Review notes I wish I had written

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 09:32 AM PDT

    1. Please unfuck this mess. See me with any questions.
    2. I saw a man carrying 2 paper sacks of groceries fall down a flight of stairs. He looked better organized than these workpapers.
    3. If you ever get one of those matchbooks with an ad for a tractor trailer driving school, hang onto it. Even if there are no more matches.

    Add your own below.

Does anyone else have a Pavlovian response to senior managers?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 09:58 AM PDT

Today I realized I instinctively get hungry in the presence of senior managers because I'm so used to them taking us out for lunch.

Automated half of my work and now I dont know what to do

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 05:16 AM PDT

I took on a new job. My predecessor did not use excel formulas and hardkeyed everything and did a lot of stuff in paper.

I put excel formulas and links in everything i could and now items that used to take an hour take 5 minutes for me to do. I think its great but i dont think anyone has noticed.

I dont know what to do with myself now. I have like 20 hours of work this week. I wish i could study at work but i dont think its allowed. This is in industry.

What am i supposed to do now?

How to quit public accounting tips?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 08:47 PM PDT

Any tips in general on how to quit a job in public accounting? Things to be aware of? Things to do before quitting? Things you wish you knew before quitting? Best time to quit? Worst time to quit? Things you may have to reimburse employer for (CPA exam fees)? What to read in the employee manual prior to quitting? How to ensure employee won't trash talk you when your future jobs calls to verify employment? Greatly appreciated thanks!!

    Big 4 Montréal

What level of French do you need for Big 4 in Montréal? Looking at jobs involving US tax and I do speak French, but certainly not fluent.

I haaaate being a tax preparer.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 07:19 PM PDT

Been doing this for 5 years. I am a manager. Doing high net worth tax in Los Angeles at a Big 4. I fucking hate being a tax preparer. So fucking boring. No decision you make makes a difference. Every year, same bullshit. Ask for items, input items, review items. Repeat. You have to be a special kind of fucking bore to be able to do this for 10+ years. Close to 0 excitement. What the fuck do I do now? I need out. Make a move to financial planning?

IRS Pathways: Is it worth it?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 08:27 PM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I was selected for a position in the pathways program for the IRS. The pay seems extremely low compared to some of the private offers I've received (almost 20,000 less!) but from what I've read on this forum, I would probably like an IRS position better than big4 or similar. I was offered a position at GS-05.

For background, I'll be graduating early next month with a 3.97 GPA.

Anybody have any advice on this ? Is it worth it?

Old timer here, but looking to exit firm

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 08:18 PM PDT

Hey guys, what would you do in my current situation?

    • 10 years in public, 8 years at big 4 (tax)
    • Currently at regional firm, a couple of years away from making partner
    • 150k base
    • Old partner who left current firm wants me to work for them at start-up firm. No employees except me and him. He left since this shop isn't as friendly family as he'd like.
    • Pay cut 120k base but equity/revenue share offered on work I bring in.
    • No kids but my wife thinks I work too much at existing firm to seriously consider having kids atm. I'm in my early 30s.
    • Don't care about doing grunt work. Looking to own my destiny, use the experience to build a business and hopefully long term will result in a good financial return and having stability for my family.

Would you take the risk for a better work life balance but lower base and potential to make more?

Is it worth working your tail off to come back from a PIP or is it better to channel your efforts towards finding a different role?

    Positive story time??

    Posted: 27 Jun 2019 03:22 AM PDT

Trying to offset some of the horror stories in this sub. I'm personally a B4 experienced senior who's had a challenging but "somewhat" manageable and sometimes rewarding experience so far. From a personal and professional development standpoint, I now have a lot of personal confidence to take on tasks that appear difficult and I've gotten to work with some great teams of people who I'll be close with for a long time.

Does anyone want to chime in with some stories about how public has been good to them? Or how they landed a nice exit opportunity? Not at all trying to ignore the horrors of public, but every once in a while I think it's important to shed light on the positive sides, especially for the collegiate lurkers in the sub.
