Verizon is activating its 5G mobile network in Chicago and Minneapolis.

Customers can expect speeds up to 1Gbps, which is about 10x faster than you might normally get.

Only one phone supports the network right now.

Every single Fed tightening cycle has ended with an earnings recession except in 1994

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:23 PM PDT

In the mid-1990s consumer credit exploded with the highest yearly growth being 15%. The mid-1990s was the start of the housing bubble. That bubble extended the expansion to 10 years. This time American consumers are deleveraging, the Eurozone's household debt to GDP ratio is falling, and China's investments to GDP are falling. The same debt driven catalysts that existed on the consumer side in previous decades are less of a factor today to prop up corporate earnings growth.

The good news is 82% of the first 22 S&P 500 firms beat Q1 EPS estimates on 4.1% growth.

    92% chance of earnings recession

So, if I lend shares to a shorting position, I am paid out by my broker of just interest? Or am I paid for the shares in total at current price, and still get them back once the position is closed? Is there anyway I can live just off lending my shares.

Chaparral Energy Inc. (CHAP) market price absurdly low?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 07:02 PM PDT

So I'm not a great security investor, but I like some educated gambling. My analysis usually doesn't go much further than looking up a company's latest 10K on EDGAR (SEC). But I've done a fair bit of research on Chaparral and I can't for the life of me figure out why it's trading so low. This is either an investment of a lifetime or I just threw away a lot of money.

Market Price: fluctuating between 5.00 and 6.00 (currently 5.09) I bought at 5.07

Book Price: (total assets - total liabilities)/common stock outstanding = ~24.00

Already I'm smelling a deal. EPS this year was something like 0.14 cents, so it wasn't a loss.

Price earnings ratio was something like 8 or 9. The oil/natural gas exploration/drilling sector has a norm of 20-25 PE ratio.

They have more than enough current assets to cover debt interest etc. I realize we have an abundance of oil in the economy right now, but the price just does not seem to fit.

    Any insights?

    Stock Market Finds Thirteen Supports

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 03:47 PM PDT

    Key Points

    • Last week, we were looking at multiple sectors testing resistance levels.
    • This week, we see even more indices testing support levels.
    • This is likely a key moment for the future short-term direction of stocks.
    • We will need to wait and see whether the supports hold or not.

No charts, but you can read the blog here: https://www.brtechnicals.com/fr-thirteen-supports/

    From Resistance to Support

Just last week we were watching sectors for potential breakouts. These sectors were testing resistance levels at their October/November highs. Then, a couple days later a dovish Fed spooked the markets, and sent interest rates falling.

The biggest loser from the list of sectors we were watching was the financials. You can read our last analysis Treasury Yields Impact Financial Stocks. Now we are seeing many sectors fall to their 50-day moving average supports, or another type of support.

The List of Indices Testing a Support

    • Nasdaq Composite – Testing October high support level.
    • Nasdaq-100 – Testing October high support level.
    • S&P 500 – Flirting with Oct/Nov High support.
    • Consumer Discretionary (XLY) – Testing October high support level.
    • Financials (XLF) – Testing/Just under a key level.
    • Health Care (XLV) – Testing 50-day moving average.
    • Industrials (XLI) – Testing 50-day moving average.
    • Materials (XLB) – Testing 50-day moving average.
    • Aerospace & Defense (XAR) – Testing 200-day moving average.
    • Oil & Gas Equipment (XES) – Testing 50-day moving average.
    • Pharmaceuticals (XPH) – Testing 50-day moving average.
    • Retail (XRT) – Testing 50-day moving average.
    • Telecom (XTL) – Testing 50-day moving average.

    The 50-Day Moving Average

The 50-day moving average is an important level to watch because many investors, traders, and algorithmic traders use the stat as a way to trade. When a stock or ETF reaches the average from above, it can be a signal to open, or add to an existing position. If the stock or ETF falls past the 50-day moving average it could be a signal to sell.

With this understanding, we can use the position of the 50-day moving average relative to price to understand where the trader's bias is. If price is above the average, the bias is towards the upside. If price is below the average, then the bias is towards the downside.

    What it Means

Thirteen different indices, in multiple sectors and industries, are testing a support level after a dovish Fed sent stocks and interest rates lower. That is a lot of stocks, and it tells us the stock market is acting highly correlated. This usually occurs when there is fear in the markets.

However, I am not sure what this means exactly. The last time I saw this many sectors and industries meeting supports at the same time was Christmas Eve, 2018. This was the bottom of the 20% slide in the S&P 500. Also, last week we were looking at several sectors testing similar resistance levels, and the resistance held. But, this is a very small sample size, and I cannot say with any certainty that the supports will hold.

Whatever this setup means, it is likely going to be an important moment for stocks, and their short-term outlooks. If we see that most of the indices move in a similar direction, then it is likely stocks continue in that direction over the short-term. For now, we will just need to wait and see.
