Business owners struggling with Panic attacks and Anxiety attacks

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:24 PM PDT

FEAR OF FAILURE stalks our world as business owners, from losing key clients to running out of money. For us, courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to persist in spite of it.
Sometimes, the fear becomes so large that it starts reducing quality of life. Thats what happened to me years ago.

My pursuit of success led to a panic attack disorder and anxiety disorder. It took a lot of work to get out and recover fully.

Who else has pushed themselves so far that it is affecting their mental health?

Love to hear your struggles or insight!

When does a business owner know to hire staff?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 05:53 AM PDT

I own a small business. I'm a software developer and I build applications for clients. As a sole-wolf, I literally handle all aspects of the business.

I really don't know where to get started on turning this into a formal business. I imagine I'd need to organize sales materials and a sales process, then hire a salesperson first. As more sales come in...then hire another developer, then another salesperson, rinse, repeat.

If I hire a developer first, there won't be enough work yet. Basically, if I hire for any other position there won't be enough work because we need sales first.

I'm super nervous at the prospect of hiring someone, because they might suck. So I guess the question is...how do I handle this properly?

Client only wants to pay part -- what to do?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 10:02 PM PDT

I made a new account for anonymity's sake, client I'm referencing knows my Reddit info. For the sake of this, I'm changing small details, but the story is the same. I'll leave a TLDR at the bottom. Any insight is appreciated.

I began a videography/photo/music composition business a couple months ago. Slow, but steady growth with a few clients a month. I have had to learn a lot quickly, and things are going well, but I haven't had to deal with this yet. Full disclosure, I didn't necessarily think this client had bad intentions at first, but it's looking worse and worse.

Here's the story & question, as brief as I can be.

Got hired by a client looking for a *videographer*. Said she had little start up cash. Orig offer was $100 for a video campaign. Told her this was too low and that for the level of work she wanted, it would take at least $600 at minimum. She pulled up to 250$ on paper and started with a 100$ deposit. We sign off on time + place as well. I usually bring a lighting and tech assistant for these things who also shoots photos throughout the day. I'll throw in a few photos for content. It's not supposed to be a legendary photoshoot, just some extra content. I later find out client does not understand this. Client pressures my assistant throughout day to get photos, sets up angles with 4+ models, multiple scenes, etc. It got pretty out of hand. Shoot goes wayyyy longer than written. The next day I call client and tell her that we spent an enormous amount of time and politely tell her to pay more. She agrees to $100 more. Upon submission, client is impressed by videos which include my footage as well as original music. I send a few photos here and there so she has something for socials while she's waiting. She posts said photos. I then send her the rest of the photoset, which again, is not meant to be a full blown photoshoot & contract does not state that it's supposed to be. Client texts claiming that the photos are not up to snuff, don't look good, not edited properly, that kind of thing. Says she will not be paying the extra $100.

I don't want to argue over $100, but it will go toward that random stuff like memory cards and batteries. She says she doesn't want to pay $100 for the photos she's using. Upon discussion, seems like she doesn't realize how much time and energy went into this, So in my invoice, I want to include hours, services provided, and then my usual rates, followed by the discount I gave her.

How can I get this person to understand the amount of time I put into this and that it's shitty of her to try to dangle $100 over my head like this? Is there anything I can put in the invoice that "backs up" the $100 additional even though we did not sign off on it as it was a verbal agreement?

TLDR: New client doesn't want to pay full amount made in verbal agreement for videography gig.

Looking to start a business in office admin services

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 06:39 PM PDT

I wanted to use this forum for polling on anyone who began helping small business by handling services for office admin, automation for billing, expense tracking, inventory management, overall cash flow management, analytics for productivity, pretty much everything that deals with inner office working. I know there are a ton of small businesses that have not innovated into doing things easier, still using several systems to manage their business that either aren't integrated or don't know how to integrate them, I'm just trying to understand potential profitability before I sink a bunch of time building out business models to offer.

A few years ago, I beefed up a small business office work, turning their 3 day billing process into 1-2 hours max for a small fee, among other clunky processes. I'd like to be able to do the same for any small business. I know there are tons of software that walk business through these processes, but not sure they know the most efficient ways to use them to their advantage. Anyone else made a living doing this in their area? Any suggestions on services that are highly sought after that business owners hate doing that they would love to get easier with either automation or process enhancement? I have payroll operations knowledge, end to end, as well as proficient SQL, data blending software knowledge and basic python, java script, and XML programming knowledge.

