How many hours do you work in tax at the Big 4? or non-big 4

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 03:18 PM PDT

Wondering how many hours on average do tax associates or up work during busy season and non-busy season at the big 4.

If you could state specifics, like position, busy season, firm size, I'd love it.

I'm just curious because I think I work a decent amount for being at a non big 4. Then again, I think it's because we have so much business.

    Worst. Friday. Ever.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 09:58 AM PDT

It's coming up on a long weekend here in the Great White North.

Monday is Canada Day, a holiday when we celebrate the founding of our great nation by congregating around our legislative buildings all day, getting baked and drunk AF and then trying to puke away the day drunk so we don't pass out and miss the evening fireworks.. again.

I swear it was heat stroke. Sorry about your blouse, Grandma.

It's going to be sunny and nice all weekend so why am I so upset?

This means 3 days in a row that the office will be closed.

    • No insane client emails to test my patience and knowledge,
    • no shopping bags full of client receipts to organize and journal,
    • no "it's awful but we compensate by brewing it too strong" office coffee..

and to top it off, my Capstone 1 group and I are almost ready for our presentation next weekend.

    This is awful.

Every minute I'm not working is another minute I'm not getting better.

You're either ripening or your rotting, boys and girls, and 3 days is excessive.

What do I do? How do I get through this? Someone send me some work.

In u/Sneezis' name, help me get through this difficult time.

So why are you still in Accounting if you hate it?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 11:15 AM PDT

I browse this board occasionally and I am baffled by the amount of people here who are depressed / want to kill themselves. I know the latter is said mostly in jest but seems most of you absolutely hate your work.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't have this grandiose idea that you've to work your 'passion' to make a living. Just having a career where you are competent and don't want to thrust your head through a wall should suffice but it seems most of you would prefer to get into a car accident on the way to work to have a day off. This is not a way to live lol.

So I ask, why are you working in a job you hate? Can't just be bills right? Is the plan to move on to greener pastures? Is it simply golden handcuffs (as in nice compensation & hard to walk away from)?

Where should a recent graduate in Accounting look for jobs?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 09:58 PM PDT

I recently graduated with my bachelor's degree in Accounting. I'm currently look for an entry level accounting job. I'm not interested in going into public accounting and just trying to get my foot in the door with a corporate company. I've also considered looking for a government jobs. I also don't have any real world accounting experience. So far I have been using Glassdoor, LinkedIn, and Indeed to look for jobs. Any other sites/resources that I can use to find an entry level accounting job? Thanks!

How did you know that you wanted to pursue a career in Accounting (or get a CPA?)

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 05:24 PM PDT

Really questioning whether or not I'd like to pursue an accounting career, but I just don't know if it's right for me. My background is in mathematics (BMath) and business (BBA) but I decided to take the Accounting route which I felt I wanted to do back in highschool. I'm now in my 4/5 year in university, and wondering if it's for me. I don't achieve or perform as great as others in my tax or accounting classes, and I did have a Financial Analyst co-op where I did financial reporting and found the work kind of boring at times (month-end). I'm just wondering if there's more out there I'm capable of doing. I just decided to do accounting because I'm not good with finance (stocks/bonds..etc), don't like actuarial sciences, and not a marketing finatic anyways. I have a math degree and feel like I could put that to use in other ways than I could (hence why Supply Chain Management is something I might consider).

Accounting just seems so stable in Ontario, Canada and the pay is pretty decent for work life balance if your in industry. I don't know what to do with my life anymore because I'm losing motivation in my university courses because of it.

How did you know that you wanted to pursue Accounting or pursue your CPA?

Accountants. What position do you want to end up or will probably end up at the end of your career? E.g. CFO at Fortune 500, Controller, partner and Big 4, etc.

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 01:04 PM PDT

Truthfully, Idk if I'll get there. But i want to be a CFO or a Controller.

Big 4 Internship Pickle due to Graduation Date Delay

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 08:27 PM PDT

I'm in a pickle: I've decided to delay my graduation date, which may harm my recruiting timeline for a Big 4 firm.

