    PwC 2019 Compensation Thread

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 07:40 AM PDT

Career outlook discussions begin today! I think this worked well on here last year since GoingConcern is a dump now. Is it possible to sticky this over the next week or two while people have their meetings?

    Same rules as before:

    1. Market/Office
    2. Line of service
    3. CY level - FY19 Level (A1>A2, S1->S2, S3->M1, etc)
    4. Rating
    5. Old & new salary
    6. Bonus

I'm a Big 4 Manager; I recently received all interview questions/guidelines/criteria. I am now providing them to you.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 09:03 AM PDT

So I am not going to provide any proof here. I am rewording everything and summarizing every question so you get a good idea of what we're asking for. I am not going to expose myself to help you guys. Many of you won't be surprised, but here it is:

Pre-Interview (when you speak to lower level staff before interviews)

Your interview absolutely begins the moment you walk into the room/office. Each staff is provided with a notes sheet and a predetermined list of interviewees to rate.

Interviewees are rated with the following:

    • Capability to uphold and maintain a conversation
    • Knowledge of the company/role you are applying to
    • Personality and demeanor - was the interviewee positive? Fearful? Arrogant? Etc.
    • List any major red flags that were noticed.

Interviewees will be asked a few questions, but none of the answers are judged or rated. Staff members can ask any question they'd like in any order. The staff member role is to ensure the interviewee feels comfortable and loosened prior to the interview, and to provide a slight judgment to help with difficult decisions.

Staff Member judgments have approximately 0 to 20% impact of the final decision. This depends entirely on the actual interviewer (manager to partner levels).

    Interview Questions

    Technical Capabilities

    • Depends on the position
    • Interviewers may ask questions that are harder and more difficult than the expected level of expertise required for interviewees.
    • Trying to bullshit an answer is an easy way to get a failure rating in this section. If you do not know, just say I do not know, but explain that you are more than willing to learn. Adding in a story about how you learned something quickly and applied it in a high-stakes setting is very beneficial.

    • "Tell me about a situation where you had to use authoritative literature to solve a real accounting problem"

    • "Tell me how you applied your knowledge in a real-life working and/or project scenario."

    Industrial Knowledge

    • I'm not including anything here because the questions are too specific... but just know that your industrial / market / sales skills do matter depending on your job function.

    Communications

    • "Tell me about a time where your listening skills helped you excel."
    • "Tell me when you made an effort to go above and beyond in understanding the needs of another (in a business situation)"
    • "Tell me about a time where you have to give devastating and/or bad news to someone"
    • "Tell me about a time where you had to enforce a scheduling change due to overwork/difficulties keeping with the schedule"
    • "Tell me about a time when you worked with a team and/or a group to establish scope, expectations, etc. for a project."
    • "Tell me about a time where you worked with significant time constraints and exceeded client expectations."
    • "Tell me about a time where you worked with difficult and/or non-responsive team members."

    • In this section, there are no wrong answers, but it's about the attitude you have.

    • Big 4 managers do not look for success here... they look for lessons learned. Your goal should not be "I did everything perfectly and I am amazing." It should be "I faced a difficult situation, and maybe I did something wrong, but I learned from it."

    Managerial Skills

    • If you are a new hire (college grad), your questions will be more focused on managing up. Meaning helping managers with their job, and responding properly to managers.
    • If you are an experienced hire, you will be asked both managing up and managing down.

    • "Tell me about a time where you actively sought out advice from others to help you make a decision."

    • "Tell me about a time where you used another person's perspective or ideas to create a better final product."

    • "Tell me about a time where you were able to express your needs and ideas to a team and it led to success."

    • "Tell me about a time where you had to provide negative feedback to a team member."

    • "Tell me about your time management skills and capability to handle multiple projects and tasks at once."

    • "Tell me about a time where you improved team morale."

    Self

    • The remaining questions are just self-based questions that are standard to most other interviews.
    • Things like greatest weakness/strength, dealing with failure, working with others, organization skills, etc.
    • This part literally has no guidelines on the interview sheet. Interviewers would just make up whatever they want, if they want.

Keep in mind that these are all just options that interviewers can use. They are required to ask at least one question from each area, but they are allowed to add in new questions or new areas if they choose. Also keep in mind that partner-level people might not use any of this and do their own thing.

