Posted: 15 Jun 2019 08:44 AM PDT First for some context - our family business basically imports clothes from Thailand and sells it here in my country. We currently have 4 brick-and-mortar shops, but the bulk of our clients are wholesalers who own department stores, boutiques, and the like in the region. I finished my bachelor's degree two weeks ago and was planning to apply to entry-level jobs in my chosen industry, however, my parents practically begged me to help out with the family business. I didn't want to directly work under them or with them so I offered to take our business online. Essentially, I'd be building the e-commerce and retail arm of the business. Seeing as I'm fresh from university and thrust into an industry that I have little to no knowledge of, I really want to gain some insight and some advice on what mistakes you made in your business, what pitfalls to avoid, what goals to achieve, etc. I'm also taking some online courses on digital marketing, SEO, and the like to better prepare me for this role so I would also appreciate any advice regarding that. Thank you in advance and hope you all have a great day! Good luck to all the small business owners out there :) [link] [comments] |
Before you decide to start a Business: Posted: 15 Jun 2019 10:26 AM PDT Most of you here don't want to "follow the normal path", you all want to live an extraordinary life, that's likely why you're here. Many may have only recently realized that a small business is "their way", many (I'll go as far as guessing that the majority) are young. While that youth comes with the benefits of energy and time, it also means that you're inexperienced, broke, or both. You don't have any money, or anyone to talk to about this with or bounce ideas with other than people online. Now, listen, I'm not here to discourage anyone at all. Really, I personally love small businesses and think it's an amazing tool of capitalism. The idea of owning or running a business is sexy, it's appealing, it promises financial freedom, social status, the potential to change the world and no one to boss your around. And also, once you start making it, the ability to do whatever the fuck you want. But listen, man, when we're young we want to take advantage of our time, we don't want to waste it, especially when you're focused on making a change of some sorts in the world. We know we're at a stage where everyone says that we have to work hard (which is true), we gotta use that youth. And we have this fear that time's going to pass us by, that the chance to strike it big is going to pass us by. And this all goes back to us wanting to stand out, to be different, which is great! And we're willing to go through all that because we know it's worth it… But is a business the smartest way to attack these concerns and goals for you? Notice the emphasis on you. I mean, ask yourself this: do you want to start a business because Elon Musk is cool? Because Jeff Bezos is dirt rich? Because of the case studies about some dude making thousands a month with his dropshipping store on a Facebook group? Or several of them? Or is starting a business the best way that YOU have thought of, to reach that point at which you want to be in life? Did you figure it out on your own? I know I'm putting a huge emphasis on you as a person, but that's just because of how much I see people not using their own brains. Think, we all wanna be smart. Isn't the smartest thing to do to think for yourself? To figure out what you want to do? Maybe, what you should figure out first is your purpose, what you want. Figuring out what you want to build first, will allow you to work on the best tools for the job. And yes, business is an amazing tool, but so is a craft, a movement, a community, politics, sciences and so on. So maybe what you have to ask yourself, is whether you've figured out that purpose, so you can go ahead think "how do I do that, then". And it's only going to be you who figures that out, not any course, not any person, not any coach, not anyone here trying to sell you shit. If you want money, then yeah business, if you want to enact change through monetary power, yeah, business. But if you want to discover something, then maybe science; if you want to heal people, then maybe a career in medicine; if you want to implement laws and fight corruption, then a political career or a social leader. Remember, just because business is so popularized nowadays, doesn't mean that it's the right path for you. So how do you find your purpose, at such a young age, or at any age, for that matter? Ask yourself some questions:
You might find 1, 2, 3,4 or 5 things that you want to try out, which is fine, it doesn't need to be one and you don't need to figure out a master plan for your life right now, just make a flexible plan with what introspection has granted you and stick with it. Most things worth your time will likely cause you some level of stress, anyway, so why pick one that isn't the most appropriate for you? And even if you make a mistake and pick the wrong thing, wouldn't you rather live through your own mistake, rather than somebody else's? Anyway, this was pretty long and many of you who've walked through more of life may take it as obvious. But this sub is full of younger people or people trying to figure themselves out and when all they see is promises of great wealth or discouragement, then I think that the quality of the sub itself drops significantly and we miss out on using it to its full potential TL;DR: for those who don't want to read, there's a video version here [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Jun 2019 12:36 PM PDT Hi All- We have a semi long-term customer (1.5 yrs) who buys our product for resale on their platform. There has not been an issue with them paying and so about 7-8 months ago they went to Net 30. We have had no issues until the most recent order. They purchased their standard order (~$11000) and received it in March. We have no been paid yet and they have stopped replying to us. What is our recourse if they do not pay? Honestly, google has been very unhelpful for me trying to figure out next steps. [link] [comments] |
Lawn Care Business Owners - How fast did you grow and how did you manage it? Posted: 15 Jun 2019 05:12 PM PDT Long story short, I started a lawn care company with basic services like mow/trim/clear excess grass clippings from pavement. We'll do the occasional hedge trim as well. I started this is a gig to make some extra side cash but it's gotten to the point that I have 18 customers and 22 lawns to service. I also gain around 2-3 customers a week. We've been in business 2 months, but holy hell its crazy busy. So here's what we're using to manage it all: 1. Jobber - This is the best application I've found for operations management and it's $145 a month for 10 users.
