    Geico vs. Progressive vs. Travelers

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 02:03 PM PDT

Geico is my current auto-insurance company. However, I have received (significant) lower quotes from Progressive and Travelers for the same coverage. So I am looking to get some feedback/first hand experiences about these two companies from you to help me decide if I should switch.

Health insurance changing - expecting a baby in late November

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 04:59 PM PDT

So my husband's employers are changing, he works for a large medical practice and they'll be switching employment. His job and everything will remain the same, except his benefits will be provided by the medical school, instead of the large healthcare network. His insurance provider will also be changing.

Even though he's filling everything out now, the new insurance won't take effect until Jan 1st 2020. Our son is due Nov. 22, so I assume we will have to add him to my husband's current plan, and then also concurrently add him to the new plan. Is this correct? Has anyone been in this situation?

I would gladly add him to my plan, but my insurance is handled through my grad school program. My grad school program isn't the best at informing me if they discontinue my benefits, and I'm afraid there will be some sort of mix up that I temporarily lose my coverage when I take FMLA. I'm already enrolled in my husband's plan as well, just in case. I will resume my benefits for sure as soon as I come back from leave, so as the worst case scenario I assume we could use COBRA?

Billed for office visit instead of annual check up.

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 10:48 PM PDT

My wife went for an annual medical check up (which should be covered 100% by our insurance) . during the check up, she told the doctor that she has some chest pain and wanted the doctor to look into it. All the doctor did was feel the area and refer for an ultrasound.

Later, she was billed for office visit copay instead of being 100% covered by insurance as annual checkup.

We mailed an appeal to Premera but was denied. They said the chest check up is not covered under preventive care.

Do we have ground for a 2nd round appeal here?

My wife was not informed that she would be charged an office visit copay when she went for the annual checkup.

She might or might not sign some sign in slip that has some disclaimer on it. We don't remember what the disclaimer says.

    Thanks.

You drive into a lake. Comp or collision?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 12:52 PM PDT

We have a debate at my job and I'd like your input. You drive into a lake comp or collision.

No external factors. Just drive right into a normal old lake. No moving water just a big ol still lake.

Anyone who provides any statutes to back their answer get bonus points.

Can Progressive's Snapshot increase my rates?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 09:34 AM PDT

I live in Minnesota and have been informed by insurance companies and a few online resources that in Minnesota Law it's illegal to increase your rates off of programs like this. But I was wondering if someone who is well versed in this stuff had a second opinion. So while they may not be able to increase my current rates, can they use that data to increase my rates when it's time to renew my contract, assuming I'm a bad driver?

To preface, I consider myself to be an average to fairly good driver and considering I take the bus too and from work and have only put on 4000 miles in the 9 months I've had the car. So I hope I would do well with this test, I just want to know worst case scenario before I dive into this program!

Bonus question, how long do I need to be using snapshot? I've heard anywhere from 90 days to 6 months.

    Thanks in advance!!

    Roof totaled

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 08:54 PM PDT

Hello! We bought our house in May 2018 two weeks after a hail storm that totaled all the roofs on the south side of town. I don't know the seller knew it was totaled, or maybe he did, that doesn't really matter. In April 2019 when snow started melting, we had a ton of asphalt running off the roof and I was concerned ours was damaged. So I called a roofer. Yep, totaled. I called the old homeowner and asked if he would consider filing a claim (since he was the insured at the time of damage) and he VERY generously agreed.

Adjuster came out, yep totaled. Final claim is: $26k total damage, $16k unrecoverable depreciation, they give us $10k for the roof. They say that the depreciation is unrecoverable ONLY because we didn't file within 6 months of the "loss". But we didn't know until April 2019 that it was totaled.

I'd like to talk to a lawyer and challenge the insane depreciation by specifically challenging the 6 months from loss/6 months from discovery. Is it a losing battle and should we just take the $10k and fix what we can, or do they owe the old homeowner the recoverable depreciation also? And yes, I totally understand the old homeowner is a saint and doesn't have to do any of this for us. He has been AWESOME.

    Thank you!

    Edit: Idaho if it matters

Failed to report change of income to medi-cal...

I got a job 6 months ago and stupidly turned down the company insurance because i didnt want to lose my therapist and GP... I got my mail from my old address recently and got a packet about renewal of medi-cal next month and didnt know i had to report income change to medi-cal within ten days... my question is should I wait for my medi-cal to expire or report the income ASAP? Since I've been receiving services will I be penalized for not reporting sooner?

