Looking to immegrate to the States and I need advice

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:36 PM PDT

I don't know if this is the right place to ask, Mods please delete if you feel the need.

I am an Insurance Auto Claims Loss Adjuster/Damage Appraiser (Or what we around here are called an Assessor) qualified, in South Africa. Things recently went from Not Good to Really Bad in a short space of time, but not wanting to go into this much as I do not care about the politics.

My reason for posting here is to ask if there are guys/companies around here who can assist me getting something there in the USA. I have a family but we made a decision that I should go first, get a bit settled, and get them here. I want to do this the legal way so I need assistance and advice on how to do this. Some "immegration" company phoned me yesterday from Canada and started asking me about How I am going to pay for his "legal" advice, he mentioned an amount of roughly $1490 (This amounts to about the monthly salary I get paid out after deductions in our currency, there's no way I can afford this anyways...)

I DM'ed a guy who also trends around here, and he gave me some solid advice, but now I need to get something to move forward.

    Thanks for reading.

Should i make a hit and run claim?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 03:00 PM PDT

My friend was involved in a hit and run today. She was stopped at a light, on a phone call with a family member via the car Bluetooth, and the vehicle in front of her started backing up. She started honking then holding the horn, but the car backed right into her. The family member heard the honking and my friends reactions to what was happening, as the other driver drove away. At the next light my friend pulled up next to the driver and asked if she was going to pull over to discuss the collision, and the other driver responded, 'You ran into me' and drove off. I've seen pictures of the other cars license plate, and the damage to my friends car.

I can share the name of my friends insurance company if it is relevant. The deductible is $750, and her grill would need to be replaced on a leased 2018 car. Happened in CA, today. I have her permission to post this.

I am wondering if this is worth making a claim based on damage, deductible, and circumstance.

On mobile, please forgive any typos/ formatting

    A preemptive Thanks!

    Ambulance Bill

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:09 PM PDT

Was in a motor vehicle accident and partner covered by my health insurance required ambulance transport to hospital.
Ambulance company sent bill (>$1,000) and we submitted our health insurance information (which covers transport). They called and asked for our car insurance information instead and stated they don't bill health insurance after car accidents.

Now I'm pretty sure they're wrong about this, but I get the impression they want to bill full freight and have my car insurance medpay coverage pay for it instead of billing the contracted rate through my health insurance, but they refuse to bill the health insurance company even though they are contracted. So what do I do here? Or am I off base?

Can anyone tell me what this means?

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:52 PM PDT

I am having surgery on April 5 (two days from now) and have not gotten any word from my insurance on whether or not it's covered. It's a bilateral salpingectomy. My initial visit with the doctor was 2/26/19 for the consult. My pre-op appointment was 3/26/19. Like I said, my surgery is going to be 4/5/19. I just recently checked my insurance website and found this:

    Authorization details

In case you can't see/click that, I went to the authorization page of my insurance website and it lists provider name (referring-doctor and treating-hospital), authorization received date of 3/25/19, primary DX (encounter for other general counseling & advice on contraception), status (void), decision (voided), cert number (redacted). Then it lists under Services: "On 04/04/2019 - 04/04/2019 there was a Surgical performed. Service Decision - Voided. Requested # - 1. Approved # - 0. Denied # - 0. Procedure code - 58661. Procedure description (left blank).

Does this mean my surgery is being denied? I don't know where they got the date 4/4/19 since my procedure is happening on 4/5/19. Can someone help me understand this? I can't call until tomorrow but they are open from 9AM-6PM and I work from 745AM-6PM. It will be incredibly difficult for me to step away and be able to spend the time on the phone with them in my job.

Accident with no damage, other driving claiming injury [PA]

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 08:05 PM PDT

    Hello, this happened in PA.

My father and another car were backing out of a parking spot and bumped rear bumpers. There was no damage to either car, but the other driver immediately starting claiming injury on site. She was fully mobile and drove the car away (after).

My father did not think to take a picture of her car or call the cops, only took a picture of her license plate and expired auto insurance. Apparently this woman has already filed a claim against his insurance. I've already told him how stupid it was to not take pictures and not call the police, but how screwed might he be in this situation?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Car accident on one day old car

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 10:03 PM PDT

Hi everyone, so my friend got a new car and within hours of her getting it someone hit her (not much damage just a scuff on the back door and deep scratches on the back rim, drivers side), she's not at fault but we're in Florida, which is a no fault state. They filed a police report either way.

The issue is her old insurance with geico ended on the day she got hit, and the insurance she has now (progressive) started the next day. We think we have to call geico but since she is not under them she doesn't think they are able to cover her. And since the new insurance started the next day we don't know if they can help her either.

