Went to ER, admitted to hospital, had surgery as a result. Surgeon was out of network.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 07:06 PM PDT

Last November, I ended up in the emergency room with a very high fever and a painful abscess. They end up admitting me and a day later decided that I needed surgery. Everything went well and I was on my way home a few days later.

I received several bills over the next month, but because we had a HSA with our insurance, we would typically wait for a second billing.

Everything was going as expected, except I never received a second bill from the surgeon. His bill was for $6600 which is greater than our maximum out of pocket. Since I never received another bill, I thought everything was good.

Then earlier this year, I found out that insurance had refused to pay the surgeon because he was out of network, I also found out that they had sold my debt to a debt collector. I got in touch with the debt collector, they helped me file an appeal due to the fact that I was admitted through the ER and did not have a choice of who did the surgery.

Well, I found out today that the appeal was denied. I'm back to owing $6600 because the surgeon was out of network.

I'm a school teacher, and my wife works in access services at the very hospital I was at. $6600 is a lot of money for us.

Our insurance is through her employer, which makes this even more baffling, that they would deny coverage of a surgeon in their own hospital.

    Roof Claim is taking forever

    Posted: 09 Apr 2019 03:38 AM PDT

I'll try to keep this brief. I live in Florida and experienced a roof leak in August and the insurance co immediately sent out a crew and had that section tarped. That was great. The roof itself was installed 10 years ago, but it turns out the roof was pretty jacked up following a major hailstorm that hit the area in March last year. On my street alone, include my neighbors on each side, about 12 houses have had new roofs put on since the hailstorm

We put a claim into our insurance and they sent their adjusters out. I've never dealt with this before, but it seemed like the two people they sent were just doing their best to get the heck out of there as fast as possible. Inside and on the roof took a grand total of 30 minutes, and thats partially because there was a storm on the way and when they heard the first thunder crack they were gone, which is perfectly understandable. But maybe it being that quick is normal.

A couple weeks later I get their decision which is they're give me a couple hundred bucks for the ceiling drywall but nothing for the roof, and oh yeah, my deductible is $1,000.

Like I said, there seems to be solid evidence that this hailstorm seriously impacted my area and is the primary cause of this leak. So I can't accept this decision. I did a little research and in December we decided to hire a private adjuster to represent us. He comes out and inspects the roof and the interior and it turns out he's seeing moisture in the ceiling all over the place. Almost every room except the guest bath. They do their measurements, prepare their estimate for the claim and submit to my insurance company.

The most recent actions taken were the sworn statement and proof of loss was sent to the insurance company about a week ago. This entire time, the insurance company has not sent anyone back to the house. And according to my adjuster getting a call or email back for a status is like pulling teeth.

I'm just getting frustrated because this is taking forever. I don't know if its my guy or the insurance company, or a combination of both, but I did not think this would be such a long process.

So I guess my question is - does it sound like I'm nearing the end of this? Any idea when I can expect the insruance company's decision? Any guess on if this is going to work out in my favor based on this information?

And all the while the tarp is still up there and the HOA is giving me a real hard time about it.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I got a letter last week from my insurance agent saying the policy would be cancelled if I didn't provide proof of the repair by July. I tried to explain I'm working with the carrier who is still reviewing a pending claim. they said proof by July or its cancelled.

Looking for an auto insurance which covers anyone who drives my vehicle

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 11:31 AM PDT

    Hi.

(I thought this question would have been asked here on this sub before, but I searched and I cannot find one.).

I am looking for an insurance provider that allows my friends (and family) to drive my truck. I have another car which i use most of the time and often get asked for my truck. I also find myself out of the country a lot due to professional reasons and leaving/loaning my vehicle with friends. Some of my friends now feel un-easy to accept my truck for liability reasons. Could anyone give me any advice, and suggestions about such a policy on their vehicle?

    I have a 2016 pick up truck.

My current liability limits are 250/500/100.

The collision deductible is $500 and comprehensive is $500

    I have full cover insurance.

I pay $2,289.74 for 1 year with SafeCo insurance.