Can I recurrent sign up for a new progressive auto policy for lower rates?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 09:57 PM PDT

I recently moved to Las Vegas, which has very high auto insurance rates. I was working through a prior, new progressive policy with snapshot, for which I paid for 6 months in full for a discounted rate. I went through their website, qualified for a new policy with snapshot for 6 months, which I immediately took. Is there any reason why I couldn't do this indefinitely? Like when the current policy expires, search for another quote through their site and prepay for another 6 months for a low trial rate? Or is it because I moved states the only reason that I was able to qualify for this new policy with an introductory rate?

Can someone recommend to me what you think are the best private healthcare insurance providers? Plans that will cover a lot of things and won't leave you hanging when you need treatment? (In THE US)

Parents Dropping Our Policies - Qualifying Event?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 04:25 PM PDT

My husband and I are on separate policies - each on our respective parents' health insurance policies. If each of our parents were to drop our coverage (if that is even possible) would that be a special qualifying event for us to get an insurance plan through my husband's work together outside of open enrollment?

    Auto Insurance Policy Number Format?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 04:19 PM PDT

My wife and I recently were involved in an auto collision. The other driver was being very un-cooperative and denying her liability, even though she was backing out of a parking spot and hit my moving car. Her passenger came with me to my car to get pictures of the damage, while the driver wrote down her information, which included her name, address, make/model/year of her vehicle, and her "policie number", which was in xxx-xxx-xxx format, with an expiration date.

When we returned to her vehicle, I snapped a quick picture of the back of her truck which included the license plate, and then the driver had her truck started and handed me the paper with her information and they drove off. I did not even get to give them my information.

My insurance company could not find another company with that policy number format, and I have contacted the police to run a search on the driver for an active insurance policy, but I was wondering if anyone here recognizes this insurance format?

Planning to rent a car in the US: How can I buy third party liability insurance if I live in Canada and don't own a car?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 02:59 PM PDT

Like the title says, I'm in a bit of a funky situation. I'm planning to travel to California where my girlfriend and I will be going from LA to San Diego on a mini-road trip of sorts. I'm under 21 which means even though I can rent a car from the rental company (Marathon Car Rental), they can't sell me car insurance. On their website it notes that I can buy travel insurance that includes third party liability insurance (collision damage is covered by my credit card), but I don't really know where to start and a basic google search comes up with nothing. Do I have to buy it from a Canadian company or am I supposed to buy it from an American company? Also, any recommendations on finding travel insurance in general? Thanks y'all!

Question about a small accident with car and bicycle

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 02:31 PM PDT

A person on a bicycle ran into a car at the bottom of a neighbors driveway while there were some people backing out of the driveway. The car was stopped waiting for the people on bicycles to pass (they were on the road) and they drove into the car. Who needs to be contacted in this situation? Home or car insurance or something else? Car has $1000 of damages according to a local body shop.

    Home Insurance - Impact

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 02:31 PM PDT

My roof is structurally unsafe. Currently the gable walls are leaning 5 inches along with the neighbours (semi-detached house) also leaning the same amount. The local council has informed us and our neighbours that it is unsafe to live in and we have had to relocate (luckily we have a place to stay with family friends)

We called our insurance and the loss adjuster said that they couldn't pay out as they couldn't find a cause. We employed a structural engineer, who has identified the problem as a problem with next door's chimney cracking and causing the whole roof to be pushed 5 inches (about a 40degree angle from walls to top of roof).

The loss adjuster mentioned we were covered under 'impact' and the closest I can find on our policy is

    "Accidental damage to the buildings.

Accidental damage is sudden and unintentional physical damage that happens unexpectedly."

This has happened in the last 6-12 months but has only just been noticed due the extremity of the situation and winter weather taking it's toll.

Do you think with the structural engineer's report stating " The crack in the chimney in 23 Drayton road has caused the gable wall to lean in under the weight of the partly unsupported chimney breast. This action has pushed the entire roof in the same direction and the lack of the chimney to butress the gable wall in 25 Drayton Road assisted in this deflection." that we should talk to our insurance again?

    Notes:

    • We did not remove the chimney and have been living in the house for 25 years.

    • Next door bought the house in March 2017 and their survey report did not mention this crack or anything related to this.

    Thanks for any help/advice!

Switching jobs and states while pregnant

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 02:18 PM PDT

I'll try to keep this short and concise. So my wife and I are moving down to North Carolina at the beginning of August, she's pregnant with a November due date. As of right now we are on Mass health, switching to my employers plan beginning next month (my 90 days). What are my options for keeping my wife insured until my NC insurance kicks in (in November), I also would like my 1 year old covered but I can try and cover her out of pocket if necessary (not the best idea) and lastly myself. I'm least concerned about myself, and most concerned about my wife as that would be the most expensive. Thank you

Hit deductible and nothing happened. Months later no fix.