The situation begins with me doing the summer leadership program dealio with one Big 4 firm this summer 2019 (while I am an incoming junior). Ultimately, I am expecting an internship offer for 2020 from them, but I needed to notify them that my graduation date has been delayed from 2021 to 2022. I just decided (like a week ago, wayyy after I did all my summer leadership applications) that I will be spending one more year in school to pursue my master's in tax (even though I'll be graduating with enough credits to sit for the CPA exam in 2021 with my bachelor's). However, I'm pretty sure Big 4 firms do the internship the year before you work full-time, so I have reason to believe I may not get the internship for 2020 then if I plan to graduate 2022 now. So, my questions related to this are:

    • How likely is it that I could get a 2 year internship for 2020 and 2021 for a Big 4 before I work full-time?
    • How likely is it that they will let my delay to internship until 2021?
    • How likely is it that I will not be offered an internship since my graduation date (and ultimately full-time employment availability) changed, meaning that I will need to apply for the summer leadership program again next year?

Usually, I'm the type of person to just let this play out and see what happens, but I have another middle market accounting firm internship offer I need to accept or decline ASAP. So, I need to make some probability estimates on the Big 4 situation soon since my Big 4 recruiter is not getting back to me with answers to these questions. Thx! :^)

A lost student - advice please

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 05:39 PM PDT

Hey all I was hoping you could help me out as I am considering some things and just wanted some advice from people in the profession.

This all started about 6 months ago, a health problem I had got worse and made me realize I may have many less healthy years than I thought before. I still finished the fall semester strong.

The spring semester went ok. I cheated on some of the homework assignments. I relied on my friends to explain the concepts to me. I also found my passion in life that semester - running. All I thought about almost all day was running.

Anyway here we are today. I have to take summer classes to be ready for my internship in the winter at a big 4 firm. The summer classes are not going well. I can barely do the homework. I have no motivation to do accounting. I think I can make it through to getting bachelors degree because I really want a degree.

after that, I think I really need to take a year off and do some of the things I really wanted to do. I want to run a few ultras and hike long distances. I feel like if I don't do this I will be miserable at my job. A year to figure some things out in my life.

Honestly I don't know if I can do my internship anymore. I feel like the person they hired is nothing like the person I am after these ~9 months have passed.

    Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

How many recent grads on here got their own apartment after getting their offer?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 07:22 PM PDT

Were you able to live comfortably while living on your own? Rent has been at an all time high and most of my college peers still lived with their parents or had like 3+ roommates just to afford rent.

I started out at 50k and been wanting to get a condo, will this be enough money to make it through?

    Edit: Im in SoCal

I'm a bad speaker, will I survive in this field ?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 12:34 PM PDT

Hello, i currently am studying accounting at college. As I study and learn more about this field, the more anxious and worry I get. I think I can manage doing works but I heard your social skills matter a lot. Such as meeting recruiters, networking, interviewing, being promoted, etc. But, I worry because when I speak with others it makes me stutter and can't come up with words or sentences faster than others. I need to pause and roll my eyes and think then speak with others as English is not my primary language. Talking on the phone is the nightmare for me since it's harder to understand. And I'm very timid and socially awkward with people. I like to being alone than in group of people. I was wondering what I should do. Going public firm is not my option either. I just want a job with less human interaction with average pay like 50k. Thank you.

How many hours do you work in audit at the Big 4 or non-big 4?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 09:58 PM PDT

Just saw a similar post regarding tax and I'd love to know how many hours on average people in audit have to work. Provide as much information as you feel comfortable sharing (location, industry, position, firm, busy season, etc). Bonus points if anyone could share info for Vancouver as I've recently been recruited for a Fall 2020 full time position in a Big 4 there.

Hi, I am trying to learn how to properly record transactions on a ledger. Did I record the following set of transactions correctly?

My goal is to be able to tell the person how much their net income was.

I was smart enough to google that retained earnings is net income, but did I record the transactions properly?

The one I am most worried about is the Incurred Expenses.

Anyone work in the NFTS group at a big 4?

    Posted: 28 Jun 2019 08:15 PM PDT

I have the opportunity to switch groups within my firm to the national federal tax service group in a big city from the general business tax services group in a smaller city at a b4. Can anyone provide insight of what kind of work NFTS groups do? Is it harder/will I be traveling more? Is it worth doing to further advance my career?