(My truck is too long to fit in my garage. This is the chief reason I find myself having to give my truck to others for extended periods.)

    Thanks!

Homeowners Insurance - Payment for Claim was more than cost of repairs.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 01:00 PM PDT

Earlier today, I received a request from my homeowners insurance company asking for records (invoices, etc) related to a claim about 18 months ago, saying they will cancel my policy if I don't provide them.

What happened was a leaking pipe caused water damage in my bathroom, and the damaged pipe was below the slab, which added a fair amount to the cost of the repairs. The contractor I hired found a less expensive way to do the repairs (cut off the leaking pipe and run the plumbing through the walls), which led to me saving about $2500 on the repairs.

Is this going to be an issue? I'm seeing conflicting information online. Are they just checking to see that I had the work done, or are they going to raise an issue that I found a less expensive way to do the job?

    Thanks!

Can I ask insurers for diminished compensation after car accident?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:51 PM PDT

My car is 2017 Honda Civic with about 14,000 mileages...it's pretty new car. The accident wasn't very serious which the front right bumper needs to repair. The estimate cost is about $2800. Will this kind of accident reduce my car value when I sell it? Am I eligible to claim this compensation? (It's not my fault) Anyone has such experience? Also, I got an Attorney for it. I told him about diminished compensation, but he said he doesn't anything about it. I think he's just not willing to do it. Right now my car just got to repair... waiting for answers. Thanks

    Wisdom tooth extraction under DHMO

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 09:49 PM PDT

Has anyone had their impacted wisdom teeth taken out using DHMO? My Metlife plan states that if I go to a dentist and they refer me to a contracted specialty provider, then I will only have to pay what is in my schedule of benefits ($300) total. However, it states that the "removal of asymptomatic third molars is not a covered benefit unless pathology (disease) exists. There is no abscess or infection, but my back molars are starting to hurt as they grow in more.

I want to know if a contracted oral surgeon on an HMO plan is still good or I should just fork over the money and pick a surgeon that has good reviews and reputation. My DHMO plan does not give you a directory of who is considered a "contracted specialty provider" so there is no way for me to research or look them up. My current dentist is one of the big chain dentists, but as far as I know, they don't have oral surgeons.

Lost wages, Not injured. At fault's insurance refuses to pay.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 08:41 AM PDT

I was recently in a vehicle accident last month. During this time I had to expend my own personal time as I was unable to make it to work due to the accident. I had no injuries, but the at fault's party refused to give me a rental until 30 days after the accident as their insured refused to give a statement.

They now say due to New York law I have to go through my insurance for injuries sustained or lost wages. I hadn't sustained any injuries, but I was told my wages would be covered. Now they're refusing to pay me out for my personal time I had to use.

GF cancelled her health insurance. now can't get new IP?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 06:18 PM PDT

Why can't my GF get a new insurance plan till November if it's required by law?

I'll make this short. GF had to register for health insurance this year. Picked Kaiser, silver package beginning of January. Financial stuff changed, and she had to downgrade to bronze. 3 months of terrible customer service later she still doesn't have insurance. Medication costs are taking a financial toll, and the stress of not being covered have worn her down. She just called again, and was told she can't choose a new insurance till Nov. She claims no one ever told her that. She was already cancelled so she decided to pick a new company. She's telling me that she can't get a new plan from anyone till Nov. I have VA medical and don't know anything about this. I've googled quite a bit and found nothing useful. We live in Washington State.

TLDR; GF cancelled health insurance, now can't get new policy. Seriously?

    Cut off by a bus

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 04:36 PM PDT

12:30PM during the lunch rush in a busy area with lots of people walking to/from lunch where I'm driving ("restaurant row"). It's a one-way 3-lane road, a public transportation bus abruptly moves into my lane. No time to brake, so I move over a bit to avoid getting nailed by this bus and someone parked on the street (not fully off to the side) in a no parking zone, is out just enough that my passenger side mirror clips theirs. No damage to either car's mirror but she files a claim anyway. My insurance says I'm at fault. Zero accidents or anything on my driving record since I got my license 16 years ago.

