    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Technicals Tuesday - May 28, 2019

    Posted: 28 May 2019 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on technical analysis (TA), but if TA is not your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against TA here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Technical analysis (TA) uses historical price movements, real time data, indicators based on math and/or statistics, and charts; all of which help measure the trajectory of a security. TA can also be used to interpret the actions of other market participants and predict their actions

The main benefit to TA is that everything shows up in the price (commonly known as "priced in"): All news, investor sentiment, and changes to fundamentals are reflected in a security's price.

TA can be useful on any timeframe, both short and long term.

Do you think AT&T stock is a good buy for holding for a dividend?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 08:22 AM PDT

I just bought 25 shares of AT&T stock. AT&T just got warner bros inc. so I am figuring it is likely to go up. The thing is vanguard has a few people listing it as a sell. I mostly bought it for the dividend they pay out at over 6% and the fact that they have constant money coming in from cellular services. Do you feel AT&T is a good buy for it's price?

I was checking the square stock and realized it went downhill for the last 6 months but I couldn't really find a reason why.

No bad news and the earnings have been good. So what happened? Why is there a downtrend on square?

Question regarding 401K funds to purchase stock.

    Posted: 28 May 2019 10:54 AM PDT

Looking to get some information on a concern I've been having. Any info would be great. So currently I have a decent amount of previous 401K funds (Traditional and IRA) in my broker account. I've been using RH to purchase stocks since I started about 2 years ago. I was curious if I could use those, both traditional and IRA, funds to purchase stock. My main concern is, are there any drawbacks to using traditional 401K funds to purchase stocks? Should I use my IRA funds? or should I convert my rollover traditional into an IRA before I purchase stocks. Just wondering if I should even bother converting to IRA before purchasing the stock or just buy them with traditional funds. If I purchase stocks with the traditional funds is that grounds for early withdrawal? Or not?

I've been looking at Nvidia and seeing that it's been dipping and interested in dropping a decent amount. I'm a relatively safe but also at times volatile buyer.

    Thanks again.

Edit: Went ahead and did the conversion from Traditional IRA to Roth IRA. Gonna pay the taxes this year and use the funds to purchase stocks. Any information is still welcomed.

    $PHAS

    Posted: 28 May 2019 01:23 PM PDT

Stock is looking good, with over 10% growth today. I'm thinking of buying once there is a sell off. As for a year forecast, it looks like Phas will be up at $18 as a low and $23 as a high. Can't really find any faults in the company except that it doesn't have much of a history. Thoughts?

Been thinking about buying UPWK, but was wondering why it's so low

    Posted: 28 May 2019 12:06 PM PDT

I read that the stock was over bought.. I'm guessing that means it's over saturated. Does that make it a bad buy? Motley fool still recommends I buy, but I'm not sure now. It's very cheap

Amazon Is Poised to Unleash a Long-Feared Purge of Small Suppliers

    Posted: 28 May 2019 12:02 PM PDT

    https://finance.yahoo.com/news/amazon-poised-unleash-long-feared-090000236.html

(Bloomberg) -- Two months ago, Amazon.com Inc. halted orders from thousands of suppliers with no explanation. Panic ensued -- until the orders quietly resumed weeks later, with Amazon suggesting the pause was part of a campaign to weed out counterfeit products. Suppliers breathed a sigh of relief.

Now a larger, more permanent purge is coming that will upend the relationship between the world's largest online retailer and many of its long-time vendors.

What are some "Ron Popeil" stylized stocks?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 06:51 AM PDT

Looking for suggestions for the "Set it and forget it method" such as coined by Ron Popeil. HaHa. I'm showing my age here.

So my 401k is doing remarkably well and so is my IRA; however i'm looking to begin investing solo with my partner, he's thinking that it's impossible, however we've done well so far and figure that as long as we stay on top of things and pay attention to trends, we should be fine as opposed to our managed accounts.