    Random SMB questions

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 06:29 PM PDT

So, not sure if this is the right place, but I'll try and provide as much info as I can. I work a standard 9-5 day job in TN as a software developer and have been trying to build myself up doing 1099 work as a side-hustle. I've been operating my side hustle since 2017 and I have two clients, working on a third. I decided that I should consider starting up a business and put my focus into that. Building that as a brand sounded better to me than trying to just sell myself as a 1099. My thought was that I could potentially fold my current clients into my "business". So far all I've done is buy a domain and leveraged Office 365 to manage my email.

Unfortunately, I have so many questions, I don't know where or who to even ask. So I took to Reddit. Here are some of the things I do not know.

    1. Do I need a business license if I'm just selling software development services under a Sole Proprietorship? (Basically consulting for companies or other consultancies)
    2. Should I file for a FEIN with the IRS for my business?
    3. Are there any low hanging fruit I could use to get extra clients easier over sending out cold emails hoping for responses? Obviously I'm going to work on building up a website when I have time and get SEO started.
    4. I've spoken with Recruiters, but I feel they don't want the hassle of working with 1099 people and would prefer C2C / B2B style work instead.

    Thanks

    Cost of employing someone

What's a fair rate to pay someone for manning a trade show booth?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 10:05 AM PDT

I've been manning my booths for the last year, but want to shift that responsibility to someone who I have in mind. What would be a fair pay rate for a single event? It would be three days over the weekend about 8 hours each day.

They would have to drive 400 miles from our home office to the event site - so I'd pay about $200 for that and pay for the hotel. How much additional is a fair rate for manning my table for 3 days?

Any suggestions for large recurring transactions?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 04:49 PM PDT

I'm looking to add an IT managed services offering to my catalog and need a way to bill clients regularly. I'm thinking about adding credit cards (I don't take cards now, just send invoices every month), and setting up recurring payments for the clients. Cost will vary depending on the service, but somewhere between $2k-$8k/mo

    My questions are:

    1) Is there a different approach that I should be thinking about? I was thinking credit cards simply because I can just set the recurring payment and not spend a lot of time on it. I'm sending invoices every month not only am I waiting 30 days for payment but every month someone at the client

    2) Any issues with a recurring payment of that amount?

    3) I'm a bit worried about the fees. Anyone have a way to reduce how much the processing costs? I won't be swiping any of the cards, so I imagine it'll be a fairly steep rate.

Any advice from someone who has managed service offerings would be greatly appreciated.

Favorite "start up" stories in TV and Movies?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:56 PM PDT

Do any of you have favorite business movies or TV shows?

Example: A Most Violent Year (2014) is a criminally underrated movie about an honest businessman.

And the comedy Silicon Valley on HBO is a quality show about a tech startup.

    Any other suggestions?

When do you file papers fornllc ornoartership when buying a business?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 04:41 PM PDT

Edit: sorry for the title gore.

In the course of buying a business when is the appropriate time to form the llc. Im fronting money for a family member. But im not a party to the business itself.

This would be a partnership of 3 people, i think an llc sounds appropriate. I would want all debts and profits to be equally responsible. Ive read up on some on the process.

I believe it will be an asset purchase, that is to say the prospective buyers havent gone so far as to discuss buying the sellers llc but all the stock and fixtures as well as employee salary will be transferred. Im aware of the risk about buying an llc that has debts against it. I need to determine if the lease will be sublet or resigned.

I think the llc should be formed prior to completing the sale with the seller. I advocate for seeing a lawyer or cpa(which is more appropriate in this situation?) but the push back is the amount if money spent in talking with that person...i guess theyve been given a 10 minute rate so they are wary...like 100$ per 10 minutes consult to discuss this stuff(it sounds ridiculous).

Im a salary worker so not fluent in the entrepeur world am i logical to insist that my loan require a prerequisite that an llc be formed? While ot wont be my name on anything im trying to avoid be asked to front more money if a partner ducks out. I can accept the risk of the loan amount i provide but cannot accept being on the hook for the rest.

