 since there are employer contributions) while the tiered plan is $250. The HMO plan takes less from my paycheck ($70 monthly) vs the tiered plan takes out more ($100 monthly).

For thinks like specialist visits, Rx, etc....the HMO plan says "You pay a $40 copay After deductible." The tiered plan says "You pay a $40 copay. Deductible waived." Can someone clarify what this means? I'm confused. It looks to me like if the deductible is waived on the tiered plan that I would only be paying $40 for a visit, whereas the HMO would have me meet my $850 deductible before I get to pay only $40 for a visit.

If "deductible" is waived for everything except inpatient and surgery....what exactly would it go to?

    Property Insurance Payout Scenario

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 11:50 AM PDT

I had some water damage in a multifamily I own.

I've done as much of the repairs as I'm going to do and there is still funds leftover from the direct repair program.

It's around 7K so the mortgagee has to be listed and unfortunately it looks like the intermediary insuranceclaimcheck.com is a nightmare to deal with.

What happens if I just never complete repairs? Does that 7K just sit in escrow until I payoff my mortgage?

If I paid out my mortgage would it be returned to me eventually even if 20 years from now?

This is like peanuts value wise less than 1% of the property value.

Do I tell new insurance company about an accident I just got in? New policy starts July 15.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 04:01 PM PDT

I just hit a pole in a parking lot. Will probably need a new passenger door. My deductive is $500 and reported it to my current and old insurance. I figure that'll be worth it.

I am switching insurance providers on July 15 due to a move out of state. I have already set up and paid my first month bill for the new insurance starting July 15. Do I need to inform my new insurance company of this claim I'm putting in with my former insurance? How much will my premiums go up? I haven't been in any other accident or ever made a claim in my 15 years of driving.

I've been offered an independent claims adjuster job. Should I accept it?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 07:31 PM PDT

A bit context. I live and work in Canada. I currently work for the primary provincial auto insurance provider, primarily processing modified/modified collector vehicle applications, VIN applications, and vehicle registrations. I'll admit, it's pretty chill. The pay is $49330.00 a year, or $1299.00 per pay cheque (net). Thing is though, I find that there's a fair bit of politics between supervisors, and to be honest, they sometimes come across as abrasive, stuck in their ways, and would prefer to gossip instead of helping their teams. While I'm well aware that there's no point in trying to change them, rather my daily grind at work is like navigating a mine field of politics, and I struggle with believing that work should be like this. As any mildly miserable working professional, I'm sure you're well aware of the "promise of a better job opening", and I'll admit, that idea is in the back of my mind but do I really want to work a frustrating job for the next few years? No, not really. So that said, I was recruited about a month ago by a private claims adjusting company, despite not having any experience within claims. While I don't want to go into too many details, I can confirm that they're a subsidiary of a massive insurance company overseas. The starting wage is $52500.00, and they offer for the most part the same benefits as my current job. I'm just concerned that I may not be cut out to be an adjuster, as the ones working for my current employer are known to go on stress leave. Is a claims adjuster position as hostile as the stories make it out to be? Or is it like any other job where there are good days, and bad days, but overall it's good? Any thoughts, or advice is greatly appreciated!

Car insurance wont pay me full amount

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 06:08 PM PDT

So I got into accident on my semi-new car. I do still owe couple grand on it which i plan on paying it off (FYI I can pay off my car at anytime I want. I just never wanted to cause my interest rate was 0.99% fixed). The problem I have is that the insurance used a picture estimate to LOW BALL me the amount and send me a check. I called them and they refuse to give me more and stated that I can take the car to the auto-shop and if they find more damages the shop can submit a supplement and they will pay the shop. Like i said I want to repair the car myself and pay it off and possibly trade it in or sell it for a new car. I am going to get a estimate from one of there approved shop and submit it. Any chance they will give me the money just like this first check?

FYI the estimate they give me is missing so much damage. They only put the cost of my bumper etc. The accident hit the inside shield and broke the condesor etc which they didn't include. The side of the car has scratches on it etc. The person I talked to seemed firm on making me go to the shop to get it repaired.

Sometime between last night and this morning my parked car was hit and the drivers side side mirror was damaged/torn off. The guy who hit it left a business card. I had to go to work so I drove to work without thinking to take pictures or call anyone before moving my vehicle. Aside from calling the guy what all should I do/need to do? What should I ask the guy when I call him?

Got a new policy proposal and wanted to have it reviewed

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 04:02 PM PDT

I got a new policy proposal from my agent after my rates went up this year. I've looked it over but believe the limits are too low and some key information is missing. Can someone please look it over and let me know what you think. I've already noticed that the personal property and dwelling are flipped and will have the agent correct it. The policy is for 2 cars and a condominium.

    3rd Party Insurance's Body Shop Low-Balled Appraisal..What to do?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 02:34 PM PDT

My car was hit while parked. I filed a claim with Mercury (the driver's ins. co.), who sent me to one of their "preferred shops" for an estimate. The estimate does not include replacing the obviously cracked headlight, which leads me to doubt the estimate altogether. Mercury is being pushy to bring my car into that shop so they can get started on the repairs.

Thing is, I would like to "cash out." How can I be sure to get an honest and fair amount at this point? I'm in California.

Flood Insurance - < Half of House in zone AE - Crazy Expensive

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 07:37 AM PDT

We've been paying for flood insurance since we bought our house in 2012, can't recall exact numbers but our 2018 bill was close to $4800 and we were notified that our rate is increasing by $600 (current coverage $250k building/$20k contents). I contacted insurance agent and increased the deductible from $5k to the max of $10k which will reduce it a bit, but it still feels like a TON of money.

Insurance agent said the only other option was to hire a surveyor to generate an elevation certificate, but there's no guarantee that will result in a lower rate, there's a possibility it could cause a rate increase.

Only a portion of the east half of our house is within zone AE on our flood maps (Living room, dining room, maybe part of kitchen).

Looking for suggestions of what action to take next, gamble on an elevation certificate, contact someone who can look at our case individually (does that even exist, and would that be FEMA directly)? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Can my father remove me from his health insurance if I am a qualifying dependent under 26? How long would it take for it to go into effect?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 09:39 AM PDT

Long story short, I'm 23 and seeking, for lack of a better term, "gender-affirming" healthcare, which my parents are opposed to. I'm currently on my father's insurance, a Blue Cross MA PPO plan, which covers the services I am getting, but because it's his insurance and I'm doing things he disapproves of, he is threatening to take me off the insurance so he doesn't have any financial involvement. I'm having trouble figuring out when someone is allowed to do that, so I'm wondering if he is able to, and if he is, how long I have to get new insurance. I currently work at a place that has an insurance plan available, but I'm not on it because I'm on my dad's.

Blue Cross of California Physical Therapy Preauth Through AIM?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 01:11 PM PDT

I currently work at a PT clinic. Relatively last minute Blue Cross is going to start requiring pre-authorization for Physical Therapy for most of our PPO patients. This is supposed to go into effect on July 1, 2019. We have been having nothing but issues with this entire process since it opened on 6/24/2019. Has anyone been able to get more than 5 visits per patient. AIM has suggested we have a conference call with Blue Cross and them for every single patient, which is almost impossible since its approximately a 20-30 minute wait every time we call AIM. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get more of these patients pre-authorizated and how to get them more visits per pre-authorization?