Is this normal? Claims lady says even if the bus is at fault, they're a government entity and have immunity - so they'd be stuck with the bill anyway. She suggested from an insurance perspective I should have let the bus hit me. This is horrible to say because there are always people standing between cars in this area and if the bus pushed me into a car, someone could have been killed, not to mentioned cars that would have likely been totaled. If a little girl ran out between the cars, would they say I should have let her bounce off my car? I highly doubt it but that seems to be the same principle. Same if someone runs a stop sign so to avoid a collision I swerve and clip a parked car. How am I the one at fault for this other drivers negligence? Any suggestions/advice?

Refinancing from unsecured to secured mid claim

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 04:03 PM PDT

So I filed a claim for the damaged frame of my vehicle. It's possible to fix it but they may salvage the car if they under value it. Currently waiting for the adjuster to come look at it still.

It's a clean title at the moment, and I used an unsecured loan to buy the vehicle with a high interest rate. I now have the chance to refinance with a secured loan for 10x less interest.

Will switching to a secured loan mid claim interfere with the claim? I feel this is my only chance to get a lower rate. I'll be using the car as collateral.

StateFarm found me responsible for collision and their reasoning is incorrect. Any additional recourse?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 03:00 PM PDT

So a week ago I was hit from behind by a white Tahoe. I was backing out of a driveway onto a rather busy street. While waiting, the car in front of the woman ahead of me noticed I was trying to back up and pulled as close to the person in front of them at the light. The person who hit me had pulled stopped at least 1.5 car lengths away from that person, which was definitely before the driveway I was in. I took that as she was letting me out. I drive a aqua blue focus, and it was sunny out. Further up the road, there is a 4-way intersection with a light. Our lane turned into two about 75ft further up with the center lane being a left turn lane.

I saw our light turn green with the arrow, so I knew no cars would be coming my way. I backed up my vehicle, stopped, put it into drive and began turning my wheel to start turning. This was by the time the arrow had turned yellow. Just then I noticed in my side mirror that she hit the gas and that was when she hit me. She lifted my back tire off the ground and was able to turn my car almost 90 degrees to the point where I was looking at the driveway I came out of.

Needless to say the police arrived and they sided with me, which they were going to put into the report. She said I had crossed three lanes and reversed into her. I asked her if she was on her phone or preoccupied because I couldn't understand how she didn't see my vehicle in the daylight.... there was no way I was not seeing hers. Plus this street is busy around rush hour so the line of cars behind her made it impossible to see her.

I told my story to StateFarm. They asked if I took pictures and I said I had. A few days later I got a call that they found me 100% at fault. I was furious so I called back to ask why. They said that I didn't have control of the road and that I didn't have control of my car? She told her insurance provider that I reversed into her (actually that I was rear-ended by reversing into her). I asked why they chose not to believe what I have said to both them and the police and their response was that the other insurance said it was my fault so that was pretty much that.

I told them that the pictures of my tread on the road say differently, that I was pushed up the hill and that she twisted my car around. They were surprised to hear that I had pictures and to send them. I asked if they had received the police report and they said that they hadn't. So how in the world can they make a decision like that without asking for any evidence?!?!

I sent them the pictures and a google map overhead view of where the accident happened. Within an hour they had changed their outcome to me being 60% at fault and her 40%. Saying that I reversed into her without control of my vehicle and she used negligence, didn't try to evade and also ran into me. I'm confused....

How can an insurance company that I've been with for 20 years not ask for proof and not fight for me? Instead they just flop over on their backs and blame me 100%. And then even with the tread going in the direction of traffic, me saying she was not watching the road, they still don't wait for the police report to come out?!?! At the very least, the verdict should be 50/50 in blame. But what is most upsetting is that they didn't even think to ask about pictures, the police report, video, etc. Instead, they blindly go off of her statements (which were a complete lie) and blame me?!?!

Question: Any recourse I have other than just dealing with this and going elsewhere? My vehicles and homeowners is through them. If anything happened to my wife or I or our house I honestly do not feel that they have my interests at heart. I know they are an insurance company and will do what they want for the most part. But what other options do I have regarding this claim???