We just purchased our first company truck and trailer in the past week and we now have 3 push mowers and two riding mowers. I'm not trying to brag about our success, I'm super proud of how quickly we've grown, I'm just nervous that I'm missing something that's gonna bite me later. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Need help and advice for e-commerce startup Posted: 16 Jun 2019 03:14 AM PDT Hey guys i need some advices and reviews. So i have an e-commerce startup and my focus is that i am trying to bridge the gap between sellers and the consumers by providing local small/large businesses an online platform to promote their products and increase brand exposure. Here is the product and service description: Our company's main product and service are to provide an online platform to all the small/large retailers, manufacturers or any individual businesses to sell their products online. The company will bridge the gap between the seller and consumers whereby the company will not have any physical stores or any inventories and it is the small/large local businesses that will have such, that is they themselves will be the suppliers. Subsequently, our company's main focus will be on packaging and shipping procedures. All the orders that are placed on our website/app will be processed and packaged in our packaging facilities and then shipped to the customers. We will provide our registered sellers the freedom to customize on how they want their package to look like, which will be part of our marketing strategy. All the orders will be shipped to their respective owners using our paid/free shipping facilities. To summarize our products and services will be to provide an online platform for all small/large local businesses, packaging and shipping facilities. The success of e-commerce is based on the marketing strategy and since our company does not have a physical store or inventory, our focus will be solely on online marketing and brand exposure and 75 percent of the business will be designed and structured in such a way that we attain successful marketing and brand exposure for our registered and eligible local brands and businesses. Our company does not focus only on e-commerce but also specialises in digital media marketing to ensure brand exposure. Advice i need:
Any help and advice would be very helpful. [link] [comments] |

Auto Folks - Leasing Consulting Business Posted: 15 Jun 2019 10:19 PM PDT I am planning on getting an auto lease consulting service going for new vehicles. This would differ from a regular auto brokerage in that I would not be touching the vehicles at all- I will essentially negotiate the contracts, and send the deal info to customers who will pay me a finder's fee. I am in CA FWIW and see some processes a typical broker would need to go through. My question is - would I fall into this category? I would not consider what I am doing a true auto brokerage since I don't even touch the car let alone enter the dealership and see it more as a consultative service. Essentially looking for answer to Do I need to go through the whole auto broker process to do this the legitimate way or does registering my biz as a service suffice? [link] [comments] |
Looking for advice on hiring an app developer Posted: 15 Jun 2019 09:39 PM PDT We would like to create an app to go along with some content products. It's a pretty simple project and basically an alternative to having someone use a PDF. I put an ad on upwork and got a ton of responses of what looks like a lot of very qualified people. I am very ignorant in this area and wondering if anyone has any advice on what sort of things I should be screening/looking for beyond the basics. I'm used to hiring content/design people. This is a whole other kind of human. I'm not looking to hire anyone off reddit, sorry. I will likely ignore such messages for the sake of efficiency. [link] [comments] |
How to transform a big social media reaction into income/business? Posted: 15 Jun 2019 09:25 PM PDT New territory for me here. I don't want to let this opportunity to pass me by because I don't know what to do with it.. could really use some help here. How have you converted a big social media reaction into increased business opportunities? An image of an individual wearing a shirt I made was posted on Instagram a couple hours ago, and as of now, it has 109,000 likes. I'm not tagged in it and I can't/won't ask for that to be changed... which is kind of a bummer, but was expected. What the heck do I do with this? The biggest reaction I've had prior to this was around 10k, but honestly.. most of my "good" posts get likes in the hundreds, not thousands. I just have no clue what to do with a 109k image. Posted: 15 Jun 2019 06:43 PM PDT I'm curious do most of you business owners borrow money or not. I have a profitable business and will borrow sometimes to buy needed inventory or take advantage of bulk discounts. I'm wondering do most business borrow to grow and leverage your situation or do you not borrow to have a zero debt business. [link] [comments] |
