Using logarithmic chart data to find cheap stocks. - Charlie Munger Posted: 05 Apr 2019 09:33 PM PDT At least twice Charlie Munger has said that Value Line logarithmic charts over a long period of time are the most valuable investing tool he can think of. Peter Lynch also used log charts to help him manage his successful mutual fund. What do you extrapolate from this statement that can be made useful for investing success? A hypothesis that I would submit is that an investor should wait for extremes in logarithmic data, the greater the extreme in standard deviation, the greater the potential mispricing. The data that should be viewed in a log perspective should be not only price, but also other relevant and reliable valuation ratios that can be charted. The analysis would be made more reliable for stocks where decades of data is available, and where the fundamental story (past present and future) of the company is well understood by the analyst.