They (her and the person who hit her) also wanted to settle this w/o insurance being involved but the person that hit her backtracked after saying they would pay to get her car fixed.

She is not sure what to do. Any help is appreciated,Thanks!

    Question about UK Healthcare

    Posted: 04 Apr 2019 12:22 AM PDT

So my wife and I are in The UK for spring break from the The US and she got an ear infection. We went to the hospital A&E and they checked her out and sent her to the UCC. Once we got checked out by the DR/Nurse at the UCC, we got our prescription and just left. Is that really all there is to it? Will they be mailing a bill to us later?

    Short Term Disability Claim Denied

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:09 PM PDT

Hello, I've come for some advice regarding a short term disability claim that was denied. If this is not the correct subreddit for this, please let me know which one is correct.

A little back ground info regarding my claim:

Roughly 10 years ago I was diagnosed with a rare cancer. Fortunately for me, I was able to beat if with intense chemotherapy. Then I relapsed twice but was able to beat it again for a second and third time. Obviously the effects of chemotherapy and immunosuppression have had severe effects on me- chronic kidney disease stage 3, avascular necrosis, cardiomyopathy, and now gastroparesis.

Three years ago I had my first flare up from the gastoparesis. I was sick with it roughly 4 years due to persistent nausea a vomiting. By the time I was able to return to work, I had lost 30 pounds. My short term disability claim was denied. I probably should have appealed but I didn't because I was happy just to have my job still.

2 years after that, I had another flare up with the same symptoms. After a couple months, I return to work only being down 15 pounds this time. The insurance company approved my disability claim this time.

And now, 3 months ago, I had another flare up. Just ridiculous. I had to file another claim due to how miserable and weak I've been from the nausea and vomiting. I've lost about 15 pounds from it this time. My claim was denied again.

It's infuriating that my claim could be denied when I'm going through this. I don't understand how they could when presented with the 3 claims that are all more of less the same issue. Especially when they know my health history and the side effects I've suffered from it. My GI Doctor has referred me to a specialty research clinic to figure out how to treat me. He even explained to my employer and insurance handling the claim, that this was a lifelong illness that I will have to deal with from time to time.

So my question is, what's my next step? I'm so aggravated by the decision with everything they know about my health. Half of me wants to walk into my work, head to HR and tell my HR rep to go f_ _ _ himself and quit on the spot. The other part of me is conflicted. My employer has held my job for me even though my claim has been denied 2/3 times now and I'm very fortunate to have a job. My uncle is a disability lawyer so I am considering take legal action.

I'm not sure what to do. How should I move forward? Do I have a case? Should I take legal action?

    Any input is appreciated. Thanks!!

Thoughts on Automation in the Insurance Industry

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 12:16 PM PDT

Do you think that the insurance industry, specifically the underwriting profession, will become obsolete with the advent of AI? I read the BLS stats for 2016 - 2026 state a job outlook of -5%, but I attribute that to more of baby boomers retiring. I'm sure there are UA roles that will be diminished by automation, but I was curious as to peoples takes.

Brand new car, issues after repairs

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 06:46 PM PDT

Purchased a new Panamera 4s and after 3 months hit massive pothole. Repair estimate was $11k due to suspension needing intensive repair. Car also lost about $6k in value as it was reported as a collision. Now I have received the car back (after 2 months) and the suspension's been squeaking.

The dealer said it's the components settling in and give it a few days. It's been about a week and a half and the noise is now louder and more common than before. How should I approach this and when should I get my insurance company reinvolved? What do I do if they are unable to fix the sound, as this is literally a brand new car that I was planning on keeping a few years

    Sewer backup insurance

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 10:50 AM PDT

I don't have a basement, or a sump pump, does this mean sewer backup insurance isn't necessary? I got a quote to add 25,000 for $100 and 75,000 for $240 a year. Are these worth it, if I don't have a basement?

    Accident and car sold

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:52 PM PDT

Hello, a truck that a friend planned on selling to someone for a few months was involved in an accident and struck from behind, minor damage, but it was still sold and no claim was filed by either side. About 3-4 weeks after the sale, Geico itself is attempting to do a liability claim. Any info on a situation like this, what to do, who to call? Forgot to mention, the accident was a few weeks before the sale, around 3-4, and this is is LV, Nevada.

    I think I'm missing something

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:48 PM PDT

    I'll try to be brief:

    1. I work PRN at a hospital for $26.18/ hour. I get regular hours (usually 36 in the form of 3- 12 hour shifts) plus take call and have approved overtime.

    2. There are 5 full-time positions available. The graveyards get a shift differential of $4 for nights including $3 if it's on a weekend. However, I HATE 3rd shift and don't think I can physically do it for long.