What's the next step with my small business Posted: 15 Jun 2019 02:44 PM PDT Backstory: I am a 6 year old Children's Salon in a bit of a hidden location. Rent is fantastic well below normal and I can open and Close at my own leisure. We make about 120k a year it's a decent living for the three of us workers but I often find trouble keeping hairdressers as our regulars have favorites and new people struggle to find clients. Potential opportunities: A space in our local Mall has been vacant a while. They want way to much for a long term lease but a tenant at will situation(year by year short-term leases) for a little less then double what I pay now. It would be 4 times the size of my current location with an incredible amount of foot traffic. The mall is in a centralized location near multiple highways so it's easy to find and get to. But It would mean having my salon open much longer hours and not getting to choose our days to close. This mall is half empty but they are putting in alot of things there's a good theater right near the location we are considering as well as a children's play place bowling and a skyzone trampoline park but no stores if real substance otherwise. Question about s-corp taxes/basis/distributions Posted: 15 Jun 2019 05:49 PM PDT Hi all, I have a meeting with my accountant next week to go over this but I want to further my knowledge a little bit before I roll in there. Long story short -- I bought a business last year. Small business, s-corp, sole owner. They were able to depreciate about 50k on the assets of the business this year. A good amount of the profits so far are just sitting in a checking account (for math purposes, say its 50k). I was asking them about taking distributions and it sounds like thats basically a no go because original purchase price - 50k of depreciation + 50k of equity sitting in a checking account = break even. My understanding (Google) is telling me that you can't take distributions that put the business equity negative. So here is my overall question -- What is the long term deal for that 50k just chilling in the business checking account? How do I eventually get that out? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Jun 2019 01:22 PM PDT When I say changes, they go from internal with the way of work of the employees, to growing in social media like crazy, and having more variety in the content of the magazine. We have struggled with being an "old" and not updated magazine since it has been around for more than 40 years We published a letter in the magazine and social media, and also sent a letter to clients communicating the change of management and all the changes to come but didn't have any responses. The magazine focus on the printing industry. [link] [comments] |
Anyone get sued for their website not being ADA compliant? Posted: 15 Jun 2019 08:52 PM PDT Has anyone been hit with a ADA Website Compliance Lawsuit? It's supposedly a huge issue for SB's in California, NY and FL. If so, how did you deal with it? Was it resolved? How did you go about becoming compliant? For those who don't know what I'm talking about, read this. [link] [comments] |
LLC: S-Corp vs. LLC: Sole Proprietor (Disregarded Entity) Posted: 15 Jun 2019 01:03 PM PDT I fully understand the differences btwn these two but what I need advice on is what should I choose since this will be my first year of business. I haven't generated any capital and I can't predict how long it'll take me to make X amount of dollars, so should I just stay a Sole Proprietor until the next following tax year? I want to make sure I'd be generating enough money so that I could pay myself a "reasonable amount" of salary each month or is that reasonable amount based on how much is generated? Any similar stories, advice, or answers are greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 15 Jun 2019 04:24 AM PDT Hello, I am currently running a successful small scale business buying wholesale and selling retail via websites like Amazon. The products that I sell are private label and unbranded but I am looking into moving into branded products at some stage. Is it worth me opening a Shopify account (or other similar eCommerce tool) and selling via my own domain alongside my Amazon sellers page? From what I have seen, most Shopify users have their own specific brand or tailored product, where as I would be selling more of a selection of products ranging in brands/private label products. I would be making this move as an attempt to drive more sales through my own domain to avoid sellers fee. All help is appreciated. [link] [comments] |

Want to help out Auntie's retail clothing store. She is closing shop soon. Posted: 15 Jun 2019 05:00 AM PDT Hey guys, My amazing auntie runs a retail clothing store right now. She sells all kinds of clothing, accessories, makeup, etc. But it has not been doing well. Like, her lease is $3000 a month and she probably sells like...$100-200 a week on a good week. It hasn't been doing well and it breaks my heart, because she now is doing a close out sale of everything and is still isn't working out. What is the best way I can help her? I only got back to town recently but in the time that she started this business she's done facebook ads, craigslist, in person advertising stuff but her English isn't the best so it's just, it's just not working out. It is located in a good area though, there should theoretically be lots of foot traffic since it is on a busy pedestrian road with cars and traffic all the time too. It is in a corner of a strip mall ish. It's a big place. [link] [comments] |