Anywho, any suggestion/s are/is greatly appreciated.

Hope you all have a great day!!!!

    gun company Charts!

    Posted: 28 May 2019 10:20 AM PDT

I'm off and on interested in gun companies for a variety of reasons. "Chart patterns" always scare me away tho thankfully.

I expect we really are nearing the market top and I want to start positioning myself in defensive stuff.

The chart for RGR is beautiful. So beautiful I bought twice as much as I was thinking about.

Then I looked at AOBC, liked the pattern and bought.

Then I looked at VSTO and maybe lost my mind. The stock recently has a daily pattern of doing well in the morning (the "dumb" money?) and then tanking in the afternoon which is typically the smarter money. This is also the general direction of the stock.

For some reason I just went ahead and bought planning to sell soon, and maybe even short sell to hedge my industry exposure. Im familiar with these ideas I'm blurting out, but never do this sort of thing. Just hoping someone would talk some sense into me. Probably selling momentarily.

Edit has a nice support level, I'm gonna set a stop loss and hold maybe

What are your Top 7 Tariff (LONG HOLD) stocks?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 05:55 AM PDT

So i've been reading up a few books on investing / markets; and i've found that i'm more of a "passive" investor, with that said i'm looking towards some China / Tariff influenced stocks. I've been pilfering through some online investment resources, and the majority consensus is to purchase stocks affected by Tarrifs / China wars.

With that said what are your Top 7 stocks that you see sprouting in the long term?

I'm looking to hop back into BABA even though it's roughly 20-30% higher then my last purchase (during the last tariff issue), along with JD, and have profited still (At least on BABA).

Since the last tariff war i did sell off X almost entirely. However i kept almost everything else.

    Dividend play success?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 04:56 AM PDT

Have you done a dividend play? Buy something right before ex-dividend and sell it right after?

    Which?

    Did it work?

I've had mixed results. The first was SYX because they announced a 1 time $6.50/share dividend. I bought too soon and it tanked before. I managed to get out with a marginal loss. Others have gone better but I always remember the losses more than the winners.

Question about forex trading in the Islamic world

Hey everyone! Sorry If I am posting this in the wrong area but as a non-Muslim I am curious about Forex trading in the Islamic world.

What should a forex broker do to ensure that its activities comply with Shariah law, and what features should trader's accounts have in this connection? Do halal accounts give brokers any advantage over competitors?

I know there is a lot of discussion on this and how it is Haram or Halal and I just wanted to learn more about it.

Strong stocks - is there any more room to grow?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 08:09 AM PDT

I'm speaking about the AAPL, MSFT, WM, PLNT, DIS, MA, GOOGL, AMZN etc

Most of you have some of the above stocks in your portfolio, I don't. My main issue with them is the room to grow even if their finances are great. After reading the prospectus, the 10k, I don't see them expanding and growing. As I said, they have great CEOs and books but what about the vision for the future?

We can argue that Disney expended by taking a bite in the streaming business but the rest?

    Questions about Smart Order Routing

    Posted: 28 May 2019 06:54 AM PDT

I really couldn't find a simple FAQ via Google, that's why I am asking here.

I wanted to buy AMD. But then I was wondering why I cant buy from Nasdaq. Instead, there is a list which has "Smart" preselected and has several other entries like NYSE, AMEX. But I want to buy in Nasdaq, not in Nyse or Amex. What do I do? I couldn't find anything via Google if SMART affects from which stock market I am buyng the stocks.

do you think stock prices is discrete or continuous, and why?

    Posted: 28 May 2019 12:41 AM PDT

I'm fairly new to stock market, and would like to learn more about stock market analysis. My question is, do you think stock prices are discrete or continuous, or maybe both?

I feel like in certain important dates like black friday, or new year, some stock' price raise, and some decrease; however, people also analyze stock market in different ways, like looking at the past x-days/months/years price movement. So, what do you think on this?