    3. The full-time (pointage) rate is $19.01/ hour. That's $1000 less if I'm working 36 hours PRN. I prefer the 7a-7p weekday shifts but that means no differential.

    4. How does it cost me $12,000 a year to STILL pay for insurance and "benefits" just to go "full-time" when I'm already getting full-time hours?

    5. My pay won't even cover half of our bills if/ when I go to pointage.

    6. Husband and I have a good amount of debt and a 2 month old that still qualifies for Medicaid.

    7. I know I need a job with benefits eventually but how can they really cost the employer that much? On top of insurance, I'm still supposed to fund my retirement. I'm 26. How can we get ahead if I make so much less? Making less means less bills/ debt gets paid and I can't afford to put more money into retirement at only $19/ hour.

I recently got into a car accident, and it was the other drivers fault.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 05:36 PM PDT

The other driver had no license, and the insurance isn't under his name. I reported a claim already, but they said they have to check the coverage policy for the insured. I don't even know what this means. they're still gonna send someone out to do an inspection on my car to make an estimate, but while they wait to see the policy.. A lot of people are telling me they're probably not going to cover this, since it wasn't the person who's name is on the insurance that was driving.. Is this true? What do I do if they decline my claim? The other driver was cooperative and gave me all his info, but this is so frustrating. any help would be great.

I also only had liability (couldn't afford full coverage and the car isn't new). and also, if my insurance has to come in, would it higher my insurance costs?

Will a 0 point traffic offense raise insurance?(NJ)

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 11:12 AM PDT

I was recently stopped for speeding 15 over the speed limit, however the cop that pulled me over said since I'm young and I had a clean record he would drop it to a offense with 0 points. I was cited for Failure to obey signal/Sign which carries a fine of $54 and 0 points. I was just wondering if it would increase my insurance rate(AllState) and if it does how long would it take for that to happen?

Car insurance refusing to pay medical bills from MVA (Oregon)

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 04:16 PM PDT

    Posting for a friend:

"I had a workman's comp covered fall in December 2015 where I fell on my back and saw a doctor. I then got in a car accident about a week later. The car accident caused whiplash and other back pain. I received two good referrals from physicians saying I needed physical therapy for injuries sustained from the MVA. I attended 30 sessions in 2016 that should have been covered by my car insurance. Car insurance opened a year long investigation and first said the injuries I needed therapy for was from the workman's comp fall but then later the car insurances doctor deemed the treatments unnecessary. Now I have a $5700 bill in collections because car insurance refuses to pay therapy costs from the MVA injury. I did not have regular health insurance at the time. They totally jerked me around and are just trying to get out of paying despite two doctors saying I needed the treatments and the issue was caused by the MVA. What can I do? Also is there a statute of limitations since the treatments were all received in 2016?

    Parents dental insurance

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 09:15 AM PDT

I live in America and am on my parents insurance. I have to have several dental operations done (2 root canals and crowns.) The dentist said that this will deplete the dental insurance maximum. Does that mean that if my parents or anyone else in my family needs to use the insurance there won't be any left for them?

Getting married soon and need some help on the insurance side

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 02:08 PM PDT

I'm currently on Medicaid with the rest of my family and she is currently on her parents insurance (isn't Medicaid). I assumed I was going to be able to stay on my parents insurance for a while and she was going to do the same but my parents told me Medicaid doesn't work like other insurances so once I'm married. So right now the only option I really see is making her get off her parents and get on her work insurance and then I get on with her.

I start my job July 15th and I'll be able to get on my work insurance then but I don't know if she'll be able to get back on her parents insurance or how that really works.

I know I could go without insurance until then but I have chronz disease and have to get an infusion every 6 weeks so I would probably have to go about 10 weeks without an infusion and that would really suck.

Our wedding is in June but we are getting our marriage license early May.

So if you have any advice on what to do or anything I should be reading on, that would be great.

Short term disability for HAND and WRIST injuries only.

    Posted: 03 Apr 2019 01:00 PM PDT

My wife is a dental hygienist and wants to get a short term disability policy, but she only wants her hands and wrists to be covered. If she injures hands she is out of work, and she is mildly paranoid about it and won't do any activities that could cause hand or wrist injury (and that's no fun). She already pays over 10,000 a year for health insurance and does not want to add another $100 a month for full short term disability (which is what she would pay for her income level and realistic needs, I got quotes from multiple companies), I'm sure it would be nice to get covered for sickness, but the immediate concern here is injury to a single body part. She only needs around $4000 of coverage to be paid over 45 days or so. We have a decent amount of money saved, but she is still willing to get the coverage so the savings won't be depleted due to an injury. What companies do this and how much does it normally cost? Also, please don't try and convince us to buy a more inclusive plan, she doesn't want it.