    TL;DR

I got hit when backing out of driveway. StateFarm put me at 100% to blame by only listening to her statement and not considering mine. Never asked for pics/video/police report. Once I sent them pics they changed is 60% my fault and still say I reversed into her and they still haven't reviewed the police report. I don't feel safe with StateFarm as my insurance carrier and I want to fight this because she was negligent and I was not. What else can I do?

I'm trying to remember a term regarding life insurance.

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 10:32 AM PDT

When a life insurance company approves your policy so you pay your monthly premiums until you fall ill. Then when you try to collect, they determine you had a preexisting condition, and you never qualified the whole time, so instead of paying out the policy, your premiums are returned.

Alternatively, you go through testing at the beginning before you are approved, so you know the whole time you are actually covered.

Can anyone remind me what these scenarios are called?

    Insurance Claim Fears

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 01:46 PM PDT

So last October I got into an accident on the way to my high school, I was 17. The lady went around a curve, slammed on her breaks, and by the time I went around and noticed she was stopped, I tried slamming my breaks but my car didn't stop and I hit her. My car was totaled and her car had around $5,000 of damage. 5 months later, my insurance company sent me today a demand letter from an injury lawyer asking for the maximum my liability insurance covers to account for medical bills + pain/suffering.

I'd never gotten into anything like this before and I'm still incredibly scared. The insurance agent told my mom that because they asked for an amount covered by my policy we didn't have to worry. My biggest fear is that something happens with this, she sues, and I can't go to college because of the insanely high costs I'd have to pay back. I've been terrified of this for 4 months now since I got a call saying she'd gotten a lawyer early this year, and I don't know if the news I got today should be a relief and whether the agent is being entirely truthful or not.

What to do after total loss situation with Geico?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 01:27 PM PDT

After our car was claimed a total loss and we received payment, its been like 2 weeks and they still haven't picked up the car. We've had to leave it at a friend's garage for 3 months now from the beginning since it was a hit and run (nowwhere else to put it in NYC).

It feels bad enough to have left it there for three months but every time I call, the adjuster isn't there which is pretty frustrating. What if I didn't have a friend who could hold it, would they force the person to pay for storage until they pick it up?

Hit parked car - do I file an insurance claim?

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 11:07 AM PDT

In order to avoid a car, I sideswiped a parked car on a narrow street where cars were parked on both side of the road.

Do I file a claim through my insurance? The damage is superficial, but it's definitely all scuffed up. My deductible is $1000, I'm figuring to fix the damage on the other vehicle would cost less then that, but wtf do I know. The damage to my car is negligible. So do I just work this out with the guy and the auto body shop or should I call my insurance?

    Unreported damage prior to accident

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 07:03 AM PDT

Recently had an accident (not my fault) and I'm worried about submitting a claim. The vehicle isn't paid off so I'm sure there's some obligation to keep it in good repair but I actually have other damage that wasn't reported already (that was my fault; no other drivers involved). I kind of think anyone with a trained eye would know my recent accident didn't cause all the damage so I'm inclined to disclose that up front. To make things worse I work for my car insurance company so if they catch me in a lie there's a fair chance I'm getting fired. Other than paint transfer I could probably fix all the damage myself.

    Advice?

    Insuring Storage Unit contents

    Posted: 08 Apr 2019 08:41 AM PDT

Recently, spouse and I moved from state A, to state B.

In state A I have/had (have not cancelled yet) a renter's insurance policy, along with car insurance.

In moving to state B, I completely understand the car insurance update, but I'm not sure about insuring the contents of our storage unit that we still have in state A.

We do not have/need a home/renter's policy in state B at this time, and my expectation would be that a renter's policy in state B wouldn't cover personal property in state A.

Would we want a policy that covers personal property for the amount of coverage of our storage unit contents?

Would it matter about the state that the items were, in reference to where the policy was written?

I am working on reaching out to agents in state B, but I wanted to ask the minds of this subreddit, as I've seen outstanding advice.
