Posted: 13 Jun 2019 03:39 PM PDT Hi everyone I had a question about leaving a job after a month. I started working for a company exactly one month ago and quickly realized this was not the job they had sold me on as I literally just approve and deny documents I decided to give me two weeks notice today so I can look for a different job. But when I gave my two weeks notice, the manager was saying that this was going to be a really bad thing for my career and would want me to think about this decision overnight before he sends the email to HR. I wanted to know if what he said about leaving after one month was really was gonna haunt me or if it was just a scare tactic. I was not planning on putting this on my resume at all. Anyone else frustrated with Becker? Posted: 13 Jun 2019 04:23 PM PDT I have been told by Becker for the past few months they would release and ship the new textbooks for FAR, REG, and AUD on June 10th and now there's been little to no info about when we're getting our books. I have FAR in a month and want to get started but they just keep saying the books will be shipped soon. Anyone else dealing with this/know how to handle it?? [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Jun 2019 11:35 AM PDT I finished my MST last year and am now working in the corporate tax department of a tech company. I noticed that all of the younger people (about 4 of them) on my team never got their CPA and do not plan to sit for it either. That got me wondering if I should spend the time and money to get my CPA. Also, when I was looking for a job last year, I noticed that most of the industry job postings require the candidate to have a CPA or MST. So, what do you think? Is having a CPA necessary for someone who plans to stay in the industry in tax? Thanks. [link] [comments]

Thinking of exit opps before my first day as an intern Posted: 13 Jun 2019 06:53 PM PDT I start my assurance internship with one of the B4 this coming week. I have chosen the "hybrid" option so I'll spend half the internship on general clients, and the other half on financial services clients. Assuming I get the choice, which client base should I chose for my full time offer? I think FSO will be very interesting, but want to have the best chance at a great gig when I exit out after some years. What are some common exit opps for financial service auditors, vs auditors of everyone else? Will I be shutting the door on some future opportunities either way? Thanks in advance for any clarity [link] [comments]

Has anyone transitioned from public accounting to University or government accounting? Posted: 13 Jun 2019 11:04 AM PDT Currently a senior at a mid tier firm. Honestly my experience at my firm has been pretty good but I feel that if I stay any longer I will be out pricing myself if I try to move into industry so thinking of making the switch now. I'm toying with the idea of shooting for a position at my local public University. I did some non-profit work before becoming an accountant. I have zero University accounting experience but the pension benefits are insane. I did a conservative calculation and the benefit adds about $45k a year to the salary compared to SSI/401k match. FWIW I looked at the Calpers pepra plans. There are other benefits too -- the university is walking distance to my house and has a super great super cheap preschool that my kids could attend. Since I don't have the university accounting experience I'd need to take a bit of a step down. I reviewed some ads and I think I'd have a shot at a senior accountant level position there, which pays $15k less than what I make now with bonus. If I transitioned to industry instead I think I could make about $10-$15k more than I'm making now. Has anyone done this? What was it like? Do universities like taking on CPAs with public accounting experience? How is the flexibility in terms of working from home or working on your terms? One drawback of the pension system is it seems to really incentivize you to stay until you're at least 55, has that been an issue for you? Anything else I should consider? TIA. Edited to add: are there any opportunities to switch from FT to PT? [link] [comments]
Career advice needed - company won’t offer me the promotion it promised. Posted: 13 Jun 2019 09:33 AM PDT Alright, so a little background on me (25M). I have a bachelor's degree in accounting and have three years of work experience in the field. I was hired two and a half years ago by my current employer as a controller trainee. I started out as a staff accountant and was promoted to assistant controller one year ago. Flash forward to today. Over the last two and a half years, I have moved four times for this company and have gone above and beyond the normal 40 hour, watch the clock mentality, but they keep dragging their feet on officially promoting me to controller. The previous controller was fired over seven months ago, and I have assumed all of the responsibilities since then. Sure, I had some learning to do, but at this point I am 100% in charge of the position. I expressed my discontent with the situation over a month ago and was given arbitrary reasons as to why I was not officially offered the job. To me, it all seems like BS. We are a fairly small company without a lot of bureaucracy. Anyway, I am not 100% happy in the role and am contemplating pursuing other options. Maybe making a jump to finance, etc. Any opinions on how best to handle this situation? I don't feel I've been treated fairly, expressed my opinion, but was shut down. TL;DR: I was brought on as a controller trainee and now that the perfect opportunity for me to get the promotion has happened, my company is dragging their feet on actually doing it. Got my first rejection letter. Posted: 13 Jun 2019 02:46 PM PDT I'm going to be a junior in the fall and have not yet had an internship (is this normal?). Went to a SLP and just found out they are not offering me an internship. It is a regional, fairly big firm. I'm hoping to go into big4, does anyone have any advice on how to lock down an internship with one of them? I'm looking for next summer, which means recruitment begins this fall, right? Posted: 13 Jun 2019 10:01 PM PDT Ok, so I applied to two different roles (same title, but different roles/responsibilities/functions). They are two different companies but they fall under the same parent company, so they are basically sister companies. As a result, one person (he is the controller) will be interviewing me for both jobs. I have a phone interview with him tomorrow and then I have a video interview with him in Tuesday. My question would be, how do I go about it especially if he asks me why I applied for this position? And if he doesn't realize it tomorrow, should I bring it up or mention it to him?