    Post-Interview Evaluations

Candidates are given a rating of 1-5 in each of the interview sections above. There is also a "personality" area that focuses similar to the pre-interview area.

There is a section for "Hire" where a candidate can bypass the "pool." As in, if a candidate does so well that everyone is confident, they'll get an offer basically that day or the day after.

Otherwise, they'll be analyzed together, and a big discussion is held to determine which candidates work best.

YMMV for number of hires though.

Let me know if you guys have any questions, but keep in mind that I will be quite vague to avoid attributing this material to any company. Everything I'm giving you is pretty consistent throughout the B4 (I worked for 3/4 of them).

Audit partner when a staff member leaves at 5.30pm during busy season

    I made the shitty coffee.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 11:12 AM PDT

    Confession.

My desk is in ear shot of the break room. On a quiet day, I can hear every conversation that happens in there. Today, the coffee was kicked, and I couldn't just leave the thing empty. So, I did the adult thing and made a new batch.

I've never made coffee here before.

I add in the amount of grounds I felt necessary, then layered it with a different flavor I thought would taste really good mixed. Click brew... I grinned at my accomplishment and walked to my desk head up and chest out, confident in my future cup of jo.

A couple minutes later I hear Rick and Garret walk into the break room, and I hear them pour a cup. Excited to hear their reaction, Rick explains loudly, "Yuck! Who the fuck made this shit coffee?"

    My heart dropped.

Garret tries. "This is absolutely disgusting. Who did this shit?"

They actually went into my section where roughly 8 of us sit, and asked who made the coffee.

Of course, I had no idea how made that shit coffee. Some loser I guess.

My senior just told us she leaving, but the partner didn't even acknowledge her in the room

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 07:31 PM PDT

Is this normal? My senior kind of went above and beyond for this engagement and left when we were wrapping up. I'm shocked at the partner behavior considering the late nights we spent doing this engagement.

    Working at B4 be like

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 10:12 AM PDT

So I probably shouldn't even waste time applying to KPMG if I'm two years out of school working as an accounting clerk for a car dealership and had terrible grades in college, right?

My ‘17 & ‘18 taxes aren’t showing as filed. My accountant keeps blowing me off when brought to his attention.

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 03:17 PM PDT

Still haven't received a return. Filed in March. Show my CT state taxes were never filed in 2017 or 2018. Looked on IRS website and show my 2018 taxes weren't filed. I owed $66 in state taxes last year I'm certain that I paid them. My accountant is a local and established business in operation for years and was paid for services both years. I keep calling and keep getting told "I'll look into it and get back to you." But never hear back. What are my options here. Should I refile through someone else? This is very strange, I don't get it, just file it, right? I'm concerned this could lead to an audit, I bought a house last year. I don't want any problems. Should I go down to the business in person and cause a stink, that isn't my personality.

EY UpNext / Recent Transfer Email

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 05:17 PM PDT

Has anyone looked into or entered into the EY UpNext temporary or permanent transfer from the email blast within the past month or so?

Basically the firm is offering at least people in my region for a temporary or permanent transfer to places like Bay Area, LA, Seattle, Bentonville, SLC, etc and was curious what exactly constitutes a "temporary transfer" as depending on how long the transfer lasts I'd definitely be interested.

Appreciate anything anyone has heard. Thanks

    Writing Off Travel Expenses

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 08:18 PM PDT

    Hello,

I have a digital marketing firm and some of our revenue comes from websites we own that generate ad revenue. I'm thinking about starting a travel blog/vlog and making Youtube videos and posting pics to Instagram. What exactly could I write off in regards to this? Plane Tickets, Hotels, Food, etc.? I know there are new rules about not being able to write off any food expense so are there any exceptions or would I have to always pay for the food out of my post taxed regular income?

Any advice on how to set this up/structure it to make sure I'm doing everything the right way and complying with all rules?

    Simple or compound interest?

    Posted: 17 Jun 2019 03:33 PM PDT

The text is: "... plus interest at the rate of 7 percent (7.0%) per annum on the outstanding principal balance, upon and subject to the terms and conditions herein provided."

Is this interest simple or compound? Does the "outstanding principle balance" part makes it simple?