Should the llc, partership etc be created during the sale? Prior to the sale? I feel strongly that no papers be signed until that has happened, dunno if im in the right as far as whats necessary to meet the intent of an llc. Certainly no money paid or pooled until a notarized document delineates the rules of the business, like one partner needing to sell, or one partner not . The whole point if an llc is to isoalte your finances and waiting too long seems like a big gray area.

    1. Ill seek a lawyer on my own if necessary but what should i ask for to be drafted to ensure that each partner is responsible/benefits equally? Ive read i may need an additional agreement in the case of lease guarantees. The state is PA.

    Thanks.

Starting a business with brother and wife. Split it down the middle or into 3rds?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 01:44 PM PDT

Looking into starting a retail business with my brother and wife but not sure how to fairly split it up.

I would work on the business full time while they kept their day jobs and helped when they could. Assuming they would each help an equal amount of time, with the goal that one day they would both quit their day jobs and work full time on the business.

Still in the beginning stages but looks like all the money needed for start up would come from an investor, so little to no money out of our pocket.

Would we split it in half, since my wife and I are under one house hold or would we split it into 1/3rds?

    Small business bank loan query

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:42 PM PDT

I've been with my bank for about 17 years now, I've never taken out a loan before, its only been chequing/savings dealings. My credit is trash, I declared bankruptcy back in 2011.

Basically, I want to get into vending machine business. If I can bring in a dozen signatures from local business owners who will agree to let me place a vending machine on their premises, what else will the bank expect from me? I only have about $1500 in savings at the minent. I'd only need a loan of about $15,000-$17000 to get off the ground. Hard to predict how soon I could pay it back, but likely within two-three years if everything went just okay.

Is this a huge risk on the banks part? I have no collateral or assets to put up, just my savings. I've been a blue collar working man since high school and some recent back/shoulder injuries are really taking a toll on me.

Additionally, do you think 25% is a fair cut for the small business owners? I'd be fine to increase that % over time, after I have the bank paid back, assuming it was actually bringing in decent money. Once squared with the bank I'd try to expand into more local businesses, if I was lucky enough to get that far I wouldn't mind at all going 50/50. The business owners may want 50% from the get-go, and thats fine by me if the bank wouldnt mind me taking a bit longer to pay them off.

For clarity, I would only vend snacks/candy that I could purchase from costco.

Any ideas or suggestions going forward would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

    Question Regarding Entity Classification Election

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:28 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I've recently created a sole proprietorship LLC in preparation for my very first small business venture. Pretty excited since I'm going to work for myself for the first time ever - NO MORE SOUL SUCKING CORPORATE OVERLORDS! However, with that, I'm scared as hell and trying to navigate the paperwork and avalanche of sales calls and mailers can be a bit overwhelming.

That being said, I formed my LLC through LegalZoom, did not purchase any additional services, just the filing. Now, I'm getting calls from one of LegalZoom's partner companies called 1800Accounting. They keep pushing this ECE filing and offering to do it for me, for a cost obviously. From what I've read so far, it's important to make sure that my LLC is classified properly so that I can avoid needlessly high taxes down the road but I thought I had already done that during the initial filing? Doesn't creating a sole proprietorship LLC basically answer that question for the IRS?

From your personal experience, is the ECE something I need to worry about? Since my LLC was formed in April, apparently I need to file it in July, otherwise, I may get stuck in a higher tax bracket (so says the sales guy). Thank you in advance for the feedback and advice!

    Facebook Shop vs. Shopify

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 11:56 AM PDT

Hello! I am a brand new business owner (online woman's apparel boutique). I opened up a Facebook Shop because it was free and my goal is to make a couple of sales on there before getting a shopify account. BUT, I am wondering if I should just open an Shopify store now. I can't track my visitors on FB Shop (that I know) so don't know how I'm doing.

The way I see it, the Facebook Shop seems like too many steps to access the shop. You have to have a facebook account and it doesn't seem as "legit" as other online boutiques. I also can't get the offers to work and they are very limited.

What are your thoughts? As someone with not much business experience, I would appreciate any advice or feedback you may have! I want to learn and can't wait for the day I make sales!!

My facebook shop website is https://www.facebook.com/westcanadaco

Instagram is @westcanadaco if anyone wants to check it out!

Thank you for your time :)
