Advice on steps needed to starting my own business!

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 02:38 PM PDT

Hello all! I realize this is a very open ended question but I would appreciate any help on the steps I need to take in establishing my business professionally and legally.

I just finished and got my logo made for cards, was about to start printing them off to hand out when I realized it's definitely not that simple. This is entirely new territory for me so I'm a little unsure where to start or even any websites that could help guide me in the right direction.

My business is for Beauty and Special Effects makeup, I would be the owner and only employee. I already have insurance under my name since I've worked in the field before under another person. I was told I need to register my company name under the state, but not even sure how to go about doing that.

    In Maryland.

Life-changing work behavior I learned that made working customer service much easier for me

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 03:45 AM PDT

(still a reddit newbie, sorry for any formatting issues. Also, it's still pretty early where I'm at, so sorry for any abysmal mistakes in writing/general incoherence)

    TL;DR at bottom

For context, I've worked customer service for 2 years now. I am the public face of a very large department, and I get all questions/complaints/attitude that may not even be remotely connected to my job. So a lot of my decisions on the job are in the gray area, where I don't really have an exact answer and must make a judgement call. For a long time, I constantly second-guessed myself, and had no confidence to speak of.

Until, one day, it finally hit me, and it's honestly changed my life at this job.

My job is not to give the customer what they want, but to provide the customer with what we offer. This may seem like an obvious statement, but once I realized it, decisions became much easier to make. Suddenly, I could give a customer an answer that might upset them without second-guessing myself and worrying about getting in trouble, because, hey, that's outside of what we provide, so I'm gonna say no!

TL;DR: Your job as a customer service rep is not to give the customer what they want, but to provide them with what you offer.

Also, I feel like this could be articulated in a much better way, but it's early, so... sorry!

I own a small business and all 5 of my employees are clocking in for each other and taking days off one at a time when I'm not in the office. What can I do?

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 09:23 AM PDT

Hello, I own multiple businesses so unfortunately I'm not able to monitor everything that goes on at every location. It was brought to my attention that all the employees at one location are clocking in for each other and taking days off when I'm not there. I believe this has been going on for awhile and unfortunately I've been too trusting. Do I bring this to the police? I have evidence.

Need advise on starting rental business!

    Posted: 18 Jun 2019 05:00 PM PDT

    ADVICE** Whoops!

I'm 24F and super fortunate right now averaging $60,000 a year, this gives me the opportunity to put a pretty penny in my savings. I just paid my car off as well so I'll get to add a extra $400 a month in there as well. I thought this would be a good time to invest in a house or condo to rent out to air bnb so I could have extra income stacking up as well as paying itself off.. has anyone done anything like this? I've done a lot of research on rentals but would love to hear some extra tips/advice!