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 08:11 AM PDT

I hit my deductible for health insurance in march (it shows on my march EOB). Once I passed the deductible the co-insurance never kicked in and my account just sort of glitched out. Here in June it is still not fixed. I overpaid by hundreds before I caught it and called them. First attempt at fixing it took 1.5 months and 'they didn't have the right information' so it didn't get fixed. Coming up on a month on the second attempt to fix it.

I've collected copies of all bills and EOBs. I made a spreadsheet calculating exactly how much I overpaid. Every month this goes on, more claims are getting added and improperly processed. I'm still getting full price bills and having to pay full price for prescriptions. After the first fix attempt failed, they at least 'froze' my billing, but i'm just waiting for a call from their collections department since the 'freeze' is probably just some note buried in my account file.

Anyone know what my options are?

    Root Insurance - Driving Test

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 01:33 PM PDT

I have been under Root driving test for about a week now, and currently at 8/10. However, my score is deteriorating everyday on brake and consistency. I go to work/go back home on very busy highway (usually a 50-minute travel on rush hours vs. 20 minutes on normal hour). So it's hard to keep my speed consistent, even more difficult not to brake.

Is there any advice on this? How far away should I start braking? At what speed should I maintain?

    Thanks in advance,

Considering 2 quotes - reputation vs cost

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 01:15 PM PDT

I live in South Florida and my homeowners/hazard insurance has gone through the roof - $3300 a year.

I've gotten some new quotes and have narrowed it down to 2:
$1500 from Avatar, which has positive financial ratings but horrible customer reviews - lots of BBB complaints and worst of all, reports that customers are being dropped for submitting claims.

$2700 from State Farm for almost the same coverage. We've had an auto policy from them for 10+ years and have been happy with it. State Farm was around when Hurricane Andrew devastated the area in 1994, and I'm confident in their ability to cover me should I need a new roof when the next storm hits.

We're very far inland, my house was built in the past 20 years and conforms to the high wind velocity zone building codes, so save a fire I don't expect a storm to level the place. Assuming the price difference between them stays the same, over 10 years the savings from one to the other would almost be enough to buy a new roof.

Can anyone offer some advice or insight? I'd like to save $1200 but I also want actual coverage :-/

Question about being on parent's auto insurance

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 08:05 AM PDT

I'm currently on my parent's auto insurance, and I just recently bought a car. I'm splitting up with my parents due to reasons. I'm financing a car through my bank, however they required me to submit my current auto insurance, even though I'm getting my own after getting the car. So on the application with them, it has my parent's auto insurance policy.

Also when at the dealer, they asked me for my current auto insurance (which is my parent's), and I had to give that to them.

My question is if my parents can find out if I got a car. I already registered my new address, etc. with the bank / DMV but the auto insurance is the only thing that shows their information. I don't want my new car to be on my parent's auto insurance.

Expected premium hike after comprehensive claim filed?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 11:30 AM PDT

I have a financed 2016 WRX insured in FL with full coverage ~850/ 6 months. Currently have comprehensive insurance with only a $100 deductable and collision at $250. I'm 26 with no tickets or accidents on my record.

I was driving one day and a car in oncoming traffic ran over some rocks and they drilled the side of the car. (Looks like someone hit a couple golf balls into the car door) I've been quoted ~600+ to have it filled and that half of the car resprayed. I also have Tons of deep rock chips on the front bumper so I debate having that painted at the same time, it would get touched when they fade the car. Not sure if that would be able to slide into the same claim..

From an agents point of view what would I expect in rate hikes if I were to file a claim? Is it worth paying out of pocket?

Why do I need liability insurance for each vehicle I own?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2019 10:39 AM PDT

I'm a single person and I have multiple vehicles. I don't typically purchase insurance beyond liability. I thought to myself the other day, why is it that the policy is bound to my vehicles rather than myself? The fact that I drive three different vehicles means I'm paying for three different policies to basically cover damages in the event I'm at fault during an accident.

The fact that I have 3 vehicles does not mean I drive 3x as much, so why must I pay 3x as much (minus discounts due to policies being bundled). Why is the Insurance industry set up this way? Wouldn't it make more sense for liability coverage to be purchased for my person and regardless of what vehicle I'm operating that liability coverage is applicable?
