Graduated with my Bachelor's in Accounting. Now what?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 06:54 PM PDT

Just graduated 2 weeks ago with my B.S. in Accounting! I've been looking and applying for staff accounting roles or accounting internships but still no offers (been applying since march). My plan is to take a gap year before going into the Macc. I plan on gaining work experience in the field before I invest time and money into the Macc. So I should be in the Macc by fall of 2020. I also plan on sitting for the CPA once I get into the Macc program. Is this a pretty reasonable timeline? or should I be studying for the CPA right now? i've been researching the requirements to sit for the CPA and it looks like for my state (Kansas) i only need 120 to sit but the 150 to get licensed. I also need 30 credit hours of Accounting to sit (i think?) but the accounting program at my school was only 19 credit hours (which involved AIS, Intermediate 1 + 2, Managerial 2, Intro. to Taxation, Intro. to Audit). I also don't want to practice/stay in Kansas, so should I be looking at other state requirements instead?

Edit: just looked again and I actually need 150 credits to sit for the exam in Kansas

    Offer letter

    Posted: 29 May 2019 06:57 PM PDT

Hello, I just received an offer letter for an internship over email. There is a place on the form where it looks like I'm supposed to sign.

Am I supposed to mail the letter in with my signature?

Electronically sign it and send the attachment letter along with a few words accepting the offer via email?

Or should I give the office a call? I know I'm probably over thinking it,

    Thanks.

Are dark colored dress shirts appropriate for events with the B4?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 07:40 PM PDT

Dark colors such as black, dark grey, navy, etc. for socials and other B4 office event? I have not started my internship yet so I am not sure. Any input would be highly appreciated

Did anybody go Big 4 for reasons other than kool-aid, prestige, or exit opportunities?

Did any of you switch majors too accounting?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 07:04 PM PDT

Hello current lerker here for this semester lol... So basically I am about to end my 3rd year at CC unfortunately. Spent the first year not knowing what to take lol. Now I'm on the right track originally going for a Comp Sci degree, but business 1a or financial accounting was part of my GE. that or Law 5. And i have to say I really enjoyed accounting, and the business side to it. I enjoy it more than coding, self taught from high school, and its actually fun and I look forward to doing accounting homework test etc, gotten all A's on the past 3 test got one final coming next week.

Anyways, my main question is if any of you switched majors like in my case. Im honestly thinking about majoring in business admin or accountancy because I legit enjoyed the class. I do have a couple questions of course like is CPA required to make good money in this field, and exactly what kind of classes do you need to take for the 150 credits? Does it have to be specifically accounting classes orrr? Any feedback is welcomed and thank you!

    Should I take this opportunity?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 05:27 PM PDT

Just want to ask more experienced folks in accounting industry about my situation and potential opportunity.

A quick background: I have a mix of both public and industry experience totaling about 10 years. More meaningful experience came about 6 years ago at EY where I stayed for 4 years (got out as manager). I was in a F500 company in operations for 2 years since and now I am at a pre-IPO in technical accounting (been here about 8 months). To prep for the IPO, the company is looking for someone with S-1 and SEC reporting background. However, I guess I have been doing some solid work and was approached by management whether I would be interested in this role (would be a promotion and I would able to build a team). The concern to me is that I don't have any S-1/IPO experience and SEC reporting from preparation perspective.

I know it will involve long hours and hard work, but I am not new to that. I am just not sure how difficult it would be to learn and adjust. Does anyone have similar experience? Ultimately, should I take the position?

Did I make a big career mistake?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 06:33 AM PDT

Hi everyone. Just a quick backstory. I interned for a big 4 and then got my masters and started full time in audit for the same firm. They assigned me to a client a few hours away and was notorious for being a hard client. After a few months my anxiety and depression caused serious health problems so I was out on medical leave and tried to come back but left shortly after I returned full time to the same client.

I took some time to get my health back and started with a recruiter who set me up on interviews but didn't lead to anything because he brought up my health to the companies. I then reached out to find a government job on my own. After I accepted the government audit job the recruiter basically told me I was committing career suicide but I still went with the government job since I thought it was the right move at the time.

After a few months here I'm doing well in work but still have some doubts if I made the right choice. Do you think taking this government job will hurt my career in the future or do you think I should reach out to my old team and coworkers to start public career again?

Thank you in advance for all the help as I'm confused and lost as to what I should do next.

Worth Choosing National Firm Over Big 4?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 04:00 PM PDT

I currently have two big 4 and two national firm (think BDO/RSM/GT) internship offers. From the associates I've talked to, it seems like national firms work a little bit less hours and the environment tends to be less super competitive. Now my question is, would it ever be worth choosing a national firm over a big 4 if you know that you might not want to stay in public accounting forever? If I'm missing anything please let me know, I'm just a student after all.

What should I learn to start career in big 4?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 05:39 PM PDT

Yes, I know, name of the post seem kind of funny and ambitious.

I'm Business Administration student in my 3rd year with very weak education in Finance/Accounting, but I'm getting serious time to time and start learning hard.

I'm curious what and from where should I start studying accounting independently - should I aim ACCA books or CPA?
How many books should I pass to have a enough qualification for internship?

    Thanks in advance.

Online Accounting Classes at Community College. Good or bad idea? Neither? Do all community colleges have aacsb?

I plan on going this route with a future math undergrad so I can get into business easier while not being centered around an accounting firm.

    CFE day 2

    Posted: 29 May 2019 09:11 PM PDT

Hey I am writing CFE this September with tax as my day 2 role.

Just wondering if anybody selected tax as their depth and how did they study for it? What resources did you use to review your technicals and what topics are likely to be tested? Thanks!

Should 1.25$ an hour influence your internship decision at all?

    Posted: 29 May 2019 02:28 PM PDT

Say one big four offers $22.50 an hour and the other $23.75. Would I be a fool in taking this into account for my decision?
