    r/Stocks Daily Discussion & Options Trading Thursday - Apr 25, 2019

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 01:06 AM PDT

This is the daily discussion, so anything stocks related is fine, but the theme for today is on stock options, but if options aren't your thing then just ignore the theme and/or post your arguments against options here and not in the current post.

Some helpful day to day links, including news:

Required info to start understanding options:

    • Call option Investopedia video basically a call option allows you to buy 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to buy
    • Put option Investopedia video a put option allows you to sell 100 shares of a stock at a certain price (strike price), but without the obligation to sell

See the following word cloud and click through for the wiki:

Call option - Put option - Exercising an option - Strike price - ITM - OTM - ATM - Long options - Short options - Combo - Debit - Credit or Premium - Covered call - Naked - Debit call spread - Credit call spread - Strangle - Iron condor - Vertical debit spreads - Iron Fly

If you have a basic question, for example "what is delta," then google "investopedia delta" and click the investopedia article on it; do this for everything until you have a more in depth question or just want to share what you learned.

    Buying 3M (MMM) at $185

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 10:50 AM PDT

I plan on buying 3M if it gets down to the 185 area, I am a college student and I am investing mainly for long term appreciation as dividend growth. This would be something I buy with plans to sell in the future. What are your opinions? 185 would capture a 3.11% starting yield.

    Question about understanding ETF

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 11:09 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I have a few questions regarding understanding the numbers behind ETFs.

    1. Is there any implication or insight to be gained from relationship between NAV and the current stock price? Does it just mean that you are getting a better deal if you can buy lower than the NAV?
    2. I am new to investing and just wanted to clarify why some ETF/ETN's have time decaying value. Does this only affect indexes that include futures/options?

    Thanks in advance!

    $MO thoughts

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 08:49 AM PDT

What are your thoughts on Altria? I like their stake in Juul and CRON, and believe they are well managed, but am mildly concerned about the future of tobacco. They missed earnings this morning and I think maybe it might be a good time to buy in soon since it's pretty far from its high in 2017 of around $80 a share.

Did Huami just drop 20% in 2 days?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 01:52 PM PDT

On April 23 it was at $12.62, on Apr 24 at $11.11 (a 10% drop), and today on Apr 25 it's at $9.81 (another 10% drop). It's now near its all-time-low of $9.67

All this because the company is raising money by selling further stocks worth $77 million (the company's market cap itself is worth $600, so this makes it 12%). According to this, investors don't feel the money will be used to increase profit and it only dilutes the value of the company among its largest stakeholders.

Still, even with that said, Huami's revenue beats estimates, it has new contracts with Amazon and Timex and is the strategic parter of Xiaomi. With such great outlook why would it fall so much so soon?

Interesting time we’re in right now

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 01:33 PM PDT

All these stocks killing earnings and peaking (microsoft, amazon, disney, fb) we're really about to reach a new high in the spy... only concern is about how long we can sustain that and if there'd be another sell off like we saw dec. last year.

Thoughts on ANTM and Healthcare sector

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 12:14 PM PDT

Is all the noise around Medicare for All over? UNH and ANTM crushed earnings and dropped over the past month. Is it finally time for them to make a run?

Only asking because I have 1/17/2020 option on ANTM strike at 270. Lost half the value, but now at -10%.

    Polarization of Tesla

    Posted: 24 Apr 2019 09:24 PM PDT

To any seasoned members of this subreddit, have you ever seen a company, and CEO as polarizing as Tesla and Elon in the time you've been following the markets.

No matter what online site or twitter feed, there is constant bashing of not only the company but Elon as well. While I do think there is plenty to criticize Tesla for (Elon's Twitter, always setting deadlines that aren't reached, failure in reaching profitability, etc ...) but some of the stuff that is said is pretty outrageous.

I am neither Long or Short the company, however I do think what they've accomplished is something to be applauded, although whether they survive or not is yet to be seen, just curious about the history of previous cases like this one.

Why Not Us? Uber Drivers Unite As Execs Prepare To Profit From IPO

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 10:00 AM PDT

    http://fortune.com/2019/04/25/uber-ipo-drivers-stock/

Mostafa Maklad, 35, is already nostalgic about the good old days of driving for Uber. Five years ago, snaking across the freeways and suburban streets of Los Angeles he estimates he made roughly $50 an hour working 40 hours a week. Now, that figure is around $26 an hour and he works about 75 hours. Much of that money goes back home to his family in Egypt. Then three years ago, he says he was forced to downsize his living conditions in part due to the financial strain. While he once had his own room, he now lives with two others in one bedroom. Having completed 9,000 rides for Uber, Maklad is eligible for a $500 bonus when Uber, which recently filed a prospectus for its IPO, goes public. And while these bonuses, which go up to as much as $10,000, are meant as a nod to drivers who have complained about pay, it's done little to address their concerns.

TTD keeps going up without any news?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 07:05 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I luckily got in on The Trade Desk at $74/share on 5/11/18 (couple weeks out for long term tax bracket!) and am used to see it go up rapidly.

However I'm curious about this past week. It's earnings are set to report on 5/9 but today the stock is opening at about +3.5% and last week it had a +6% day gain and I cannot find any information on what is driving these increases. I generally look for news on Etrade and yahoo finance and here and have not seen it mentioned but over the last 5 days it has gone up a crazy 11%.

What is causing this and why is this information seemingly not readily available?

    40k in my 457

What is the deal with Antero Resources (AR)?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2019 11:34 AM PDT

The stock has great fundamentals with excellent cash flow but has been dropping in share value. I understand that it is tied to natural gas but the book value > 20 and has a p/e <15

Hoping for any clarity on what I am missing.
